#9-1-1 vs Buffy

This parallel post between Buffy and 9-1-1 got me thinking about the above, especially in light of the fact Tim Minear has written for 9-1-1 and Angel, because I would say both of these shows have similarities in the way they tell their stories, even if the tone of them is quite different.
I think Buffy and Angel were more comfortable in not necessarily giving happy endings the audience wanted for all characters/ships, but the finale of Buffy was basically one giant fix-it fic lol (giving all potentials the power of the slayer and allowing Buffy the freedom to have a life of her own). 9-1-1 still offers a lot of angst, grief, tragedy, whump etc. but generally the vibes are more hopeful than they sometimes were on Buffy and Angel. But my general point is, the style of both shows feels very fan fic in how they deploy tropes, parallels, dreams, flashbacks, ships, etc. in a way a lot of shows don't nowadays.
I'm sure plenty of others have said this before me, but I still cannot get over just how utterly fan fic 9-1-1 as a show is...and I don't mean that in a negative way either! But it unabashedly leans into classic and popular tropes (to the point where I've spotted a truly insane amount of parallels between the tropes/plot beats the show has used for Buddie and the tropes/plot beats I used in the last longfic I wrote for an entirely different ship/fandom...and I hadn't even watched 9-1-1 when I wrote it) and its on-the-nose dialogue and shot framing and unsubtle soundtrack choices that double up as song lyric fic titles (I say all of this affectionately btw ❤️) and this approach flies in the face of the way a lot of TV is written these days.
There is so much focus on the big serious prestige dramas where these types of storytelling techniques are frowned upon and there's almost an air of snobbery around happy endings, redemption arcs, found family and healing. But when it comes to fan fic, these tropes are what a lot of people want to write and read. They want to see their favourite characters overcome their struggles, be given a second chance, go through something terrible but come out the other side, process their grief and trauma, nearly die but survive, fall and stay in requited love, have a sexuality awakening, have a slowburn romance with their best friend etc. 9-1-1 allows these storylines to play out on screen in a way that somehow still feels refreshing in 2024. Because most of the time we're denied the opportunity for catharsis unless we write it ourselves.
I think this is why the genuine possibility of Buddie becoming canon is so exciting, because it'd be the most fan fic thing to ever fan fic lol. And usually, the expectation of such a ship becoming canon is dismissed as silly and delusional, because historically speaking, fandom has had to do all the heavy lifting by telling itself this kind of story when TV studios haven't been prepared to do it. And even when Buffy did it with Willow and Tara, Tara was brutally killed off and her and Willow were denied their happily-ever-after.
When you're used to the almost universal praise of cynicism and grittiness and tragedy in media over anything else, it’s easy to invalidate yourself by thinking that's the way it always has to be in canon and that if you want anything more hopeful, that's what fic is there for. But I think 9-1-1, and Buffy/Angel back in the day to a certain extent (although not where Willow and Tara were concerned, obviously), prove it doesn't have to be like that, and there is also room for fandom's preferred method of storytelling.
I know it was a flawed show and the head writer turned out to be a total asshat, but oh man, I owe so much to Buffy. The storytelling techniques, the tropes, the motifs, the symbolism, the metaphors, the dreams, the objects of significance, the parallels. I know these aren’t remotely unique writing tools, but this show was so formative for me. I didn’t even realise how much I absorbed from it until I started writing fic, but whenever I’ve re-watched it since, I can’t help but notice echoes of it in my writing.

Younger Siblings Tournament Bracket Reveal
A few things I want to mention before I reveal the bracket (and make the post really long because all the matchups will be listed in text):
Seeding of fictional characters in tumblr polls is inherently subjective. I did try to make it so that more popular characters/media would (most likely) face off against each other in later rounds, but I may be overestimating or underestimating the popularity of some characters/media, especially ones I'm not familiar with. There are some round 1 matchups that are probably a closer match but none of them are between the strongest candidates... I think.
The more niche characters will probably get obliterated in the first round as per Squimbus' Law. This is a tumblr poll and I do fully expect more popular characters to sweep, but that doesn't mean you can't encourage your friends to give your niche faves a fighting chance.
Also there are some matchups I literally just thought would be funny. Please don't take this too seriously.
I'm sorry BNHA fans.
(Preliminary Patch Notes 3/14: Swapped brackets 2 and 3, and brackets 19 and 21.)

