The las vegas gp schedule is absolutely bonkers. I mean, asking people to drive at 300+ kmph but allowing them only like minutes to sleep and rest for it because #PR
How did FIA allow this?

the way some of you treat ocon as the butt of either "5 seconds penalty" jokes which have now turned unfunny or "poor X Driver Who's His Teammate" jokes which were never funny to begin with is concerning.
these are drivers who have so much more to them than the same punchlines. and ocon is as competitive as most other drivers in this sport but he ends up being the easy target for these jokes for some of you because he is not one of the most liked drivers already.

explaining f1: pit stops
boxing
teams have to carefully plan strategy around pitstops, taking factors like tyre wear and track position into account.
once a driver hears the "box, box" radio message, they will enter their pit box, located in front of the team's garage. garage positions are assigned based on the constructer's championship of the previous season, with the winning team normally closest to pit entry and so on.
drivers can pit as often as they want, though they generally keep their visits to a minimum because each stop costs racing time.
the crew
there are 12 members involved in the tyre changing process. there are 3 members for each driver, with one removing the old tyre, one putting the new try on and the third loosening and tightening wheel nuts.
this process requires the car to be raised, so 2 members operate a front jack and 2 operate the rear jack. a further 2 crew stand to the side with spare front and rear jacks.
there are also 2 members in the middle of the car holding it steady, and 2 adjusting the front wing.
one final member ensures the pit lane is clear so the driver can move off.
rules
pit stops are mandatory as a result the rule that requires drivers to use at least two different tyre compounds during a race (read my explanation of tyres here). if a driver violates this during a dry race, they will be disqualified but this rule does not stand for races where 'inters' or 'wets' are used. in 2021 in turkey, esteban ocon finished the race without a single pit stop.
mechanics must make sure to take at least 0.15 seconds while changing tyres to ensure they are properly tightened. the driver must also wait a further 0.2 seconds before leaving.
speeding in the pit lane (going above 80kmh) will result in a penalty, as will impeding a competitor while exiting. drivers will also be penalised if they leave their box in what is deemed an unsafe manner.
each member of the pit crew is required to wear safety gear and a helmet in compliance with fia requirements.
pit boxes are also where 'stop-go' penalties are served. punishment for rule violations, a driver can be required to enter the pit, stop for a certain amount of time without any work being done to the car, and then rejoin the race.
strategy
undercutting and overcutting are the two most common pitting strategies.
the 'undercut' is a strategy where a driver pit early (and usually unexpectedly) and uses fresh tyres to get ahead of a rival who will have to pit later.
the 'overcut' happens when a driver delays pitting in order to gain position while rivals pit. this allows the driver to take advantage of the clean air in the hope that when they do pit, they have built up enough time to come out in front.
refuelling
refuelling has been banned in f1 since 2010. prior to this, teams would refuel while changing tyres, a useful strategy tool.
safety concerns surrounded refuelling. in hockenheim in 1994, jos verstappen's pit stop saw his car accidentally soaked in petrol before it erupted into flames. no one involved was seriously injured, but this was not the only incident of dangerous a refuelling incidents.
records
the current record for fastest pit stop belongs to mclaren. in qatar in 2023, they executed a pit stop for lando norris in 1.8 seconds (beating the previous record of 1.82 set by red bull in 2019).
alternatively, the current record for longest pit stop belongs to mercedes. in monaco in 2021, during valterri bottas' stop, a mechanic was unable to remove the front right tyre due to an issue with the wheel nut which forced the team to retire the car. the team was only able to remove the wheel nut after 43 hours.
another notable pitstop occurred in japan in 2023. sergio perez sustained damage and retired from the race. after 41 minutes however, he returned to the race to serve a 5-second penalty, his team exploiting a loophole to ensure this penalty wasn't transferred onto the next race.

Just to clarify today's race had...
