This is totally my opinion on Harry, Invictus and the Commonwealth. I think Harry’s greatest loss was the loss of their roles of President and VP of the Commonwealth Trust. If they lose Invictus a great deal of their “Plans” i.e. the Plans others have for using them. All of this is connected as I think Harry’s handlers have their ultimate goal of getting Harry back into a role with the Commonwealth which would allow a great deal of movement and economic and military activities within those countries populations, by his handlers, as Harry would be the face to put out any complaints by those who are fighting the multi national corporations and Tech companies that are trying to make inroads into those countries, to get access to their resources, like oil, their land for development. They have to have a face that is innocuous and who appears to be aligned with the Commonwealth countries. That face, the face of Invictus, gives them Carte Blanche to get into the country, to sell it as a Goodwill operation for Veterans etc. Without Invictus they lose that free pass to go right to the top of the countries hierarchy of ministers, presidents, meet a former prince routine of his and then integrate his own “connections” to the country with the blessing of the leaders as they trust Harry. You know the Harry that keeps talking about “Africa, my true home, the place I am most comfortable” blah, blah. The desire of Invictus to get rid of Harry has proven to be very difficult as there are powerful corporations who want him there and it has nothing to do with athletes. With Harry as the face, and the beard for what is going on, he distracts from the real activities and puts out that she is 43% Nigerian (I am your sister, your mother, your wife blah, blah!). Don’t be fooled. This is all a charade, a scam…not by Harry, he is too stupid. Follow the money…this is all a distraction from issues like all the violence over there, i.e., African Parks. However, there is no question in my mind that H&M would do anything for money…greed is the touchstone here…and we already know that Harry would sell out his family for money. Can you imagine what he would do to an entity like the Commonwealth, that he does not care about at all? Keep your eyes on these two, they are more dangerous than they look, because stupid people are very dangerous, because they will do anything for money.

Hi Nonny,
Thank you for sharing your opinion with us. :)
A few points that I want to comment on:
The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust is a local, UK based charity that is supposed to support young people aged 18-35 across the Commonwealth, focusing on social entrepreneurs who have founded organisations to address problems in their communities. So far it has funded projects in the following countries:
3 in the UK, 5 in Uganda, 3 in Kenya, 3 in Cameroon, 2 in Malawi, 2 in South Africa, 2 in Rwanda, 2 in Tanzania, 2 in Nigeria, 1 in Ghana, 1 in Barbados, 1 in Guyana, 1 in St Lucia, 1 in Trinidad and Tobago, 1 in the Maldives, 1 in India, and 1 in Pakistan.
That is 32 projects across 17 countries (out of 56 Commonwealth Nations). This is a small charity. It does not have an international reputation and I doubt that most people outside the UK would know about it.
Harry’s job as President was to be president of a UK based charity. It had nothing to do with the organisation of the Commonwealth if Nations.
With respect to the Commonwealth of Nations, any prominent position within the organisation is either filled by a Head of State or voted on by all Heads of State. If Harry wants one of those positions, for which he is woefully unqualified, he would have to do a deal with enough of the 56 Heads of State to be voted into the position. I can’t see that happening, myself, especially as many of them want the position to go to another country’s Head of State after King Charles.
In addition, the Head of the Commonwealth has no power in any nation that makes up the Commonwealth. They can not be the face of anything except the Commonwealth as an organisation because they have no power in any of the individual countries (except for what is granted to them as Head of State of one or more of those countries).
Invictus is another matter, as Harry does have role as its patron that could include going to different countries to raise awareness/funds etc. Using that role for other motives makes sense.

2023 Wrap-up
I fulfilled 31 countries for the World Challenge this year, bringing my total up to 57 out of 208.
I also read about 14 other books that were repeats of countries, additional books in series, and ones I just randomly picked up, so something like 44 in total.
I also finished up all the backlog of countries I had rolled with the randomizer, so in the new year I will get to roll some new ones - yay, exciting.
So here are my top favorites from the year!
Top 5 reads in 2023
The Orphan Sky by Ella Leya
A really beautiful novel of a prodigy pianist coming of age in Soviet Azerbaijan. Musical prose and just breathtaking story.
