my foot is broken: what i've learned after a few days on crutches

shit I didn't know/even think about before edition

your armpits are NOT supposed to be resting on the crutches. you are supposed to use the handles, straighten your arms, and the top of the crutches are supposed to be about an inch or two lower than your armpits- the rubber is just there because otherwise it'd really fuck up your upper arms. crutches make your PALMS hurt, not your armpits.

default hospital aluminum crutches can fuck you up. they cracked my damn phone screen. they will crack your head open if you let them.

carrying/holding shit with crutches is HARD. like, near impossible if you're trying to hold a medium sized thing in your hand. if your friend is new to crutches and tries carrying something while clearly struggling, please help them.

also heavy backpacks are fucking nightmares in crutches. do they give you more momentum? yes. do they make your palms hurt even more because they're not supporting 120 pounds of person but now 15 more pounds of pure academic beef (and candy)? YES. also my boot is heavy so that's like an extra 6-7 pounds. that's 20 extra pounds, y'all.

being able to put some pressure on your foot is a GAME CHANGER. y'all if one of those feet is not touching the ground you're either swole or need to take breaks because damn I did that for a whole day and I was so goddamn tired by the end of it (remember, I'm also a regular rock climber- this was definitely more tiring than going to the gym, to say the least)

being injured has made me really appreciate how good my body is at compensating. can't use the foot? knee. can't get up to throw something away? it's a 3 pt shot. need to sit down but you're facing the wrong way, on one foot, and your crutches are across the room? balance and spin around! it's a flourish and also fun! every new thing I need to adjust to is just a quick problem solving task with multiple right answers.

yes, you can't do menial tasks like you usually do. yes, you'll be frustrated that you straight up can not do some things. but listen, able-bodied people whose injury isn't permanent, you're literally going to heal. you have the rest of your life to do everything like you did before. have fun with doing it differently for a few months.

this is by no means exhaustive (I actually have a helluva lot more written down) and definitely not reflective of people who live with mobility aids on the regular- just some things I hadn't realized as an able bodied person who's also never needed a proper mobility aid before

2. Secure Your Vehicle

Turn off your engine and engage the emergency or parking brake before you change a flat. Wheel chocks or a heavy rock can be placed behind the opposite side of the side that's being raised to keep your car from rolling.

3. Grab Your Jack, Spare Tire, and Tools

Consult your owner's manual to check the location of your jack, spare tire, or tire tools if you've never previously used them. After you’ve found these essentials, we recommend you try them out and get familiar with how to use them, so you’re comfortable performing the next few steps in a crunch.

Waiting to learn how to use your tools on a dark, rainy night can be frustrating and even dangerous. We recommend doing a practice run when your tire is not flat so you can get a feel for how to perform the task.

4. Loosen the Lug Nuts Slightly Before You Jack Up Your Car

If your car has a wheel cover (hubcap), remove it first by using a screwdriver or the flat end of the jack handle or lug wrench. Note: On some cars, the wheel cover is held in place by the lug nuts. Leave this style cover on the flat wheel.

Use the lug wrench to loosen the lugs nuts by turning the wrench counter clockwise. Hold the wrench firmly and push down. Never pull up on the wrench. If the nuts are too tight, use penetrating oil to loosen them or use your foot to push down on lug wrench. Loosen the lug nuts only one turn. Do not remove the lug nuts at this time.

5. Lift Up Your Car

Consult with your owner’s manual for the best place to secure you jack, and follow these directions carefully! Crank your car up to at least 6 inches, or however much is needed to remove the flat tire. Lower your car to reposition the jack if you notice an instability. Caution: Never place a jack under the axle or suspension member.

6. Remove the Lug Nuts and Wheel

Use the lug wrench to remove the nuts. Place the lug nuts where you won’t lose them, such as on the inside of your car door. Pull the wheel off and set it aside.

7. Remove the Flat Tire

Remove the flat tire with both hands. Pull the tire towards you and place it under the car, just in case your jack is unstable and drops your car. Hit the rubber with a hammer or use a liquid penetrate to loosen the joints if you have difficulty removing the tire due to rust.

8. Put on Your Spare

Place your spare tire in front of the wheel well, align it with the wheel bolts, and then add your lug nuts. Turn the lug nuts clockwise by hand as tightly as possible. Then take your wrench and turn the bolt tight enough to secure the tire before lowering it to the ground. Do not completely tighten. Note: There are different tightening sequences for 4- and 5 -lug wheels. Tightening the nuts in the proper sequence ensures that the wheel mounts properly and that the stress is evenly distributed over the wheel.

9. Lower Your Car

Slowly lower your vehicle to the ground. Remove the jack and block. Tighten the lug nuts as much as possible, in proper sequence. Caution: Many spare tires are not full-size, normal tires.

