11/12/23.
It's finally here - the aptly named "The Comeback Kid" represents Marnie Stern's first album in 10 years. Since "The Chronicles of Marnia", Stern has been working as part of Seth Meyers' band, the 8G Band.
Stern (New York, New York) really is in a category all her own. There aren't any people (that I'm aware of) whose guitar work sounds like hers. But the overall vibe of the music does recall bands like Deerhoof, Tamar Aphek or Yonatan Gat.
Joyful Noise Recordings was lucky enough to land Stern for this release.

It's time for Beginnings, the podcast where writer and performer Andy Beckerman talks to the comedians, writers, filmmakers and musicians he admires about their earliest creative experiences and the numerous ways in which a creative life can unfold.

On today's episode, I talk to musician Marnie Stern. Originally from New York City, Marnie didn't start out trying to pursue music professionally, and her first album In Advance of the Broken Arm came out in 2007 on Kill Rock Stars when she was 30-years-old. It instantly garnered acclaim, and was followed by This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That in 2008, a self-titled album two years later and The Chronicles of Marnia in 2013. The previous year, she made Spin Magazine's list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time", and after Seth Meyers took over Late Night, Marnie eventually joined the 8G Band for a number of years. Most recently, Marnie has recorded her first album in ten years; The Comeback Kid is out now on Joyful Noise, and it's fantastic!

Hermits and body modifications
Grian has a two inch thick ring of tattoos on the upper part of his right arm filled with a ton of small symbols of important parts of his life, the largest symbol is a large watcher logo surrounded by a black circle, the life series hearts are in the center of the band and is the second largest symbol. Grian also has a normal and upper lobe piercing on both ears and an orbital piercing in his left ear. There is some intentional scarification in the shape of a sun on the right side of his neck. (In AU's where Grian is human he has a large tattoo spanning the majority of his upper back depicting a large pair of parrot wings.
Bdubs has three tattoos- the first is a large sun (like the one in Tangled) at the base of his neck, another is the life series hearts vertically placed from the space below his shoulder down to just above his elbow on his left arm, the last is two thin bands around his right wrist. He has a lobe piercing in his right ear and an industrial piercing in his left.
Cub has a tattoo on his back of a pair of vex wings as well as an old upper lip piercing that he doesn't use so its beginning to close up.
Doc has five piercings on his right ear and three on his left (my man has goat ears) his horns have large swirls carved into them and also he has a snake bite piercing and a tongue piercing. His tattoos include a goats head (the one on his perimeter flag) on his upper left arm and a small butterfly on the inside of his wrist.
Etho has a lower lip piercing and an 8g ear gauge in both ears. He has a small tattoo of a pirate ship on the inner side of his right wrist with the word 'relation' below it.
False has the normal lobe piercings on both ears as well as industrial piercings, she has a tattoo of a sword and shield on the right side of her abdomen.
Gem has three helix piercings on her right ear and two on her left, she has a tattoo of a pair of deer antlers on her upper back. Her life series tattoos are placed vertically along the outer side of her right leg.
Scar has a normal lobe and a helic piercing on his left ear. He has a large tattoo of the hotguy symbol across his chest and a tattoo of the life series hearts horizontally placed in a half ring on his left arm. Also he has some intentional scarification in the symbol of a book and quill with a single heart above it on his right wrist.
Impulse has a gauge 6 ear piercing in both ears and an industrial in just his right. Both of his horns have a black ring tattoo around the middle of it. His life series hearts are placed in a V shape on his upper back.
Joel has three helix piercings on his right ear and two on his left as wells as a normal lobe on both. His life series tattoos are on the inside of his left arm placed horizontally from a few inches from the inside of his elbow down to his wrist. He also has a small tattoo of a ship of his right wrist with the word 'Relation' below it. On his upper right arm is a small tattoo of an axolotl with a crown floating above it. Other than that he has a sleeve on his right arm surrounding the major designs with intricate swirls and flower designs.

