Ā Shingeki no Kyojin 139 (Theories)
Since everyone is throwing around their theories from the wild to the more likely, I thought I should contribute. After all, it will be the last time we can theorise this amazing manga full of all its twists and turns. Like most, I do agree with the popular fan theories simply because this manga is consistently unpredictable with each chapter. Letās face it, some stories are easily picked apart these days and finding one that continuously has you thinking about what could occur is a winning tale. So first, I will start off by saying that I am so sad that Shingeki no Kyojin is coming to an end. But! I will never forget this amazing manga as I have grown so attached to the characters and the story as you can tell from the past nearly 9 years of running this blog. So, thank you yams for being such a genius! Regardless of the ending, it will go down in history as one of the best stories I personally have ever read and witnessed.
With typical fan theories, I wonāt go into them too much as I feel the concept of the ātime loopā has been written about to filth and I think it is very blatantly clear at this point that the concept of a time loop is very likely in one way or another given the overall concept within aot/snk in general - there is a obvious manipulation of past, present and future. I will hold my hands up and say that I definitely do agree with āsomeā popular fan theories and will list a fair few below in brief detail - as I do think they are highly likely to be true in some way or at least implied within the last chapter. Now, with the usual leak dates coming up on the horizon, I wanted to put my input in before hand. Although, because of recent prosecution warnings for leaking the final chapter - I would advise others just to wait for the 9th of April on official release for concrete facts rather than speculations and leaks simply because we have seen with past few chapters that a lot of false spoilers get released and I think with the final chapter it would be wise to wait as I have previously stated on here that it will be the ārevelationā chapter that ties this manga together.
So! With the typical fan theories, we see the likes of:
Eren being the baby daddy to Historiaās baby
Eren sacrificing his reason for living - freedom. By being the greater evil to bring about the greater good
The baby itself could become the new beast titan or baby Eren/Ymir reborn
Eren isnāt dead, but on Paradis by way of transferring his subconscious into a crystallised version of himself
Eren and Ymir have struck a deal
And of course - the time loop concept
ā¦The list is endless of popular fan theories. It would be silly not to agree with any of them given the story and where we are currently at, its very clear that Historia, Eren and Ymir will play a big part somehow in the final chapter (if not id be genuinely shocked) since majority of the past few chapters they have been absent in full form and I feel this needs to be explained. After all we still havenāt seen the full extent of the memories of past/future that Eren was aware of from his contact with Historia and his connection with Ymir in Paths. We saw 137 being predominantly Armin based, 138 being Mikasa based and I think it is only reasonable given his absence as the initial protagonist that Eren will be the revelation within 139. Ultimately culminating EMA / the trio as a whole. We began with them, so it only makes sense to end with them (albeit separately as individuals).
Moving on, as you can see I agree with said fan theories as I think any route could be possible! The thing with Shingeki no Kyojin is that it has many hidden āEaster eggsā (how fitting given its easter), whether it be in the background of scenes, characters wording, placement of scenes/characters, flashbacks, paths and even in the opening and ending credits of the anime we see hidden meanings through imagery. It has all been laid out very well for our finding, its just if we have an intuitive enough imagination to pick it apart and figure things out. This leads on to my own theory/theories (it can go any way and I wont sugarcoat it - I could be reaching)
I generally have 2 theories that run about in my head with how the story itself could turn out or how it works. Both theories kind of tie together in one way or another featuring predominantly Eren and then Mikasa or overall āAckermanā blood/gene concept and its potential involvement in control of said time loop. I will do my best to include manga panels to give visual insight to the points.
To begin, I want to touch on Mikasa's ādreamā in 138 - although devastating, I think it is being taken as the opposite of what it was and personally I see many looking at it through rose tinted glasses. This wasnāt an alternative universe (in my opinion), this was Mikasaās Ideal life - her dream. When it comes to Eren as a connection to Mikasa, he is her reason for being, even in death she chooses not to part with him for her own good and creates a dreamlike reality for herself to make herself go through with the deed. She as a character has dominantly surrounded her existence on Eren, he is categorised many times within the manga as āhomeā - like other fan theories have stated, it has been mentioned many times Mikasa referencing the word āhomeā and also how she wants to ābe close to himā because it gives her comfort and strength. The Ackermans as a whole have attachments to people and this is where they ultimately gain strength from. Without any of the Ackermans āattachmentsā being in danger or being killed, their powers wouldnāt be awakened and without them I feel their strength almost weakens until they find a new reason for living to keep moving forward. Iāll touch more on the āAckermanā theory later as its one of the open loopholes still currently alive within the manga.
Mikasa has always been a character that confuses me, particularly with the way she acts and things she says or thinks. She has said many things that donāt make sense unless she has a certain belief system or knows of things from past lives.
Examples:
As you can see and I will produce more evidence of such comments further in. She implies that she either believes in reincarnation or she is aware of different periods within the said time loop. She speaks of starting over, being dead and returning and implies in different ways that she is scared of the same thing happening again. The last panel - what plan is she on about here? Her own plan. In my opinion it is - "Don't let Eren die". As we have seen, that may be what has to happen. It's fate. She interferes with this and never lets him go.
Mikasa does have an unhealthy bond with Eren, I do think he loves her ( Iām not dismissing that ) but do I think its the type of intense love she feels? no. Some things she has came out with has even shocked other characters and countless times her comrades have tried to ābreak the barrierā to get her to realise her way of thinking when it comes to Eren is unhealthy. Hence why I think we seen Jean in this particular scene below so frustrated
not because he himself has feelings for her, but because sheās not letting them get through to her that she is refusing to believe Eren could ultimately be a changed person (which he definitely is, Iāll not go into my rant of why he isnāt āevil or a āmonsterā because iāve done so already) but overall, Mikasa constantly makes excuses for Eren and doesnāt recognise it, her life revolves around being close to Eren and she gets very emotionally troubled at the idea of not being with him or him ultimately taking a path that doesnāt involve her. We even seen Annie question her and this wasn't many chapters ago and she replies with the same mindset of bringing back "the old Eren". He is not the person he once was particularly as a child. Something that is implied at beginning of manga, it opens with them as children and somehow links with 138.
As stated by Armin below we see him even explaining to Mikasa that Erenās never close, he always takes his own route and that ultimately both Armin and Mikasa arenāt his reason for living. Letās face it - Freedom is Erenās reason for being, his only desire. Armin has also expressed disbelief and almost frustration at her way of thinking when it comes to him (below examples) I think in a way the famed ātable sceneā was Eren trying to break the bond, but heās not doing that for no reason, its implied he does it to protect them, but it could also be because of what he has seen in memories past and future - he has perhaps became aware of Mikasaās involvement within paths and the loop. He has to try to alter her way of thinking to protect her, but maybe also himself.
Armin + Other comrades reactions to Mikasaās mindsetĀ
Another visual point to make regarding Mikasaās ties with previous loops and Armin, was her comment made about him at a very early stage in the manga just after Eren had been eaten by a titan after saving Armin - leaving his fate at this point unknown.Ā
this is implying that Mikasa has some knowledge of previous times Armin has helped them with hisĀ āabilityā which if we are referencing him as a character is his methodical intelligence. But, even here he is confused by the comment, simply because at this point there has been no signs of Arminās usage of this ability - mainly fear and lack of confidence with that in comparison of his peers. We donāt necessarily see this until perhaps even a chapter later and as far as we are aware, Mikasa doesn't follow through withĀ āiāll tell you about it laterā.
I donāt know about anyone else, but it seems odd she has such an attachment to Eren like this that is so intense. Itās not normal to be as intense as she is about someone unless she is used to losing that person over and over. Even as children Mikasa acted possessive over the āconceptā of Eren dying - it wasnāt allowed to happen. She doesnāt have this intense reaction with Armin or other comrades. She fixates on the idea of Eren being her saviour, the one to give her a āhomeā and a āpurposeā. Mikasa consistently opposes his death and his death alone, I can only see this from a standpoint that deep within her own memory she has experienced his death countless times before. She even uses force a couple of times to increase this intensity. Here are some examples of this even in childhood -
There are many more examples of this throughout the manga and her refusal to accept that what she doesnāt want, may just happen. Now this might just be my over active imagination or my own ability of media studies kicking in. But, previously I had been under the impression in the presence of a time loop that Eren was in charge of it and controlling it, that somehow it would constantly reoccur when he himself died and he would have to come up with a way to either prevent his death or ultimately stop the timeline of the titans. Whether that be under making a deal with Ymir herself or by essentiallyĀ ābreaking the wheelā and turning others against him to show Eldians as triumphant heroes.
