Soooooooooooooooooooo....

It’s been about two weeks since it happened, but my PS4 basically had a power issue that caused it to do a full factory reset on its own. I lost pretty much everything that I had on there because nothing was backed up.

Long story short, the majority of the save files I had on there were ones that I really didn’t need to keep around. I had my super long FFX, FFXV, TW3 and KH1.5/2.5 remix files on there from previous playthroughs, and wasn’t really planning on doing much with those anyway because I had finished everything I wanted to with them except for like most of the FFX trophies and the FFXV DLCs which didn’t need much from my original save files to begin with. What really killed me was that I lost ALL of my saved data and latest screencaps and videos that I still had on there from RDR2.

Good news: the RDR2 story mode trophies that I had been focusing on before jumping back online are all saved to my PSN profile, so I didn’t lose any of the merit of getting those done.

Absolute worst part of all of this: I. was. 68. fucking. gold. medal. missions. in. on. the. 70. gold. medal. story. mode. mission. trophy.

68/70 for the Gold Rush trophy. S I X T Y. E I G H T. O U T. O F. S E V E N T Y.

Meaning, now that my original save data is gone (the 536 hours of save data where I had all of my fave guns/equipment, all of the trapper sets because I fucking could, all of everything my little heart could want), I’m going to have to replay the entire game to even begin trying for gold on those missions. Again.

Two. A pair of loafers so broken down I avoid wearing them whenever possible, and a pair of fine sneakers.

All I remember is that Duff McWhalen’s theme song was playing throughout it and it was really annoying after a while.

13. What talents do you have?

I would say my talents are acute memory of obscure topics, vivid storytelling, and I’m pretty good at video games.

It doesn’t happen with much frequency nowadays, but when I was younger and it happened a bit more often, I could always tell when I was being observed with no other clues. I could feel the eyes on my back. I can also bend spoons and set fires with my mind but that’s less interesting.

More like favorite song right now, but probably Rocket Surgeon.

16. Favorite movie?

The Persona 3 movies currently.

17. Who would be your ideal partner?

Off of the top of my head, I’m imagining someone who’s heart-throbbing to look at (pretty women or cute boys), pretty sharp, tough to boot, has a lot in common with me, and is understanding too. I’ve got a few quirks, and it’d be nice to know that I’m not condemned to dying alone because of them.

18. Do you want children?

Not in the slightest.

19. Do you want a church wedding?

I don’t even want a wedding wedding. If we’re partners, isn’t being together enough? From what I know, weddings just add unnecessary stress and complication.

20. Are you religious?

I’m definitely spiritual, and Religion connected to that, even if I don’t devote myself to a specific doctrine. It’s less pantheism and more “they’re probably all true to an extent and also SMT is real”. In any case I just try to be a good person.

21. Have you ever been to the hospital?

As a patient, none that I could remember but I know I went because of various injuries. As a visitor, quite a few times.

22. Have you ever got in trouble with the law?

I’ve done things that would get me in trouble with the law, but have not run afoul of them yet. The closest would be that one time I was staying at a hotel, and the police knocked on my door and asked if I knew where someone was living. I didn’t, but I guessed anyway, and that’s how half the hotel had the police knocking on their door.

23. Have you ever met any celebrities?

No.

I want to be a famous author, so kind of. But I want to still retain my anonymity and not have my real name and face attached to stuff. Yoko Taro gives me hope in that regard, because he’s rather famous but any information we know about him, we know on his terms. That’s how I want to live.

28. What type of music do you like?

I usually listen to video game OSTs, and most of the ones I listen to are so genre-blending so it’s hard to pin down. Most of it is instrumental, but I’m not opposed to music with vocals. Genres aren’t cohesive, so I’d say “music that makes you want to punch robots to” and “music that makes you want to talk to friends to”. J-rap is pretty good though.

29. Have you ever been skinny dipping?

Hell no!

30. How many pillows do you sleep with?

One.

31. What position do you usually sleep in?

I toss and turn before going to sleep and while asleep, but my back seems to be consistent.

It’s pretty decent. 2 room 1 bath, and the living room is rectangular.

Milk & cereal, or pop-tarts.

34. Have you ever fired a gun?

No, but I want to.

I think once in grade school. I wish I could try again though.

Cerebral just off the top of my head.

Bastard or Shit. The former is innately funny and all-purpose to refer to someone. The latter is so versatile it can be used in any context.

I think a day, although the standard is around 18.

I don’t think so.

40. Have you ever had a secret admirer?

I think there was one person in school who had a thing for me but they were gay and at the time I thought I was straight, so I paid them no mind. There was also someone who said “X likes you”, but I didn’t know who X was so I said “cool” and went on my way. I was also propositioned once in middle school, but that’s less “secret admirer” and more “sexual harasser”.

41. Are you a good liar?

I think so.

42. Are you a good judge of character?

For good people, yes. For bad people, no.

43. Can you do any other accents other than your own?

Yeah. I remember playing Undertale and my little sister was nearby, and I decided to voice all the characters. I had a lot of fun!

I’m actually the only member of my family that doesn’t have a Boston accent.

Russian, hands-down.

