Fandoms and Thoughts on Defamation

I'm pretty sure we are all in some kind of fandom at some point of our life. But first, the definition. Fandom is a term of "the state of being a fan of someone or something, especially a very enthusiastic one" (Cambridge Dictionary, 2022).

I won't say that I am a hardcore fan for anything but I am a fan of gaming, and music, and a fan and for some non existence fictional characters.

I like playing quite a few games but the best for me would be Valorant (although that game tilted me almost everytime and I just lost 2 games before writing this). The Valorant community can be considered big since it is one of the mainstream games currently. This game has made me fans of some streamers on Twitch (I love Kyedae and TenZ, they're so cuteee) and also professional competitive Valorant teams (Paper Rex!!!).

Apparently, my Spotify 2022 Wrapped shows that BLACKPINK is the most listened artist for me this year with 6353 minutes. Hmmm... Well, it's true. I'm a a proud BLINK! I LOVEE "How You Like That", "Shut Down" and "Pink Venom". Their songs just makes me high.

One of the many fictional characters (because why fan for one when you can fan for more characters HAHA) that I am in love with (not literally) is Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman (he's just too cool 😭). I do not want to continue babbling about this so let's just move on to the next part.

There's always something that we like and also dislike. Some of us like to keep it to ourselves, some of us like to voice them out. Same thing goes to fans and some fans may take things to the next level on social media, to defame the opponents or vice versa, and it is scary, particularly in the K-Pop industry. Defending is a different thing but defaming is real bad.

I've come across YouTube shorts that has an opening or caption, that I personally think that is trying to bring down a group or idol's reputation, such as "Kpop Idols THAT ARE "CRINGE"" or "these are the worst kpop songs of 2022" and these titles are often misleading because sometimes the content has nothing to do with the title. Another example is sexual assaults claims on the Internet. Yes, I know, some of them are true, but there are also a number of innocent people that are accused of doing so. For example, in 2017, a member of NU'EST W was accused of sexually a person in the community back in 2009 by exposing him in an online community but was later then proven innocent through investigation (Lim, 2018). If accusing someone for something that was not done, was it done for attention? Maybe? We never know.

Conclusion, we all have our own likes and dislikes, but if you dislike something, maybe keeping it to yourself would be better in this case. We all are part of different fandoms, let's respect all fandoms and make the world a better place for any fans regardless of their fandoms ♡

on the topic of produce groups and popularity while i do think the built in fanbase any contestant has on a produce show gets is a bonus there are some anomalies in popularity that dont always guarantee produce contestant alumni success. ive and lssfm have the most popular members in izone. meanwhile everglow is popular overseas (not sure about korea they dont have many wins) with midranking/lowranking produce 48 members. but cube has a group thats about half produce 48 members mid/high ranking that barely get promo? these arent the most solid examples because a contestant doesnt have the same amount of popularity as someone in a produce group *but* weki meki has 2 produce members in their group from i.o.i (who were very popular)and they dont have much popularity to show for it. so its a balance between company and member popularity. if a good company has less popular contestants or members they can make it work.(i.e. everglow) if a bad company has a popular member its not always a surefire success. (chungha basically put her company on the map meanwhile fromis 9 had a FLOP company until hybe finally swooped in) starship and hybe hit the jackpot. popular members AND good promo.

i mean yea, it absolutely does depend on how the company handles it and how popular each individual member is. saying everyone gets the same popularity boost from being on a produce show is a bit too much of a blanket statement bc honestly it's about half and half if the popularity actually does something significant or not. like even for wanna one; you have kang daniel who's more or less a household name, and also yoon jisung, who does musicals and cute flop citypop tracks and makes songs with his dog. and there's also how the show saved nu'est from the brink, even when minhyun didn't promote with them for two years. even at the less opposite ends of the spectrum, ab6ix might as well be called daehwi and the woojins, but baejin barely stands out from the rest of cix anymore, even though they are similar groups with similar-ish popularity. and of course that's not even bringing up the mess that was x1 and how all the offshoot groups from that are doing.

My Favorite Comebacks of 2021

This was... so difficult. Switched a few so many times. I'm honestly really bad at picking favorites. My favorites tend to just be whatever I'm into at the moment. But! These are all songs I've consistently been listening to since they came out and I love them all so much. They are... slightly in order? First 5 definitely are.

Burn It has DEFINITELY been my favorite comeback this year. I still can't get over watching that music video for the first time.. oh how I wish I could watch it for the first time over again. I'm not usually into 'summer songs' but WOW Popping is just.. so good. I listen to it ALL the time. I'm in a bad mood? Popping! Having a great day? Popping! Popping is always the answer!!! Really glad Oneus had Luna. Black Mirror was alright but not really my thing (although Connect with US from that album... SO good). No Diggity took a while to grow on me, but Luna.. LUNA. Amazing.

