7 reasons why Bokuto and Akaashi's relationship is precious

Last time we saw how much there was behind the friendship of our most favorite freak duo, as we presented 10 reasons why their relationship is underrated. But they are not the only characters who share such a precious friendship that is mostly only seen in one light.

In today’s blogpost we will see another relationship that may be popular but underrated as well for its reasons.

Here are 7 reasons why Bokuto and Akaashi’ relationship is so precious, and what makes the Senpai-Kohai duo so different from others.

Disclaimer: please be aware that this post contains spoilers up to the end of season 4 so please proceed at your own risk.

With all of your weaknesses

Weakness is something most people fear to reveal to one another. Even to family or friends weaknesses seem like something intended to hide, far away from people’s eyes.

Yet we have Bokuto, a man full of obvious flaws that even the opponent must know by heart if they ever confronted the Ace on the court. And while most of the people would get fed up by having to bear with those weaknesses and behaviors of his, having a much harder time to keep up we have the younger Akaashi who knows every weakness by heart.

It’s one thing to know someone’s weakness, but it’s another thing to know how it is triggered and how you can counter it which earned Akaashi the respect of coach Nekomata in doing so.

Handling Bokuto is not only Akaashi’s task but all of Fukurodani deals with a little bit of Bokuto’s ups and downs, still most of the time it ends up with the former finding a solution for the arising problems.

Still, we see Akaashi accepting Bokuto as he is, handling it with no further complaints and taking Bokuto with all his strengths and weaknesses, embracing them all and making the best of it at the end of the day.

From making several options on how a situation could end up and choosing the best of it, we see that Akaashi always takes into account how Bokuto might feel about certain accounts and how important it is to take proper care of someone whose flaws might impact the bigger picture.

So what might look to others like a small thing to turn a blind eye to, is added to Akaashi’s list of Bokuto’s weaknesses to make sure that not only their team wins, but that his Senpai is always in top form and as healthy as possible. In Haikyuu-bu! Chapter 01 we see several occasions where Akaashi even is able to predict Bokuto’s behavior and has a notebook in which he writes down events that may occur and how to prepare for them.

Which means whether as a team-mater or underclassman Akaashi is always prepared to protect and care for Bokuto instead of avoiding or making fun of his weaknesses.

Age doesn’t matter

With a difference of at least a year Akaashi is the younger one in this relationship, making him Bokuto’s Kohai in school.

Usually most Senpai-Kohai dynamics feature a reliable senpai who is there for the Kohai, but we see that this dynamic actually works the other way around.

Not that Bokuto is completely unreliable, which we will see later in the post, but most of the time he is a walking wildcard with a much higher risk than chance at that.

But their dynamic shows us that age doesn’t matter in a friendship, moreover Bokuto relies a lot on Akaashi and we see him turn to him seeking advice, help or validation when he hits rock-bottom. Not only does Bokuto cherish those around him a lot due to him stating he wanted to play longer with his team if he could in season 4 episode 25, it also shows his little mature side from time to time and that he actually will leave sooner than the rest of the team who are not third-years.

Bokuto never thinks of Akaashi being a disrespectful Kohai who should respect his Senpai in every situation, but we see that he sees Akaashi as someone equal to him if not he even respects him the same way Akaashi respects Bokuto. Even when Akaashi calls Bokuto out in front of others for his bad habits or misbehavior it’s rather that Bokuto doesn’t like to be scolded in front of people like Kuroo or his disciple Hinata as we see that Akaashi is able to scold him just as the third-years would do.

Since in Japan it’s more common to be polite towards people who are older than oneself we can see that Akaashi still uses san as a suffix but their conversations are still very laid-back as one may expect under usual circumstances.

A friendship not based on a hierarchy, but seeing each other as proper equal despite their difference in age makes this relationship even more special.

Reliable other

As we mentioned the word reliable earlier on the first thought that may come up is obviously Akaashi is the more reliable one out of the two. This thought stems from occurences in the series in which we often see that Akaashi cleans the mess of Bokuto who ever not so often gets into his so-called Emo-mode.