These smaller spares can’t be driven at normal speeds and should only be driven for short distances. Consult your owner’s manual for instructions and warnings for driving with a compact spare.

Crew Max models also have a unique reclining and sliding rear seat, while Double Cabs get a folding seat bottom that allows for a flat storage area when the seat isn't in use.

The base engine on regular and Double Cab standard-bed models is a 236-horsepower, 4.0L V6. Crew Max and Double Cab long-bed models get a 4.6L V8 making 310 horsepower and 327 ft-lb of torque. A 5.7L "iForce" V8 making 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque is available on all models and on 4-wheel drive Tundras, in some regions, the engine can be optioned to run on E85 ethanol/gasoline blend. All of the engines meet the stringent ULEV II emissions certification and run on regular grade gas. The 4.0L engine is paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission, but the 4.6L and 5.7L both drive 6-speed automatics.

All Tundras have a rear suspension design that maintains a level ride height even with a full load; underneath are fully boxed frame rails in front and rolled C-channel members in back. When properly equipped, the Tundra can tow nearly 11,000 pounds.

The Tundra has more standard safety features than most of its competitors. Front-seat side airbags are standard on all models, along with roll-sensing side-curtain airbags and new front seat knee airbags. Also, 4-wheel disc brakes with vehicle stability control are standard on all Tundras. New this year is standard trailer sway control programming and brake override technology, which use the truck's stability control system to detect unintended side-to-side movement at the rear wheels while towing and uses the truck's anti-lock brake system to help counteract yaw caused by unwanted trailer motion. A trailer brake controller allows the driver to control the amount of brake boost applied to the trailer's electric brakes when the driver applies the vehicle's brakes.

While the safety features are standard across the line, the Tundra ranges from basic to very luxurious inside depending on the trim level, starting at the very frugal base model and going all the way up to the very well-appointed Limited.

Different Tundra models are available, including a new "Work Truck" no frills trim level that's available in standard cab or double cab versions. It features plain black bumpers, vinyl seats, rubber floor mat and manual-adjustable mirrors. Limited Double Cab and CrewMax get equipment upgrades such as power front seats, 6-disc CD changer, heated mirrors and mud guards. The Limited model includes all the interior luxury features offered in full-size SUVs, such as dual-zone climate control, heated power front seats and a 440-watt JBL surround-sound system. Finally, a Platinum edition available on the Limited CrewMax features power memory, navigation, sunroof, unique 20-inch wheels, wood and chrome interior accents and "Platinum" badging.

Inside, all models feature a tilt/telescopic steering wheel, door handles and control knobs large enough to be operated with gloves. The glovebox is designed to be big enough to hold a Thermos and the center console is large enough for a laptop or for file storage. Interior power outlets stay live for two hours after the ignition is switched off.

A TRD (Toyota Racing Development) Off-Road Package is optional on the Tundra, bringing an off-road suspension, off-road tires, skid plates, fog lamps and more. New TRD Sport and TRD Rock Warrior packages include special color-keyed bumpers. Rock Warrior also gets a special TRD-tuned off-road suspension and both offer unique wheels.

Lost 54 lbs and 43 total inches!

Nobody could ever accuse Jen Kruczek of being a couch potato.

She plays softball. Flag football. Indoor soccer.

She loves boxing. Tennis. Swimming. Yoga. Running.

“I hate having to choose,” she laughs. “I want to do it all!”

Jen’s athleticism had always been key to her identity. There was just one little problem: By the time she turned 40, her performance just wasn’t what it used to be.

Her joints felt stiffer. She tired more easily. She couldn’t always follow through on her softball coach’s suggestions.

And a series of five hamstring injuries in a year and a half didn’t help.

Nothing in Jen’s life had given her the same pleasure and sense of fulfillment as movement. And now, movement was becoming… complicated.

The prospect of losing mobility and strength was so upsetting that it forced Jen to ask herself a difficult question.

Could her struggles in the gym and on the field be traced to the 40 or 50 extra pounds she was carrying?

Weight had always been an issue for Jen. She’d try a diet, lose fifteen or twenty pounds, go off the diet, and quickly regain. It was demoralizing. She was tired of living that way.

Even worse was the frustration she felt. She wasn’t ignorant. She understood the basics of healthy eating.

Jen knew she needed a true game changer. Reading about Precision Nutrition Coaching’s daily lessons appealed to her orderly, organized side. It seemed like the kind of program that could help her trade less healthy habits for better ones… for good.

Now, she’s not only injury-free, but she’s also performing at a higher level.

“That extra weight was dragging me down. Now it’s gone.”

Jen lives on Cape Cod. On the beach, she’s seen older people who can barely walk in the heavy sand or who struggle to stand up once they’ve settled themselves on a beach towel.

