thank you! i think you're genuinely the only person that has ever said they actually like the fact that my bathrobe is obnoxiously pink. and you're absolutely right, one of the things i like most about it is that it hurts people's eyes. i love it actually. if you ever celebrate halloween you should absolutely add your bathrobe to your costume. an amazing idea. since it has a mouse face on the hood it could be two costumes rolled into one - both a vampire and a mouse (if in the middle of the evening you get bored of one), which i think would be awesome. and you probably wouldn't get cold (is it cold in nz during halloween? because here it almost always is). we don't celebrate halloween in lithuania either though. which i'm a bit bummed about, because halloween sounds super fun. mostly because of the dressing up! but i did celebrate it once, when i was 11 or 12 maybe? me and a couple of friends decided it would be fun even if it's not really celebrated here. so we dressed up, even went trick ir treating (half the houses had no idea what was happening and also i pretty much froze to death because i was dressed as a dead bride and refused to put a coat on because then you couldn't see my dress) and also watched horror movies. 12 (or 11) year old me thought it was amazing.

oh yeah! i've broken a knife on 2 separate occasions i think. once i tried to get something out of between the blender's blades, used a knife and then accidentally turned the blender on (i'm so fucking glad it was a knife and not my fingers). so the tip of the knife broke off (the blender was ok tho). and the second time i have no idea how it happened. i was cutting up broccoli and the knife just fell apart??? i was so confused, because one second i'm holding a knife and the next it's just two pieces of a handle and the metal part, all separate. had fun explaining that to my dad. you sound pretty unlucky too! i mean, a cut every time you use a knife, but you don't even notice it at the time? i think it's just that knives are out to get us (it's my newest conspiracy theory). i actually get double vision too sometimes! mostly when i'm tired, but i just figured that it was because i have really bad eyesight

they definitely SHOULD teach about gender and sexuality in school. it's a really big problem that in a lot of places it's either not compulsory or not even in the curriculum. honestly, everything i know about sex ed or lgbtq+ i had to learn myself on the internet, because we only had one class when we were like 13 years old with a guest speaker and it was mostly biology and then a little bit about menstruation and pads for girls (i have no idea what they told boys because we were also separated). so sex ed definitely sucks a lot in my country and i bet it's the same in a lot of others, which makes me really mad

exactly!! it's so hard to tell whether i'm feeling romantic or platonic love sometimes! it's confusing. also i remember one time me and a couple of friends had a sleepover and the friend's, who was hosting, parents weren't home so we watched romance movies (scandalous i know). again we were maybe 12. and they kept going "oh he's so hot" and intensely watching the sex scenes. while i was looking away from the tv whenever sexy times were going on and commenting on how much i loved the house design and the garden. gee i wonder what that means. (still can't believe it took me this long to figure out i was ace)

(also i forgot to ask last time, but what is boxing day? google says it's mostly a shopping holiday, is it that? we just call it the second day of christmas and it's pretty much the same as christmas day but there's no presents!) but yeah i hope you had fun with your extended family on boxing day!

having acid reflux sounds like it sucks. i love breakfast, it's my favourite meal of the day (when i don't have to rush that is) and i skip lunch a lot because i usually have no time for it (my schedule kinda sucks), so i usually try to have a bigger breakfast. but hey, peanut butter is good! so at least you can have something that tastes good for breakfast!

I used to wish we did Halloween here but that was mostly because I wanted lollies. Although I also liked playing dress up as a young kid so maybe very young me would’ve vibed with the costume aspect. I know there’s a photo of me when I was like, 5 and my best friend of the time dressed up as witches at some point, maybe we had our own little halloween. I also possibly had a halloween themed birthday party once as a kid? I remember the little gift bags having spooky things in them and also possibly a bat cake but my memory is too bad to remember for sure. aha that’s the problem here too, no one locally would ever think to buy lollies to give out so it’d just be like um. you can have an apple I guess? at least you had fun though! i respect the commitment to the costume despite the cold.

that is such a stressful story to read, i fear for your life. although i understand the knife breaking in that first scenario. that would be terrifying though. what if the blender launched it,,, nOPE. i’m very glad it wasn’t your fingers, that’s some horror movie shit. the second time is just,, it be like that sometimes. it was probably just waiting to happen. my parents have a cheese grater with a loose handle and it. falls off. every time. i dry it. with the dishes. and every time i fear for my life as the grating bit drops off towards my feet as i’m left holding the handle. i should expect it by now but i never do. yup! i remember someone handing out tampons and pads at primary school, i assume after giving a talk about periods, idk. i do also remember a teacher pulling the girls aside and being like yo, this is what a period is, here’s a horror story about my daughter and a tampon, enjoy the trauma, go back to class. good times. we did actually get really comprehensive sex ed concerning most things at my high school but that is faaaarrr from the norm around here, clearly. although teenage boys are good at filling in gaps, in my experience. they’re like little sex encyclopedias that offer up information without you asking. i didn’t ACTUALLY want to know that but i do now, i guess, thanks michael.

dude. the ‘oh he’s so hot’ comments are so confusing. ‘hot’ is like a category of attractiveness that I’ve never understood. ‘isn’t he hot?’ what does that MEAN rebecca. i think i asked once if it meant like, attractive or good looking. and the person i asked was like, you know, hot. you just look at them and, you know- no i don’t know. what is this. i don’t think i’ve ever watched a sex scene with people my age though, generally i just zone out for them sdkfhskdfh. i feel like there’s definitely all these indicators when you look back like oh yeah, should’ve realised i was ace then, but it’s just. such a hard sexuality to figure out. not that other sexualities aren’t but you’ve got to figure out an absence of something when you don’t even know what the something feels like- it’s a challenge.