- Issues with Gasly's car before the race even started (DNF)
- A safety car for Stroll. Hit the wall going around the corner, tire got fucked, into a different wall (DNF)
- Accidental early start for Lando which ended up screwing him over more than anything (but no penalty)
- Ocon taps Albon causing damage but both contiune
- Perez exits pits and almost crashed with Alonso, resulting in a 5 second penalty for unsafe release
- Magnussen 10 second penalty for leaving the track and going up a place
- Ricardo spin on track but contiunes
- "EAT SLEEP WIN REPEAT MAX WINS THE GRANDPRIX"
- Oliver Bearman getting points on his F1 debut race
- Norris leads the pack for like 7 laps before ending in 8th
Not the craziest race but still wtf

Race Recap 8: Monaco
Sunday 26th May 2024
Build-Up:
On 21st May, McLaren unveil a special yellow, blue and green livery as a tribute to Ayrton Senna, 30 years after his passing
On 23rd May, rumours emerge that Carlos Sainz may be in contract negotiations with Williams for 2025
Both Haas drivers are disqualified from qualifying due to a technical infringement on the rear wing and will start the race from the pit lane
Race Highlights:
Carlos Sainz and Oscar Piastri make contact going into turn one, causing Sainz to suffer a puncture and lock up in the first corner, bringing out the yellow flag. Sainz manages to bring the car back to the pit lane
On Lap 1, Kevin Magnussen makes contact with Sergio Perez, who spins into the wall and then into Nico Hulkenberg, bringing out the red flag. The front half of the Red Bull car is destroyed, causing £2-3 million worth of damage
Also on Lap 1, the two Alpines make contact after Esteban Ocon tries to overtake Pierre Gasly. Ocon’s car is briefly airborne, damaging the car. He receives a 10-second penalty, which later becomes a 5-place grid penalty for the race in Canada. Ocon does not restart the race after the red flag
All of the drivers come into the pits under the red flag. Race Control confirms the starting order for the restart will be the same as the start of the race, meaning Carlos Sainz will restart from 3rd
Lance Stroll pits on Lap 50 with a puncture
The first overtake of the race occurs on Lap 54, when Valtteri Bottas overtakes Logan Sargeant for 13th place
The top 10 at the end of the race remains the same as after qualifying
Charles Leclerc wins his home Grand Prix for the first time
Race Results:
1st Place: Charles Leclerc
2nd Place: Oscar Piastri (Leclerc)
3rd Place: Carlos Sainz

Austria GP recap in case you missed it
Charles with a terrible start 💔 (he was in p20 and made a million pit stops). The girls (ocon + gasly) were fighting again. Lando and Max causing chaos by colliding and bitching about each other on the radio.
Russel somehow in the lead then wins the race? When did that happen 🤔
My bbg Piastri appears in P2 😘
Sainz 3rd.
Also Lewis got a 5 second penalty and Danny Ric finished in the points !! (but Leclerc did not😓)
Bonus —> George and Toto flirting on the radio post race
—> I think George did his silly pose again 😭😭
—> Norris still somehow managed to get DOTD??

How bad management is ruining the Triple Crown 👑👑👑
So Sunday saw two thirds of motorsports triple crown take place, the Monaco Grand Prix and the Indy 500.
There were highs. Charles LeClerc winning his home Grand Prix, McLaren’s epic Senna tribute livery, further proof that the survival cell of an F1 car and an Indycar are first rate, the passionate Indy crowd staying despite a 4 hour rain delay and the huge love Pato O Ward inspires in people.
However the lows are multiple and worrying. Both races leave a bit of a sour taste in the mouth and if we dont acknowledge it then how will we ever avoid it happening again?
Let’s start in Monaco on Saturday morning. An incident between Lando Norris and George Russell. Lando coming out of the dark tunnel into daylight at speed, finds a slow moving George on the racing line to the left meaning he has to swerve right from the line and slow down. He then turns left in front of George onto the racing line to turn into the tight left right right left chicane that he is now at. He has a bit of a sarcastic rant over team radio about others impeding and carries on. The stewards somehow interpreted that as Lando turned in on George in anger. That was the first warning the stewards were high on glue!
On to qualifying and during Q1 bits of advertising was coming off the walls and attaching itself to cars. When McLaren pulled a banner easily 6ft if not more from under Lando’s car, common sense would say, oh hang on this is dangerous, should we red flag this and check any banners hanging off? Of course they didn’t!!