However, the more iāve thought about it and given the revelations of 138 - i would be more inclined to say it is Mikasa Ackerman herself due to either her specifically or her Ackerman gene. There is something about the bloodline that is missing and we have not had the fabled Ackertalk or much explanation of how they work (something Iād like to see covered in 139 - although i feel it will be an Eren chapter, I also think it will include the visions Eren has seen to give an explanation of why the previous 138 chapters played out the way they did)
I think there is a possibility Eren had to break the wheel on the loop,Ā Mikasa would go back each time and always Eren would die, something weāve established she tries to prevent and never accepts. The only escape was her accepting his death therefore he did everything he could to push her away, break the bond and push her to kill him to end the cycle (since heās seen the future). As I have a hunch previously in other loops he was not killed by her hand - it had to be her to break the cycle or vice versa (but we will get to this).
there is hints of this in theĀ āLost Girlsā OVA. Yes, I am aware itās said that OVAS are not necessarily canon per say, but I donāt think it would have so many open links if Isayama himself didn't want it to. This particular one gives many hints to Mikasaās involvement in the loop and alternative universe theories. The anime adaptations are on point with showing us details we only recognise after more plot points are revealed. It may explain the headaches, every time Eren dies, she reverses the loop or changes realities. This ailment could be a product of her memory issues. In the OVA we see Mikasa in real time thinking about Eren and his constant state of taking his own path.
After this moment, the saidĀ āSceneļæ½ļæ½ļæ½ she speaks of is revealed to us. Another example of Mikasaās dreamlike state or perhaps another timeline? We are taken back to the time where she had given up, had ran out of gas, a titan was approaching and she wasĀ ālostā - her reason for being was gone and she knew her death was coming, but also in the manga during this scene she isĀ āworriedā sheāll have to start again (above in examples). This again implies she knows something we donāt. We then hear Mikasaās voice speaking to Mikasa herself, telling her that if she simply didnāt like this reality she could choose the place she wanted, but as we have seen before - she canāt stop his death.
The peculiar scene in this OVA that got me intrigued by this theory is the masked figure and young mikasa scene. Mikasa is rushing to meet with Eren and Armin to escape the walls in a hot air balloon, but she has to be there by a certain time or the plan fails. As she is running she is stopped by a mysterious masked figure who asks her to join in on his hypnotism trick to spectators. Comments he makes involve him telling her that herĀ āfriendā will ultimately leave her and that she couldnāt accept his death and created this universe. Also, that he is no one, but someone at the same time. I think this holds great significance since the strange thing about this is that his voice mirages into a distant adult Mikasa.
implying that she has toĀ ākillā a part of herself or she has to die to prevent and hault the loop. She has to return from her idealistic dreams of keeping him alive as it will only fail otherwise. Upon hearing of Erenās yet again untimely death within this universe, she begins to have memory flashes of multiple scenes appearing within her eyes with a typical media ārewindā sound as she wakes up back in the street with no gas and a titan approaching but... she says something I find interesting and links to what Eren says at the beginning of the mangaĀ
āthe feeling Iāve had a really long dreamā
We witness Mikasa have theseĀ āheadachesā multiple times within the manga and in the anime they are heavily focused on whenever it happens, which we can only recognise that this is an important part of the story itself. Eren too has random headaches, just not as much as Mikasa, he mainly experiences them when he accesses new memories. However, what if Mikasa too is affected by memories she cannot tap into or it is paths/ackerman gene warning her she is repeating past mistakes?
Notice how there is a lot of emphasis on the wordĀ āagainā when it comes to her headaches or the thought of losing Eren. It is constantly repeated. I think it is highly likely she only remembers some parts from previous loops, but the one that sticks is simply - she has to save Eren each time, but fails. Everything begins again after his or herās demise. Perhaps each time Eren is the one who dies first, creating a somewhat butterfly effect. That maybe Mikasa has died once like she implies in previous example. However, the one to die first (in this case primarily Eren) loses all memories of the past loops - again this is implied as Eren does tell Mikasa he cannot remember his dream. I think deep within his mind Mikasa does remember, but given the fact she has potentially reversed the outcome many times...her memory is simply warped - that or she died in the previous loop and lost those components.Ā
Will she not remember due to her memories being altered in her death?
Either way something needs to change. Eren Kruger says this in Erenās attack titan memories. They are doing something wrong.
I believe Eren in 138 within Mikasaās dream, was trying to tell her to move on, not necessarily forget him, but at least accept his passing - to stop the loop reoccurring, he influenced part of her reality...maybe with the help of Ymir. In a way it could be implied Eren almost regrets wrapping the scarf around her (this is heavily emphasised as a symbol of their relationship), for me the scarf seems like a softer symbolism for a chain - a binding if you will. By wrapping it round Mikasa he binds her to him. He has always insisted she should throw it away, even in 138 within her own conjured reality he says the same. She needs to kill this part of herself orĀ āthe same historyā will be repeated. I do have a HUGE feeling in my heart, head and gut that Mikasa may need to end up dead first as I do have another HUGE feeling that Eren is not dead (maybe its wishful thinking, but his death doesnāt make sense right now, so Yams I trust in you for explanation). His death seemed too convenient.
Now, before I go ontoĀ āAckermanā gene factors, Iāll briefly bring in another peculiarity I have always had about a particular scene in the beginning of the manga. After it is decided Eren will carry the boulder to plug the wall, Eren (the attack titan) seemingly loses control and succumbs to pure rage, in turn he attacks Mikasa. Something he hasnāt done against humans unless its free will.
However, a part of me has always felt that this could be the attack titan itself (in past inhabitants and memories) recognising her as a threat and trying to rid her of the world first to avoid the loop of Eren dying first to Mikasa controlling the loop to return to try to save Eren - nothing changes. This is what I meant byĀ ābreaking the wheelā, we have saw it in other tales, things canāt change unless you choose a different path than the same one with the same brutal cycle. As Kruger says, to save Mikasa and Armin, Eren has to change things - this could be to separate not only Armin, but Mikasa from him, that maybe in previous loops...they follow him. In this instance, he has definitely separated Armin and by way of second hand - Mikasa too. Hence why Ymir says goodbye to Eren in 138, he is free. Another notable concept is that aot/snk is made up of trios, we see it in:
Eren / Mikasa / Armin
Reiner / Bertholdt / Annie
Connie / Jean / Sasha
Hanji / Erwin / Levi
Levi / Farlan / IsabelĀ
Kenny / Levi / Mikasa
It would partially make sense for the trio to be the reasoning for the ending. Almost illuminati based - very yams style.Ā
Why not Mikasa?
Lets talk Ackerman and a slightly different theory, but with relation!Ā
(Obviously, I cannot provide much evidence to support any Ackerman based theories other than what has already been provided, which isnāt a lot to be fair. Dammit Yams)
I want to briefly start off on the Ackerman front with a brief comparison of our two currently known Ackermans: Levi and Mikasa. The main categorising difference between these two is that Levi moves on regardless of what happens to him or his comrades or hisĀ āattachmentsā. He also does not appear to experience these headaches, some say he does, but I canāt find evidence. Isayama shows these headaches with a throbbing sign around Mikasaās head - so unless the Ackertalk happens and Levi confirms it, its still absent in theory. Levi treats Ackerman-ism as moving on, making choices with no regrets (as his backstory indicates) and even in current states he has said he doesnāt regret his decisions. It is why he is able to move forward and keep surviving. Its simple...his mindset is stronger than Mikasa's, she is the weaker link. This could be due to age difference and overall past experience, Levi has more life experience as an Ackerman to have mastered his emotion and reactions to outcomes - he accepts the bad.Ā
Mikasa is weaker in this regard, perhaps if you link it back to the theory of her control of the loop...due to this weakness she creates the loop since she canāt accept his death and tries to return to make amends. I think in reality, Eren knows due to the attack titan ability - he will die. Hence why he appeared so shocked upon making contact with Historia to then very depressed and detached before vanishing in Marley. He became aware of the outcome and I donāt know about anyone else, but Iād be depressed too after finding out my life was made to end especially since all he wanted as a character was Freedom. Eren x Freedom will be the only canon ship at this rate.
However, I do think the only way she can create said loop is through her Ackerman gene. Ackermans are products ofĀ ātitan scienceā, they were genetically engineered (if you want to put it that way) to have titan like abilities while still maintaining their human form and sense of self being. Created to protect the Fritz family (royal blood), to eventually being ostracised for their dismissal of the plan to wipe Eldianās memories. Therefore banished, but allowed to live, I can only see there being one reason why - they would be still useful at some point and their deaths/extinction would be wasteful.Ā
From what we know and can tell from mere viewing, the Ackermans are very skilled and powerful beings that have āhostsā or attachments (I like this name better) to channel their goals, strength and energy into. They were made to protect, fight and survive. The only surviving Ackermans are Levi and Mikasa.
