One of the many things I like about the Connie-laughing-at-Annie-eating-pie scene is how we get a brief glimpse of Armin's protective side free of his usual self-sacrificial tendencies.

Because he doesn't think of himself as someone who can protect others. Armin sees himself as weaker than everyone else, lacking the ability to be someone stronger (say Reiner for example) and more confident (say Jean) who can protect others much better. The fact is that he's always been very protective of everyone he cares about; it's only that this trait of his character tends to show up most often at the sacrificial end of the spectrum. I think it tends to draw our attention away from his protective nature and puts greater focus on how little he values his life instead.

We see him always trying to get the others out of danger, starting with getting Hannes to come rescue Eren and Mikasa when Shiganshina fell, convincing the garrison not to kill Eren (tho his idea in this situation was to put himself directly in front of the cannons), sending Mikasa off in Trost with his blades, punching Eren for Mikasa, putting himself in front of Muller's guns at the end, so on and so forth etc etc, there are a million situations honestly---and in all of them, he tries to protect the others the only way he thinks he's capable of: by being the bait.

Which is why it always makes me so happy to see the pie scene, where you have a starving Annie stuffing her cheeks with pie, Connie making fun of her, and Armin's immediate reaction is to put himself between her and his harmless friend and indignantly yell, "She hasn't eaten in four years Connie, stop laughing at her!"

(Like, nevermind the fact that he's seeing Annie "alive" after four years, his girl's honour comes first lol. I bet he thought: I must protecc her chipmunk cheeks).

For once we see him defending someone without offering himself up in the process. It's just such a wholesome moment where we get to know that he's naturally protective, and in a light-hearted situation that doesn't drag his self-loathing and insecurities to the surface, "sacrifice myself" isn't the damned first thing on his mind.

How many more traits we'd able to see, both new and existing ones in a different light, if he'd been able to live in a way that didn't constantly fuel his hatred for himself?

I wish I was one of those artists that can draw (and quickly) after I watch/read something really intense and cool. But no.

Instead of getting a crazed spike of inspiration, I need like a week to mentally recharge and look over my notes because I'm boring and I like 'completing' my interpretation before making anything based on it. But Arcane has so much to take note of. Too much, even. I might just have to raw dog it this time so I don't kms (joke. It's late.)

That ending was wild- a little weird even- and I felt many feelings, but it also hollowed my chest cavity of all emotion.

Anyways. Congrats to those fans. So sorry for those other fans.

after parsing through A Walk Amongst Tombstones I’m having so many fucking visceral thoughts about this sorry man. and it’s not worth it, he’s - he’s sappy, forced, fucked, centuries of natural selection disregarded for reckless survival, ostensibly inherently self-destructive. ostensibly, because Kakavasha is scared, chassis wrecked with shudders and lacquered in gold.

the line that gets me the most, though, is - “How could a weak person take such daring risks?” because I don’t know what he means to imply here. that a strong person would take such daring risks? maybe not the dichotomy; maybe a fool, maybe a sick gambler. over and over, maybe I’ve gone insane.

All or nothing. but you, you want to give everything. throw it all onto the table, smile insipid as you’ve learned to do. a sagacious merchant, this loquacious, ostentatious snake of a man, slick with sneers and extols. and the hand under the table clutches his chips for dear life. may all your schemes be concealed.

is this correct enough? I don’t know if it’s for care, but Kakavasha might want to be seen. does it help enforce that iconographic version of him? Is it what Aventurine would do? not live, not preserve, but succeed in death. It was how it would always be. All or nothing. Aventurine needs to be reckless, he needs to smolder, he needs to grovel, he needs to give it all and lose it all and win, even if he isn’t at the table. even if his cards are dealt by an empty hand - he will win, and he won’t go home. he doesn’t have one.

In this dulcet dream of tenebrous schemes, he will go out with a bang. rain jewels, rain carmine blood. everyone will see. you’ll be the closing act, the final sacrifice. you will burn bright, and sear yourself as the forever capricious image in their heads, never known in the end, and you will want it that way. may your schemes forever be concealed; unto, and after, Death.