By the end of qualifying despite the various incidents investigated of impeding and a driver receiving a three place grid drop for the same thing only a race before, the stewards decide to penalise no-one 🤦‍♀️ Anyone know the French for consistency?
Also those people trying to claim that impeding doesn’t count if the person qualifies out of the session let me explain. Impeding is an action not a consequence.
The real warning bells were going off that there had been some obvious gamesmanship between Carlos Sainz and Lando, with the former trying to compromise the later getting a decent quali lap in and . . . . silence. Not even a slap on the wrist.
But they did somehow find time to disqualify both Haas cars 😬
So along comes Sunday and less than a minute into the race Sergio Perez car has no front wheels, the Haas cars have both been planted into the walls, Carlos is sat at Casino with a puncture having driven into Oscar Piastri at Sant Devote and Esteban Ocon’s car has been been airborne, damaging both Alpines. By the time the red flag comes out the front 3 or 4 are over half way round the track, BUT poor Zhou Ghanyu is stuck not having made it to the second corner as three spinning F1 cars and a sea of debris sit between him and the rest of the track. And this is where it gets ridiculous.
The stewards decide that as not everyone got past the first timing point before the red flag, because as previously mentioned Zhou had no hope, and despite the fact the front of the field has passed the second safety car line, we will restart the race as if none of that happened. In effect people like Lance Stroll who made up three places lose them and Carlos Saniz who was effectively out at turn 2, gets to start again from 3rd and will end up on the podium. The gamesmanship from yesterday continues, as after all it had gone unpunished and effectively destroyed any hope of the top 4 every changing places!
However at this point the stewards wake up and realise they are meant to be upholding the standards of F1 and decide to give Ocon a 10 second penalty, but as he damaged his car so badly he can’t continue they decide to make this a 5 place grid drop for the next race. Continuing with the approach of one big grand gesture rather than bother with the little stuff.
The big issue was the often contested rule of people being able to change tyres to any compound under a red flag, meant the top 5 competed the race without ever having to change tyres.
You got to the end of the Monaco Grand Prix feeling like someone was meant to have been protecting the integrity of that race and F1, but they were off having a liquid lunch on one of the yachts.
The fact the three car smash resulted in a photographer being hospitalised really highlights that priorities were definitely in the wrong place in the Côte d’Azur.
So we then we turn to the rain delayed Indy500. And nothing says pinnacle of motorsport like a road sweeper!
8 cautions meant this race felt like motorway road works where you have to shuffle past at a set speed for a few miles then you get a couple of minutes of speed and then back to shuffling. And guess what? This race didn’t get more than 30 seconds in before cars were out either!
By this point, for those of us who had watched both it felt like the day would never end. But at least it looked as though it would end with a popular first time winner . . . . but no.
I’m not sure of how much people outside of America are aware or how much people in the US are unaware of the optics outside.
The race was won by a team owned by the guy who owns the track they were racing on and effectively has control of the series the race forms part of.
And yes you remember correctly, Andretti really did ask Congress to write to F1 and Liberty Media this year as they felt F1 was breaking US competition laws. Yet they seem fine with this!
Here is the issue. Josef Newgarden and Team Penkse were disqualified from the first race of this season as they ran with an upgrade that teams had been testing for next season, that they claim they forgot to take off. It resulted in four members of Newgarden’s usual team being suspended internally. So you know what would not be a good look? To bring this up in your post race interview, or say you don’t care what people say about you in respect of it, or thank your suspended team members. Yeap, he went there, led with his whole chest. I wouldn’t be surprised if the head of the team’s PR department was later found in a Jack Daniels induced comma!
If there was a year where maybe it might have been better for Indycar if anyone but Team Penske won its most watched race, it was this one.
So motorsport Christmas Day as I saw Sunday called, ended with a sense that these two triple crown races feel they can make their own rules up as they go along. Consistency, integrity, perception be damned.
Maybe it’s time they stepped back and truly looked. The three races that make up the triple crown are considered the three hardest races to win. Only one driver has ever done it and two manufacturers/teams. Time to do away with the glamorous self congratulatory nature they seem to revel in and get back to being about the racing, like Le Mans still is!

