💞what's the most important part of a story for you? the plot, the characters, the worldbuilding, the technical stuff (grammar etc), the figurative language

I'd say the relationship between the characters is always my first priority - my fics typically aren't the most high concept (though I have one hopefully coming this year that challenges that a bit) so they kind of live and die by if the relationship is entertaining and most importantly, believable. Something interesting (?) about my process is once I have a basic plot spark, I immediately plan the smut (and there's even been times when I have the smut idea first and then build a story to facilitate that scene). I love using sex scenes as a way to show the inner workings and complexity of a relationship and so planning the smut early on helps me determine what kind of dynamic that couple is going to have outside of the bedroom. So I guess the relationship and figuring out how to portray that via smut is most important.

🦋what are you most insecure about when you post a fic?

Um, everything? 😂 Honestly I think the thing I get the most insecure about is I'm always afraid no one will read it! I'm not typically concerned about whether or not people like it, art is subjective and I'm at the point where as long as I like the story, I'm happy with it. But still, the goal of sharing is ultimately for other people to engage, so when it feels like that's not happening, it can be kind of nerve-wracking and sometimes discouraging.

Sharing fic now is also a lot different than when I started in 2020 - 5SOS Tumblr was a lot more active but especially the writing community, I swear there was at least one fic a day being posted, if not more. Feedback was relatively instant and plentiful and the main method of delivery was via reblogs (and tags) and every reblog essentially gave the fic new life and opportunity for more feedback because it was being put on people's dashes constantly. For whatever reason, reblogs are a rarity now (for example, my latest fic has 315 notes but only 33 of those are reblogs) so the amount of feedback I receive has also greatly diminished - obviously less reblogs mean less tags but also the post is getting seen by less people because it's not being shared. So it's harder to tell if people are actually reading the stories or not because there's less conversation about them. You used to be able to tell if a story was popular because it would be inescapable the first few days after it posted because everyone was reblogging it. Now people just stuff it in their likes so it feels like a lot less of a communal experience, I guess? So that's something I've had to get used to and learn not to let that "reception" dictate whether or not I consider a fic successful or not.

🍉in what ways has writing helped you process trauma and/or navigate through your own life?

It's funny, this is something I've actually discussed in therapy before (oh are we not all talking to our therapists about our fan fic adventures? 😂). I grew up in a very conservative, religious family and while I felt like I worked hard at the time to maintain a healthy attitude towards sex, my body and my view of myself as a woman (both independently and in a relationship), a significant part of my adult life has still been spent sifting through the subconscious shame and overarching trauma that resulted from spending my formative years in such a repressive environment.

Something I particularly struggled with was fear of being judged or perceived differently if I was open about anything regarding my sexual self. I wasn't prudish by any means in my private life but basically I got too good at masking that side of myself, essentially living dual lives, that my instinct was still to publicly project manufactured purity and shame even when I didn't need to anymore.

Even when I first joined Tumblr, I was hesitant to interact with the fics I was reading because it felt embarrassing being publicly associated with sexual content. And look at me now! Known for writing thirsty tags and smutty fic 😂 In all seriousness, writing and sharing the types of stories I write, plus having open discussions about them with others (with both commenters and friends), has been an immensely healing and rewarding part of my Tumblr journey that I really did not expect but am entirely grateful for.

8. underrated drawing you did

undoubtedly this drawing of link i did when the botw2 trailer dropped. was rather let down by the reception, but i realize the tag was popular at the time so it probably just got buried 🥲

21. what do you want to work on the most next

ooooo you know i’m not sure!! i need another ongoing project to latch onto, but i don’t think i’ve found it just yet. i do want to draw more 5sos in the coming year! i’m also hoping to do a daily challenge in february, if life allows it 😌

24. what do you like most about your art style

this is such an interesting question, because it’s not necessarily something i’ve ever actively thought about before? but i think i really like my coloring, both in how i choose colors and how my brushstrokes look. i think it’s one of the more identifiable qualities to my art style, and i’m proud of that!