They cannot be affected by the founding titan and their memories cannot be altered. But, this brings about another question. Why were they created to protect the founding titan, yet could not be controlled by it? The theory with this bloodline is that they can do more than what we see, that they themselves donāt know it yet. One in particular can alter realities - that being Mikasa (as we donāt have mass amounts of information on Leviās experiences other than his surge of power awakenings demonstrated throughout the manga to confirm his part) due to fact Levi really only knew he was an Ackerman within his 30ā²s after the previous Ackerman - Kenny, dies and informs him of this. Mikasa has always been aware.Ā
MikasaāsĀ āPowerā ultimately has something to do with the Attack Titan and the Founding titan - that being Eren and Ymir combined. In past loops, I believe each time she has seen Eren die she has saidĀ āsee you later, Erenā... hence the ending of 138 and the beginning of the manga. Isayama did say the beginning would relate to the ending. Each time this happens they are transcended to the point Eren wakes up at the tree within the walls to begin once more, its the only clear explanation for why Eren comments of her hair length. The attack titan itself is the component of Ymir that captivates her freedom, it continues to move forward for 2000 years each successor until one has the power (the desire for freedom like her) to release her from enslavement to the power of the titans. In this instance Eren too has been a slave to the power, lets for arguments sake blame Grisha for passing it on to him.Ā
Again, with the Ackermans there is something Iāve always noticed between Levi and Mikasa - they have never touched skin to skin. It has always been over their clothing. I wonder if their Ackerman powers may stem similar to how Eren draws memories from contact with the royal family, i.e. Historia. They need to touch in order to access Paths and manifest it into their control. Eren is aware of this due to his connection to Ymir - there is heavy implied material to denote the idea of Ragnarok and reincarnation. Eren is the reincarnate of Ymir and previously I donāt think they were aware of this.
For anyone not familiar with the termĀ āRagnorokā - its definition has multiple meanings in Norse mythology. Particularly -Ā development, origin, cause, relation and fate. It is a series of events that often lead to a great battle, the deaths of multiple people of importance to the ultimate end revelation of the world being remade and fertile (the opposite of Zekeās plan) with the remainingĀ āgodsā returning and ātwoā human survivors repopulating the world. I personally believe this to be either two of these: Levi and Mikasa or Eren and Historia by the way of Ymir as the ultimate god, but just in different ways. The Ragnorok element is particularly of importance within Germanic studies, this would connect with Shingeki no Kyojin since it is implied its set in early germany/europe and given characters name origins - it makes sense.
The two human survivors are that of Lif and Lifbrasir (shown below) who survive byĀ āhidingā in the woods while the great battle commences.Ā
They repopulate the world starting with a daughter. In germanic regions, the concept of mankind originated from trees is an ancient notionĀ āthe tree of lifeā essentially. Trees have a massive importance and connection in Shingeki no Kyojin, we see Eren wake up at one in the beginning, the main Path coordinate resembles a tree, Ymir originated from trees and being within the woods would indicateĀ ātreesā. This would make me more inclined to believe the Eren and Historia theory to be likely, simply because Historia is all the way back in Paradis and potentially Eren himself by transferring subconscious. To me it seems very likely the leaked final panel released by Yams himself is Eren holding a child rather than anyone else as whoever this figure is tells the child they are free and this could only relate to both Ymir and Eren, the ones who sought freedom. This could mean in this instance Levi and Mikasa are theĀ āgodsā, the ones with the power to restore and mend, again through the concept of the Ackerman Gene being more than what meets the eye. Ymir will be reborn ultimately and no longer enslaved as will Eren.Ā
Ragnarok and Shingeki no Kyojin combined have connotations ofĀ āfateā being a big part of their depths. It is fated. Everything is. Just like Erenās death and potentially ability to be reborn into another timeline. Just like Erenās fate to obtain the founding titan and attack titan, both very powerful titans in the manipulation of time and events. Eren makes a statement around chapter 123 in Paths when talking with Zeke that if someone tried to take his freedom, no matter who, he would remove theirs. That he has been like that since birth because he wasĀ āborn into this worldā.
Zeke:Ā āSince birth?ā
this further implies fate. He was born free, he expresses detest for people who arenāt free and bound by something, 2000 years, Ymir etc. This only ties together if Eren himself in past lives was someone with the same views and personality traits, like Mikasa, except hers are the opposite. Paths has always been there and everything that has happened in the past is imbedded within its clutches through Ymir. These two titans needed to be combined, Grisha was informed by Eren himself through Kruger and future versions of himself that he had to obtain the founder or nothing could be changed. Grisha is even seen asking Eren to show him everything that happens, whether carla dies etc. He did not have full control, this was made for Erenās inhabitant period and he did not have access to all memories due to only being able to access the ones the future successor sends back in time. Like the mirror scene for example, Eren is speaking to someone else, not himself. Grisha was only instructed to go within the walls and have a family. Eren was instructed to save everyone. Remember that the common rule with time is that you cannot change the past or it significantly alters the future.
I believe all the memories (the ones we are seeing even now) are actually in paths, the story has always had an indication it is beingĀ ānarratedā by someone - in most instances this is Armin. This has implied he will survive into the future, but that others may not. How this will happen...I can only theorise that Ymir will factor into who lives or dies. She will need to leave paths however, the only way the titan curse will end is if she leaves and no one is there to build titans. She will be either reborn to capture her freedom or reborn through Eren for them both to obtain the same dream. There has been multiple theories that some other titan other than the attack titan could be the key or another character, like that of the Ackermans or armin for example as I do think the trio concept is likely. But, remember the manga is calledĀ āShingeki no Kyojinā meaningĀ āthe attack titanā - its always been the key and Eren is that key...again, key? Eren. scarf? Mikasa. Equals symbolism.
At the end of the day, the characters who I feel personally will tie together the ending are Eren, Ymir, Historia and Levi, Mikasa, Armin - both trios on different sides of the coin. Just remember, this isnāt the type of story where the characters get what they desire and that they could die without obtaining these desires. Erwin died before learning the truth of the outside world. Hanji died. Sasha died, Niccolo lost her. Floch did not live to see Eldian rule. Levi may have killed Zeke, but what for? He killed a different version of him, not the one who murdered innocents in Shinganshina. Levi lost every attachment of his. Mikasa lost Eren. Iād be angry and sad for him, but Eren also could lose his freedom by striking a deal with Ymir for her own freedom. But! he could free the world and his friends through both Mikasa and Armin, the chain will break, the titan curse will end and he will cease to exist or be lost in Paths dormant, unlike Ymir for 2000 years. This would be a good culmination of Erenās character, extremely heart breaking, but fitting. A character who only sought freedom for humanity. He is humanityās hope after all. Remember, Kaji Yuki (Erenās Japanese voice actor) expressed extreme sadness at learning Erenās fate from Isayama. It has always been a manga that indicates a bittersweet ending, so this could also be highly likely. (Eren is my favourite character...so this guts my heart from my chest)
To conclude, these are merely my own speculation of the final events within 139 and although sad of its ending, my excitement for this final instalment knows no bounds. I can only wish for the best and I know Isayama will deliver.Ā

Last Stand of the Wreckers PsyOps records- Can we PLEASE Hire Some More Mental Health Specialists?
Rung gets a lot of play in the Last Stand of the Wreckers bonus materials. He was still more of a play-on-words as opposed to an actual character at the time, so I suppose it makes sense.
Rotorstorm walked into his appointment with Rung and immediately started hyping himself up. Thatās very telling. When Rung asked about his time at Simanzi, he sort of shut down and wasnāt able to hide behind his defense mechanism of being the funniest, coolest, bravest, all-around-bestest guy in the room.
Rotorstorm was basically born, then thrown into the Aerial Program, where all that awful stuff with Jetstream happened. Dude was beating up an infant.
Motherfuckerās got some trauma, obviously, but apparently thatās not enough to disqualify him from Wrecker duty. Wrecker duty that he didnāt even want, I should add.
You gotta sign up for the Wrecker roster; heād been on it before, but had dropped out to teach instead. Either someone set this poor guy up to die, or Jetstream was wrong this whole time and he really just is that good. Not that it mattered much- the damage is done. Rotorstorm has crippling self-doubt, and is also dead.
Pyro suffers from a programming disorder known as primus apotheosis, identified by the suffererās need to emulate the great Optimus Prime. Many Autobots are afflicted with this disorder, and even a few Decepticons have been known to have it. The fact that Pyro had primus apotheosis makes panels like this:
-all the more sad. This is a guy whoās had his own personality overwritten- by his own hero worship- in an attempt to be greater than himself. Pyro is by no means a slouch when it comes to saving the day- he saved an entire platoon of Autobots as a member of the Resistance.
Then Simanzi happened.
There isnāt a ton known about the Simanzi Massacre, only that it was so bad, the Cybertronian population was halved by the time it was over. Pyro would have been just another statistic, had it not been for Optimus Primeās intervention. Does survivorās guilt have some part in his disorder? Itās certainly possible. All that can be said for sure is that nobody got out of Simanzi unscathed.
Pyro was approved for the Wreckers with reservations, seeing as primus apotheosis sufferers can and will sacrifice themselves for others if given any wiggle room in which to do so. The Wreckers were just lucky that Pyro wanted to go out in style. It didnāt really work for him, but points for trying.
Guzzle isnāt his legal name. Much like Chromedome, heās called what heās called due to meddling with the war. Originally Pneumatix, and a forklift of all things- the name being a play on the word āPneumaticā, because forklifts work by using compressed air to lift things- he entered the Body Augmentation Program. This turned him into something called a ruination tank. Thatās why his turret accounts for nearly half of his height- they basically turned a Mini Cooper into a weapon of mass destruction. Because heās meant to be actually very tiny, his body compensates for the added stress by being so insanely fuel-inefficient, he has to constantly eat. Thus the nickname.