“Thinking about my future, I didn’t want to end up that way,” she says. Instead, she wanted to be like the vibrant 70-year-old who plays on her softball team. Or the women in their sixties who still play soccer with her.

“I want to become that active older person.” Precision Nutrition gave her the tools to make her dream a reality.

Her advice for anyone chasing their own transformation dream?

“Give yourself a year,” she says. “And trust the process.”

$25,000 Grand Prize Winner: Nathaniel

Lost 54 lbs and 42 total inches!

At 35, Nathaniel knew he had a weight problem.

Indeed, he’d had a weight problem for most of his life.

In 4th grade, he already weighed in at 140 pounds. By high school graduation, he was over 275. And in his early thirties, he’d really let himself go.

Still, he figured he was healthy. He was young, and he’d always been active.

Then, he suddenly found himself in an emergency room waiting for a heart catheterization test. His blood pressure medication wasn’t working. “I failed a stress test,” he recalls. “They had to stop it partway through.”

Hang on, he thought.

“If I don’t make a change, I could die soon.”

Nathaniel credits a friend for guiding him toward Precision Nutrition. “He was a finalist himself a few years back. He knew the company was reliable.”

With his friend’s recommendation, Nathaniel committed himself to the program.

Right from the start, he treated it like a second job. He completed every lesson. Showed up for every workout. Put himself on the line by telling almost everybody he knew about his weight loss plan.

He even promised his kids that if he won, he’d take them to Disneyland. “When a 6-year-old is depending on you, that’s a lot of pressure,” he laughs.

The process wasn’t always easy.

While his family and friends supported him, they didn’t share his goal, so sometimes they’d be eating his favorite foods while he opted for a Tupperware container filled with something lighter.

Even on family vacations, he planned ahead of time and sometimes even brought along his own food to ensure he would have healthy options to choose from.

“They thought I was crazy,” he remembers.

And while he looked forward to exercising most days, there were inevitably some afternoons when he just didn’t feel like going to the gym. On top of that, he had to find ways to work around significant injuries at two different points during the program.

First, he tore his plantar fascia, the connective tissue that spans the bottom of the foot. This confined him to a walking boot and temporarily put an end to any running.

Since running was out of the question, he turned to rowing for aerobic conditioning. But rowing turned out to be a physical and mental trial.

When he started, he could barely squeeze out 11 minutes on the machine. That wasn’t exactly encouraging.

Still, there’d been signs of improvement, and those small progressions were enough to spark his hope and keep him going.

Take his hypertension, for example. About four months into coaching, around the time of that first injury, he started experiencing some weird symptoms again.

Turns out, his blood pressure wasn’t spiking. Instead, it was bottoming out! He’d improved so much that his doctors had to reduce his medications.

And by Nathaniel’s eleventh month—when he tore his biceps tendon playing touch football—eleven minutes of rowing was just a warm up for the two hours he could now sustain.

Not only that, but he’d also been off all blood pressure medications for six months.

Changing the way he ate and moved was only the start.

“I learned to see setbacks as challenges, not excuses,” he explains.

As Nathaniel’s health improved and his mindset shifted, his whole family took note. The changes in his mentality rubbed off.

Today, his wife is taking steps to pursue an important dream of her own.

His older daughter works out with him at the gym.

And his younger daughter’s getting ready to pack for Disneyland.

“I look like a different person now,” Nathaniel reflects. “But the outward changes are nothing compared to the inner changes. I’ve strengthened my mind even more than my body.”

Best of all, he’s healthy.

“At the beginning, this goal seemed so lofty, so unattainable,” he says. Now, he’s eager to tackle new challenges in every facet of his life.

Trying to put my experience this year into words is difficult for me. Tires/Wheels - Vibration Shortly After Tires Are Mounted on Rim

Subject: Vibration Shortly After Tires are Mounted/Preventing Vibration from Wheel Slip (Tire Sliding on Wheel)

Models:

2013 and Prior GM Passenger Cars and Trucks

Information: Vibration Caused by Wheel Slip

A customer concern of vibration shortly after having a tire or tires mounted may be caused by slippage of the tires on the wheels, placing the

imbalance point of the tire away from the weight location.

Wheel slip is a condition that occurs when the tire slips and rotates on the wheel during acceleration or braking. This can cause the assembly to

become imbalanced and result in the customer returning with a vibration from the tire/wheel assembly. Wheel slip is most common on clear coated

or chrome wheels with very smooth bead seat areas, but may also occur on other alloy or steel wheels. Most slippage occurs immediately after

mounting.

Using preferred tire mounting lubricants and proper lubricant application techniques can prevent wheel slip from occurring.

Wheel slip normally occurs for the following reasons:

- Excessive amount of lubricant used or lubricant applied in the wrong locations.