25. best advice youve recieved this year or something new you learned about art

i finally started to figure out how to do backgrounds/background perspective! most of the new stuff i learned was from sinix on youtube. he has great tutorials on specific anatomy, as well as things like shape design and shadows. also, this isn’t from this year in the least (more accurately, it’s from 10 years ago when i first got into art) but it remains the most helpful tutorial on color theory i’ve ever encountered, and i feel like i learn something new every time i revisit it.

So, how about how Metroid Dread handled Adam Malkovich, huh? (Spoiler thoughts and Other M negativity under the cut)

The thing about Adam is that I genuinely really like him in Metroid Fusion. He’s an interesting character who has a fun dynamic with Samus that you can read in several ways, as well as being the source of a lot of background worldbuilding for the Federation at large.

So, I absolutely hated him in Other M. Not just because he was a dickhead to Samus, but because, fundamentally, he was not the Adam I knew from Fusion. Adam’s character assassination in Other M pissed me off almost as much as Samus’ character assassination.

Since Dread is a post-Fusion game, out of universe it had to deal with two completely different characters sharing the same name, and that’s a tall order. This was one aspect I was really worried about, and I intentionally looked up how the game handled both Samus and Adam before I played it. I didn’t want to be burned again, you know?

So, I knew going in what the deal with Adam and Raven Beak was, and I think that helped me enjoy the game more than if I hadn’t. As “Adam” started getting more dickish, I probably would’ve just sighed and had grumbly Other M memories: “Well, at least they got Samus right this time.” 

On the other hand, I think it was a hilarious and even brilliant move, at least for Dread itself. I think the pop cultural osmosis image of Adam - the basic idea that players who are coming to Dread as their first Metroid are going to have - is based more than anything on his horrible Other M incarnation, so “Adam” being kind of a jerk wouldn’t set off any alarms for new players.

And for series veterans like me who didn’t like how he was portrayed in Other M? Going in, we’re in a kind of limbo where we’re not sure what the heck Nintendo is even doing with this series anymore, so him being written as a jerk would have been somewhere along the spectrum of annoying to infuriating, but because of the cynical expectation that he was going to be written out of character, his out of character behaviour also wouldn’t have been suspicious.

I’m sure Samus knew much, much earlier than even the savviest player did.

I do hope Adam can get a chance to redeem himself in another Metroid game, if we get one, but as is him being impersonated by the villain was probably the best thing the game could have done given everything out of universe surrounding him. What little we saw of the real Adam encourages me; him snarking that the Federation isn’t paying Samus enough was great, as was him staying completely calm when Samus barged into the ship all Metroided up after several hours of no contact and with a Chozo X copy onboard.

I don’t think I’m done talking about Other M!Adam and Raven Beak.

The more I think about it, the more encouraged I am by Dread’s story. I have a few nitpicks, perhaps, but on the broad strokes level Dread seems to prove to me that the reaction to Other M was really and truly taken to heart, and that they understand enough of why people were so angry to not do it again. The way Samus overcomes Raven Beak feels, in a way, like a heartfelt apology.

One of the central failures of Other M for me was that it asked us to buy its version of Adam as a good father figure for Samus. He isn’t. In so, so many ways, he really, really isn’t. But the game doesn’t seem to know that, and Samus outright thanks him right after the scene where he shot her in the back because he didn’t think she’d listen if he talked to her as an adult, which this version of Samus actually might not have.

Raven Beak, on the other hand? The game, and Samus, is completely and fully aware he’s a terrible father/father figure. Samus doesn’t even give him the time of day: her reaction to him trying to pull rank as one of her sources of Chozo DNA is, basically, “eat a missile, asshole”. And when he lords himself over her at the end of his boss fight, belittling her efforts and rubbing in that he has already won, her reaction to that is to get a second wind and completely demolish him while belting out a roar of righteous fury.

Imagine that horrible Sector Zero scene from Other M if Samus had reacted to OM!Adam the way she reacted to Raven Beak.