Guzzle didnāt exactly impress Rung at his appointment, coming across as a rather cold, distant individual when it came to his own emotions, describing his own near-death experience at the hands of the Decepticons in terms of what weaponry was used to try to kill him. Still, he was approved for the Garrus-9 mission.
Itās at this point that you have to wonder just how many people are actually on the waiting list for this group.
First Aid about had a panic attack when he thought Springer was inviting him to join the Wreckers, so itās obviously a known thing that members donāt last terribly long, or at least, itās something that can be inferred through reading about them.
Looking at past members, itās rather telling what sort of person is attracted to the Wrecker lifestyle; Whirl is an emotional powder keg thatās constantly trying to light his own fuse, Impactor defied wartime sanctions to murder the his rivals, Roadbuster is a hardcore drug abuser who ripped someoneās spine out, and Kup can only function in polite society if heās smoking medicinal marijuana at all times. These are not stable individuals. Springer is the odd exception, and Iām counting Perceptor as a borderline case, because he went through a massive personality shift that led him to where he was within the group. He may appear ānormalā when compared to the others, but that guyās for sure got some issues that he keeps close to his chest.
Given all of this, itās not really much of a leap to say that Rotorstorm got thrown back on the list because they didnāt have anyone else who wanted in on this madness. Itās also not much of a leap to say that the only reason any of these guys got approved to join was because there werenāt any other options. The psych-screenings were probably just done as a professional obligation at that point. Rung, for all his faults, was likely working with what heād been given.
Iām not exactly sure where these profiles were meant to reside within Last Standās timeline, given that Rotorstorm and Pyro are classified as being probably alive, whereas Ironfist is not.
Ironfist spends a good portion of his appointment with Rung fanboying over the Wreckers, as he is wont to do. When he actually gets around to talking about himself, heās not nearly as eloquent or organized. Rung did not approve Ironfist for the mission, based solely on his lack of experience in the field of busting heads. He only got on the team due to Prowlās interference, as has been established before.
Fisitron is revealed to have been a writer of many talents, publishing articles for all ages and reading levels. He was an author you could grow up on.
Impactorās profile was written at the time of his probationary hearing, and it seems to imply that Rung may be a bit of an idiot. He had dismissed the guard who was present, in an attempt to get Impactor to be more open with him. This went about as well as that sort of thing usually goes for the only mental health specialist on all of Cybertron.
Looks like someoneās got a fear of mnemosurgery. With this little event in his past, itās very surprising that Rung tried to offer it to Fortress Maximus in MTMTE #6.
Maybe Rung accidentally stuck a really big magnet to the side of his head at some point, thus erasing his memory files, because I know that I sure wouldnāt be offering that sort of thing if this was the average reaction to it.
After Impactor had had his moment, he shared some of his war stories with Rung- apparently his lack of a right hand was inspired by meeting Deathās Head.
Though Deathās Head isnāt directly named, itās pretty obvious thatās who itās intended to be, given that heās mentioned as āricocheting from universe to universe after leaping through an exploding time portal.ā This is in reference to the events that took place in the Marvel UK storyline āThe Legacy of Unicron!ā This is also what happened to him prior to the events of Eugenesis.
Rung is aware of these events due to having read Wreckers: Declassified. Iām not sure how I feel about Wreckers: Declassified being a valid resource for Rung to pull from, considering Fisitron self-described with the word ādramatistā in āBulletsā.
The session had to be ended when Rung tried to psychoanalyze Impactor in a way he wasnāt ready for, as the man threatened to crush his brain like a grape between his fingers.
Lot of Eugenesis vibes in this entry.
We donāt get any history on Impactor, as itās been scrubbed from the record at someoneās request. Is it related to his relationship with Megatron? The events that would eventually be revealed in Sins of the Wreckers? Maybe itās just left like that to create intrigue for the eventual sequel series, Sins of the Wreckers. Who knows? I certainly donāt.
Thatās the end of Rungās reports, but we still have a couple more characters to get through.
Rotorstorm, Snare, and Swindle must go to the same body shop, because theyāre the only guys who have eyes/visors that arenāt a primary color. Itās an interesting little character design choice, and I canāt help but wonder if there was some sort of reason for it.
ā¦I genuinely wasnāt expecting an answer for that. Neat!
Snareās kind of a loner, which works out pretty well for him, since heās usually on surveillance duty. Heās also a sadist, having developed some nasty ways to keep prisoners in line. āMorphcore stimulationā is mentioned, and itās less fun than it sounds, not that it sounds terribly fun in the first place. The fact that even Snare thought Overlord was a bit much is very telling.
If youāre unfamiliar with the term āmorphcoreā, donāt feel bad about it, because itās only ever been used in one piece of media up until this point. Morphcores were a small bundle of nerves at the base of the Cybertronian brain that controlled transformation, as explained in Eugenesis. This term would quickly be switched out for the more well-known ātransformation cogā for brand cohesion. The really funny thing is that that this section is attributed to Nick Roche. It would seem that TMUK is a hard state of mind to shake off.
This wonāt be the only time Roche and Roberts team-up to completely miss the mark on how the IDW continuity functions- the Dire Wraith in The Revolution oneshot they wrote together was running off of the Marvel UK iteration of the species.
Overlord doesnāt have a profile, per se, but rather a transcript of a correspondence between Megatron and a guy named Gorelock.
Gorelock apologizes for not getting in contact sooner, explaining that the reason heās been radio silent is because Overlord fucking showed up out of nowhere, after cutting and running from the Decepticause years prior. Whether Megatron had actually heard Overlordās message or just figured it out from context clues isnāt clarified.
Gorelock super-duper promises that he and his guys didnāt just stand there pissing themselves in fear as Overlord strolled through their ranks, and they super-duper totally fought him until Gorelock decided to hear the guy out. For sure. Absolutely.
It turns out, Overlord was never actually dismissed from the rank of the Decepticons, which means that he outranks Gorelock, and Gorelock was therefore compelled to grant him a favor.
The favor is wrecking an entire empireās shop. Gorelock complies with this request, purely due to being outranked. Absolutely. For sure.
Once the contract was completed in full, Overlord fucked off into space.
You know, not enjoying your hobbies anymore can be a sign of depression.
And thatās why Gorelock hasnāt kept in touch! Iām sure Megtron will be very understanding about this whole thing.
Or not!

time to write out literally all my thoughts as someone who canāt read Japanese!
I actually saw the first few pages when people were posting them because apparently the first half of the chapter comes out the second week? I didnāt post my thoughts cause I wanted to do them all at the same time
Page 1! Well this is fun, I absolutely love the expressions in this manga (I feel like me going on about the art in this manga is going to be a theme lol). But the subtle differences between how Ashiya looks and how he looks when Sakae is controlling him are amazing. And it isnāt just the eye color, but just everything with how Sakae acts and carries himself (face included) really is awesome. And it doesnāt feel like just slapping a new face on Ashiyaās body, I genuinely can see Ashiya making this expression when Sakae isnāt possessing him (if he wasnāt such a cinnamon roll). Also the shock on Abenoās face is not something we see too often. He has his normal shocked face but this feels more raw than in the past? Like his eyes seem wider and the way his hair is makes it seem like he basically just did a double take. MMMMMMMMMM this is good shit. But story wise, I assume this page is just restating the fact that you really donāt wanna use influence on a parasitic shrub possessed demon.
Page 2 and 3! Abeno knowās whatās up, or at least it seems so. It would be more surprising if he didnāt tbh. Also I wonder if Sakae kind of knew this was going to happen? Considering he was trying to keep them away, I assume he did. At the very least he does not seem shocked at all to see Aoi like that at all. Speaking of Aoi, they are def trapped where they are at. That whole is well large enough for them to get through and attack them again, but they are still on the ground it seems. I am guessing it has to do with the tree we saw coming from their tail last chapter. They are still 110% mad though.
3-4! It looks like it isnāt just the trees that are keeping Aoi down, I thought the roots attaching the main body to the ground had been ripped up but it looks like there are some remaining. Sakae is as gentle as ever, yes just toss away his injured arm, great idea. Now Abeno is in even more pain. The wound though is really deep, looks like two large gashes, which Sakae actually starts to dress (rest in peace, kimono sleeve) (also while abeno is trying to get his arm out of the inner kimono (idk what is is called), we can see the medicine Abeno always carries around! I love the attention to detail in this manga)
5-6! Yup, page 5 doesn't do it justice, but page six really shows the extent of the damage one of the gashes did. Super nasty scar going to go there. We see some more of Aoi though, and do they chirp? Like what cats do? Cause murder cat looks super cute on page 5 and I donāt know how to feel about this.
They look like baby here and I want to protect them. Abeno seems to be bringing up the medicine, though I really donāt know what this would do to Aoi other than basically kill them. Which honestly, may be for the best? I know itās a bit messed up, but it has been stated before that they are obviously past the point of getting them help, and leaving them there would be super dangerous.
