February is the month of the Oscars, naturally, but it is also the time of the year when another exciting film event takes place – The Berlin Film Festival. Despite being more sombre and politically-oriented than the glitzy Academy Awards, the Berlinale remains one of the most popular festivals in Europe. This year, the interest of the audience was so great, that many people waited for hours to buy passes, some going as far as to spend the night camping in front of the festival’s venue. The 67th Berlinale’s highest prize, the Golden Bear, was awarded to the film “On Body and Soul” by Hungarian director Ildikó Enyedi. Revolving around two people who fall in love in a slaughterhouse, “On Body and Soul” impressed viewers with its mix of emotional depth and humour. You can watch the film’s trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FjooEXbE2c The festival’s second best accolade, the Silver Bear Grand Jury prize, went to Alain Gomis for his drama “Félicité,” while the awards for best actor and actress were given to Georg Friedrich (“Bright Nights”) and Kim Min-hee (“On the Beach at Night Alone”), respectively. The Jury was headed by director Paul Verhoeven and included actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, artist Olafur Eliasson and director and screenwriter Wang Quan'an, among others.