I don’t think I’ve created much but these are my picks in no apparent order:

- La Petite Mort (my first Michael fic, this baby was really hard to write and it took me a couple of months (I think) to finish it, but it was worth it in the end; it also taught me a few things about myself I didn’t know before)

- Glass Figurines (one of my favorite Luke fics where I focused on a lot of details because that’s how I am irl too; the whole point of that writing exercise was to paint you the picture in every miniscule detail without sounding like a medical examiner)

- Resurfacing (or the Michael fic I thought I’d never (be able) to write; when the gender-neutral challenge started, I told myself that I was gonna stay out of it because I just can’t get out of my binary way of writing and I honestly think that sometimes it’s better to just be the reader and not the writer when you know that you can’t deliver 100%; however, the idea came to me out of nowhere and I wrote this thing in one afternoon (granted it’s not very big) which is extremely asymptomatic of me; it helped that I could channel a bit of my own trauma to produce something euphoric and overall “happy”, so I consider it a big accomplishment)

- Moon bois (or the edit where I remembered that I was the Queen of Paint back in the day and I could play with a lot of photos as long as I had a black background)

- the Mashton/Muke mashups (or the edits where I first started experimenting with layering and I really liked it; I was finally able to make an edit of my lanes showing them as one)

I guess a few honorable mentions would have to be my 5sos x music eras, 5sos x dictionary and my Luke and Ash edits, for no apparent reasons other than the fact I find them to be very cool.

How To Do An Interview

A/N: So here’s that angry Ash blurb for y’all. Special thanks to that anon for the context!

Content: Lots of swearing. One angry man.

And away, and away we go!

I slammed my front door, getting a smug satisfaction at how the windows rattled with the force of it.

That felt good, but not good enough. So, finally, in the safety of my home, in total solitude, I screamed. The angry yell echoed around me as I let loose, not stopping until I ran out of breath.

I took in big breaths, gulping down the air, ready to carry on screaming until I lost my voice. That's when I noticed a pair of eyes peering at me from over the couch. I shot my girlfriend an angry smirk before I screamed again. I didn't give a damn what she thought. I was angrier than I'd ever been, and damn it, I wanted to scream about it. So I was.

More of her appeared from where she'd been hiding behind the couch as she sat up on her knees, her own mouth opening to yell with me. 

"Wait, why are we yelling?" she asked, breathless.

"Because I am pissed!" I shouted at her, my voice already sounding hoarse.

She cowered back behind the couch, only letting me see her eyes, which were wide with terror. "Oh..."

"Am I scaring you?" I asked even though I didn't really care about the answer. I was about one scream away from putting my fist through a wall. But, a small part of me was still being rational. I could lose my voice, but I needed my hands. And I truly didn't want to scare her. I knew I looked intimidating, but I tried really hard not to be.

Her hand came up to show her thumb and index finger dangerously close together, followed the lie of "maybe a little."

I let my air out in a huff, running my hands through my hair. "I'm sorry, baby." I apologized, my anger subsiding to exhaustion as I walked over to sit with her. "I'm just..."

"Just nothing," she told me. "You are pissed. Not just. Are."

"Alright, I'm pissed," I admitted.

"What about? Talk to me, Fletch," her soft voice urged.

"It's those damn interviews!" I growled, my fists clenching, as I grew angry again. We'd been on the road for close to 3 months, promoting our new music and tour, doing interview after interview, each one progressively worse than the last.

“What about them?"

"They don't take us seriously! They ask about the girls and the parties! They ask if we've checked out this or that bar and if we woke up with someone in our bed! We're doing a fuckin promo and they don't give a single fuck about the music or the process! No! They only care about pleasing the fuckin tabloids! How are the 4 Aussies adjusting to their celeb status? Any coke habits, boys? Boys! Can you believe that shit?! I'm twenty-fuckin-four! I've been in the public eye since I was seven-fuckin-teen! I'm more than adjusted and I'm a fuckin man! I am a serious musician who is proud of his accomplishments as a musician! I want to talk about that! Not this immature little kid BULLSHIT!"

"Whoa..."

"Yeah," I huffed, feeling only marginally better.

Her eyes lit up in sudden excitement. "I have an idea!" she squealed, getting up to dash around the house.

"What?" I giggled, watching her go from 0 to 100.

"Go get changed," she said, throwing a water bottle at me. "Something kinda nice."

"What are you planning, gorgeous girl?"

"Trust me, Fletch," she answered with a kiss. "But first, scream with me one more time. Or at least pose like you are." she told me, brandishing her phone at me.