But as we saw in the Bokuto Character Talk post, Bokuto is pretty reliable in many different ways as well, if you want to get the in-depth analysis about that check the blogpost out.

One of the reasons Akaashi relies on Bokuto is his love for showing off and fun for Volleyball, therefore he knows that despite his little tantrums or bad moods he displays, Bokuto will in the end succeed when he gets back on track.

The ball that will be spiked, the way that must be paved, Bokuto nonetheless of his many moments of being distressed shows the qualities of an amazing ace who sooner or later leads his team to victory.

Yet we have Akaashi who is not only relied on by his team, but as well the coach and the managers to solve any problem in their way. Therefore it is seen that many of his team mates ask him for advice before going to action with a plan especially considering Bokuto. The latter is seen to always turn around to Akaashi finding a pillar or safety when he is in his Emo-mode and always calls for him first.

Whether Bokuto himself is aware of that or not is a mystery, but it makes it even more visible how much he relies on his Setter.

Shining star

We know that Bokuto often steals the spotlight, whether as the Captain, the ace or when he is behaving utterly unpredictable in the most crucial situations.

Paving the way in a tight situation or being the most energetic when the times look dark shows how much of a motivational source he can be, which might look irritating to Akaashi at first sight but is also one of the traits in Bokuto he cherishes, as we see him giving the one or other little side smile secretly.

But not only Bokuto is the shining Star of this relationship, Akaashi on the other hand knows how to motivate Bokuto as well and create chances for the Ace that might have been missed with Bokuto’s simplistic way of thinking. Not ever so often does Akaashi save the day with one of his plans and proactive way of thinking which earned him the label of a little hero within the team and maybe even in Bokuto’s eyes.

Twisted trust

Trust is a little bit more complex as it may seem, we saw already that despite the Miya twins' bond that may be very strong still urges Osamu to question if he really does trust his other half.

Yet with Akaashi and Bokuto there is also the little twist in trust, that may feel like they trust each other dearly while they each have their own doubts about the other.

In Akaashi's case he in a way trusts Bokuto to not disappoint him when it comes to his extreme sudden change in behavior, keeping Akaashi always on his toes but also makes him suspicious when Bokuto is perfectly fine - deviating from Akaashi's calculations. Still despite all of his efforts Akaashi knows that if the conditions are met Bokuto will give his best in the end and trusts in the simplistic side of Bokuto that does things straightforward.

On the other hand Bokuto knows that when he is in a pinch Akaashi is there, and even if he is not there visibly he trusts him to aid him in the end. Despite his looks Bokuto showed in season 4 while watching the Inarizaki vs Karasuno game that he is self-aware and perfectly knowing of his bad habits and slip-ups. Which would mean he can allow himself to do that because he knows he has someone as caring, considerate and calculating as Akaashi backing him up.

Yet Bokuto knows that if he messes up he can get scolded or even ignored when acting up which leads him to silently retreat at times but a little bit more cautious, he trusts that Akaashi will sooner or later catch up with what he did and therefore uses that knowledge to play around.

While their trust has a playful twist that can be used to manipulate how the other may proceed it is built on a foundation of knowing each other's traits and habits, as Akaashi is more on the logical side of things and Bokuto more on the feeling side that the other will make up for the thing their partner lacks.

With you around

Sometimes there is this one person that doesn’t need to do much, but knowing as long as the person is around things are much more different.

It’s the same with Akaashi and Bokuto, not only because they play essential roles for the other in their team but also in many various ways.

Akaashi stated in the OVA that when he sees Bokuto spike and give his best it urges him to do his best as well and let Bokuto succeed to see that amazing view that motivates him. Despite all the trouble he has to go through, it's the most satisfying and rewarding feeling for him as long as Bokuto is around to be that role model Ace and also the figure of energy that fuels him to try his best as well.

