Dungeon Meshi Liveblog: Musing on Ages, & Dragon Prep

"Desire" mention - how much does Tensu know of the details of the origin of dungeons? (More than I do, probably...but I know this is thematically important.)

"Us"? Aren't gnomes another long-lived species? Ok this is going to be continuously relevant to the geopolitics so I need to break it down. From the wiki:

Elves: lifespan: 400; adult at 80

Gnomes: lifespan: 240; adult at 40

Dwarves: lifespan: 200; adult at 40

Tallmen: lifespan: 60; adult at 16

Orcs: lifespan: 55; adult at 14

Kobolds: lifespan: 55; adult at 13

Halffoots: lifespan: 50; adult at 14

I see - so really we're dealing with 3 factions: Elves, Gnomes & Dwarves, and Everyone Else. I find it interesting that the longer-lived races reach maturity at 17-20% of their average lifespan, while the younger-lived races all do so at around 25% of their average lifespan. I feel a little like this is a cop-out on the writer's part in trying to keep the ages of maturity a little closer to one another - though of course it's a cultural thing by each race (and, I'm sure, each culture within each race - idk how monolithic the whole comic will treat them, but it would track with the thematic worldbuilding for their to be multiple distinct social groups within each race, even if they do tent to band together against the other races!)

Based on the categories of "long-lived" and "short-lived", the latter seem to view all of the former as much the same - but I'm SURE the Elves have a different view of it, and I'm sure the Dwarves and, as we see here, Gnomes, are very aware of and irritated by the Elves' view.

...and as we see here, and earlier with Chilchuck admitting to being 29 (solidly middle-aged!) and Marcille going, "Aw, so you are a kid!", people rarely make any effort to understand each others relative ages, instead just coasting on their own life-based assumptions.

With reference to above, we can see that Namari at 61 is pretty exactly equivalent to Kaka and Kiki at 20.

Also: this little scene wasn't in the show at all and I love it! Namari in mentor mode!

"Elriel ended in the bonus chapter"

Let's look at this argument logically.

The bonus chapter takes place like 80% of the way into the book, during solstice. Somewhere between chapter 58 & 59 of ACOSF.

Chapter 59: Nesta has a sleepover with Gwyn & Emerie.

No mention of the necklace around Gwyn's throat. No mention of her even saying she received a necklace - and that's exactly the sort of shit you'd talk about at girls night 🙄

Chapter 60: Gwyn, Emerie, & Nesta cut the ribbon (in that order). Then they pass the BR qualifier. 🥹

There is no romantic interaction between Gwyn & Azriel. Azriel is there when they cut the ribbon, same as Cassian.

Chapter 61: Nesta makes it down the steps 🥹

Again, no romantic interaction between Gwyn & Azriel

Chapter 62: Cassian tells Nesta they're mates 😭

Other than Nesta herself saying having a mate makes her lose her last tie to being human and makes her like them (*cough* something people accuse Elain of struggling with but it's NESTA's trauma too)...

Chapter 63: The girls get taken to the blood rite

After which, Azriel tells Cassian to focus on getting Eris back instead of going after the girls in the BR.

Then after the BR, there's one brief mention of Az & Cass lecturing the Valkyries on the mistakes made during the BR. Nothing else after that.

Gwyn & Azriel's last interaction is again, a group setting where they still have the trainer/trainees relationship.

So now, let's take a step back and look at this argument of "Elriel ended in the BC bc they don't interact after it, and the BC launched Gwynriel!"

While it is true there are no more Elriel interactions after the BC - again - let's remember the reason for that. Rhys explicitly forbidding Azriel away from Elain. We know why there are no interactions.

Their last interaction ends on a misunderstanding.

Azriel is not happy about the command from Rhys - clearly - given he loses a snowball fight he'd planned for a year and is stone faced at training the next day, not even giving Nesta a smile.

We don't see Elain much after the BC. She's not even mentioned until Nesta comes back to Feyre giving birth.

But does this mean Azriel pursued Gwyn? No. He didn't.