2. The Exiles of Crocodile Island by Henye Meyer
This was an unexpectedly really good book that I was lucky to find for the tiny islands of São Tomé & Príncipe. Following a group of Jewish children forced to a Portuguese settlement. Really insightful characterization and lovely writing.
3. The Man Who Spoke Snakish by Andrus Kivirähk
Such a unique folklore-esque story by an Estonian author. A clash of modernity with ancient ways, and what gets forgotten.
4. The Key by Sara Elfgren & Mats Strandberg
Book 3 and finale of the Engelsfors series set in Sweden really brought the series to an amazing climax and gave us great character development. Also I think, the longest book I read this year.
5. The Wicked Bargain by Gabe Cole Novoa
Super fun queer pirate adventure! This was just so refreshing and comforting at the same time.
Honorable mentions:
All Our Hidden Gifts by Caroline O'Donoghue; Travelers Along the Way by Aminah Mae Safi; I Am Kavi by Thushanthi Ponweera; On the Edge of Gone by Corrine Duyvis; When a Bulbul Sings by Hawaa Ayoub
See my book review tag for all my reviews!

Paul Merton: ‘I stayed in one of the world’s worst hotels in China’
The comedian recalls terrible hotels in China, mishaps with malaria tablets and why he’s happiest holidaying in the UK
Interview by Nick McGrath
From The Sunday Times, 22nd February 2023
Paul Merton, 65, first performed at the Comedy Store in 1982 and since 1990 has been a fixture on the BBC’s Have I Got News for You, which returns this spring for its 65th series. He lives in London with his third wife, Suki Webster, his co-star on Channel 5’s Motorhoming with Merton & Webster
My first holiday of any substance was to a holiday camp in Hemsby, on the edge of the Norfolk Broads. I was eight years old and I loved it. I loved the space to run around and the people drinking beer and watching the shows in the ballroom. It felt idyllic.
I visited Ireland a couple of years later and got a lot of attention from my mum’s relatives, which was great for my performer’s ego. We saw the Ring of Kerry and I was charmed by the locals’ love of words and storytelling.
I spent most of the Eighties living in a bedsit earning very little money, so the first time I travelled further afield was in 1987, when I went all the way to Australia, with a heavy cold, to visit my girlfriend at the time.
The cheapest route was London to Sydney, via Athens and Singapore. In Athens, the complimentary coach from the hotel to the airport was full of boy scouts from Liechtenstein, who were on their way to Sydney for an international scouting jamboree. Being stared at by three-dozen hostile Liechtensteiner boy scouts is an experience I won’t forget.
After a two-day delay in Singapore, I eventually got to Sydney on Christmas Day with horrible jet lag and an even heavier cold, sat down to Christmas lunch in 35C heat, then fell asleep for 16 hours. It felt like I’d been kicked in the head by a horse.
I’d only been earning £30 a gig, sometimes £10 even, so holidays were rare. But as my career took off, I travelled more — including to Kenya in 1990, where I had a terrible experience with anti-malarial drugs. Back then you had to take a weekly and daily pill and I had a severe reaction to the weekly pill, but it took a while to work out what the problem was.
Each Friday, first in Kenya and then back home in London, I’d take this pill then start to hallucinate. I got these paranoid thoughts, where I believed I was being followed by the Freemasons and could predict the next song on the radio. Which I couldn’t.
I then went to places like St Lucia, but felt uncomfortable driving around in a rented Land Rover that probably represented what some people there might earn in half a lifetime. I felt the same visiting Cape Town.
I was lucky enough to film a couple of travel documentary series in India and China — and had totally contrasting experiences. The poverty was dramatic in India, but the people were polite and proud and when I returned to film in Mumbai, Delhi and Calcutta, they found our earnestly awful attempts at Bollywood improv hilarious and gave us multiple standing ovations.