For Akaashi it might not seem like he needs to do his best for himself, but for Bokuto he also knows that there is a limit to how much he can bring out his potential. It doesn't make him less of a safety net and security for Bokuto as the feeling of being right there in the right moment and time is enough to at least make the big owl a little bit less insecure.

Therefore Akaashi can be at his best when Bokuto is around while Bokuto doesn't need to try too hard to hide his downfalls when Akaashi is around.

With no questions

Sometimes even if you know a person for a long time it still feels like they are questioning you for one reason or another. It may be due to a habit, something you like or a certain pattern in behavior.

But to be able to accept something without questions requires a strong bond and tolerance which doesn't come with only time and respect.

Bokuto has his little habits and we see him fuss over the smallest things like the place he is at or how many people are watching. While many reprimand him or question him about his antics Akaashi is the only one who tries to understand and accept that Bokuto is the way he is. It's quite the opposite. Akaashi rather blames himself for not being able to figure Bokuto out completely and reaching that understanding instead of accusing Bokuto for making a big deal out of small things.

Because every person reacts differently to certain problems or triggers, it shows the deep consideration of Akaashi trying to take these details to heart and remember them instead of forcing Bokuto to change himself drastically.

It shows that with all his strengths and flaws he accepts Bokuto for who he is and tries to adapt in order to cheer him up and get him back on track.

Same goes for Bokuto who doesn't like getting scolded or lectured by anyone and oftentimes refuses to listen for example to Kuroo or other team mates. His pride and simplistic way of seeing things yet having a complex world of emotions often shuts out others from criticizing him as he thinks they are making fun of him.

But we see him taking every word of Akaashi by heart and silently listening to the younger one, sometimes retaliating but still taking the advice or scolding.

Why?

Because he doesn't need to question Akaashi, he knows that he doesn't mean any harm with the things he says but is always out to make things better.

It results from the trust and reliability we mentioned earlier to reach this level of friendship.

With these seven reasons Bokuto and Akaashi's relationship seems far more precious than it has already been and we learn that the duo's fundamental basics of trust and respect is met in order to carry it on.

i’ve said it once and i’ll say it as much as i can !!! he is the only boyfriend !! Ever !!!!

as we all know akaashi is pretty observant on a lot of things seeing that he’s their team’s vice captain and setter, he gotta be

he’s used to being keen on the people around him especially when it comes to his best friend, bokuto so it’s kinda a given that he’s used to it

when you and him started dating, he was almost always pretty nervous when it came to you cause you always used to intimidate him

and now that you’re someone he’s in a romantic relationship with, he figured it’s his job to make sure he knows what you want

basically he’s an over attentive babie

he never really saw anything in your habits worth noting other than the fact that you had a knack for taking home his hoodies and not returning them

you, showing up to school with his hoodie on: hey akaashi let’s exchange hoodies i like the one you have on right now

akaashi: but it looks exactly the same..?

you: yea but this doesn’t smell like you anymore 🥺👉👈

he’s so !!! soft !!!!!

he really lets you take home every hoodie you borrow from him for that sole reason and he insisted that he just sprays your clothes with his cologne but you’re like “nah i like it when the smell comes from you”

i 1000% guarantee that this guy smells like fresh cologne but not the strong ones like axe cause he knows what’s up

one time he came over to your place and there’s just a whole ass drawer labeled ‘akaashi’s’ and it has about 3 or 4 of his sweatshirts

you do it so often that it escalates to when you’re coming over you purposefully don’t bring any spare clothes just so you can wear his

some would argue that he’s a bad boyfriend cause of his sharp tongue and stingy attitude

and you know what !!! if you think that, i will fight you !!!! on sight !!!!

he’s a precious boy and he may come off as a bit harsh and too much sometimes but when it comes to people that means a lot to him he’s just the absolute best !!

