ELLIOT’S 2022 FIC WRAP-UP

i have read so many fics in 2022 i wanted to make a little (it’s not that little) fic rec list of my favourites of the year because all these deserve so much love!!

to start off, some fun facts (you can just skip these of course, i just think they’re interesting and i like numbers): 

i have a spreadsheet that kind of functions as my fic library (i am totally normal about fics why are you asking), so i know that this year i have read approximately 6,248k words in 425 fics across 16 fandoms

the month i read the most words in is JULY with 1,384k words across 62 fics. i don’t know how i did it. shockingly, it’s followed by DECEMBER with 860k words in 79 fics, which..... that was the most stressful month of my life, HOW did i have the time to read all those fics. it’s some sort of coping mechanism i guess

my top 5 fandoms are very funny to me for various reasons:

at first place, we have STRANGER THINGS with 119 fics. listen. i knew i read a lot of st fics this year... but 119?? making it my top fandom??????? sounds fake

i am delighted to report that i managed to get YOUNG ROYALS to the second spot with 107 fics considering that i only started reading for this fandom in late october. that’s what mixing the release of an excellent new season with a very stressful exam period does to a person

sigh... i was expecting this one to be in first place, but alas, it’s only 103 fics for SUPERNATURAL this year... it’s very much possible that i read more spn fic in terms of words, but calculating that would have taken too much time

then we have BLACK SAILS with 31 fics. not really any surprises here tbh, this is the only one where i was like yeah. this fandom is where it’s supposed to be (it is however very funny how much i jumped in terms of numbers between bs and spn)

and spot number 5 with 17 fics goes to... BRIDGERTON????????? it’s not so much the number that surprises me, it’s more the fact that of the remaining fandoms, it’s bridgerton that’s managed to get into the top 5. like what is up with that. i though either 911 (14 fics) or a:tla (9 fics) would be up here, but bridgerton??? nah

it’s a choose your own adventure fic! and it’s so fun! and so well executed on the writer’s part (much respect for that, it seems very complicated). this one is very fluffy and you can only get good endings, but the author has another one that’s a bit more risky (i killed both jaskier and geralt when i read that one for the first time). it’s really cool to run through it again and choose different paths to see what else can happen

a supernatural summer camp fic!!! and it is such a joy to read!!! i love how the plot fits in so well and how dean and cas’ relationship develops and how all the kids play a small role and can shine through. the whole atmosphere made me think of summer and i remember taking breaks from watching lectures to read a chapter and it transported my into a wonderful world for a while

a modern au that is quite honestly my favourite bridgerton fic ever. the series has 4 installments in total, two of which are massive group chat fics that i am a little in love with. like there is so much happening and it’s all over text and the characters still sound so much like themselves and... and aaaallll the sibling shenanigans <3 like i once said i mainly watch bridgerton because of the sibling dynamics and oh boy there be so many sibling dynamics stuffed into this one. this is also the fic that had me realise that i am in fact invested in kathony which. okay i can accept that. HOWEVER my favourite part of the series is the one centering on benedict and henry (i am nothing if not predictable) because while their relationship is not the endgame of the series it is still handled with so much care and love and i genuinely cannot get enough of them in this verse

Transfer sagas rumble on

It wouldn't be a transfer window if United weren't linked to everyone and their nan, but in what has been a sensible window rumour-wise (by our standards at least) we're now seeing the Old United come through.

Sofian Amrabat is the man who wants United and United fans want that man. He would bring order, composure, and dependability to the heart of midfield at a time when Casemiro is unfit, Bruno is naturally a 10, and Mount is adapting to the system.

There's also talk of a swap loan between Ryan Gravenberch and Scott McTominay with Bayern Munich - a surprise, but not an awful trade for either side based on needs/variety if we're honest. Just weird how we wouldn't accept £30m from West Ham for McTominay so we could just go and get Amrabat...

This problem of CM has fallen to the wayside though, with Left Back now the big issue. Vague muscle injuries to both Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw mean that United are down to Dalot and Fernandez (Williams out on loan) at LB. Not great. Loan rumours link us to Cucurella at Chelsea, Reguilon at Spurs, and Marcos Alonso at Barca, but even free agent Ryan Bertrand - age 34. Hmmmm.

Beyond this there are rumours of United taking on another (cheap) goalkeeper with Henderson now sold to Crystal Palace and maybe a CB (pending Maguire's sale) but all points raise the question: where are United's funds?

£164 million has been spent on Højlund, Onana and Mount, with a surprise free deal for Jonny Evans. That's a good sum for a window. The rumoured budget though was £120m but then that was quashed and a new figure of £160m was touted, with sale funds on top if we get them. Henderson sold for £20m, Fred for £8.36m, Kovar for £4.29m, Telles for £3.95m, £860k for Iqbal, and De Gea, Tuanzebe and Jones off the wage bill. £35 million ish made back there on fees alone, let alone wages saved.

Ultimately the club is professional enough to hide the true figures and plans behind the scenes, but given how swiftly we wrapped up our main three transfers it feels less comfortable at present knowing we need a CM, the ideal one wants us, he's cheap, and we're not just going and wrapping up the deal. Still plenty to overhaul at United, and it all stems back to the ownership.

This is wild to me because never once in all the years I've been reading on AO3 have I ever looked at the kudos/hits ratio. It's never occurred to me that different people have wildly different fic-discovery methods.

I tend to search by a specific pairing or tag or fandom, then filter out things I definitely don't want (could be relationships, fandoms, tags, etc, not just warnings). Sometimes I'm in the mood for a specific length of story and I'll filter by length, but typically I don't.

If it's my first time searching this pairing/tag/fandom I tend to sort by bookmarks (because I want to find fics people liked enough to read again, not just fics they liked in the moment). If I've searched that pairing/tag/fandom before, I search by last updated or add a filter for stories updated within the last year or two. I have a few tags favorited, and I go through and check for anything new about that often.

Then I go through and download everything that catches my fancy, whether that's via additional tags or summary. Depending on how many pages of links there are, I tend to keep going until I'm halfway through or 10-20 pages of links. Sometimes I'll then filter out all the more popular fandoms and do another pass (sometimes more than once) so I catch the good stuff from smaller fandoms. I put downloaded files in my e-reader app's "new" bookshelf, and then as I read them I rate them 1-5 stars and move them to the applicable bookshelf. I try to give a kudo to anything I download, and go back and leave comments on (and sometimes bookmark) anything I rated 4 or 5 stars.

Some of the tags I search out are niche and/or very weird, so their ratios of hits/kudos are quite off. I took a glance through my bookmarks just now, and while I do have many stories bookmarked that have better than 10:1 ratios, the majority have between 10:1 and 20:1, with more than 20:1 being not uncommon. I think my biggest ratio has ~860k hits and ~17k kudos, which is greater than 50:1.

So the tl;dr is I just kinda go for it but I have A System, which is apparently completely different than other people's!

Another AO3 thing I’m curious about, how do yall decide if something is good enough to read? Usually I follow a rule of 1 kudos for every 10 hits. One because it’s easy math and two it’s yet to fail me. Thoughts? Do you just go for it and pray it’s good?

These guys are having way to much fun. BTW I refuse to call the Sq. by any other name except Yonge/Dundas Sq. Sankofa is from the language of the Akan people of Ghana. They were one of the major human traffickers who sold fellow Africans into slavery. Henry Dundas may have been controversial but I think a better name choice could have been selected. Renaming the Square has cost Toronto taxpayers $860K which could have been better spent in using such names and statues to educate the public about slavery. After all, those who ignore history are bound to repeat it. Putting a bandage solution on it doesn't correct the past or the present.