According the the Myers-Briggs test I just took, ISFP-T/Adventurer. Which is bizarre considering I’m pretty sure I got a different result a year or so ago. According to “what word would you use”, droll.

I have no idea. Either those sneakers, or the heavy winter jacket I got when I was in Colorado. Both were gifts, so I never saw the pricetag, but my Dad said they were pretty nice-looking.

My knowledge of spiders is well enough that I know at least 2 types of spiders who can kill you horribly in one bite, and know little enough that I can’t tell any of them apart from common house spiders. I’m more afraid of dying stupidly because the boner spider snuck up on me than the idea of spiders themselves.

Either Macaroni & Cheese or Cheeseburgers.

Burritos probably, even though I usually only eat meat and cheese on them. Are you detecting a theme because I am.

I try to be clean, but I’m usually a bit scattered.

I wouldn’t even know where to begin finding that out.

Maybe a few minutes, although I’m usually working on a set routine.

Most if not all of my friends, and the people I admire as well, all either start hating me or end up hating me and I lose every social connection I have or want to have. The reason varies, whether it be my fault or someone slandering me, but being hated by people I like freaks me out. As does the idea of not being able to tell my stories.

I’d like to say no but considering I rather frequently discuss discourse in my Discord chats, I guess I am.

I do not watch drama films.

No, but I was offered twice. Once by an irresponsible (and awful) authority figure, once by some kids in the bathroom. Both times I said “no thanks”, and funny enough the former tried to change my mind, and the latter just said “ok cool”.

Oh god here come the bad memories. I’m heavily abbreviating and redacting information to protect the identities of me and all involved, but in Colorado I met someone in middle school who more or less fit all my parameters for “ideal partner”. But I was terminally nervous and I didn’t want to ruin our friendship, so I left it at that. Eventually I had to abruptly leave the state for reasons I don’t want to get into, and all a week or so later I made a Facebook account and found all my friends. My contact with my crush was the most constant. Eventually, I was talking with a different buddy, and they mentioned romantic problems. I mentioned I had some too, and they eventually ferreted it out of me. They told me I should confess, and I said no, both because I want to remain friends, and because I can’t do a long-distance relationship. They told me they’d go behind my back if I didn’t, and I warned them not to. Five minutes later, I get messaged by my crush. To put it short, it wouldn’t work out. I stopped talking to both, and was pretty depressed afterwards, to the point where I couldn’t feel any romance, sexuality, or companionship towards anybody. I got over it sometime later, and I think I realized I was bi around the same time. I kind of wish I could smooth things over, but it’s been so long I don’t think it’s an option anymore. Plus Facebook has a horrible interface and is terrible so I really don’t want to.

I’m currently anime-only (although I’m not bothered by spoilers) so I may not grasp the scope of Rebecca and Shiki’s relationship as well as longtime fans, but I really like them and wanted to participate in the ship week anyways ^^;;;

This is about Shiki wanting to stay in the same room as Rebecca at the start of their time together. I feel like Shiki would end up clinging to her the whole time if she did agree - she’s just so soft and warm all over, how could he not? Unable to wake him up nor wriggle free, Rebecca is stuck suffering in multiple ways.

ANOTHER SAMURAI FLAMENCO ESSAY because I sure as heck don’t know when to stop.

This one’s on the Hero’s Journey, how the show bookends Goto as a hero, and where Goto’s heroic journey intersects with Hazama’s “What is Love” epiphany.

You can thank the essay entitled “The Heroic Ideal” by Diana Wynne Jones for sparking some thoughts on the Hero’s Journey.

One of the common tropes in storytelling is the way in which the hero, having acted graciously to someone on the course of his journey, is paid back by that same someone later on. The Jones essay summarizes it as “the hero’s honor, courage, or plain niceness cause him to befriend some being who will later come powerfully to his aid.” Then, when he is in deep trouble beyond the scope of his own ability to overcome, the story can end tragically -- OR he can “call in the debt from the powerful being he befriended earlier and, with difficulty, prevail.”

This is pretty much the “old lady turned out to be a witch, so being nice to her grants you a boon” storyline, although its actual manifestation varies dramatically depending on the story. In the finale to The Last Airbender, for example, minor characters who had been part of smaller, earlier story arcs show up to fight on the front lines against the final antagonist. In an another pop-culture example, this is exactly what Episode 68 of The Adventure Zone did as well: (spoiler alert) Everyone who had been helped by the main trio during the course of the podcast showed up in Episode 68 to lend a hand and do their part to turn back the encroaching army of shadows.

Usually kindness repays kindness but there are variations. In Lord of the Rings when Bilbo (and then Frodo) spares Gollum’s life; Gollum later becomes instrumental in the destruction of the Ring. If either Bilbo or Frodo had given in to the compulsion to kill him, Frodo would have been lured away by the siren call of the Ring. It is only by Gollum’s intervention that the Ring is actually destroyed.

Samurai Flamenco is an interesting example (in my opinion), in that the person who does this “cashing in” at the end isn’t Masayoshi. It’s Goto.

