Welp a little later than usual but here I am! And uh apparently I added another Christmas fic to the pile because why not lmao but it's just a real short one and I'm aiming for it to be posted this week. 🫡

He was just about to decide what kind of disgustingly greasy takeout food to order, when the door clicked open behind his back.

He turned to see— Eddie. Because of course it was Eddie.

“Hey,” he said gently, shutting the door behind himself and Buck knew it was a little irrational right now, but it still warmed his heart that Eddie came and went like this; that he knew no matter what, he was always welcome here.

“Hi.” Buck gave him a weak smile over the brim of his beer bottle, unsure of what to expect.

“I just wanted to see if you were okay.”

“Why, did uh did I not seem okay?” Buck scoffed, just falling short of casual.

Eddie averted his gaze almost guiltily before pinning Buck with a knowing look. “No.”

“Yeah, I guess that’s fair.” Buck took a long swig of his beer with a grimace.

“You know it doesn’t change anything, right?”

“Uh no, Eddie, I really don’t know that.” Buck drawled and put the bottle down on the counter top with a loud clink.

“Eddie, you’re leaving the 118. That- that literally changes everything!” He spread his arms widely, as if he could indicate just how much of that everything covered.

Frumpy sweatpants, a long woolen jacket — in this weather? — with at least a dozen pockets, a backpack that was literally hanging on by a thread, and he had clearly just come from the cafe, a crumbly buttery scone in one hand and a hot coffee in the other.

He couldn’t possibly be her TA. She was doomed.

Well now a days I just buy 510 thread vape cartridges. But I prefer to smoke bud/flower. I like a bong or blunt. Obviously don’t smoke if you’re under 18 but I’m not your dad, yadda yadda. If you don’t wanna learn to roll blunts just go to a smoke shop and buy some raw cones they go for ~$6-11(CAD) depending on the size you get and where you live. Just pack em with bud and light up. Smoke responsibly, don’t smoke a whole lot at once. Like a few puffs off a standard cone is plenty for someone who’s never smoked before. Edibles give you a body high, smokin gives you a head high. If doing edibles start with 10mg and wait 20-30 mins before taking any more. Be aware weed can mix with medications and can worsen psychotic symptoms in some people. trying to frame it up without writing a bad essay but pharsalia chat in the household this week has mostly been about how disorienting (& disoriented) the sea battle is

it starts out clearly enough—battle formation, sequence of events—but then something happens Wrong (Brutus offers his broadside as a trap), and abruptly everything dissolves into this directionless, disjunctive textual melee. the helmsman dies (of course). he can’t be replaced. we’re sliding around in the gore and we don’t know which ship is which or even which way is up: we move from scene to scene without an understanding of their spatial or temporal relation to one another: forward motion fails; it’s unclear where we are or are going. we tread water. corpses stack.* it’s senseless (we lose sense) and pointless (this is, after all, not the battle that matters, as we’ve just been reminded at 297). we’re swimming blind and going nowhere—  

and in the midst of this there are all these things performing the wrong function: stately ships are passive traps; ramming beaks pierce flesh instead of wood; flesh protects shield; grapples sever arteries; the sea is invisible/wood/bodies. drowning men burn to death. these ships are barely ships to begin with (510), and now they’re being stripped apart for improvised weapons: men are destroying the thing that’s keeping them alive. & there are people desperately attempting to assert their correct roles and relations (brother shielding brother; father dying before son; soldier killing enemy), but the whirlpool force of the battle is against them, and even their awful successes feel subverted. the ultimate horror of the unidentifiable corpses on the beach (which restates an image from the sullan proscriptions in book 2, 166, see also 188) muddles roman and massilian so that this too becomes overtly internecine: this is violence built on defective relationships, and though individuals attempt to assert appropriate order, they consistently fail—

and then it's over in a line and a half. a schoolboy summing-up: caesar wouldn't be so openly or grandly self-congratulatory but the echo is there in the terseness, maybe. the victor takes control of the narrative, perhaps, or we're simply invited to consider how all that gore fits into an annalistic line or two.