"Alright," I giggled. Then, I let loose another scream, her screaming right along as she snapped a series of photos until we were breathless and giggly.

"Now, go get ready."

A half hour later, I bounded downstairs, excited to see what she had planned.

I giggled as I saw our transformed living room. She had brought out the back drop from the Cocktail Chats and was peering through a video camera on a tripod, making sure everything was in the shot. "Luke, lift the mic higher, there ya go," she was saying, "Mike, say something."

"Uh, this is weird. Ash, your girl's weird mate," Mike said.

"Uh, this is weird. Ash, your girl's weird, mate," Mike's voice said again from the video. "Perfect!" she cheered, happy with her work. "Alright, places, men. It's showtime!"

"What are you doing?" I asked in her ear. My mates were dressed up, clearly just as lost as I was with whatever she was planning, but going along because you just didn’t say no to this girl. And whatever she planned was going to be big based on her set up and the fact that she herself had changed into a black pencil skirt and white blouse; her glasses perched on her nose giving her a hot librarian vibe.

“Giving you the interview you all deserve," she winked, her heels clicking as she took a seat in the armchair. "Have a seat, Fletch."

I giggled and took a seat with my mates on my couch. This was gonna be good.

"Thank you for tuning into another episode of Galcal Chats. I'm your hostess, Galcal Irwin, and I'm here with the men of 5SOS. Gentlemen, how we feeling today?" she started, once the camera was rolling.

"Little confused," Calum answered.

"Yeah, what the hell, Y/N?" Mike asked.

"Scared? Ash...?" Luke spoke up, shooting me a worried glance.

"Much better now, Galcal,” I giggled, happy to play along with her game.

"Awesome!" she said brightly. "So, you all just got back from promoting your single Easier and your upcoming tour with The Chainsmokers. Tell me, how was that?"

"Tiring," Calum answered. 

"Nice," Luke put in.

"Really cool. We haven't done much since we got back from our Meet You There tour. It was nice to be back on the road,” Mike added, giving her more of an answer.

"Mmm," she nodded. "And the upcoming tour- World War Joy with The Chainsmokers- how's that? I know a lot saw it as a shock. How are you hoping this tour helps showcase how far you've all come- both as a rock group and individually?"

"Yeah," I spoke up. "You know our music took a new direction with our last album. It's something we're still exploring and establishing. So, when The Chainsmokers asked us to collab with them on Who Do You Love, we jumped at the chance to keep challenging ourselves. We're still working on our new album, but we love touring, so when they asked for us to join them on World War Joy, it seemed like the right move for us."

"Right! The new album! You already released the single Easier. Are you planning to release any more singles?"

"We're actually planning to release a new single here soon," Luke confessed.

"Ooo! You heard it here first, folks!" Y/N grinned at the camera.

She continued to interview us for the better part of an hour, finally asking the questions we'd been dying to answer. Not a single mention of girls, or wild nights. Not a single usage of the word "boys". Just pure interest in our art.

“Alright, that's all the time we have for today. 5SOS, it's been a pleasure. Best of luck with your upcoming tour. Let's chat sometime!"

"Thanks for having us, Y/N," Calum said.

"Yeah, this was fun," Luke told her.

"You're so weird," Mike teased her.

"Love you, too." she grinned, getting up to press her face close to the camera. "And that's how you do an interview, FUCKERS!" she laughed, sticking out her tongue and flipping off the camera for good measure.

"Hey, no swearing!" I told her light-heartedly, feeling loads better.

"This guy, am I right?" she told the camera, jerking a thumb at me. "Chat soon, love y’all,'' she signed off, shutting off the camera.

"Look at how popular we are," she told me later, showing me her phone.

She had posted the picture of us screaming with the caption “Talked with this one and the rest of @5sos​ about their art! Check it out here!” with the link to the video underneath it.

Both her post and the video had blown up-comments ranging from how finally so mine was taking us seriously, love over her sass, and general freaking out-mostly about Luke's bombshell of a new single.

"And that's how you do an interview, FUCKERS!" we yelled happily at each other, before finishing it off with one more scream for good measure.