This is not to say that Goto is the hero of the story overall. Masayoshi is indisputably the one who encounters trials, amasses aid, and comes back to the “real world” with lessons learned and goals achieved. He (not Goto) is the one who forges ahead into the unknown and completes the loop of the monomyth/traditional Hero’s Journey. Masayoshi even has his own example of the “you helped me so I’l help you” trope when the blind man he rescues from thugs gives him a place to stay for the night and reawakens his faith in and love for humanity.

But in discussing the finale, Goto is the one whose earlier kindness is paid back by the person he’s assisted earlier in the story.

Naturally, as this is a bookending trope, we can look at the finale only if we look at episode 1.

Episode 1 starts out from Goto’s point of view, and one of the first things he does (besides text his girlfriend and buy some groceries) is encounter a stranger in need of aid.

It’s a small act of kindness, but Goto gives Masayoshi clothes enough to make it back to his apartment in semi-decent condition.

By the end of the episode, they’ve become friends and he’s also rescued Masayoshi from being beaten to an absolute pulp.

Throughout the rest of the show, Goto helps and supports Hazama through his various schemes and difficulties, never asking for anything back. He answers Hazama’s call for help frequently and consistently. If you want a screencap an episode, I can get you that, otherwise, it’s pretty clear how supportive Goto is and how much Masayoshi comes to appreciate and rely on his assistance.

Regarding the finale, Masayoshi is definitely the factor that instigated the crisis in the first place. His rousing speech in episode 1 paved the way for Haiji to grow into the final antagonist. And, in the pattern of a lot of superhero stories, the villain takes the hero’s most-valuable-person hostage as a final gambit.

(As an aside, Haiji is a subversion of the “you helped me so I’ll help you’ trope being discussed here. The speech Masayoshi gives him in episode 1 – a kindness extended – is paid back with cruelty and violence. Instead of coming back as a surprise ally, Haiji comes back as a surprise villain.)

Masayoshi comes into the final conflict alone. He has called on the Flamengers, he has called on Red Axe, and he has called on the Flamenco Girls, and none are there with him. He is there to confront Haiji, of course, but as events play out, he is ultimately there to help Goto.

This is where Goto’s kindness in episode 1 (and in all the ensuing episodes) pays off. Because as soon as Haiji deletes the texts from Goto’s phone, the final confrontation is no longer between Haiji and Masayoshi. It’s not even between Goto and Haiji. It’s between Goto and his own darker nature.

Haiji knows this, too.

Goto, who has been unfailingly helpful and modest and quietly heroic throughout the series, gets his own final boss. Haiji destroys every remaining trace of Goto’s girlfriend as a way to tempt Goto away from his ideals and his morals. And it works.

Goto doesn’t have the strength to win this fight on his own. This is his final battle, and he’s losing.

In comes Masayoshi to the rescue.

The screencap above is of Masayoshi’s words to Haiji, but they are also relevant to what he does for Goto after the intervention with Haiji fails to resolve the conflict at hand. I want to write a separate essay sometime about Sam Flam and what it has to say about love, but for now, we’ll take it in summary.

Directing his promise of love to Haiji doesn’t solve the problem. Masayoshi knows that Goto needs help, but his mistake is in thinking that Goto needs to be rescued from Haiji. Eliminating Haiji as an antagonist solves nothing: Goto is still struggling and his fight isn’t really with Haiji at this point. It’s a fight against despair and loss and hopelessness and isolation.

Faced with this, faced with a fight he can’t possibly win on his own, Goto finally gets to cash in on the debt from episode one. Masayoshi finally pays Goto back for his kindness and generosity and simple act of charity.

The crux of it boils down to Goto’s “I’m all alone now!” met with Masayoshi’s “You’re not alone!” But Masayoshi’s payback goes beyond even that:

Masayoshi gives him a way out. Masayoshi gives him what he needs to prevail over what he can’t beat on his own. If being alone is what is breaking Goto apart, Masayoshi gives him proof that no, you’re not alone, I’m going to be here with you, too. I’m going to stay with you through your suffering and help you see through it to the other side.

And that’s enough. That promise of help is enough. Goto cashes in on the love and assistance he showed Masayoshi from episode one, and Masayoshi, by offering him love in kind -- a love multiplied vastly beyond what was offered in episode 1 -- helps pull Goto through the final confrontation with himself. Goto has been a loving and devoted companion to Masayoshi, and Masayoshi here pays him back in full and helps pull Goto out of his own personal darkness.

True to Jones’s quote, if Goto hadn’t been able to cash in on this debt-of-love, his ending would have been a tragic one. He would have lost his personal integrity, his drive to live, and all of the moral goodness that he embodied throughout the show. But he does cash in, he does let Masayoshi come to his aid, and Masayoshi -- in a show otherwise about him and his own growth as a person -- steps aside as the hero of the story to come in as a catalyst for Goto’s personal, much-condensed, heroic journey at the finale.

(And, of course, for Masayoshi’s promised aid to be a meaningful offer, he does need to mean what he said in his final, earnest promise.)

TL;DR summary: Goto rescues a naked guy in an alley in episode 1, and in episode 22, the naked guy comes back and gives Goto what he needs to survive the final boss fight. (And that thing is love.)