rating the (canon) buffyverse ships based on how much i like them
angel + buffy (7/10) i think it's okay for what it is, but buffy clearly outgrows him in the end but omg that i will always remember you episode on ats is so tragic and made me appreciate them sm more
spike + buffy (9/10) OMG THE SCENE OF THEM IN SEASON 7 WHERE SPIKE SAYS HE LOVES HER NOT BECAUSE OF WHAT SHE DOES OR BECAUSE HE'S GETTING ANYTHING IN RETURN BUT BECAUSE OF WHO SHE IS AND WHAT SHE IS IS SO. i love them together omg.
riley + buffy (6/10) i don't like hate them? riley had sm potential as a character and as a boyfriend but good lord did they handle him badly. they could've made him a cute golden retriever boyfriend for buffy but instead they made him toxic masculinity TM. season 4 riley is enjoyable though, just once you get to season 5 he becomes annoying and pretty unbearable
willow + oz (8/10) SO CUTE!! i will always be mad that they wrote willow as a complete lesbian, as i know sexuality is fluid but her romance with both oz and tara read more as a bisexual woman rather than a lesbian. i wish oz had stayed on the show longer though as he was amazing, not just as willow's love interest. i love you forever oz
willow + tara (9/10)
i love them so so so so much my fav sapphic lovers. tara is my favorite buffyverse character besides buffy herself and seeing her character growth that came from willow's open support and friendship that blossomed into a romance was one of the greatest romance arcs on television i love them sm. willow's magic addiction is weird though in season 6 and weighs on their relationship a bit but in the end i love them
willow + kennedy (1/10) ew. i don't have to explain myself just ew.
willow + xander (1/10) no. no no no no no.
xander + cordelia (3/10) ew no, i will forever hate xander harris and pairing my girl cordy with him will forever make me mad AND THEN HE CHEATS ON HER???? vile.
xander + anya (6/10) i actually don't hate them sometimes, but it infuriated how often he undermined her when she was one of the most knowledgeable characters in the buffyverse on history with magic and etc. their little arc during once more with feeling made me like them a lot more though
spike + anya (5/10) i don't take it seriously as a ship but it was so funny when it did happen and i love it for that
cordelia + angel (8/10) SUCH A BETTER PAIRING FOR THESE CHARACTERS THEY SHOULD'VE BEEN THE ENDGAME!
giles + jenny (9/10) SO CUTE. THE TRAGEDY OMG I SOBBED SO HARD WHEN JENNY DIED I MISS YOU SM. the pining, the difference in technology vs physical information, etc. their dynamic was adorable and i'll always miss her sm
buffy + robin (4/10) very short lived and fizzled out so fast that it barely counts, i like robin alot though and wish he was given more to do as i found him interesting
drusilla + spike (7/10) i kinda love their devotion to each other even if it was extremely unhealthy, aesthetically also a very sexy ship and i love them for that
angel + darla (8/10) darla is one of the most underrated buffyverse characters and her arc in ats made her so so so fascinating that i am partially giving it such a high score because of my fascination with darla
fred + gunn (9/10) so cute!! i love them so much and it was so wholesome
fred + wesley (6/10) good amount of pining i guess? i don't have much to say about it but it was enjoyable enough
doyle + cordelia (7/10) so cute also!! i wish doyle had stayed around longer as i loved him lots
wesley + cordelia (3/10) ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew. SHE WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL DUDE IDC SO GROSS
wesley + lilah (7/10) in terms of functionality, not the best, BUT in terms of my fascination, very very high up omg
harmony + spike (4/10) also kinda a crack ship but it was funny while it lasted, harm deserved better though
(i think i covered them all but if there's more i'll update this)

After a brutal preliminary round, we have reached the tournament proper. Round 1 will consist of 64 matchups, with 1 through 32 in Week 1 and 33 through 64 in Week 2, and those groups will continue to alternate through the rounds until we reach the Finals, which will consist of both the final matchup for first place and a matchup between the two losers of the semifinals for third place.
This tournament has concluded, and the winners can be found here.
Links to a google sheet with the original submissions and a google doc with all propaganda for all submissions with content warnings can be found here.
If you have any trigger warnings you want me to include (you can check against what is already being tagged here), please submit them here.
And if you want to create a prediction for the whole tournament, you can create and submit it here because why not, right? Let's see who gets it right! Go here, scroll down, and click the green button saying "Create a Prediction"!