- Improper lubricants, non-preferred lubricants or improperly diluted lubricants may contain excessive moisture or components that do not dry

sufficiently, resulting in an interface between the tire and rim that is excessively slippery.

Checking For Wheel Slip

Vehicles that return immediately with ride disturbances and out of balance assemblies should be checked for wheel slip. Wheel slip can be checked

by placing a temporary mark on the tire at the valve stem. After driving the vehicle, if the wheel slip is less than one inch, then wheel slip is probably

not contributing to a ride disturbance. When wheel slip is greater than one inch, and you felt a ride disturbance on the test drive, then wheel slip may

be causing the vibration.

Note

This diagnostic test will only be effective if the vehicle has been serviced within the last couple of hours.

Best Practices to Eliminate Wheel Slip

Wheel slip can usually be prevented with the proper application of tire mounting lubricants in a controlled and consistent manner. The following are

some recommended best practices for eliminating wheel slip.

1. Prior to the tire installation, clean the tire changer's wheel-contact parts of any excess lubrication, dirt or grime.

2. Clean the bead seat areas of the wheel of any leftover lubricant used to demount the tire.

3. Inspect the tire to be installed and clean any manufacturing related lubricants from the bead area as necessary. Use an approved rubber

cleaning fluid that would commonly be used during the tire repair process.

4. Do not use products containing silicone, alcohol, petroleum based products, solvents or corrosives for cleaning or lubrication.

5. Lubricate the tire and wheel as shown in the following illustrations. To eliminate wheel slip, the tire beads should normally only be lubricated

from "heel to toe." Lubricant applied outside the heel to toe zone will cause the tire to have reduced grip on the wheel and increase the

likelihood of slippage. When lubricating the wheel, lubricate the safety humps, leave the rim flanges dry and lubricate the drop center area

only for difficult to mount tires.

6. When additional lubrication is required during mounting to prevent tire damage, the excess lubricant should be wiped or cleaned from the tire

bead area and the wheel bead seat area before inflating to seat the beads.

7. The mounting process must be completed within 10 minutes of the application of the mounting lubricant. Evaporation of the mounting

lubricant after 10 minutes may prevent proper bead seating.

8. Inflate the tires to 275 kPa (40 psi) when mounting, then reduce the air pressure to the desired operating pressure.

9. Place a temporary mark on the sidewall of the tire at the valve stem.

10. Rebalance the tires and mount on the vehicle.

11. Park the vehicle for one hour to allow the lubricant to evaporate.

Note

Technicians should not brake or accelerate quickly when moving vehicles from the hoist to the parking lot.

12. Test drive the vehicle to confirm the ride disturbance has been corrected. Confirm that the mark on the tire is still aligned with the valve stem

locations and remove the temporary mark. The above photo shows the possible amount of slip.

Preferred Lubricant Recommendations

To minimize rim slip, always use commercially available lubricants made for bead seating to assist in tire mounting. Paste type lubes are

recommended because the application can be better controlled and paste type lubes will not drip onto areas that should not be lubricated. If

lubricants that require dilution are used, be sure to carefully follow the lubricant manufacturer's instructions. Under diluted mixtures will not dry

soon enough, which may cause wheel slip. Over diluted mixtures will dry too fast and may hamper proper bead seating.

Suitable paste lubricants include Rema Tip-Top(R) Tire Universal Mounting Paste if available in your area, Kent Xtra-Seal(TM)

Euro-Paste Mounting Compound or equivalent. The Kent product is distributed nationally. Contact 1-800-YES-KENT for additional

information on this product.

Important

When mounting the tires, rubber lubricant must be used. Also, the vehicle should not be driven aggressively (hard acceleration or braking)

for up to 24 hours after tire mounting to allow the lubricant to dry. Failure to do so may cause the tire to slip on the rim. This condition will

affect wheel balance, which could result in a vibration.

Lubricate the tire as shown in the following illustration. To eliminate wheel slip, the tire beads should normally only be lubricated from "heel to toe."

Lubricant applied outside the heel to toe zone will cause the tire to have reduced grip on the wheel and increase the likelihood of slippage.

The following diagram illustrates the recommended lubrication of the wheel to prevent wheel slip. Lubricate the safety humps. Leave the rim flanges

dry. Lubricate the drop center area only for difficult to mount tires.

Customer Notice

It is advisable especially for customers who are waiting for their vehicle during servicing be made aware that recently mounted tires should not be

driven on in an aggressive manner. It may take up to 24 hours before the lubricant is completely dry and tires achieve maximum adherence to the

rims. No matter the style of driving exhibited during the drying period, no air loss, or other detrimental attributes are possible from this condition.

Wheel slip relative to the rim is merely a customer dissatisfier due to the potential to induce undesired vibration.