I wouldn’t return on holiday to China, as the state interference leaves a bit of a nasty taste, as does the spitting. You literally pull up at some traffic lights and a woman in a very nice car will open her window and spit on the road. Everybody does it. Maybe a popular Chinese film star was a passionate spitter. Or perhaps Chairman Mao decreed it a healthy habit. Filming while surrounded on all sides by armed soldiers wasn’t massively relaxing either.
I also stayed in one of the world’s worst hotels in China. The foyer had a tarpaulin covered in some unusually dark stains and the room had bits of wall missing and stank of urine. I moved to a nearby hotel which was equally basic but clean, at least, although the TV was puzzling. It had a single channel showing a military man laden with medals berating a group of people for hours on end while they looked shamefaced.
I’d love to visit New Zealand as everyone raves about it. Another place I definitely won’t go back to is Tahiti, which everyone imagines is a South Sea paradise, but for me, it wasn’t. The hotel I stayed in was completely overrun by cats.
These days I prefer British holidays, as airports in the 21st century leave you with a low level of anxiety. My wife and I now love travelling round Britain in our motorhome, which is basically a hotel room on wheels. If we all could drop the idea that we have to go on holiday somewhere that has guaranteed sun, holidaying in this country has a lot going for it.
Paul and Suki will be speaking at the Caravan, Camping & Motorhome Show at the NEC Birmingham, which runs from February 21 to 26 (ccmshow.co.uk)

Chapter 5: The Flight
SA KA FETE RESTAURANT
ST. LUCIA
Everett didn't say a word as Test Subject Number Twenty went from timid and scared to open and talkative within five minutes. She explained everything, from being taken away at the age of six to becoming a lab rat and a trained soldier over a course of two decades. She left nothing out. She even explained being born with her unusual powers.
“That’s why the men wanted me,” she finished. “They’re training us as weapons of war in a dark and deadly game. No one knows what we’re training for. Boss thinks it’s some kind of apocalypse where the Earth will be consumed in the Age of Flame.”
“Wow.” Everett gaped, shaking his head in wonder. “So that’s why you’re so crazy powerful. You nearly gave me a migraine. What was that voice in my head anyway?”
“Telepathy,” Twenty explained. “I can connect to your subconscious and communicate with you without using my voice. It’s the perfect area of exploitation. Once Boss found out that there were children that possessed these gifts, he did everything he could to round us all up and hold us in the facility. Our powers have grown so strong now that the warriors of the Age of Flame will be completely taken off guard.”
“So let me get this straight, and correct me if I'm wrong,” Everett started. “Your hair changes color with whatever emotions you’re feeling, you can move stuff without touching it, and you can connect with people through their thoughts. Now you’re saying that you are actually one out of twenty other people with the same exact abilities, all of them innate, and you’re on the verge of some freak-show destiny to fight against a bunch of fire lords that are going to bring about the end of the world? And you’ve been training since you were SIX???”
“Yes,” Twenty replied. “That’s basically it. I haven't been in the outside world in twenty years. This is the first time I've escaped successfully.”
Everett had seen the marks on her body when she’d been changing in the bathroom. He’d gasped in horror at the sight, but he hadn’t been sure how to approach the issue. Now was a good time to bring it up.
“T, I saw the injuries,” he confessed. “You had bruises and burns all over your back. Was that from when you tried to get free before?”
“Yes,” Twenty nodded. “They punished me every time I attempted to escape. They placed tracking chips in all of us to keep us in line and make sure we didn’t disobey orders. Everything those two men told you was true. They tracked me here through the code on my chip. They aren’t police officers. They're agents with the International Weapons and Warfare Agency. That’s why I panicked when you tried to report me being abused. You’re risking your life. I can’t let that happen. These are powerful people working under the government.” Pause. “So now you know my story. As I said, you can do what you want. Call me crazy, kick me out of the restaurant, the choice is yours. I don’t have anywhere to go other than the facility anyway. I was practically raised there.”
Silence. For a long time, Twenty believed that he would kick her out. Her story was so crazy even she didn’t believe it at times. She waited for him to lose his temper, just like he had done on television, call her a freak, and hell, even insult her.
None came. Instead, he reached for his phone. She had placed it on the counter when he’d given her the towels and chef’s uniform. Her red hair instantly changed back to purple when she saw him unlock his screen.
