Reblogging again to add:
That paragraph thing in school they taught you is still useful! But not for storytelling!
The whole A Pragraph Is 5 Sentences Thing is directed more at essays and trust me, keeping generally to that format when writing papers will make your life so much easier.
But essay writing and expository writing are two painfully different things that require very different methods of formatting.
What is stated above is the correct method of formatting your literature because it breaks up a lot of text and adds a much more dynamic feel to your writing.
Expository writing is about catering to the reader, where essay writing is centered more around the content itself and organizing your information.
So don't just throw the who concept away! Just use it when it's appropriate, aka when you're discussing a topic and need to neatly organize your information into nice, easy to navigate blocks of text each about their own specific detail/idea.
Whole-heartedly BEGGING writers to unlearn everything schools taught you about how long a paragraph is. If theres a new subject, INCLUDING ACTIONS, theres a new paragraph. A paragraph can be a single word too btw stop making things unreadable

How Do You Write a Thesis Statement for an Assignment?
Crafting a thesis statement is often likened to catching a cloud—elusive, ever-changing, and at times frustrating. Yet, mastering this essential skill is crucial whether you're composing a high school essay or a rigorous research paper at the university level. This guide aims to demystify the process, offering a step-by-step approach to help you create compelling thesis statements that anchor your writing effectively.
Section 1: Understanding a Thesis Statement
Definition of a Thesis Statement
A thesis statement is the core assertion or main idea of your paper. It succinctly summarizes the argument you plan to make in your essay or research paper.
Purpose of a Thesis Statement
The primary purpose of a thesis statement is to inform the reader of the purpose and direction of your paper. It sets the stage for what will follow, guiding the reader through your arguments and analysis.
Types of Thesis Statements
Analytical Thesis Statements: Break down an issue or idea into its key components, providing an analysis of the topic.
Expository Thesis Statements: Explain something to the audience, often how something works or is constructed.
Argumentative Thesis Statements: Make a claim about a topic and justify this claim with specific evidence.
Section 2: Steps to Crafting a Thesis Statement
Step 1: Identify the Assignment's Purpose
Understand the specific requirements and objectives of your assignment. Are you analyzing, explaining, or arguing a point?
Step 2: Narrow Down Your Topic
Choose a specific aspect of your topic that interests you and that you can feasibly explore within the scope of your assignment.
Step 3: Formulate Your Main Idea
Develop a concise statement that summarizes the main point or argument you will make in your paper.
Step 4: Support with Evidence
Consider what evidence or examples you will use to support your thesis statement. This step is crucial for crafting a robust argument.
Section 3: Characteristics of a Strong Thesis Statement
Clear and Concise: Clearly states the main idea of the paper without unnecessary jargon or complexity.
Specific: Focuses on a particular aspect of the topic rather than being too broad.
Arguable: Presents a debatable point that can be supported with evidence.
Relevant: Directly relates to the topic and purpose of the paper.
Section 4: Common Mistakes to Avoid
Being Too Vague: A vague thesis statement lacks specificity and fails to clearly define the scope of your paper.
Being Too Broad: Overly broad thesis statements can lead to unfocused writing and superficial analysis.
Lack of Argument: A thesis statement should make a claim that can be supported with evidence and analysis.
Section 5: Examples of Effective Thesis Statements
Example 1: Analytical Thesis Statement
"Through an analysis of Shakespeare's use of symbolism in 'Macbeth,' this paper explores the theme of ambition as a destructive force."
Example 2: Expository Thesis Statement
"The process of photosynthesis in plants involves a complex series of biochemical reactions that convert light energy into chemical energy."
Example 3: Argumentative Thesis Statement
"Social media has a detrimental impact on interpersonal communication skills among adolescents due to decreased face-to-face interaction and reliance on digital platforms."
Section 6: Refining Your Thesis Statement
Seeking Feedback: Share your thesis statement with peers or instructors to receive constructive criticism and refine your argument.
Revising for Clarity and Precision: Ensure that your thesis statement is clear, precise, and effectively communicates the main idea of your paper.
Section 7: Placement of Your Thesis Statement
Introduction Placement: Typically, the thesis statement is placed at the end of the introduction paragraph to provide a roadmap for the paper.
Integration with Topic Sentences: Each body paragraph should relate directly to your thesis statement and expand upon its supporting arguments.
Section 8: Using Thesis Statements in Different Disciplines
Humanities: Thesis statements in humanities papers often analyze literary works, historical events, or philosophical concepts.
Sciences: In scientific papers, thesis statements may propose hypotheses or summarize experimental findings.
Social Sciences: Thesis statements in social sciences papers often present arguments based on empirical research or theoretical frameworks.
Section 9: The Relationship Between Research Questions and Thesis Statements
Formulating Research Questions: Research questions guide your investigation and should align with your thesis statement's main argument.
Aligning Research Questions with Your Thesis: Ensure that your research questions support and contribute to the development of your thesis statement.
Section 10: Thesis Statement Writing Tips
Keep It Simple: Avoid overly complex language or convoluted arguments in your thesis statement.
Stay Flexible: Your thesis statement may evolve as you conduct research and refine your understanding of the topic.
Seek Examples: Review examples of thesis statements in your discipline to understand effective structures and arguments.
Section 11: Thesis Statement for Different Types of Essays
Compare and Contrast Essays: Your thesis statement should highlight the similarities or differences between the subjects being compared.
Cause and Effect Essays: Clearly state the cause-and-effect relationship that your paper will explore.
Persuasive Essays: Make a clear, assertive argument and justify your position with evidence and reasoning.
Conclusion
Crafting a strong thesis statement is essential for effective academic writing. By following the steps outlined in this guide—understanding the purpose, formulating a clear argument, supporting it with evidence, and refining for clarity—you can develop thesis statements that not only guide your writing but also engage your readers. i can address in part the bit about formulaic writing: Standardized Tests. All the way across from the US is Singapore, which on the whole is pretty good with the whole 'invest in education' thing, except for the bit about writing. because what the 'working world' wants is not creative thinkers or imaginative writers. It wants people who follow orders and express themselves logically, in a linear form, so that others can follow the same path. We hardly ever do narrative writing anymore. Instead, it's 5-paragraph essays and the PEEL paragraph structure and expository/argumentative/discursive essays blah blah blah. Good for relaying info. Bad for entertainment and imagination. but colleges around the globe used standardized exams - IB or GCE or SATs, whatever. so people learn to structure their thoughts to relay info. They don't learn to write.
I don’t want to sound rude but I’ve read that some people prefer to read fics from older fandoms and I agree because younger people are alarmingly illiterate. The too vs to, chose vs choose, lose vs loose, there their and they’re are just scratching the surface.
Genuinely I don’t want to be rude but I can’t read from writers who do not know how to read and write themselves. And I don’t mean EASL because I have no issue with these fics because despite the grammar clunkiness a lot of those fics are still well written by a writer who is clearly well read and able to write a good story in a way that someone illiterate in their first language just can’t.
--
I am sorry to inform you that choose/chose and its brethren are an eternal nuisance. The current crop of young fools might be worse about puritywank, but they're exactly the same as every other generation when it comes to bad proofreading.

