My first post
Hey y'all! If anyone knows me it's beacuse I'm u/SeeTheSeaInUDP on reddit or 8090s.k_goldenoldies on instagram lmaooo. I have a naver blog too, as well as pinterest.
I'm originally an 1st gen kpop stan, but we've graduated to 90s, then 80s, and now I'm headlong into 70s. SAVE ME.
I wanted a platform where I can thoughts dump but don't have to be coherent like in reddit. Maybe I'll repost stuff from any of my other social platforms (I have so many, I should open a linktree lmfaooo)
Anyways yall I like it here for now

I scoured a bunch of naver blogs, and found some new photos of Lee Ji Yeon - as the cover (+story)of "대중가요/Popular Music" for the release of her second album in 1989. The pictures aren't mine but a naver blogs.
BTW here's (probably) her first Daejunggayo cover, probably in 1988:

Its getting kinda embarrassing at this point tbh. Like yes we get it - she "ran away" when she was 20, she has not much luck with men, she lives in America now. That's... kinda normal for women and celebs from her generation? Choi Soo Ji also became a side piece for a short time. Lee Sang Ah and Kim Hye Sun married and re-married three times and are still single mothers. At least Lee Ji Yeon stuck with one guy and wasn't even married to him (just engaged?) but people acting like she is gambling her life away smh
Shes living a life she would have never gotten in Korea and evethough I'll forever be sad she didn't release more music, it would probably be for the best to have another job. And she's succeeding in hers! So what's peoples problem? I don't get it at all.

Lee Yeon-kyung - I Won't Love (1991), English Translation
I don't know about anything What I am even hoping for 슬픈 표정 짓지말아 Don't put on a sad expression I am also really tired of it right now 매일 만난 사람처럼 Like a person I'd meet everyday You appear so easily, even today And tell me to smile Now I can't trust you anymore You leave my side without even a word And when we're apart, you cry that you're lonely From now on, I won't love you anymore From now on, I won't love anyone You just forget me on the bright and sunny days And come to me only when the rain falls From now on, I won't love you anymore From now on, I won't love anyone anymore

Lee Yeon-kyung - I Won't Love (1991)
Exams are over AAAND I have a new obsession!
Lee Yeon-kyung, born Lee Ji-yeon in 1972, is a singer and an actress. She played the role of "Geum-ok" in the hit film "Sunny" in 2007, and was a mainstay on children's entertainment programs in the late 90s. Having debuted through the College Music Festival representing Suwon University, she slowly worked her way into the music industry with her fresh and cute voice that resembled her seniors Jo Kap-kyung, Kang Su-ji and the original innocent icon, Lee Ji-yeon. At the time of Lee Yeon-kyung's debut on the College Music Fest, Lee Ji-yeon was so popular that when Lee Yeon-kyung introduced herself as "Lee Ji-yeon", the announcer for the College Music Fest said "oh, so will you sing 'Wind, Please Stop Blowing' for us?".
Her voice caught the attention of hit singer-songwriter Kim Sung-ho, who had written for several debuting female artists, and he gave her the airy and dreamy ballad, "Love Flying On A Paper Plane" in 1992.
As Ha Soo-bin became the new popular "innocent face", and Seo Tai-ji and Boys debuted the next year and the popular music scene changed a lot from dance pop music to hip-hop and western music, soloists in the style of Lee Yeon-kyung found it hard to adapt to the new, modern trends. She found a new job in a children's entertianment program, where she also met her future husband, the PD of the said children's programme.
She has then since been active as an actress.