“Don’t worry, I'm not reporting you,” he said in a monotone. He held the phone up to his ear.
“Hey, Cam?” All business now. “Hi. It’s Everett. Yeah. Uh, is the jet available, by any chance?” Pause. “No, I know I'm not supposed to be back yet. There’s been a change of plans. Can you inform my pilot that I need the jet over here ASAP? I'm at Sa Ka Fete. Tell him to meet us over at the St. Lucia Airport immediately.” Another pause. “Yes, I said ‘us.’ I'll explain later. Just let him know. Thanks.”
He hung up.
“What?” Twenty asked curiously. “Are you sending me away?”
“Yes, but not like you’re thinking,” he replied. “That was Cam, my assistant back in LA. I have a home there. I contacted him to send my private jet down here to fly us back. I'm not scheduled to shoot another episode of ‘Taste of the World’ until another couple of weeks. I've decided to come back early due to all the craziness here, and you’re coming with me. I've heard enough information about you to know it is not safe for you here. You are never going back to that godawful research lab. That hell is a prison.”
“Wait.” Twenty stopped him. “You’re...you’re not getting rid of me?”
“Hell, no!” Everett responded quickly. “I'm not letting anything happen to you, T. Not now, not ever. You’re stuck with me. Who in their right mind does science experiments on kids and turns them into superhuman fighters just because they have special abilities? And to think the government is behind it? That’s downright sick.”
His phone buzzed and he picked it up.
“Everett Flynt.” Pause. “Fantastic. We’re on our way now.” He locked his gaze on Twenty. “Ever fly on a plane before?” he asked her.
“Once,” she replied. “When I was a baby.”
“Well, you’re about to fly in style,” he told her eagerly. “My jet comes with all the amenities a new flyer can hope for. This will be a trip you’ll more easily remember. Let’s get you out of here before those creepers come back for you.”
He grabbed her hand and pulled her out of the restaurant, turning off the lights as he went. “I guess you'll have to meet my family some other time,” he said to her. “Your safety is all that matters to me in this moment.”
They walked together quickly out into the dark night. The rain had died down, but there were still clouds blocking out the moon. Everett seemed to know the way by heart.
“How far is the airport from here?” Twenty had to almost run to keep up with his long strides. “Can we walk to it?”
“Pretty much,” was Everett’s response. “Hold on to my hand. I don't want you to get lost.”
Twenty was on high alert, listening for any sounds of soldiers. The night was quiet.
The jet was waiting for them on a platform when they arrived, and a flight of stairs descended from the side, ready to go. A flight attendant stood in the entryway.
“Mr. Flynt. Welcome.” She greeted him. “Your message sounded urgent. Is everything all right? It isn’t like you to leave your island home in such a hurry.”
“Yeah, I know,” Everett replied. “Normally I wouldn’t, but this was an exception. Thanks for coming.”
He led Twenty up the steps. The flight attendant looked at her curiously.
“It’s a long story,” Everett explained. “As I told Cam earlier, I'll explain everything once we land in Los Angeles. I hope there’s space for two on this flight.”
“There is space for as many as you wish, Mr. Flynt,” the flight attendant told him. She smiled at Twenty. “Please, make yourself comfortable,” she said in a low voice.
“Thank you,” Twenty answered shyly. Her eyes grew wide the instant she stepped into the cabin. It was definitely not going to be an economy-class flight.
Just as Everett moved to follow after her, however, the attendant gripped his shoulder. Her gaze flicked to the young woman for a brief moment. “Who is she?” she whispered. “I’ve never seen her before.”
“Neither have I, until she showed up in front of the restaurant all alone and soaking wet,” Everett responded. “She appeared lost and cold, so I took her in. She’s my new sous chef.”
“What?” The woman was taken off-guard.
“Trust me,” Everett insisted. “I've never been wrong about anyone yet. Go with this one, okay?”
“Of course, Mr. Flynt.” The woman nodded. “You two enjoy your flight, and if there’s anything I can do to make your trip comfortable, just ask.”