((*i’ve been struggling to articulate the ways in which this specific stacking-up of corpses feels different from what we get in the Aeneid (etc.); don’t know that i have a handle on it yet, but it does. these are bodies with names, not men with bodies; there’s so rarely anything of their lives in their deaths. probably there's papers on this i should read.))

postscript: jwj has a note about the names in this sequence coming from Aeneid XI, but unless i am just doing a bad job of reading, they…don’t? or at least not directly. Tyrrhenus appears, and Catus is close enough to Catillus—otherwise the sources are elsewhere. it’s still an interesting connect because of the image of the “waves” of cavalry at Aen. 11.625. also because it’s a nice example of how a battle sequence usually works, with a focus on one character or another as they move through or past their series of vignettes—a thread which the sea battle is entirely lacking. there’s a lot of back-and-forth, there, but it never feels stuck. emphasizes for me how intentionally murky and chaotic the sea battle is.

Anger—diffuse and dull now—billowed through Caranthir’s soul like a pinkish mist.

At times, it felt as if all the other emotions which he’d once been able to feel had been displaced by that singular fire which kept his heart beating by sheer, brute force.

His fingers tightened around worn, threadbare fabric, and he scowled ferociously.

He’d tried to throw away the ghastly ragdoll countless times—it barely resembled anything at all, let alone the cat it had meant to represent upon its creation, and he hated how attached he was to the accursed thing.

For as long as he could remember, Tyelko had disliked him.

Of course, little ill-tempered, red-faced Morifinwë had not been worthy of the incandescent wrath or the formidable hatred of so tempestuous a soul—no, he’d grown up in the bitingly cold shadow of his older brother’s disdain.

Thus, the nameless lump of fabric—made of scraps from one of their father’s old mantles—had been the only gift Caranthir had ever received from Celegorm.

All the stitches were crooked, and the knobbly filling of discarded thread and whisps of clothes his brothers had outgrown had long since fallen out on account of the shoddy handiwork.

Irascible and impatient by nature, Caranthir had decided to take it apart and make it anew at least as often as he’d considered throwing it into the flames, but, ultimately, he never had.

“It’s red, like you,” his sibling had crooned upon thundering into his room in a flurry of dead leaves and mud. “It can be your friend.”

Caranthir, who had gained respect but never love over the years, would have been mortified that he still yearned for friendship so desperately; alas, shame had been burned out of his being along with hope on the battlefield.

Innumerable were his allies; he was feared and esteemed in equal measures by his own kind as well as his trade partners, but none of these brave souls had ever held any real affection for him.

Except…

Despite the betrayals he’d perpetrated and endured, and which had hardened him into something as unrecognisable as the mangled toy he clasped against his aching chest, Haleth had smiled at him as if he wasn’t unlovely and bitter.

She’d been wrong, but that didn’t diminish the sense of wonder and awe that flooded Caranthir’s petrified heart whenever his thoughts but grazed the image of her boundless, reckless joy, etched indelibly onto the last remaining soft spot of his soul.

Wordlessly, he laid down his childhood comfort, a symbol of untarnished love that could never be unmade or marred by dark deeds and terrible times, on the wet earth under which rested the brittle bones of one he had cherished more than he’d ever confessed.

“I give to thee, Haleth of the Haladin, queen amongst mortals, the jealously guarded and honestly dismal craft of Turcafinwë Tyelkormo…along with the wretched soul of one you might have saved had your fate been a different one.”

Desolate and utterly alone, he turned and limped away, blind with tears.

I did it! It took me 1.5 years but my Mooncat shawl is done 🥰 blocking in half to save on space. I don't even want to do the math on how many stitches total this is considering the last row was 510 stitches and the bind off was double that... fingering weight yarn is lovely but it's definitely a labor of love. This yarn is a lovely soft wool blend too (from Ancient Threads Farm picked up at a fiber festival in '21), so it will be awesome for the office when I'm chilly!
