help I forgot I was supposed to post. More Marianne and David on October 19, 1973 at the Marquee Club in London- as I said previously, his last performance as Ziggy Stardust.

Sheila - Bang Bang (1966) Written by Sonny Bono in 1966 and originally performed by Cher (it was the second single from her second album), this cover, while not as famous as the one made by Nancy Sinatra, has it's own distinctive personality. The theme of heartbreak and longing seems to have slightly more kick to it in when rendered in French. Unnecessary history: the theme of the song was inspired by Sonny Bono watching kids playing, running around pretending to shoot one another.

OK. here we go. MATCHUPS! notes + text version under the cut
Tumblr media
poll starts Sunday (Dec. 17th) now live !! links under the cut
Jimi Hendrix vs. Jimmy Page Phil Ochs vs. Lou Reed Janis Joplin vs. Jim Morrison Debbie Harry vs. Leonard Cohen Paul McCartney vs. Eric Andersen Syd Barrett vs. Bob Dylan Norma Tanega vs. Levon Helm Chuck Berry vs. Dusty Springfield Ronnie Spector vs. Cher Davy Jones vs. George Harrison John Lennon vs. Joni Mitchell Lesley Gore vs. Graham Nash Nancy Sinatra vs. FranƧoise Hardy Joan Baez vs. Ringo Starr Nick Drake vs. Margo Guryan Dolly Parton vs. Stevie Nicks
SO. i did try to balance around popularity and how well-known an artist is because (from my experience) people do tend to vote for the person they happen to know regardless of poll theme... but as i was sorting this i realized that, wow, a lot of these guys are INSANELY well known. it was hard to just outright avoid wild matchups in round 1, they were kind of inevitable.
(also, before anyone says it, i am aware that debbie harry/blondie is more 80s... she was technically musically active in the 60s and i just straight up missed it while checking artists i didn't know, but that's entirely on me)

Bee Gees - Idea (Atco, US Cover, 1968) - Design and illustration by Klaus Voormann
For the US release, Atco hired Voormann to illustrate this composite head of each of the group members. Presumably Atco wasn't impressed by the light bulb cover and wanted something more elaborate. Which makes you wonder why Polydor didn't just use this one for all future re-releases.

I just learned that Joe Meek made the VERY FIRST OPENLY QUEER REFERENCE in British music historyšŸ˜
This was in 1966 so after he got outed and publicly shamed for his sexuality. The very last song his big success the Tornados released just months before he ended his life, one of the last pieces of art he left to the world was sneaking the first open queer rep hidden on a B-side after 2:18min of instrumental into mainstream music, right under the nose of Columbia records.
Thereā€™s something so beautifully defiant in that.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On a more annoying note, hereā€™s David Watts complaining that he and Rob Huxley (who are theĀ Ā guys that voiced the conversation) got done dirty by Joe, because he made them say something gay without their knowledgeā€¦
Go cry in the corner straight boyšŸ™„
Tumblr media
Like this is from 2015 not 1966 and heā€™s still "uh Iā€™m glad Iā€™m not on the picture related to that song" yeah because people being aware that you helped a queer man create a queer piece of art would be the WORSTšŸ™„.
He acts as if Joe kissed him without consent, not as if he made him record a song! (Which is literally his job.) Just because you were involved with a gay song you donā€™t suddenly become gay, musicians take part in creating songs that donā€™t reflect their personal lived reality all the time. Heā€™s also involved in songs (that I HOPE arenā€™t reflecting his own life) in which the romantic interest is referred to as "little girl" or literally said to be 16/17ā€¦ and somehow he never had a problem with THAT!