“We will,” Everett promised.
He found Twenty standing by a table near the back of the plane, looking awed but hesitant. Her face brightened when she saw him.
“Everett.” She spoke his name in a relieved tone.
“Hey, T.” He greeted her. “Shall we sit?”
Twenty carefully sat down on one of the benches, and he sat on the one across from her.
“This is your jet?” she asked in wonder.
“Well, it’s not exactly mine,” he revealed. “It belongs to the network that runs my show. It just feels like mine because I'm always using it for travel.” He nodded out the window. “This isn't an ordinary flight,” he explained. “You can stretch your legs, and there’s a bed in the back section if you want to lie down for a bit. The flight to LA is going to be kinda long.”
Twenty looked out the window. Everything was pitch black. Somewhere out there, IWWA was looking for her. Her tracker chip had already given Michaelson and Abrams her location. Now, thanks to her telekinetic blast, they were probably lying unconscious somewhere in the woods.
“I am a bit tired,” she admitted, stifling a yawn. “But I'm scared.”
“Scared?” Everett drew back. “What are you scared of?”
“The bad men coming back,” she replied. “They already found me at the restaurant. They won't stop hunting me until I'm back where I belong. They can track me from all corners of the world. They’ll find me again and again, as long as the tracking chip is active.”
“There is no reason to be scared now.” Everett gently placed his hand on top of hers. He could feel it trembling. The plane began to jolt as it rose into the air.
“Attention, passengers.” The pilot’s voice came through the intercom. “This is your pilot. Feel free to enjoy the amenities offered on our jet as we head for Los Angeles. It will be a long flight, so get comfortable. We predict sunny skies in California.”
“Told you.” Everett grinned, hoping to relieve the tension. “It’s going to be okay, T. You’re free now. As long as I'm here, no one will touch you. I have connections. The security on my show set is rock solid. I'll make sure no one breaks through. There is nothing to be scared of anymore. When we get to California, I'll see what can be done about that tracking device, but for now, get some rest. You've been up for far too long. I'll show you to the bed.”
He got up and placed his hands on her shoulders, guiding her out of the seat. She allowed him to walk her down the cabin.
“They'll wake up,” she was muttering. “They’ll go back to the facility and they’ll report in. It’s what they’re trained to do.”
Everett clicked on the light in the back room, revealing a comfortable-looking sleeping space with a rather wide bed. He led Twenty over to it and helped her lie down.
“Are you going to be close?” she asked him, lifting her legs up on to the mattress.
“Yes,” he answered. “I’ll be right outside the room. I'm going to stay up a little longer and tend to things out here. No one’s going anywhere. We’ve already lifted off, so those agents can’t chase you even if they tried. And don’t worry; the pilot is a smooth flier. The ride will be very gentle for you.”
Twenty seemed reassured by these words and shifted her body so her head was lying on one of the fluffy pillows. She felt more tired than she’d realized. She yawned again, her cheeks flushing at the fact that Everett was right there.
“Good night, Everett.” The words came out quiet but audible.
“Good night, T,” Everett answered, standing up and walking to the doorway. “We’ll all be here if you need anything. I'll wake you up when we arrive in LA.”
“Mhm.” Twenty murmured and rolled over on to her side, her eyes closing almost instantly. The bed was so comfortable, it was like sleeping on feathers. The bed in her room at the research lab was nowhere near this high-quality. It was comfortable enough where she could sleep on it, but not so much where she could stay asleep.
The door closed, the light from the cabin disappearing. She didn't even notice. Exhaustion had overtaken her.

Deadly Hurricane Beryl becomes the earliest Category 5 storm on record just hours after battering the Windward Islands.
On Monday evening, Hurricane Beryl intensified to 160 mph, surpassing 2005's Hurricane Emily as the earliest Category 5 storm to form in the Atlantic Ocean. The storm has since grown even stronger.
Just hours after deadly Hurricane Beryl pummeled the Windward Islands with devastating winds and a powerful storm surge as a major Category 4 storm, Beryl intensified further, reaching Category 5 strength on Monday evening and setting the record for the earliest Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic basin.