Random story time: Several of these are my first comebacks with the groups! Beautiful Beautiful was my first comeback of ONF (which I watched when it came out), although as a Fuse it would be Ugly Dance. Similar thing happened with Golden Child - Pump It Up was the first comeback I was there for but properly, it was Burn It. Thunderous was my first Stray Kids comeback (shout out to Kingdom. They were the only group I didn't know going into Kingdom - loved all the other groups; left Kingdom loving skz more than the others lol). I guess I kind of still haven't had my first comeback with CIX as a FIX... I had LOVED Jungle when it came out last year (literally one of my favorite comebacks last year), but never got into them. Watched Cinema when it came out.. loved it but still didn't get into them. Watched Wave when it came out and WOW I adored it and had to get into them. Been into Sunggyu, Oneus, and Seventeen for quite a while now, so definitely not my first comebacks.

Anyway... I'll stop now (although I'm not convinced anyone read all that lol).

bh used to always be so excited about releasing new songs and wanting to spoil them, so this is just so disheartening. the members not saying or posting anything speaks volumes about it too. we cant even enjoy the last few days with them and say goodbye..

yes exactly the only thing pd101 did for them was give the group the exposure to show themselves. and that producer who went to jail because of the rigging who revealed that bh had an anxiety attack on the street?? and then try and say he WANTED to be rigged out after they revealed he was supposed to be in w1? and gosh dont get me started on those solo fans, the hate all the members got was absolutely ridiculous. the boys can barely have any peace.

i have no clue why, even if pledis sucks id much rather their name be under them.

ahh yea idk why they were always left out of things, nuest was the only group who didnt get a seasons greetings after the merger and they were the only one who didnt get added to the company's rhythm game as well. like why are they always getting ignored??

since i'm replying late, everything has been released now...i'm too scared to watch the mv and listen to the song, i saw a snippet of the lyrics through the reddit comments while browsing and i already tears up ;____; will try to work up the courage to do watch it later tonight or tomorrow i just really can't believe it's the last, it's coming to an end..

also mini rant/ i was planning on getting this album, just because i've never bought a nu'est album before and this is the final one i feel like i should get it but with how everything went down, with how clearly rushed it looks, how little effort was given to them not just for this "goodbye" album but for basically their entire existence together....the album would be such a bitter buy like just having it and looking at it's white cover ugh...i might still get it anyways but i don't know!!! i'm so on the fence!! it's like buy it to support the boys like, yes we're here LOVEs are still here going strong even if it's the end we love you always, but buying it doesn't change anything....getting good numbers for this album won't magically un-disband them....pledis and **** will still not care AND they get a cut of the sales anyways

p101 really saved them but it's like should i even be thankful to that cursed show, everything else about it was terrible, the rigging, the editing, the drama, i'm grateful they got the best thing they could out of it which was positive exposure and a loving fanbase but god the journey relating to that show is a mess, the solo stans were absolute hell like please just have a normal bias like everyone else smh always doing the most with all of the hate towards the other members

Do you know the cravity? They debuted last year. Do you think they can become great and conquer the public?

Any decent group has this potential. However, there are so many factors, that even a pro can’t know for sure.

Take LOONA, EXID, NU'EST. The first one needed a change of owner. The second one luck. The third one a miracle. 

I haven’t been observing k-pop for long enough to know the trends and what works in k-pop, but I will list what I can see.

 A group needs:

1) Talented artists. Dancing, vocals, variety skills, looks, charisma. A lot of fans are won over on programmes or thanks to a pretty face. Often the music is secondary to the idols themselves. 

- What I can see in MVs, they have more stage presence than Enhypen. The problem of many rookie groups is that members can dance, but they have this dead look in their eyes or no captivating facial expression. I suppose it’s the result of Korean school and “listen to adults/parents, behave like everyone else” more than the stage fright. Think Taeyong and how most start stan NCT with “who is that red-headed/gucchi guy?”.

2) Producers with money who know what they are doing. Starship is a a well-known company, home to Monsta X, WSJN, Sistar. All middle-tier success. And it looks to me there is an upturn as well? Monsta X is doing pretty good lately.

Cravity is an expensive project, I know the build up was long. There is a concept and a universe. So it’s thought out. 

3) Good music in trend.

- Cravity debuted with 8 songs, the first album is solid. I can’t judge is their vocals are good or recorded well, but they sound OK.

4) Good exposure.

- 4 out of 9 members participated in Produce X 101, two debuted in “X”. Yes, "X” was quickly disbanded due to a huge scandal, however, the programme still made the public know and care about the idols. Victon’s new album sold triple thanks to the programme (and only one member was in X). Look, two last albums were released during the programme and soon after the return of “X” member to his original group.

Cravity has already won several Rookie awards. Sold their first album well, entered Billboard. The start is good, the task is to maintain the momentum.

With the global market it is easier to have success because there are more people and there is no dependence on knets’ whim. Evenso, there can be a scandal, the producers can change, a new super-rookie group appear, etc. Time will tell?

It was actually really hard to narrow it down to 100 but I think I'm happy with it now.