Hi 👋🏻 @anemoiawithatouchofobsession I've recently been getting into the 80s and 90s K-pop songs and kdramas, but I don't know where to start. Do you have any recommendations on where I should start?
I love your posts, by the way. Keep going 😊🫰🏼
BESTIEEEEEEE LUV YA FOR THISSS
Sooo I'll try and keep it general. I got into the 80s and 90s through 1st gen Kpop (whoch is late 90s - 2000s kpop) and working my way backwards- but that might not work for everyone.
I would say, let YouTube do your thing. There are a lot of compilations and playlists, some are specific, some are general.
You will have to search in Korean because 99% of the content on 80-90s Kpop is in Korean, like so :
"80년대" if you want the 80s, "90년대" if you want the 90s or "8090년대" for both.
If you're specific, you can add "남자" for specifically songs by male artists, or "여자" for female artists.
Then your genre (Ballad : 발라드/Rock : 락/Dance : 댄스/Folk : 포크/Trot : 트로트)
Then you want to search for a compilation so you can add "노래모음". Literally means song compilation. Then you'll get a few compilation videos, and you can listen to it. Pick out songs and artists which you like, and slowly start building your own playlist and taste!
For example : 80년대 댄스곡 노래모음 gives you this result page. I personally love love THIS compilation of stages - also helps you to get into the artists and their performances and all.
If you just want to dive right in randomly, you can just hit random and search "8090년대 명곡 베스트" (8090s hit songs best") and let a bunch of compilation vidss take you wherever. Or there are compilation albums on YT and YT music that are supposed to have the "Best Of". Albums such as "7080 명동연가" or "7080 회상" are a good starting point,
And then, literally - just let the algorithm take over. When you're on spotify, click on the "realted artists" section or on YouTube Music look in the "related" tab...
You might have to have a translator at hand or learn how to read Hangul. Or you can ask me! Hehe.
For dramas... this is a bit harder since you need subtitles and allat. I would literally just go on MyDramaList and search for certain actors, scroll to their dramas section and just pick one that has a streaming source linked. YouTube has a lot, and SBS-KBS-MBC are currently re-uploading and re-broadcasting a lot of their older dramas. KBS's oldschool channel is here, MBC's is here and SBS's is this one
If you want recommendations, I'm good for early-to-mid 90s dramas and it seems like @seulpeunballad knows a bit about late 90s dramas. MDL is your best bet though. A lot of 90s fans there.
My MDL profile is also slowly starting to build some "Best Of" lists for notable 80s-90s talents, so here you go too!

Excitement
I'm participating in a korean language speaking contest and I want to talk about 1st gen Kpop, 80s and 90s korean popular culture and how its inspiring me and influencing my music taste, fashion, makeup, mindset, and the respect for people of all ages and why I think the Korean 80s and 90s trends are unique in Asia
AND ITS SUPPOSED TO BE LESS THAN THREE MINUTES AND I HAVE TO SUBMIT IT ON SUNDAYYY
So here is what it boils down to, eventually :
Introducing myself with Lee Jiyeon's "That Reason Was Pain To Me", just to start off with something more eye-catching and unique than the standard "Annyeonghaseyo"
Introduce my background shortly
Explaining how I heard of older Kpop and why it is different from the current global Kpop trend
How I went back in history and kept checking out odler artists due to my interest and curiosity
Parallelly, getting interested in 90s K-dramas through MBCs Masterpiece Theatre on YouTube
Finding my niche in the 8090s and fully exploring artists and albums, actors and their dramas, variety shows, and loving it
Explaining my favourite theme of the 8090s, "Longing" through two to three examples in songs/music and drama/movies
Song examples : "I am loneliness, you are longing", "Wind, please stop blowing", "Rain outside the glass window", "Past days", "when the wind blows outside the window"
Drama examples : Lee Mi Yeon in Love Blooming on a tree, Taesoo and Hyerin in Sandglass, Kim Hyesun in Walking To Heaven, Hoonam and Seokho in Sons And Daughters, Choi Soojong in Pilot, Chae Shira and Choi Jaesung in Eyes Of Dawn
Explaining how I relate to Longing and Sentimentalism in my current life
How I am influenced in my current life by the 8090s in dressing style and makeup style
Some other special 8090s korean fashion trends I love : dark lipstick, jeans and leather jackets, wispy feather bangs
Explaining why this era is special to Korean popular culture, because of all time rating highs in drama, new musical genres and perfection in existing genres, a society ready for change and development, yet humanist and a 낭만적
This is a special part of Korean culture I love, and I cannot wait to come to Korea and see parts of the culture that is left over for myself
End the submission with "가리워진 길" because why not