They are both unattached. Sure, I can humor yall and say it "meant something" when Az felt a "spark" at the thought of her joy in the BC - and still - nothing? No follow up?

Nothing about Azriel & Gwyn's interactions was inherently romantic before, during, and after the BC.

There is literally no reason for Azriel to not pursue Gwyn after solstice, if they are allegedly mates. Theres no reason he didn't pursue Gwyn when he met her 2 years ago, way before Elain. The mating bond does not need to snap into place for mates to be drawn to each other 🙄 Theres nothing holding them apart and still he does not change in the way he interacts with her.

I will once again remind people that saying Elriel ended in the bonus chapter does not automatically launch the Gwynriel ship. For Gwynriel to have canon existence, they have to have romantic attraction on the page.

And I'm sorry but "see you tomorrow, Shadowsinger" is not romantic attraction when the entirety of Pythian calls Azriel that. It's not said in a flirty tone by Gwyn, it's said in a flippant, competitive context.

To celebrate RAINBOW!'s release today, I'm going to go over all the daydream references that have been made so far, since it's fun for me to sneak them in 💖 there's a lot of them though, so it's gonna be under the cut!

Episode 1-- Kiki's Delivery Service and E.T.! People focus on the Kiki reference so much that the other seemed to be missed.

Episode 2-- Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion, Sailor Moon. Another one obvious enough to be called out in some comments. It was referenced again in episode 54, where this panel was taken from.

Episode 5-- Marceline, Adventure time. One of the few reference that isn't an outfit specifically, but a character.

Episode 11-- Revolutionary Girl Utena. Not necessarily supposed to be the characters themselves, just the outfits.

Episode 11-- Minako Aino, Sailor Moon. In hindsight, I don't remember why I chose this specific dress to reference and not the maid outfits from Sailor Stars or the fruits maid outfits from the manga... especially since I think the fruits maid outfits are adorable.

Episode 11-- Catra, She-Ra reboot. I kind of regretted this one immediately just because like 80% of the comments on the episode were "CATRA SUIT!!!" as a result...

Episode 18-- Sailor Moon manga. I was always intrigued by the way characters would be dressed in dreamlike/ethereal sequences in the manga, so this reference was a must for me. I went with the version that is a full dress with straps rather than the dresses from other moments in the manga that have no discernible top half.

Episode 30 and 31-- Not a reference to any specific film or character, but just film noir in general. I do remember referencing a female character specifically for this but sadly I couldn't find it again.

Episode 40-- Pomeranian scene, IT Chapter Two. Surely you saw this coming (or maybe not?) I don't think I got the camera angle good enough to really sell this reference, but I couldn't resist it anyways.

Episode 43-- Adult Losers, IT Chapter Two. The only reference besides Marceline that references the characters themselves, since I normally use our other characters for background character purposes. Also one of the only references that isn't a daydream.

Episode 54-- Disney's Snow White and Cinderella. I couldn't decide which to reference, so I ended up leaning mostly into Cinderella, but referenced the Evil Queen's crown as well. Boo's dress is also somewhat referenced from the the live action Cinderella dress instead of the animated version, just because I liked it.

Episode 54-- Treasure Planet and Treasure Planet 2 concept art. Treasure planet is one of my favorite movies, so there was no way I was missing out on referencing it. A few people brought up some wlw pirate webcomic(s?) in the comments of this episode, but the actual reference seemed to be mostly missed. The sash around Boo's waist is also meant to be fabric from her princess dress in the previous panels.

Episode 54-- Revolutionary Girl Utena. Another one I was kind of surprised wasn't called out just because of how iconic the whole clothed shadow/silhouette thing is.

Episode 55-- Saint Tail. I couldn't reference this one as closely as I would have liked since it probably wouldn't have been very readable as a magician's costume to someone who didn't know it, so it mostly references the brooch from the anime and her hat.

Episode 61-- Jane Fonda in Spirits of the Dead. A super random and out there reference, especially to end on, but I liked the outfit so much that I couldn't help it. Maybe Boo used to fall asleep to old movie channels, lol.