NOTE: You can use a phony email address when they ask for one.

20 question for writers tag game
tagged by @alexandia03
1. Total number of ao3 works?
54
2. Total ao3 word count
233,997.
3. Fandoms I've written in
On the AO3: Empyrean, Repo! the Genetic Opera, Xiaolin Showdown, and a bunch of one-offs for Yuletide or other collection/prompt fics.
Pre-AO3, I've written FFVII, FFVIII, Hellsing (how I met my spouse), GI Joe, Babylon 5. Buffy/Angel. X-Men, X-Files. Probably others I'm not thinking about, I've been writing fanfic since before I knew that other people did it and by that I'm talking 1988.
4. Top 5 fics by kudos
Scott Pilgrim vs. the Unspoken History - Based on the 2010 film, Scott Pilgrim/Wallace Wells. Written for @copperfirebird
At Lunchtime, in the Wilderness - Calvin & Hobbes + Where the Wild Things Are, Gen. Also written for @copperfirebird.
Time and Time Again and Again and Again and Again - Xiaolin Showdown, Chase Young/Jack Spicer. Written *with* @copperfirebird, just for variety.
A Kiss is a Terrible Thing to Waste - Repo! the Genetic Opera, Graverobber/Nathan Wallace. Written for a request meme.
Sketchbook - The Empyrean, Violet & Brennan, Naolin/Brennan. The most recent of my top five by a LOT, this was my first posted Empyrean fic.
5. Do I respond to comments?
Not unless they ask a question or something similar. I'm not good at writing comments.
6. What has the angstiest ending?
I'm not sure if this is "of the top five" or "of the 54 pieces I've posted on the AO3," but I'm going to go with the latter because the former has angst but not really in the ending. So.
Angstiest ending is Dear Alex, a Yuletide fic I wrote for @copperfirebird. A Wrinkle in Time is one of his very favorite books, and this is Kate and Alex Murray figuring out how to be a married couple again. It made me cry, writing it.
7. What has the happiest ending?
It might be New Year's Welcome, which is FFVIII Seifer/Squall/Rinoa and is about finding a home and a place when you thought you'd lost everything.
8. Have I received hate?
Nope. Possibly because I've mostly stayed in very small fandoms.
9. Do I write smut? And what kind?
Yes, I do. If I had to describe it, I would call it lyrical smut, where it's about the flow of the words and the feeling more than the specifics.
10. Do I write crossovers?
One of my top 5s is a crossover, in fact, but it's not something I do very often.
11. Have I ever had a fic stolen?
Yeah, back in the ff.net days, and it was a very weird feeling.
12. Have I ever had a fic translated?
No.
13. Have I ever co-written a fic?
Many. @copperfirebird and I are partners in life and fiction.
14. What is my all-time fave ship?
I can tell you who my favorite child is (I only have one) but I could not possibly pick my favorite ship. I would have a hard time picking a favorite ship in any given fandom.
I love relationships between people whose feelings are bigger than their abilities to communicate it, but who find understanding in the silences; people who are drawn together despite all the reasons that they should not be; and people who are deeply loyal to one another.
15. A WIP I'll never finish
The Future Waits Without Us was supposed to be a large multi-part story that I wrote two pieces of.
Probably Came Too Far To Die because I have one mostly-written chapter I haven't published yet and then I have no idea what I'm doing. I have never known what I was doing with this fic, but I didn't let it stop me.
16. Writing strengths?
Lyrical prose. Three-part clauses. Emotionally complex characters. Witty banter.
17. Writing weaknesses?
Plot. Too bad that's, like, an extremely important part of story building.
18. Do I like foreign language dialogue?
This is a weird question. I don't have any problems with other people writing in multiple languages. There are bilingual characters who should use multiple languages. I'm more prone to things like, "This sentence is written in the common tongue," he said in Tyrrish.
19. First fandom I wrote for?
Dragonriders of Pern when I was in 7th grade.
20. Favourite fic I've written?
It's hard to pick one, but there are two fics that I'm always breathlessly startled I was able to write. Both of them were Yuletide requests, and I know Yuletide's coming around again when I start getting kudos for these.
The first one is In Two Bodies, Alexander and Hephaestian, inspired by Mary Renault's Alexander Trilogy. If you were wondering what I meant by "lyrical smut," this one's an excellent example.