According to the National Hurricane Center, Beryl reached peak wind speeds of 160 mph as of their 11 p.m. ET Monday update, classifying the storm at the highest level of the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale and surpassing Hurricane Emily's Category 5 status on July 16, 2005.
The storm continued to intensify on Tuesday morning, reaching peak gusts of 165 mph before drifting back to 160 mph by late morning. These peak winds are 15 mph faster than when the hurricane made landfall on Carriacou Island earlier on Monday.

Beryl caused widespread destruction, toppling trees, knocking out power, and creating a life-threatening storm surge that sent water rushing inland across the southern Windward Islands. The extremely dangerous hurricane made landfall as a high-end Category 4 storm, leaving at least three dead and raising fears that the death toll could climb higher. The catastrophic winds battered the region as terrified residents hunkered down in their homes and shelters, waiting for the storm’s fury to pass.

The catastrophic winds battered the region as terrified residents hunkered down in their homes and shelters, waiting for the storm’s fury to pass.
Then came a dire warning from the National Hurricane Center, urging residents to stay indoors until the storm had passed.
"This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation," the NHC stated. "Residents should remain in their shelters and stay in place throughout the passage of these life-threatening conditions."
The NHC reported that Hurricane Beryl produced sustained winds of 92 mph at Grenada airport, along with a devastating wind gust of 121 mph – equivalent to a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. St. Lucia also experienced significant impacts, with sustained winds of 52 mph and gusts reaching 63 mph.
Hurricane Beryl, the second named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, made history by rapidly intensifying from a tropical depression to a tropical storm and then to a major hurricane (Category 3 or higher) in less than 48 hours.
St. Lucia Implements Nationwide Shutdown Ahead of Hurricane Beryl
Residents of the region spent the weekend preparing for the storm's onslaught by securing windows, filling up gas tanks, and picking up last-minute supplies after it became clear that Hurricane Beryl would continue to strengthen as it approached island nations like Barbados and St. Lucia, where Hurricane Warnings remain in place.
The office of St. Lucia Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre announced a nationwide shutdown and instructed all residents to remain indoors until the all-clear is given. Hospitals and wellness centers on the island activated emergency plans, shelters were opened for residents, and police and fire departments were on high alert, ready to respond to emergencies during the hurricane.
The prime minister's office also stated that utility crews would be deployed across the island in full force once Hurricane Beryl passes through the region.

Barbados Braces for Beryl by Closing Schools and Airports
Residents of Barbados have been preparing for the impact of Hurricane Beryl since the end of last week.
Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley took to social media on Friday and again on Sunday to urge her constituents to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the storm.
While Hurricane Beryl's worst wasn't expected to hit the island directly, it could still have a devastating impact. "We still need to be extremely vigilant," Mottley said Sunday night. "You can tell that there's bad weather in the atmosphere."
The Barbados Light and Power Company announced that it did not plan to shut down electricity ahead of the storm, but emergency procedures were in place. "Our protection systems are designed to automatically trip any circuits impacted by the hurricane," the company said. "Additionally, our teams will be in control centers throughout the night, monitoring systems."

The island has opened dozens of shelters for residents, and Mottley asked residents to stock up on food and water. Although the power was not expected to be shut down, the Barbados Water Authority shut down the water system as a precautionary measure to protect critical infrastructure.
Schools across Barbados have been closed, and Grantly Adams International Airport closed at 7 p.m. Sunday, remaining closed until further notice.
Where is Hurricane Beryl?
As of the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Hurricane Beryl was about 510 miles from the Dominican Republic.
Hurricane Beryl has intensified again, with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph and a minimum central pressure of 938 millibars, making it a Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Hurricane-force winds (74+ mph) extend outward up to 40 miles from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds (39+ mph) extend outward up to 125 miles.
The NHC reported that a weather station at Hewanorra International Airport in St. Lucia recorded sustained winds of 47 mph and a gust of 64 mph.
There have also been multiple reports of downed trees, flooded streets, power outages, and storm surge flooding in the Grenadines, Grenada, Barbados, and Tobago.