Another original design, The Etosha-Nydam K/F-5G Kingfisher.
Nimble, hard-hitting, and with a thrust-to-weight ratio that puts other craft in it's class to shame, the Etosha-Nydam K/F-8G Kingfisher is a common sight among mercenary groups, independent militaries, and pirate bands alike. Originally envisioned as a planetary defense fighter, the Kingfisher rose to prominence with the introduction of the carrier-based K/F-8G variant. A narrower profile, lighter power plant, and reduced maintenance requirements took a plodding (if well-regarded) fighter-bomber and reimagined it as the ideal choice in the limited conditions of a shipboard hangar. Thanks to their loosely tuned stability and explosive acceleration capabilities, Kingfishers have earned a reputation as temperamental hot rods. Individual craft are often plagued with "personality quirks," and no two Kingfishers are said to fly alike. Kingfisher pilots take pride in this fact, claiming their ability to overcome the unpredictability of the craft is evidence of their superior skill.

Marnie Stern — The Comeback Kid (Joyful Noise)
Tumblr media
A decade ago, when we last had a Marnie Stern album to consider, she was a beacon of instrumental prowess in a world of “Women who rock” features that largely confined themselves to singers. She was a shredder then and a shredder now, and dare we hope, the world has shifted so that this is no longer so remarkable? In any case, her latest album, The Comeback Kid, is full of shimmering, ultra fanciful castles of guitar-based sound, but it’s also kind of an experimental pop gem, like Deerhoof after a month of Guitar Hero or like OOIOO any time, really.
Stern has spent the last 10 years in ways both unsurprising (she had two kids now) and mildly unusual (she plays guitar on in Late Night’s 8G band). As a result, she sounds both refreshed from the hiatus and in sharp form from the practice. This is, of course, a contradiction, but makes sense when you think about it. Playing other people’s music five nights a week is very different from making your own songs and touring them.
In any case, she is audibly raring to go, in “Believing is Seeing.” She builds a song right in front of us, asking “What if I add this? And then?” and then adding it, big crashing power chords, antic dances of off kilter picking, handclaps, sugar-rush, girl-group shouts and refrains. “Don’t bow down,” she confides before launching the wholly, gloriously excessive “Working Memory” and then DOESN’T BOW DOWN. Instead she launches a Cecil B. DeMille production of an art punk song, with trebly choirs and neck warping firestorms of electric guitar wizardry. It’s the grand finale of all grand finales, but hold on, the album’s not even half over yet.
You’ve still got the stop-start giddy assault of “Earth Eater,” for instance, showcasing rapid-fire bursts of percussion and, again, guitar, as well as fizzy, popping, girl sung choruses that have something very Japanese about them. It’s here that I’m going to pull the Wendy Eisenberg card just because I can think of no other female artist with comparable chops and experimental pop tendencies, but Stern is pure pleasure where Eisenberg can sometimes seem a puzzle maker. You can turn it all off and enjoy The Comeback Kid—or listen in and enjoy the details. (Like that Van Halen solo right at the end of “Earth Eater.”)
Celebrate the comeback, sure, but it sounds like a big bang beginning.

What's up, y'all? This is Tucker, and it is, in fact, Tucker Thursday. Last week on the tour of The Rip Room, there were a few things on the wall that y'all were wondering about, and I'm going to explain them to you. These are my cue cards from when I played with the 8G Band on Late Night With Seth Meyers, and they say, "Welcome back, 8G Band! All this week we've had the fantastic drummer for the band Thursday, who are currently in the middle of their sold out 20th anniversary tour. His Brooklyn based band Ageist has a brand new record, "Babyface", out on February 8th, and be sure to follow him on Instagram. Tucker Rule, everybody! Thanks for a great week, Tucker." So, yeah, that's it. I'm really proud of those, so... Yeah, there, you have it. Have a great weekend. Have a great... Hope you had a great week!

11/26/22.
I see that Kill Rock Stars is doing a 2 LP reissue of Marnie Stern's self-titled 2010 album. Years ago, I bought and have enjoyed "The Chronicles of Marnia". Unfortunately, we haven't seen a new release since.
Stern's music is complex, and challenging, while somehow retaining a semblance of "catchiness". In this way, she is no different than Yonatan Gat, or Tamar Aphek. Stern's vocals recall the work of Deerhoof. And sometimes this can sound like Apprentice Destroyer with lyrics.
But really, she's in a league all her own. Her frequent collaborator, Zach Hill (Sacramento/Death Grips) is a significant addition via percussion.
Stern (New York) is currently a member of the 8G Band...Seth Meyer's house band featuring Fred Armisen.