That's it, at least for now! We'll have to see what shows up in future episodes~

The tug-of-war between the two groups comes from the fact that Bruce canonically has codependency issues with Dick. He honestly needs his son at all times for everything.

The source of Bruce and Dick's relationship problems all sum up to this:

"I wanted to give him the freedom to make his own choices. To do things his way, even if that meant making mistakes. And then...well, then I blamed him for how difficult it was for me to let him go."

He's so, so proud of Dick but he refuses to release him to be free. When Dick manages to get away Bruce hisses and shrieks in rage and fury and hurt that Dick left. Even those long stints where Dick was ignoring Bruce after being fired or after Jason's death, Bruce never ignored Dick. Sometimes going as far as stalking him like at the circus.

This one is post-Jason, pre-Tim era.

The New Titans (1988) Issue #61

Ignoring the self-realization backtrack, it's applaudable that Bruce was even able to get those words out at all. Usually it's just heavily implied.

So the reason why Bruce hates the Titans so much is because they're his biggest threat. They have the possibility of taking Dick away from him forever and he's terrified of such a future.

It wasn't originally like this though. In the beginning when Dick said, I'm gonna hang out with the Titans, Bruce'd be like "Sure, Chum, have fun!"

But as Dick grew older, there was increasing animosity between the Titans and Bruce. It got so bad that Bruce gave Dick an ultimatum: Me or the Titans. Choose.

But here's where it gets worse. Bruce and Dick are too busy fighting that they both missed Clayface recovering, obviously in the end they defeat him but neither of them are happy for the oversight which leads to the final scene.

Bruce literally fired Dick because he couldn't stand him staying with the Titans.

"Robin is my second...my lieutenant. Anything less that total devotion to this cause is simply wasting my time."

Devotion to the cause or to you, Bruce? He's freaking Batman. He's done solo runs and Dicks done solo runs as Robin just fine but for some reason whenever the Titans are involved, he loses his goddamn mind.

But hey. Bruce isn't the only one who gives Dick an ultimatum.

Both sides want Dick for themselves. About 80% of the Titans problems with Dick lie in the fact that they want him to have nothing to do with Bruce.

They just want Dick's priority and loyalty to be to them, undivided. Unfortunately, Bruce expects the very same-only it's for himself.

The Titans get so angry at Dick for going back to Bruce and Bruce gets so mad at Dick for favoring the Titans. But Dick loves both of them so there's literally no winning for him. The successful periods for Dick are when both sides comprise for him.

They're willing to work together to protect him though.

yes we do! some parts of the timeline are a little vague, but every live and "in situ" statement (with a few exceptions) has a date attached to it. RUN BTS: THE ANALYTICS | Episodes 61-80

Overall stats:

We have officially lost all Youtube English subs for a section. My annoyance with this doesn't seem to have impacted my overall ratings as the average continues to rise. It also helps that two of my absolute favorite concepts were in this section: Toronto and 007. My least favorite in this section was the Mafia episode.

Title Songs:

We are completely immersed in the Idol era. I do love the imagery of the song and the title credits but I have to admit, when I think of Idol as a theme song for one of BTS's shows, I associate it more with Bon Voyage...not sure why given some of my favorite episodes were in this section. Oh well, my brain is an odd place for sure.

Wins:

Jimin's slice is noticeably smaller this chunk. He's still holding on for the running total . V, JH, JN, and RM barely scraping out a lead. I'm curious to see how this will evolve in the next section. Jin absolutely has the best win during the 007 scavenger hunt.

Losses:

Oh bless our little Jimin, he sure knows how to dominate this section. And RM's slice is getting teeny! While not surprising, it's not necessarily something I often associate with RM; avoiding the punishments in Run. Most iconic loss this section was definitely Jimin gambling his standing during the Toronto episodes.

Best Cheater:

Tae! Such a trickster! And RM is just nonexistent! My favorite cheating moment though was Jimin getting JK to buy a hat for him in Toronto. Not because of them, because of RM's part in revealing his deception. I'm just so endeared.