On Beryl's forecast trajectory, the storm's center is currently moving into the southwestern Caribbean Sea after crossing the southern Windward Islands and will continue on its west-northwest path over the next few days.

Top 5 Historical Churches in the Philippines that Stand the Test of Time
Since the Spanish colonization era in the Philippines, various churches have risen nationwide. Though many of these churches have experienced their fair share of wear and tear, historical churches in the Philippines are still standing strong.
List of Historical Churches in the Philippines
Spain’s colonization of the Philippines spanned over three hundred years and had lasting effects on the country’s culture. Their influence is still evident today in Filipino tradition and structures. This article aims to explore a list of historic churches in the country due to Spanish colonization.
Parish Church of San Agustin of Intramuros
Located in Intramuros, this parish is known to be the oldest church in the Philippines, constructed with stone. Originally, the church was built on bamboo and nipa leaves in 1571. However, due to its weak structure, it was destroyed by typhoons and strong winds. In the year 1586, a resolution was made to build a church with a stronger structure using adobe stone. Large stone slabs were cut from quarries in various places like Guadalupe, Meycauyan, and San Mateo, Rizal.
Additionally, the parish’s design and structure were designed by architect Juan Marcias on the intersection of Calle Real and St. Lucia Street. From its construction in 1587, the church took several years to complete until 1607.
Paoay Church, Ilocos Norte
This historical church in Ilocos Norte was completed in 1710 and recognized as a National Cultural Treasure and UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is popular for having twenty-four large buttresses on its sides and back. The church’s pyramid-like structure makes it so distinctive from other parishes in the country. Moreover, its architecture showcases the earthquake baroque style due to its thick walls made of coral stones and bricks. This style is popular among historical Philippine churches to minimize the effects of earthquakes.
Additionally, the church stood as an observation post by Katipuneros during the revolution by guerrilleros against the Japanese. It has seen its fair share of catastrophes in Philippine history, from surviving natural destruction like earthquakes and typhoons to serving as war headquarters for Filipinos.
Parish Church of Saint Joseph of Baras, Rizal
Another historical church in the Philippines is located in Baras, Rizal. Originally, it was built in 1595 by Franciscans after Aetas burned down the area as an act of rebellion. After the Aeta’s retribution, the town moved to Ibayo in 1636 but returned to its current location in 1682.
The inside of the church has also been preserved with its original external structure. The interior boasts exposed wooden trusses supporting the parish’s roofing. However, the church is unlike other parishes that showcase decorated ceilings since these are not popular in the area. Visiting this church will surely make individuals feel like they are traveling back in time.
Bacarra Church, Ilocos Norte
This church has been included in the list of historical Churches in the Philippines. Visitors can visit this church museum in its former convent, which stores religious and cultural artifacts and other archival images and documents. Moreover, this parish is known for the Torres di Bacarra or its “beheaded” belfry. It is also another National Historical Landmark and a National Cultural Treasure.
The Torre di Bacarra was once one of the highest buildings in the Philippines, with an original design of a sixteen by sixteen-meter base and fifty meters tall. It was once the highest bell tower in the country until earthquakes damaged the structure. The ruined parts of the tower remain untouched and are now filled with beautiful greenery.
Majayjay Church, Laguna
Originally built with plywood, its original structure was not made to last. The current structure of the Majayjay church has Romanesque roots and is two hundred feet long, fifty-six feet wide, and fifty-four meters high. The parish boasts three stories, and at the highest point is a triangular pediment paired with a circular window. It was originally built in 1649 and has been renovated ever since. Today, the parish has azulejo tiles, a glazed and colored Spanish tile.
This church is also declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCAA). Augustinian missionaries spearheaded the structure, partly burned in 1660 and restructured in 1707. Furthermore, it served as an American base during the Filipino-American war and was once restructured in 1912.
Final Thoughts
There are still numerous historical churches in the Philippines to this day. These churches have witnessed numerous strides in national history and culture. They are now more than safe spaces for believers; they are also testaments to Filipino architecture and tourist spots. That said, they always showcase the popular designs in those areas when they were built.