FP1:
Several drivers already cutting it very close to the barriers and ripping off advertising.
ZHO ripped off more than that and lost his end plate.
Which Charles promptly drove over and then got it stuck under his car, before a red flag could be called to clean up the debris.
Pierre was having PU issues and ended up being able to put in only a handful of laps
P1: HAM | P2: PIA | P3: RUS
Tumblr media
FP2: Charles was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 !!
Tumblr media
P1: LEC / P2: HAM / P3: ALO
Tumblr media
FP3:
Charles was again on fire and finished at the top of the list. I honestly can't recall anything else happening!
P1: LEC / P2: VER / P3: HAM
Tumblr media
Quali:
In Q1 plastic from advertising had wrapped around Charles's front wing end plate, messing up the aerodynamics and leading to much slower laps than anticipated.
Shock exit for PER as he placed P18 with only the Saubers behind him.
GAS managed to make it to Q3 much to Pierre's delight as he was shouting on the radio when told he was P5 in Q2. Teammate OCO ended in P11.
Bad luck seemed to follow Charles again as he reported something moved in the pedals, but he still took provisional pole.
Another super lap in the final stages of Q3 gave Charles his third pole in Monaco with an incredible 1:10:27.
Haas drivers HUL and MAG qualified P12 and P15 respectively, but ended up getting disqualified because they changed their wing and did no measure the height correctly. This meant a pit lane start for both of them.
Tumblr media
Petit's Race Notes:
Ah, where to begin? Oh, I know!
CHARLES LECLERC WINS THE 2024 MONACO GRAND PRIX!!!!!!
Tumblr media
Fingers and toes crossed at the start, but Charles was quick off the line. But behind him chaos unfolded...
Carlos bumped into Oscar and got himself a puncture which led to a yellow flag.
Next Checo and Kevin collided as K-Mag tried to squeeze through and Perez did not give him any space. PER hit the wall, got hit by MAG again, and then HUL also got hit for good measure.
The end result was that PER's car was reduced to the survival cell, debris was scattered all over the race track, both Haas's were out, and we had a 45-minute red flag for clean up and barrier repairs.
Meanwhile elsewhere on track OCO drove into GAS launching himself in the air and damaging both Alpines in the process. Gasly's car was repairable, but Ocon was out. He also received a 5-place grid penalty for Montreal and 2 points on his license. And Alpine is even rumoured to be considering having him sit out the next race...
With the red flag thrown before all cars entered sector 2, the order was reset for a second start.
Which meant Carlos (who'd been able to make it back to the garage) started again in P4, and Charles had to have another good start to keep his position.
This time all went well, and we were in for 75 laps of anxiety (Charles fans) / boredom (everyone else).
George (in mediums) backed up the pack, so it was 🔴🟡🔴🟡 at the front (McLarens in their special yellow Senna livery).
ALO led his usual DRS train - under the assumption he was P10 (found out after the finish that he was actually P11).
The remaining 16 (!!!) cars all made it to the finish line without further incidents.
Pierre Gasly scored his first point of the season.
There were only 6 pit stops the entire race.
After much nail biting and some lovely team radio sound bites, Charles came across the finish line and FINALLY won his home Grand Prix! 🙌
Not a dry eye in the house at the podium celebrations! The royal family was elated, with Prince Albert II crying, Charles's football buddies pumping their fists in the air, and the Prince also getting in on the champagne spraying.
Oscar was the only non-Ferrari man on the podium, but having been recently "adopted" by Charles, he was part of the family!
Watching on below the podium: girlfriend Alex, Mum Pascale, brothers Lorenzo (with girlfriend Charlotte) and Arthur, Joris, John Elkann, Andrea, Nicolas Todt, and the entire Ferrari team, with Ale lifting the P1 sign over his head! The Monaco/Italy anthem combo hadn't sounded like this since Monza 2019! 😍
Charles has already told Bryan over team radio that he wanted everyone to stay for celebrations, and celebrate they did - well into the night!
Fred and Charles also made good on their agreement to jump into the harbour (originally from 2018 when it was about scoring points).
Charles continues his streak of top 4 finishes this season, and is now only 31 points behind Max in the WDC.