7-8! I am making another assumption that Sakae doesnāt know what the medicine does. Which I have a current theory that the medicine is a new development for the underworld. (if such a medicine existed before Aoi left, why wouldnāt they use it on them?) Which would also mean that Sakae wouldnāt know about it either. My guess from the last pages seem to be correct as there is a panel showing Aoi burning, which seems pretty deathy to me. I honestly donāt know what they are going to do, though I think for now, they should be getting back, reporting the situation and getting help for themselves. Aoi seems really stuck here so I donāt think they are a direct threat to the underworld immediately. (Unless Aoi manages to escape the island and oh boy that would not be good) Abeno seems pretty determined, though, so regardless Aoi is most likely going to meet their actual end.
9-10! Aoi is starting to go to sleep here, Sakae seems really good at first aid (wonder where/why he learned that ;) Maybe a certain lady who often gets sick?) Not a whole lot happens, I think these are mostly showing the passage of time, and it seems Abeno is putting away the medicine for now. Which good move, my boy. Come back to take care of murder cat later. Also I wonder if all those trees are from Aoiās parasitic shrub. That would be terrifying if that is the case. It could really show how long they have been there, trapped and going mad because of the shrub.
11-12! Good lord all of them are looking super cute this chapter. Sakae you canāt do this to me, just all your movements and facial expressions are justlasdkhjg;lakshjdg. Ashiya is cute in his own right, but this is a different type of cute. Why are all these characters like this and please donāt stop making all these characters like this. We get a good look at Aoiās spine and it makes me sad (though also could give more insight to how the shrub basically takes over? Using the spinal cord to get to the brain seems like a good path to take if the shrubās goal is to spread like any other parasite (which also makes sense with the going mad thing, kind of like rabies almost) I am glad Abenoās arm is being supported and held still with what they had on hand. Still looks super painful though.
13-14! And they are out! At least out of the pit where they can really easily run if they need to. Sakae is starting to get tired, so I wonder how much longer he can go on? I hope he can stay awake long enough to get back to the mononokean because I highly doubt Abeno can carry an unconscious Ashiya back. He would most likely have to wait for Ashiya to wake back up before moving on and who knows how long that will take. Part of page 13 made me go back to see the last few pages, but it looks like Aoiās front right paw is stuck in the ground :( good cause they are most likely really stuck there and probably wont be able to escape easy but it makes me sad to see the previous master of the mononokean in such a state.
15-16! Oof the tiredness is really showing in the first panel. Get out of there quick so you both can rest! I am guessing Abeno is asking about why Sakae said those things in the flower field.Like how Aoi is dead and such, and honestly did Sakae lie? Aoi, as they were in the past, is dead. They are completely over taken and do not recognize even the child they basically raised.
17-18! Oh boy Sakae is getting more and more tired, Abeno is asking about the golden butterfly and can you two just get going? Yaāll have limited time here!!!!! Though I wonder if Sakae used his influence on one of the butterflies to communicate to Ashiya? it seems very similar? Or a butterfly made from pure influence? Which would explain how it disappeared when Ashiya grabbed it?
I am going to stop the page format because uh.... WHAT. First off Abeno was def asking about the influence/parasitic shrub thing that Sakae brought up. And WE ACTUALLY LEARN ABOUT IT NEXT CHAPTER. This is huge cause oml this feels like a rare moment. Normally mysteries like this linger for a few chapters, simmer and make us suffer. BUT WE GOT A NEW BRAND OF SUFFERING TODAY FOLKS! Like I theorized it a bit on why I didnāt think Aoi was the one Sakae used his influence on, due to thinking that Aoi being infected years before picking up Abeno seemed super dangerous and didnāt feel like something they would do. I DIDNāT KNOW YOU CAN USE INFLUENCE TO CURE THE PARASITIC SHRUB THOUGH! PAGE 22 IS SUFFERING! PAGE 22 HAS ALL THE ANSWERS! Like we now know what happened, or at least have enough facts to be able to piece it together! Aoi and Sakae went out for a job, either they find out that the demon is infected or know and are going to try to help them out. Aoi somehow gets infected by this demon and Sakae uses his influence to get rid of the growing infection only to die himself as the parasitic shrub is not meant to live in the human body. This explains why Aoi was so beat up over his death, because IT WAS THEIR FAULT. It explains why Sakae would use his influence on a demon that is infected, because it is Aoi, their employer and friend. He probably wasnāt meaning to die at all, just thinking thatĀ āhey letās just get rid of this shrub from Aoi so they donāt die because they are an important part of the Underworld (though AU where Sakae canāt do this and has to become the next master of the mononokean ;) )
We also see the aftermath, it is almost like he becomes some form of demon himself, and actually looks infected with the shrub. I doubt it is the same sort of situation because he doesnāt become a tree? I am honestly unsure on how this affected him. He does go and meet his son a few months later,Ā (wait or was that Aoi because between the two pages we see a sort of continuation with the hand on the left (aoiās hand) but we also see theĀ āveinsā of the shrub which hints towards Sakae? I like to think that Sakae visited baby Ashiya, so I am going to go with the assumption it is Sakae visiting till I am proven otherwise) and smol Ashiya is always cute. Ashiya does seem toĀ ānoticeā something? or he is just a baby and babies cry A LOT. We see SakaeĀ āinfectā the butterfly he uses to communicate with Ashiya in the flower field. Wonder if he tried doing the same in the past with Abeno, only Abeno cannot hear his words.
ALSO GUYS I TOLD YOU TO GET OUT OF THERE NOW WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO? Ashiya is now completely passed out, Abeno cannot carry him back and now they gotta just chill there till Ashiya wakes back up. I know it is awesome to have questions answered, but please.Ā
Though I guess somehow they managed cause Ashiya wakes up in what I can only assume is the Legeslatorās place? It is def not the mononokean (too large and im sure we would be hearing a bell the moment Ashiya woke up) but it could be Korouās place. Not sure how Abeno managed, but he probably found a way to get them out of there. Rip golden eyes, though :( Guess they were just either the side effect to using that much influence or a hint that Sakae was just kind of hanging around in case shit hits the fan.Ā
There is incense burning, making a guess this is either a preventative measure against the shrub or something to help wake Ashiya up faster. Ashiya is alone and it seems he is shaken because of what Sakae explained (I am guessing it was similar to his dreams when he subconsciously used his influence and he was dreaming about Sakaeās past)
This chapter was amazing, answered so many things and saw enough cute to really counter balance theĀ āwhat the actual fuckā this chapter brought along with it.

First Take Review: Valvet Soulshine Preamplifier &Ā A4 Mk.II Amplifier
I stumbled upon the Valvet brand fairly randomly. Looking back at my original email to Alfred Kainz of highend-electronics, Valvetās US distributor, it appears I caught wind of the niche German marque via a review of their E2 amplifier ($2,990) on 10audio.com. In it, Jerry Siegel compared it with some very well-respected solid state and tube competition - Pass, First Watt, Cary - and came away smitten with the musicality of the little 20-watter. I perused the rest of the Valvet line and was immediately drawn to how it blended sleek, unassuming styling with a focus on tried and true design approaches. Tube preamps with solid state amps (no Class D in sight), super quality passive parts, minimalist Class A and single-ended topologies, all in urban-lifestyle friendly packaging... Valvet was speaking my language. The relative obscurity of the brand (at least here in the States) and lack of online reviews only added to the intrigue. A review was clearly in order, and Alfred was kind enough to oblige us with the Soulshine tube preamp ($5,890 in the configuration we received) and A4 Mk.II monoblock amplifier ($7,890).Ā
Alfred provided this description of the company:
Valvet is located in Bargteheide, in the north of Germany, near Hamburg. What we have here is a very consistent vision by designer Knut Cornils in design and execution. Knut founded the company in 1991 and has been building Class-A amps since 1982. Knut has evolved a distinctive architecture of Class-A modules using high-quality components in minimal designs, featuring valve pre-amplifiers with separate power supply and solid-state mono-block power amplifiers.
Valvet Soulshine Tube Preamp ($5,890)
The Soulshine is Valvetās top preamplifier line and comes in a number of configurations. The model we received is a line stage and includes a compact external power supply and stepped attenuator with remote control. Recently, two further upgrades became available: the Soulshine IIz ($8,890) featuring a dual-mono external supply, and the Soulshine Trio ($10,990) with built-in phono stage and quad supplies. @mgd-tawwā has the full review of our base configuration coming out imminently, but I'll share some observations from my time with the unit.
I really dug the sleek look of the Soulshine - super slender, with a minimalist front panel sporting two polished chrome knobs, a 2-digit volume display and the Valvet "V" softly glowing in blue. There's zero panel markings, which makes input selection a bit of a guessing game, and slightly odd is the fact that the free-spinning volume knob (it's a rotary encoder for the electronically-controlled attenuator) has a dimple to indicate position, despite it being completely uncorrelated with the actual volume setting. The attenuator itself works extremely well - volume control is a bit on the coarser side, definitely not 1dB across the range, but adjustments are quick, smooth and noiseless other than the gentle clicking of the internal relays. Best of all, the outputs are quickly muted to eliminate any possibility of transients on power-up or turn-off which can be a real hazard with tube designs. The back-panel features 4 inputs - 2 balanced XLR, 2 unbalanced RCA - and both RCA and XLR outputs. The power supply is external, connected with a light, flexible and detachable umbilical cord. Under the hood, the circuit is simple and the parts are high quality, with relatively neat hand-soldered point-to-point wiring (Teflon-sleeved silver in our model). Like any tube component, it'll need some room to breath, but it generates a fairly moderate amount of heat and will fit in shelves with less clearance than typical tube pre's with tall chassis and upright tubes.