like akaashi, he’s pretty observant to his friends and teammates so it’s only a given that he’s that keen when it comes to you too

especially when it involves food

you do this thing where whenever the two of you go out to eat, no matter what he orders, you take a bite out of it

at first he was kinda thrown off guard but it didn’t really bother him that much since it was literally just food

he thinks it’s cute at how eager you can be when it comes to what to order moreso when you guys come to a place you haven’t eaten at before

you: maybe i should order their cinnamon coated churros

tsukki: no you don’t like cinnamon

but he’s not trying to dictate you on what to eat, he just knows !!!

he’s seen you react to all kinds of food and by now he’s kinda better than you at knowing what you like

also !! when he’s ordering food, he completely takes you into account as well !!

he wants pizza with full stuffed crusts but he remembers that eating too much bread makes you feel insecure ? nuh uh honey !! he’s not getting that !!

oh boy

one thing to know about kuroo when he’s in a relationship is that he’s a real fricken !!! SIMP !!!!!

simp in the sense that he’s so whipped and just borderline adores you bro i’m not even kidding

he’s a simp but only for you !!!

that includes walking you home everyday even if that meant you have to wait up until his practices end and carrying your books for you even when you insist that they’re not heavy at all

he also likes the way you smell a lot !!!

that’s why he loves giving you hugs especially when they’re from behind and he buries his head on the crook of your neck and just takes a whiff

like it’s super weird, but to him you just smell so fresh and good that for christmas you gave him a bottle of the perfume you wear to school everyday as a joke and he liked it

the first time you invited him over to chill at your house was on a thursday evening to study together and that’s when he met your mom

he loved your mom !!!

she was so cool with having him around that before you knew it your small study date turned into watching movies with him and your mother in the living room

he kept making jokes in between that you were sure your mom wouldn’t allow that that was the last time he came over

so short afternoons turned into spending the day together at your house or sneaking in through the window to hang out

he got so used to always being there every thursday for movie night that it wasn’t even a surprise to anyone that your mom trusted him enough to be alone with you

kuroo, at your house: hey! is it okay if i hang out here for a while? we don’t have practice haha

your mom: oh but y/n won’t be getting home for another hour..?

kuroo, already taking off his shoes: oh that’s totally fine

your mom joked about getting him his own key since he’s practically there all the time

* he doesn't remember important dates. akaashi is his calendar. anniversary? he doesn't know. it'll take him a long time for it to stick in his head. his reasoning for not remembering is because "once we get married we'll have to remember another date so why do double work" smh this man will be the death of you

* he will want you to come to ALL his matches. all the time. expects you to cheer. the first time you watched him it gave you chills how good he was. he looked really cool and when you praised him and all he was so blushy and happy and GWAH. precious bby

* he will shout your name when he scores. prepare for embarrassment. no matter how thick skinned you are, bokuto can and will one up you.

* win or lose, please praise him after the match. it will lift him out of the emo mode, or make him even happier - and a happy bokuto is just so so cute. he is a star~ hinata may be the sun, but bokuto is your own sun in a solar system with just the two of you. so cheesy omg i cant believe i wrote that but that's what bokuto does to people

* basically he needs all the affirmation and attention so pls give it to him.

* bokuto likes amusement park dates. he finds them exciting. if you don't like it, he will tease you, but he will also try his best to make you like it.

* sometimes he does go overboard, and it will make you angry. he wouldn't know what to do. sometimes he will get angry back. sometimes he will just be stunned and stare at you. sometimes he will be flustered and start babbling. either way he's just not that good with it.

* he will ask kuroo for advice. kuroo is a True Blue Bro™️ and will give him good advice.

* bokuto will turn up at your place with apology flowers and a movie so you two can make up nicely. he also ordered your fav food in advance. akaashi was the one who did most of the ordering and suggested the flowers and stuff. is akaashi his secretary? yes he is. save akaashi

* anyway movie night is the only thing that bokuto came up with on his own

* he really likes movie nights cos it's an excuse to snuggle and cuddle and get all your attention what about the movie bokuto san? akaashi sighs. akaashi is long suffering.