The second one is Finding Zihuatanejo, inspired by the beautiful Stephen King short story "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption." It really feels like I got the narrator's voice down perfectly.

20 Questions for Writers!
I was tagged by @marvel-ous-m thank you so much my dear ily <3 <3 <3
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
I currently have 32 works...Yowza!
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
Hahahaha ok ok ok I'm scared to look but I will. I have 696,369 words on Ao3. That is...so many. And there are way more unpublished!
3. What fandoms do you write for?
So far, I have only written for Stranger Things, other than my one teaser chapter for a Buffy x Stranger Things crossover I really do hope to return to one day.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
songs that voices never share (aka deaf!Steve part 1)
Stranger Therapy (which has recently made a resurgance - and a sort of part 2 is on the way!)
i wanna cut to the feeling
i can't tune you out
Freaky Friday (Steddie's Version) - honestly this one is still my baby
5. Do you respond to comments?
Always always always!! Even if people just write a heart or something, I write back. When I get a notification that someone commented, it literally makes my day and I re-read them often as a pick-me-up.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Honestly I don't write angsty endings!! I much prefer the happy ones. Closest I've got to angsty I guess is I'm counting the days to the rapture, depending on whose ending you focus on lol
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Oh GOSH. Almost all of them end on a sugary sweet note, but I'll link flowers and ink because that whole thing is just fluff fluff fluffy fluff
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not really? And I'm super grateful for that because on the few times I've gotten semi rude feedback, it has totally plagued my brain hahaha. I'm thankful that so far nothing too bad. (Please nobody change that!)
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I mean, I have, but I don't have anything 18+ on this account very intentionally.
10. Do you write crossovers?
I would, but I haven't really gotten it to stick! One chapter of my Buffy crossover is out, and I have a TLOU crossover idea in my drafts, and there's of course my nearly completed WIP Eddie Munson vs the World, but that's more of an inspired by and less of a crossover. By the way, everyone read that one because it's the most ridiculous thing I've ever written.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I sure hope not! But it's possible, I suppose.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No, but AHHH that would be very cool.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes!! I co-wrote a Carrie AU with another fandom friend where Eddie was Carrie and Steve/Chrissy care for him and save him after the prom fiasco. It's on my friend's account, because it's got violence and other explicit content, but it really launched me into taking more risks in my writing!
I also started collabing with my bestie @steviesbicrisis on another fic, but then both of us got super busy. Sorry about that!
Me and @withacapitalp also came up with a banger idea for a collab last night so...we shall see!
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
Oh gosh, all time???? Oh, man. Steddie makes me feral to write, obviously, but to shake things up I'll add Spuffy and Literati (Rory and Jess from Gilmore Girls) into the mix.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?
This is so tough because I have thing this where, if I publish a chapter, I HAVE to finish it. But!! There are many things in my WIP folder I don't think I will ever get to, including my Buffy crossover and the one where Dustin and Erica has a time-traveling daughter.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Just like my friend who tagged me, i think characterization and dialogue are my strong suits. It's what I get positive feedback on the most. I also think I'm funny though! At least, in the fics that are more silly lol.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Probablyyyy ummm descriptions? Yeah, that. I've gotten A LOT better about it, but I usually end up writing a lot of dialogue with minimal action because it's easier for me lol
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Okay, so I've done it, and it's TOUGH. It was for deaf Steve (tagged above, it's my most popular fic). ASL was especially challenging because it can't really be written down, so I had to get creative.
In one fic, any time a character spoke Russian, I just italicized it and made a note at the beginning that mean it wasn't in English canonically. I am not fluent in Russian, so I didn't want to risk relying on Google Translate! Plus, I'd have to write the English part anyway for readers.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
I think. Technically. It was...ha ha, nope. I don't even wanna say it.
20. Favorite fic you've written?
This is so hard, they are all my babies and I put so much care into them! I'm gonna give a shoutout to Back to the Future (Hawkins Edition), as I always do. Now that it's been done over a year I can see the flaws in it and what I would have done different, but the amount of planning and thought and research I put in that thing deserves recognition lol. I think my current long project, we can be heroes (aka part 2 of deaf steve!), could take over as the biggest undertaking, though. But so far it's probably about equal lol.
The besties I have tagged above are welcome to do this. I also wanna nominate @tartarusknight and @imfinereallyybut no pressure!