Tonally I found the Valvet to be fairly nondescript, and I mean that in the best possible way. There is just a hint of extra juice in the mid-bass, and the low end isn't as extended and tightly-controlled as the solid-state Bryston BP-17 Cubed ($4,500), but otherwise things felt quite neutral and in order - another example of the convergence of tube and solid state tonality over time. The top end had clarity and extension and there was neither the upper-midrange forwardness nor the rolled-off treble that one sometimes gets with tubes.
What it did have was a uniquely singing tone in the midrange that made it particularly expressive with soft melodic passages. E.g. on a performance of the Rachmaninoff Romance by cellist Alicia Weilerstein [Tidal], a passionate rendition of the theme is followed by a pianissimo echo. Through the Soulshine, the delicate passage sounded wonderfully quiet and intimate, yet still expressive; on the Bryston it came across a bit threadbare and pale. Every once in a while this could also come across as a bit of thickening, like just a dash too much cornstarch in the sauce - e.g. with Magdalena Kozena's Mozart arias, the ethereal floatiness of her voice came across slightly more opaque than I heard with the Pass Labs XP10. Tradeoffs, tradeoffs...
Bryston BP-17 Cubed, Valvet Soulshine and Pass Labs XP10 locked in battle
I (or more accurately, my wife and I) heard a bit more editorializing going on with harmonics and timbre. One late evening I was playing some tunes on the Soulshine, Beethoven Symphony No. 2 to be precise, and my wife commented that the orchestra sounded rather sharp (pitch-wise) and nasal. Normally this is how American woodwind players describe European ensembles (who do indeed tune their A's higher and use totally different technique, reeds and often instruments). But in this case, it was a Montreal Symphony performance which she never previously commented on sounding particularly European. Switching back to one of the solid state pre's (the Bryston or Pass XP10) restored the expected timbre - her ears are particularly sensitive, and I can only surmise she was picking up on harmonic distortion being introduced by the tubed Soulshine. I could hear it as well, but to me it was pretty mild, and probably 99% of people won't notice it to the same degree.
The other area where THD may be coming into play is soundstaging. The Valvet has a healthy dose of that holographic tube feel, suspending instruments across a deep, airy and three-dimensional space... so much so that my wife actually felt the sound to be ātoo 3D,ā something I doubt youāll ever hear an audiophile say. Nelson Pass under his First Watt enterprise shared a design for a very simple 2nd-order harmonic distortion generator, called the H2, as a fun way to add some color to sound. He made this interesting observation about the phase of such distortion:
So why is the phase important? Well, it's a subtle thing. I don't suppose everyone can hear it, and fewer particularly care, but from listening tests we learn that there is a tendency to interpret negative phase 2nd as giving a deeper soundstageĀ and improved localizationĀ than otherwise. Positive phase seems to put the instruments and vocals closer and a little more in-your-face with enhanced detail.
My sense was that the Soulshine adds more of the ānegative phaseā second harmonic - it has that deep holographic stage, without sounding up front and ātechnicolorā as some tube designs are wont to. Again, to my wifeās ears this effect sounded a little phasey and unrealistic, but Iām guessing many audiophiles will eat it up.
Some other notable and positive aspects of the Soulshine... it's extremely quiet, with nice black backgrounds. In fact, I found it to be nearly dead silent even when cranked to max volume, and considerably quieter than the Bryston which always had some level of audible hiss. Dynamics were strong, the Bryston capturing big hits in the bottom end with more slam and edge, the Valvet otherwise having more verve and nuance - piano in particular had great weight and presence on crescendi. There was a sense of ease, with plenty of headroom even on the loudest, most cacophonous orchestral passages, though I did find dynamics varied a bit with the volume setting, a likely consequence of placing the attenuator after the tube gain stages thus creating variable output impedance. Separation of instruments was excellent - whether listening to a small chamber ensemble or symphony orchestra, tonally-adjacent voices like viola vs. second violin came through with clarity and color. And while lesser preamps can blur the region below middle C (262Hz) into a bit of a soupy blend, the Soulshine clearly distinguished the lower registers of the cello from the left hand of piano accompaniment on sonatas.
All in all, the Soulshine struck me as a lovely and enjoyable preamp. Musically expressive and pure, it was significantly more engaging than the Bryston BP-17 Cubed, and made for an interesting counterpoint to the Pass Labs XP10 ($5,250 before being replaced by the XP12). I didnāt mention the Pass so far as @mgd-taww also uses the XP10 as his reference preamp, so Iāll let him do the honors of an in-depth comparison in his coming review.
Valvet A4 Mk.II Class A Monoblock amplifier ($7,890)
The A4 represents the 2nd generation of Valvetās original Class A monoblock design, the A3.5. This latest āMk.IIā iteration includes 33% larger power transformers (400W), more filtering (132,000ĀµF each!) and upgraded parts throughout including audiophile-brand resistors and cotton-insulated silver wiring. Allegedly this brings the performance of the Mk.II closer to Valvet's flagship A4e ($9,890), a souped-up 4-chassis model with larger external power supplies and a bit more power. Despite the Class A design, the A4 is downright petite, each monoblock measuring just 230 x 110 x 310 mm (9 x 4.4 x 12.2 inches) but feeling hefty and solid - I donāt have the weight on me, butĀ youāll definitely want to firmly grasp each one with two hands. Power is rated at 55 watts/8Ī©, 90 watts/4Ī© in full Class A operation. In what seems to be a new craze (Pass Labs XA25 and models from GamuT come to mind), the output stage uses a single pair of high-power transistors per channel, and the signal path is direct-coupled with no global negative feedback.
My first night with the A4 ended in disaster. I still don't know what happened - my best guess is a wire got crossed in the hookup to my REL T-9 subwoofer - but upon powering up one of the monoblocks, sparks, a small flame and smoke ensued. Clearly something shorted out somewhere, and the A4 being a true minimalist design with zero protection circuitry means any mishap can end in catastrophe. Fortunately no human, animal or other device was harmed, but after weeks of anticipation to hear the amps, I was heartbroken. In my desperation, I listened a bit to one speaker through the other functioning amp, just to get a taste... and even from that crippled mono reproduction, I could already tell there was something very sweet and special about the A4, which made my misfortune even more agonizing.
Alfred Kainz was extremely understanding and had the amps shipped back to Knut @ Valvet for repair. A while later I got them back, and this time I completely steered clear of the REL hookup, instead feeding the subwoofer from my preamp just to be safe. The amps have worked absolutely flawlessly since so the only lesson here is to be extremely careful setting them up, which the manual also states very clearly...
With that out of the way... I think these are some very special amps. While I've heard Class A amps plenty of times in other systems, it's my first time having one in my own, and it was easy to hear from the first notes what all the fuss is about. There's a purity and density of tone, a freedom from electronic haze and grain, a fluidity of expression that's subtle in absolute terms but significant in visceral ones. Great Class A amps have given me the feeling of emancipating music from the chains of typical solid-state limitations, making Class AB (and certainly Class D) designs sound synthetic and mechanical by comparison. The Valvet is delightfully expressive, sweet and pure, with an honest and unforced way of capturing the warmth and beauty of a performance. The Bryston 4B Cubed, a 300W Class AB powerhouse, impressed me with how it carried some of these lovely qualities to a surprising degree, but the Valvet communicates with a higher level of musical connection and tactile presence.
At times, I've heard Class A amps come off a bit dark and slow vs. a very transparent Class AB design. I hear no such issues with the Valvet - in fact, it has all the speed of the Bryston 4B3, with even more dynamic alacrity and nuance. Twists and turns of a phrase are conveyed with uninhibited momentum. Its highs are as sweet and refined as Iāve heard in my system, but with no sacrifice of brilliance. Vocals have richness and complexity, and the variegated harmonics of the violin and oboe have startling trueness. And while it doesn't have the big Bryston's bass slam and depth, it still packs plenty enough wallop to be satisfying with rock and electronic fare. The Mk.II upgrades included a significant stiffening of the power supply, seemingly to good effect - close your eyes, and you would never guess you were listening to an amp rated at just 55 watts. It's by no means a current monster so I would stick with at least moderately-efficient speakers that donāt dip too low in impedance, but Iāve heard 150-watt amps that donāt have this level of control and explosiveness. Certainly compared to a 60-watt integrated like the Ayre AX7e or Bryston B60, the Valvet sounds like a powerhouse.
I'll have much more to say about this wonderful amplifier in the coming months. One of the things I'll need to work on is getting some good comparisons on hand (the Pass XA25 and XA30.8 come to mind). And I have a much larger, 3.5-way reference speaker on order which will stress the Valvet's drive and current capability far more than my current 2-way monitors. In the meantime, if you value beautiful, engaging yet truthful reproduction, I strongly recommend an audition of the Valvet A4 Mk.II - it's captivated me enough to earn a long-term home in my system.