Top 3: P1: LEC | P2: PIA | P3: SAI
Fastest lap: Lewis Hamilton
Driver of the Day: Charles Leclerc
Fastest pit stop: Red Bull/Max Verstappen (2:10)

I don’t really understand what George is asking (dum I know) but he seems really switched on to strategy so seems like he’s made a good call.
Aaand on another note.. I have not missed certain LH fans coming for George for *checks notes* thinking about his race.
Alright sorry it took me a minute to get here, I wanted to give you a proper answer and I’m flagging from post race adrenaline droop.
So to explain what George was asking- in essence he was suggesting the team might want to consider the possibility of inverting the cars in order to stop Charles from catching him and getting within his five second window. The purpose of this was to prevent the TEAM losing points should George be demoted a position with Charles too close.
What George made clear was that he intended to stay within 5 seconds of Lewis, so that no matter what, Lewis would then inherit the position when George’s penalty was applied. Why would he suggest this? The bonk with Perez likely caused George some damage. None of them knew in what way, but with f1 hits like that almost inevitably cause some damage, and in the slick conditions that could be enough for an undamaged Leclerc to catch them and take the place from George, and thus lose the team a couple constructors points.
This was honestly a very smart idea from George, and if it became clear Lewis wouldn’t catch Ocon AND Charles was gaining, it would have been a good idea to employ.
You end up preserving the points for the team without taking away any points from Lewis. It wouldn’t really gain George much other than a helping hand staying away from Charles, which yes he isn’t entitled to, but for the sake of the constructors and team, it would benefit them.
It ended up not really being practical to implement- Lewis was managing to challenge Esteban and couldn’t be distracted, and despite the lack of damage Charles kept slipping away from George, making the swap a moot point. It’s also worth remembering George has no idea the state of Lewis’ car or tires, for all he knows Lew has damage, or none at all.
He poses it as a suggestion bc that’s what it is- a suggestion for the team to consider. This is why I called the idea clever-
While in the end there’s no reason for them to implement it, it’s seriously impressive to see George thinking on his toes as to how he can protect the team position. We saw a similar thing with Alonso’s penalty in Jeddah. And ultimately I think it’s worth considering that If George felt comfortable enough voicing the suggestion, then it’s probably a kind of driving style the team has discussed and agreed on- working together for the greater haul of points rather than keeping utterly divorced from one another for the sake of “their own race.
It’s a direct opposite to how Alpine handled a penalty the year before in Monaco, where Alonso’s choice to back Lewis up ended up backing up his teammate into a train and costing him multiple positions to a 5 second penalty.
At no point does George demand they implement it, it’s something for them to discuss, and when the team lets him know they don’t think it will help, He doesn’t push it. This is a kind of behaviour I’d like to see from George AND Lewis, it’s the definition of teamwork and thinking outside the box.
As for how fans are taking it-‘I’ve said it time and time again, George could offer to suck Lewis’ dick on live tv and twitter would find a way to be angry about it. Some people jump to ridiculous conclusions very fast, but a couple of the dumbest ones I’ve seen are:
“This is George’s way of trying to cheat and gain a position”
It’s not, that he made clear, and if he had, it would be an idiotic move. The team would never trust his calls again and he would destroy any chance of being helped in future. Only an idiot would try to play that game. It comes back to radio behaviour- they don’t say perfectly worded things. George is chatty, he makes lots of suggestions and trusts his team to decide for him. Even I’ve occasionally gone “George mate that’s not practical, if you want that place, go and take it” but most of the time he’s just thinking out loud. That’s not a crime. Secondly:
“Thank god Bono stopped that idea cold”
I love Bono but Bono did nothing. Bono is an expensive jacked microphone that can also perform calming techniques. It’s not his job, He makes no solo strat calls, nor does he get to choose what he tells Lewis. The ONLY persons in the team with the ability to to reject stratergy calls are the strat team itself, Toto, and the Drivers (no one can make them do anything.)
I was listening to Lewis’ radio the entire race- it’s never even mentioned to him, meaning it’s never told to Bono. At best the idea would have passed from Marcus to strategy, and then either strategy or Toto ruled it out. Simple as that. And that’s fine, I really think it’s good for George and Lewis to pitch ideas for consideration without the expectation of implementing, and those kinds of unorthodox moves will take them above rival teams in future.