Reflections on Writing
Writing has long been one of my least favorite things. This unsurprisingly was inherently linked with my belief that I wasn’t very good at it. After being admitted to Smith, I had to write a note to my future advisor about my strengths, weaknesses, academic interests, and concerns. It felt like such a no-brainer to list writing as my primary academic weakness. I don’t know precisely why or when I became convinced that I was a bad writer. I think part of it was that writing was challenging but even harder to evaluate. Also, I have always struggled with spelling and grammar. In high school, I got good grades on papers and was recommended for and was successful in our advanced expository writing course. Okay, I also got the English award in my sophomore year. Even so, I lacked confidence in my ability to write and was easily intimidated by long papers. In general, I enjoy learning and being challenged. But when it came to writing, I just felt overwhelmed.
Given the importance of college essays, applying to college was absolutely terrifying. I had the grades, the SAT scores, and decent extracurriculars. But could I pull off the essays? I seriously remember wondering how non-English majors are expected to get into college. Surprise surprise, I did eventually make it through the application process and get accepted at my dream school (Smith). If you are currently in the process of writing college essays, you can check out my full guide here. If you need some inspiration, I have also posted my Smith supplemental essay here.
I have always known that the ability to write is an important life skill. However, that knowledge just made writing all the more daunting. I was also used to the stereotype that engineers can’t write. I was thus partly reassured, but mostly afraid that I would just become another engineer who could only handle the numbers. Did I come to Smith because I wanted to continue taking non-STEM courses? Sort of, in that, I wanted to continue studying French. But if I am totally honest about things, I wanted to focus on STEM but also knew that I should diversify my knowledge and skills. In other words, I value and believe in a liberal arts education but my heart still lies fully with STEM. Yeah, even at a liberal arts college I am a double STEM major currently taking 5 STEM courses.
With all this said, you may be wondering why I started a blog. Did I know that blogging was primarily writing? And for that matter, why are my posts longer and more frequent than most other Smith bloggers? Well, it just sort of happened. I saw the posting welcoming new bloggers and thought it would be cool to document my Smith experience. Then, because I chose topics of interest, it was easy to write paragraph after paragraph. Blogging has been “easy” precisely because I write just the way I speak.
At this point in time, I am a lot more comfortable with writing and credit this blog for that transformation. Even so, I have no idea if my writing is actually any good. While writing has become a more natural experience for me, it doesn't fully translate to the classroom. A long research paper is still pretty intimidating, but I think that’s reasonable.

I have 5 total lessons for chem and geometry, since it's objective work I really just need to sit down and do them, I know I can. The biggest thing I'm struggling with is English. I was put in an advanced class but I'm having a hard time, I'm scared to admit I may need to be in reg English and feel stupid compared to everyone else. I passed the test to get in and was recommended by my previous teacher tho so idk. I have 3 extended responses and one 5 paragraph essay. All late. 🌞
do one assignment for chem and take a break. and then do geometry. don’t do them back to back.
for english, i get what you mean. i was recommended and placed in a higher class in ninth grade and bruh i felt DUMB AS FUCK while everyone was doing great. i got Cs on all my papers while everyone got As. but it wasn’t because i was dumb, and it’s not because you’re stupid. writing papers and responses isn’t easy. it’s a skill that gets better with practice. eventually it’s just second nature to you, especially expository writing. i STILL hate expos even as an english major.
and hey, its okay if they’re late. better late than never FOR SURE.

STEP 1: Hiring Our Writers in the United States
We must make careful decisions when hiring writers because they are not only the foundation of our company but are also responsible for writing for you. Here's an inside look at how we select our writers:
Step 2: After receiving applications for the writer's position, our HR team carefully shortlists potential writers based on education, experience, and other significant qualifications for the position of writer. We only hire natives who must pass complex English tests to ensure that every writer is fluent in English.
Step 3: Those shortlisted after the previous step must take another test in which they must write an essay on a random topic related to the subject(s) in which the writer specializes. Some criteria they use are subject knowledge, vocabulary, content quality, general writing style, the transition between paragraphs, and source credibility.
Step 4: Finally, they must undergo an interview in which their skills are evaluated, and all their concerns are addressed. Those chosen have their documents verified before being hired.
Step 5: You can review our professional essay writers' credentials - check their ratings, reviews, and customer feedback - and then choose the writer you believe is best for your assignment.