rabbit tour!
i just made aĀ āshelfā so all my stuffed animals werenāt crowded on the windowsill and i used this as an opportunity to take pictures of all the ones i have with me so here we go!
this is artemis, a majestic and powerful silver rabbit with a very dramatic backstory
basically i was 5 hours away from home on a work trip and i saw her in the window of a shop BUT it hadnāt opened yet so i had to walk away not knowing if I would have time to get back to the shop before it closed, if someone else would buy the rabbit, or if i even had enough money to buy the rabbit in the first placeĀ
the most I was willing to spend was $20, not because I donāt think this rabbit is a priceless artifact of beauty, but bc im a peasant and my job was technically volunteer work and paid less than minimum wage but ANYWAY i go on and on about this fucking rabbit to anyone who will listen, my coworkers are plotting ways to murder me that will look like an accident, but we get back to the store and the rabbits still there AND ITS ExACTLY $20 SO I IMMEDIATELY BUY IT WITH NO REGRETS BEST PURCHASE OF MY LIFEĀ
here are some little baby babies i have clipped to my backpack (can you tell i like rabbits???), the yellow one on top is bun might for obvious reasons
Ā the one in the middle is technically unnamed but i call him sergeant pez bc hes a pez dispenser and he was in one of my dads old military trunks for like a million years until he was cleaning them out and gave him to meĀ
the light green one is the newest addition, her name is mochi and shes so fucking soft you guys its like petting a delicate cloudĀ
these arent rabbits but theyre still valid so shut up, the black cat is named agugu (short for akutagawa) bc i was into bung/ou s/tray d/ogs at the timeĀ
the panda in the middle was a gift from my roommate and her name is monochromeĀ because i have another panda back home thats purple and her name is. purple. so i wanted to stick with the theme here
the white tiger is named at2shi after atsushi (from b/ungou st/ray d/ogs again) who can turn into a white tiger but also i already had ANOTHER non-white tiger that was named atsushi so this one is at2shiĀ
more wild thangs that arent rabbits!
the elephant is ŃŠ»Š¾Š½ orĀ āsloaneā,Ā ŃŠ»Š¾Š½ means elephant in russian and itās kind of pronounced like the name sloane so itās a very deep complex and intellectual name, clearly.Ā ŃŠ»Š¾Š½ is a puppet that shrieks like the souls of the damned when you squeeze him and he was a gift from my high school russian teacher because i would be Blessed with the duty of makingĀ ŃŠ»Š¾Š½ scream at students who were speaking english in class, heās a good comradeĀ
the tiger is atsushi, im sure you can figure out his deal based on at2shi, i got him at the zoo and hes lovely
the red panda with the minnie ears might have had another name at some point but during my regrettable b/s/d phase i started calling him chuuya and it stuck, also now i put my minnie ears on him bc his headās the perfect size so im more or less using him as a hat rack which is very on brand for chuuya actually
the purple sloth staring into the camera (and your soul) is gasloth leroux and i won him at dave and busters after re-reading phantom of the opera
(last batch of non-rabbits)
the bear in the snazzy tunic is radar, he was originally my momās as a baby and she gave him to me as a baby and since i dont intend on spawning im hoarding him forever #life hackĀ
yall better know who fucking kermit isĀ
aannnd we already went overĀ ŃŠ»Š¾Š½ in the last picture so! back to the rabbits!
welcome to the purple corner, friends!
the little all purple one in the back is sukie, and she is just baby, only little creacher, nothing can change that, she was a gift for easter i think two years ago nowĀ
the purple and white rabbit with the pink nose laying next to the cardboard shapes is named violetĀ and her fur is very soft and lovely but she has some kind of hard panel inside (she moves, maybe? idk) so not exactly optimized for cuddling, still shes a good girl
the hulking googly eyed purple yarn monstrosity is roundy blumbo and he was handmade by my terrible but talented sister @rattypantsā
most of these are new arrivals because walgreens has easter rabbits out and some of them were literally only three dollars so yeah but anyway
the grey one with the pink bow is named toshi after all might (i got him about the same time as bun might so b/nha heavily owned my ass at the time) and hes absolutely perfect for cuddling, very soft and long
the blue one is named bluebell the second or ātwobellā, when I was younger I had a really tiny blue stuffed rabbit named bluebell that i would take everywhere but one day i dropped it somewhere in or around a ymca and lost it forever and i literally did not stop crying for two whole days because of it, bluebell the second is a spiritual successor who hopefully wont get lostĀ
the one that looks just like bluebell the second but not blue is marshmallow, bluebell the seconds identical twin brother who was also 3 dollars because literally, THREE DOLLARS
the one with light brown fur and orange ears is named gingersnap carrot cake because I liked both names and couldnt decide and since i bought him around the same time as bluebell the second and marshmallow, heās their mischievous older brother and together i guess that makes them the rabbit mcelroysĀ
now the round rabbit next to toshi with the floppy ears and a smaller rabbit with a green dress on its back is rose and bunnia, the larger one is rose, the mother, and bunnia is her daughter, they have a very close relationship as you can see
the small white and brown rabbit next to rose and bunnia is spenser,Ā named after edmund spenser, creator of the spenserian sonnet, bc i bought her at a renn faire and thought she should have an old timey name, shes a literary iconĀ
now weāre getting into the old guard! all the rabbits in this picture (aside from carrot cake gingersnap whomst is a SLUT FOR ATTENTION) are all ones i got between the ages of 6-10, so theyre my day ones uwu
the brown rabbit with floppy ears is mocha, she was a christmas present when i was 9 years old and shes probably the most rabbit-shaped rabbit i haveĀ
the rabbit with the bright pink scarf is beatrice (i dont have favorites except actually i do and its beatrice), I got her when i was 7 years old from goodwill and one of her arms was kind of loosely connected and started falling off which Horrified me and i tried toĀ ātake care of herā by using a bit of ribbon as a sling, eventually my grandma sewed her arm back on so then i used the ribbon as a scarf and ever since then beatrice has had a scarf of some kindĀ Ā
the rabbit next to beatrice with the black button eye is wrinkly pinkly, who lost her eye in the warTM (it fell off years later but she claims to have lost it in the war anyway and shes old so everyone just goes along with it), shes very loose and as the name implies, VERY wrinkly which makes her fun to wiggle aroundĀ
the bright pink rabbit with the wide head is anna, beatriceās mom and wrinkly pinklyās sister, her husband griffy is back home so i dont have a picture of him but their story is very enemies-to-lovers (they were on opposite sides of The War) and shes a very ambitious and powerful figure in rabbitopia despite having hundreds of kids to raise #feminist iconĀ
the light pink rabbit with the yarn dress is madison, ironically named long before i even remotely knew that madison, wisconsin was a place that exists, and shes beatriceās younger sister and shes very active and athletic but she also likes being pretty which is why i made her the yarn dress
cottontail (he doesnt actually have a tail)Ā is the town drunk and a constant nuisance, his wife left him so now heās always hoeing around and causing trouble for everyone (which is also what he did Before his wife left him), one of his legs is more filled than the other so he walks with a limp. his wife took most of the children except
darnell (the long pink rabbit lying down), who inherited her dadās troublemaking tendencies and loves playing pranks and talking shitĀ
(last one, for all the zero people who are still reading at this point)
next to cottontail we have aminta in the green dress, i bought her at the airport and shes a very beautiful and distinguished young rabbit who madison is ABSOLUTELY gay for, sheās very proper and is being brought up by
hera nova (the white rabbit with the pink nose and floppy ears in the back) who is the oldest rabbit i have (Ive had her since i was at least 5, though she didnāt get a name until i was in my greek mythology phase a few years later), shes sort of a grandma to all the other rabbits and could absolutely destroy them all if she wanted toĀ
karoline (yes with a k, i didnt know the kardashians were a Thing back then)Ā is the yellow rabbit with the basket, she works at rabbitopiaās most popular restaurant, the spinning carrot, and she is one of the three main chefs along with her sisterĀ
bonnie, the pink rabbit with only one ear, she got torn up pretty badly over the years but shes still alive and still spinning those carrots!! (there was a third rabbit that worked with them named fritz who was white and holding an easter egg but i donāt remember what happened to her)Ā
so there we go! rabbits! lots of them!Ā

Edens Zero Ch1-3 Easter Eggs and References! [SPOILERS!]
Below contains potential spoilers for the manga. Click at your own risk.
1) Happyās return: Not the same Happy we know from Fairy Tail, this version has a black tipped tail and aĀ collar with a cubedĀ pendant with a heart on it.
2) Shikiās name: While not a direct reference Mashima admits heās used the name before for the Protag of his Monster Hunter Orage manga. ShikiĀ (åå£)Ā means āfour seasonsā keeping in theme with his other protagonist being named after seasons.
3) Ether Gear: Ether has appeared in Mashimas previous series Fairy Tail and Rave. Fairy Tail had Ethernano which was basically theĀ āmagic particleā and āEtherious Demonsā. Rave and FT both haveĀ āEtherionā a powerful magic weapon. (which I have no doubt will return again as a weapon. Maybe attached to a spaceship?)