Look at Ferrari, they kept impeding each other all weekend and dragging themselves down. Merc want the opposite.
This is so not news it’s not even funny, it’s nothing; something truly mundane we should step straight by, but thanks to the true boredom that is Monaco and an already over hyped fanbase that needs to be given a sharp reminder by Lewis that he likes George, it’s been blown up beyond what’s necessary.
The boys did great today, that was the best result they could have secured. They both drove sensibly under pressure with very new very finicky cars, George did great to get a handle on his drive finally and Lewis did incredible well considering he said last night that he got his set up wrong. A win all things considered

So, in the aftermath of yesterday, I thought it might be useful to make a little list of moments where Max behaved (in my opinion) in an unsportsmanlike way. Upon giving this a read, it should be quite obvious that Max behaves aggressively to almost everyone on the grid and that he was beyond lucky in 2021 to not get penalized like he had before then for similar incidents. Furthermore, if you're the type of person to write a post wishing for more incidents with max and other drivers as "karma" for 2021, kindly fuck off, as this list should show that max doesn't give a shit who he hits and for what position.
Mexico 2016 (Passes Vettel off-track and refuses to give the position back, earns a five-second penalty)
Hungary 2017 (Hits his teammate Ricciardo and causes him to DNF)
Mexico 2017 (Makes contact with Vettel and Hamilton, causing both to have to pit on the first lap. Max wins the race).
Bahrain 2018 (Hits Lewis, giving himself a puncture)
China 2018 (Hits Vettel and earns a 10-second penalty)
Baku 2018 (Collision with Ricciardo in an attempt to defend his position causing both to DNF)
Spain 2018 (Contact with Stroll at the end of a VSC period)
Monza 2018 (Defends aggressively from Bottas and forces him off the track, earning a 5 second penalty. Continues to refuse to let Bottas by and ends losing an additional position to Vettel because of his stubbornness).
Brazil 2018 (Has an accident with Esteban Ocon and then physically pushes him after the race)
Monaco 2019 (Makes contact with Bottas in the pits, forcing him to pit again and lose position. Makes contact with Lewis late during the race but both remain unscathed)
Austria 2019 (Forces Charles Leclerc off the track in the final laps of the race in a move that is identical to ones penalized in 2021 and onward; is never given a penalty and wins the race)
Mexico 2019 (Makes contact with Lewis at the start of the race, then hits Bottas a few laps later and gets a puncture)
Imola 2021 (Forces Lewis off the track to avoid contact at the start and goes on to win the race)
Monza 2021 (After an long pitstop, comes out right behind Lewis and attempts a move into Turn 1 that would never have succeeded. He bounces over the curbs and lands on top of Lewis' car, causing both to DNF. He immediately goes on the radio to say "that's what you get when you don't leave the space" and is handed a grid penalty. He never serves the penalty, however, as he takes a new engine for the following grand prix in Russia anyway)
Brazil 2021 (He is leading the race when Lewis attempts to pass, pushes him off the track so much they both go off in Lewis' attempt to avoid contact. This is not penalized due to claims that the "onboard footage" was missing and despite the missing footage being reviewed later that week, no penalty is ever given)
Abu Dhabi 2021 (Need I say more).
Brazil 2022 (Collides with Lewis, which damages his own car. Later in the race, he refuses to swap places with Perez for important championship points for his teammate, despite already being world champion at that point)
Singapore 2023 (He impedes Yuki during qualifying and is also stationary in the pit lane, both actions that normally incur penalties. He does not receive any penalty, a decision even the stewards later admit is a "mistake")
Austria 2024 (Defends aggressively from Lando, including moving under-breaking which should incur a penalty as an illegal move. When Lando attempts a move around the outside, he hits him twice and forces both cars off track and for both to have a puncture, with the damage on Lando's car being so great he DNF's).
I'm sure there's moments I'm missing but this is to serve as an illuminating example to those whose knowledge of F1 is more limited and haven't seen races pre-2022.