4) EN 0%: At the end of the chapter we are shown this (I wont spoil what its referring to within the chapter) but I can't help but notice if its meant to be a reference to the mangaās nameĀ āEden Zeroā or maybeĀ āE.N.D.ā from Fairy Tail or both? Probably just the manga name or maybe its just aĀ coincidence.
5)Ā Planet or Star? Exxid: The race Happy is apart of comes from the planet/star (Mashima seems to not know the difference between the two) Exxid. Exxid is a reference to the winged cat-like race from Fairy Tail Exceeds.
6)Ā Warren Rocko &Ā Max Alors: These two Fairy Tail members can be seen in the background.
7)Ā Elsie Crimson: Her last name Crimson is a shade of red which she shares with Erza Scarlet from Fairy Tail (who she also shares a design with). Also they both are missing an eye and are described as being armored.Ā
8) TeamĀ Shadow Gear: Levy, Jet and Droy from Fairy Tail can be seen in the background of the Adventurers Guild Shooting Starlight.
9) Plue: Debuting in Mashimas first ever work/one shot āMagician,ā Plue is an unusual dog type creature (Magician is also the origin for many designs we know from Rave and Fairy Tail). Plue got a bigger role in Mashimas first big series Rave asĀ bearer of the Rave Stone. Then made a cameo in Monster Soul. In Fairy Tail he wasĀ a Silver Key Celestial Spirit, "The Canis Minor". In Eden Zero he seems to again like FT have a smaller role then he did in Rave as a race of dog-like aliens called Nikola.
10)Ā Natsu, Lucy and Fairy Tail: Shiki questions why people in the guild werenāt as friendly as heād imagine to which Rebecca remarksĀ āThere was a manga like that beforeā referring to the Fairy Tail manga. As they say this you can see Natsu and Lucy walking together in the background.
11)Ā Griffon Kato: In the panel just below the previous one you can spot Griff from Rave. He made a lot of cameos in Fairy Tail as well.
Thatās all I could fined within the first 3 chapters! If anyone else finds anything else let me know!!

The Rules Of Texting (Explained By Guys)
A special thank you to Brittany and Kristi for the article inspiration, Anna for panel recruitment and research assistance, and to the panel of experts for contributing.
As single millennials, the Should I text him first? inevitably pops up in my friend group chats from time to time, followed by thorough deliberation. This time, I went straight to the source for the answers to what, if anything, is appealing about the chase when it comes to texting, what the game is about, and how to play. Five guys, ages 20 30, opened up about what goes through their minds before they hit send.
Our panel of eligible male millennials: (Names have been changed.) David, 20 Braden, 20 Cameron, 23 Ben, 27 Nate, 30
1. Are there rules to texting?
Lets cut to the chase pun intended. Four out of five of the guys said yes, there are rules to texting. According to Cameron, 23, the golden rules are to mind your grammar and abide by three strikes youre out if hes not responding: Always use complete sentences and never send more than three unanswered texts.
Nate, 30, says the golden rule is No emojis if you are over the age of 16.
Ben, 27, thinks it goes beyond whether or not you send those monkey emojis: I definitely think there are unwritten rules to texting. A lot of these rules are generated by society and pop culture, and dictate how we converse with one another. I think these rules are also reflective of the relationship you have with someone. The frequency and type of text definitely differs between friends, work associates, girlfriends/boyfriends, best friends, crushes, siblings, parents, etc.
Ultimately, I think there is a general set of baseline rules that most people follow like being polite, funny, respectful and then the rest just falls into personal expectations.
2. What is appealing about someone being hard to get?
There was a clear divide here. Two out of three of the 20 23 year olds said there is nothing appealing about someone being hard to get. David, 20, clarifies, It makes them seem conceited and uninterested. Nate, 30, weighs in with the younger crowd on this one, stating that nothing is appealing about a girl who is hard to get. He advocates the straight to the point approach: I am always one who is aggressive and goes after what I want. You know pretty quickly if someone is into you or if you are into them. Whether its via text, at a bar or Steak n Shake, hard to get is a thing of the past. I have noticed over past 3-4 years even females have been more aggressive in pursuit.
On the other side, Braden, 20, says, It makes them seem desirable; if lots of people want someone, then that person probably has something good about them.
Ben, 27, sheds more light on the appeal: [Its] the old adage of nothing easy is worthwhile. I think everyone can agree that the more time and effort you put into someone, the more interested you are. But being hard to get is definitely a game and
I think it totally depends on the type of person you are. Each individual has a different threshold of hard to get that they are willing to tolerate. When youre texting someone that you like and they are hard to get, its nauseating, exciting, and thrilling, waiting for someone to respond the fact that its new and unknown is exciting. The anticipation and re-reading of texts can drive you mad but its that pain and agony that makes it so much better when they respond.
3. How often is too often for a girl to text just to say hey?
According to Braden, 20, more than once a day is too often, while Cameron, 23, says texting just to say hey is always fine. Nate, 30, agrees that the text conversation should be open-ended to keep the conversation flowing.
Ben, 27, wants a more creative conversation starter. If you are actively pursuing someone, you better come up with something better than hey or you will lose their interest, he cautions. But dont underestimate the guys ability to play hard to get: However, if I know someone is interested in me, and maybe Im playing hard to get, just saying hey after a lull in conversation can let them know that Im still interested, but still give me the control.
4. Is it a turnoff if a girl is always the one to text you first?
We have a consensus here everyone answered no. Nate, 30, explains, Its 2016; Chivalry isnt dead, but her texting first is kind of a turn-on, actually. It shows interest. Ben agrees, adding that, It shows that she knows what she wants. If Im not interested, its not a turn-off, but it does become annoying if they continually
text you first when you dont show interest.
5. Are there weekend texts and weekday texts?
No surprises here Weekday texts are more conversational, and are meant to serve as distractions while at work. They are also sober texts (usually). Weekend texts tend to get more flirtatious, and the senders are more likely to have a drink in the other hand (you dont say).
Ben, 27, cautions the tipsy texters: Once you start drinking, you start texting less with your brain and more with your emotions, which can lead to a disaster the drunker that you get.
When asked the difference between a weekday text and a weekend text, Nate, 30, says that there isnt one unless it is after midnight and the bars are closing. I feel compelled here to remind everyone of the Jersey Shore wisdom of Nothing good happens after 2:00 A.M. (unless youre at Steak n Shake and Nate will be there with chivalry and cheese fries).
6. Is there a reason or strategy behind your texting habits?
Maybe the bad texter isnt always a myth. Some guys generally dont like texting as a whole. David, 20, dislikes communicating through texts because of the inability to convey emotions properly through words. Nate, 30, would also opt out: I am more of a phone caller, [it] shows more intimacy.
Unfortunately, the fear that the guys inbox is full of conversations with other girls may be a valid concern. That is, at least, if youre talking to Braden, 20: I treat it like a game where I try to talk to as many people as possible at the same time.
Ben, 27, is our breath of fresh air. Im not one for games, he says, and the older I get, the less and less I play them. But I do think it is important to not come off as desperate or clingy when first meeting someone, because you dont want to spook them. When can you expect a non-strategized text from him? After 2 3 dates, I usually stop worrying about the time or frequency of my texts as strategic, because I feel that I have a read on them and whether or not we like each other.
7. What is your favorite text to get from a girl?
Ill let the guys speak for themselves here.
David: I dislike all texts equally.
Braden: hey (:
Nate: pizza and hockey game?
Ben: I think that depends on the girl; for example, I loved getting hey there stranger from my first serious girlfriend who I took to prom. The words didnt necessarily mean anything, but between us it was an inside joke or something we always said to each other. So I think the best/favorite text to get from a girl is where they reference an inside joke; it shows they care without actually saying the words, and its unique to your relationship.
Cameron: Anything that means they were thinking of me (e.g. miss you/ something reminded them of me) and compliments.
8. When was the last time you ghosted a girl and why?
For questioning readers, Ill save you the Google search: Ghosting is when someone youre dating or talking to or seeing (#Dating in 2016 problems) ends the relationship by ending all communication without explanation or warning.
Interestingly, the 20 23 year olds werent as familiar with the term. David, however, appears well-versed in it. When asked when the last time he ghosted a girl was, he replied, This week, I didnāt want to talk to her. Fair enough.
However, sometimes ghosting is the simple solution to an online dating match gone bad. Ben, 27, last ghosted a girl after a first [Tinder] date. She had a lot of baggage, he explains, and brought up that she recently broke up with a boyfriend she had been dating for several years She was not ready to date and that was what I was looking for.
Nate last ghosted a girl last year: She said she was a Cubs fan.
9. Have you ever waited a day or longer to respond to a text? If yes, why?
Most of the panelists said yes, by accident or yes, to not come off as eager. Nate, however, knows better than to wait too long to reply to your text: You wont find yourself anywhere but the doghouse if you dont text back within a few hours.
The takeaway? To summarize the findings, here is the most important graph. Send the text. Keep it thoughtful If you were thinking about him, let him know. Mind your autocorrect, dont spam him, and be your witty self even if that calls for emojis (personal opinion). Happy texting.