I’m glad it did! It is interesting, for sure. I’ve always been interested in how winter Christmas’s work. As a young kid I didn’t understand hemispheres...obviously...i was like 5...and i’d go out on Christmas morning to see if there was snow. and sometimes it’d be a bit chilly in the morning and I’d be like damn. we almost had some this year. it’s a shame our climate tends to be too hot for snow on christmas :// like no you tiny dumbass it’s summer you little idiot there will be no snow no matter what. everything ended up going super well here :). boxing day is basically just a shopping holiday, i don’t know if it has any significance in any other way, i’m sure it did at one point, but i know there’s always boxing day sales everywhere. I think it’s also a public holiday (?) to give people another day off work and that, but I could be wrong there. I know I also used to regularly go to the races (horse races) nearby that were always held on boxing day, it was like a 150 year old tradition or something until people in attendance started dropping and I think they finally shut it down a couple years back. I didn’t care all that much about the horses but they also had food and carnival-type rides and such for the kids which is why I loved it. also we tended to meet extended family there for a picnic lunch.

acid reflux is like the least of my problems sdfkjshdkf. it’s annoying but it’s pretty managed with medication, I have to watch certain foods and drinks but I’m used to it by now. I think it’s also what causes me to not be able to eat large amounts normally so I survive a lot on snacks and a reasonable sized dinner. works for me. but peanut butter is good! i’m glad i can have that! I used to also have vegemite but that’s a bit more of a push, it’s easier to stick with peanut butter.

Tips from a Comic Author

I asked a comic book author friend about making a comic, and she had these tips and advice to share:

1. Art tips- Practice drawing A LOT. Find some real-life anatomy pics (I may/may not have used a lot of playboy/playgirl centerfold pics to practice from lol) and practice drawing from those. It doesn’t have to be just those either.. find stock photos on google and type in a pose and draw them. Don’t just copy your favorite manga artists. And yes it’s ok to trace because it helps to create muscle memory. Use it as an aid. 2. One video that has helped me improve my style- search Drawingwiffwaffles and look up her video about improving your art style. Follow the steps. 3. It’s ok to suck at first. The improvements will happen slowly and over time. JUST KEEP GOiNG!!!! 4. Study up on the English language. For the love of the creation gods- CHECK AND DOuBlE CHECK YOuR GRAMMAR AnD SPELLING!!! There is nothing worse than reading dialogue that sounds stiff and robotic. Write the dialogue like how you would speak IRL. Oh and use all caps in your text so that you don’t have to worry about capitalization. 5. Plot out and script out your story. But don’t be afraid to make changes along the way. It’s ok to improvise. 6. Join Facebook/tumblr groups dedicated to indie comic creators. Networking with other creators will help expand your career. So you better learn to schmooze and brown nose all you can. 7. Don’t constantly reboot your story. Don’t get stuck in a perfectionist loop. Just keep moving forward and work to make each page/ issue better than the last. 8. Your gonna get frustrated and cry a lot. Get used to it. 9. Your motivations for comic creation better be more deep than just money or fame. Because neither of those come easy. It takes years. 10. Probably what I feel the most important is—- stay true to your vision and what you feel is morally right for you to do as a creator. There are a lot of movements within the indie creator world that demand certain “expectations” for every single story. If you feel like those expectations/standards don’t sit well with you, then don’t follow them. Stay true to who you are, your own creative voice, and your characters. There is an audience out there for every type of story. You just have to put in the work to get your story out there and noticed by the right people. If someone doesn’t like your story because there isn’t enough fan service/there isn’t enough violence/ there’s too much nudity/ too much violence—- any reason that is just opinion based. It’s not the end of the world. It just means they aren’t your audience. Don’t dwell on the haters. But definitely learn to recognize opinion vs actual criticism. 11. Character development—- don’t just settle for selling your character’s sexuality or gender /race in order to gain an audience. Find more meaningful/unique ways to make your characters stand out. 12. If your doing superheroes... don’t over power them. it’s boring and over used Hmm I’m sure I can think of tons more but those are definitely the first ones that always come to mind when ppl ask for tips and tricks

Krakow on a budget

Hey guys, if you’re looking for a beautiful city that won’t hurt the bank, search no more, Krakow is a charming medieval city with loads of history. I would say it’s a cheap city to have an adventure but it’s definitely not a “cheap city” as the quality of the trip I had was great! Here are few tricks to get around Krakow on a shoestring.

1. Auschwitz

My trip to Krakow has been amazing and depressing at the same time. It made me feel human again. It is necessary to visit the Auschwitz Memorial, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, to remind us that such hatred and cruelty should never happen again. I booked my tour with Viator and it was a round trip to Auschwitz and Birkenau for only £30. Included are: transport in a van (max 8 passengers), pick up/drop off at Krakow city centre, entrance fees, guided tour. Our driver Majiek was very friendly, made the trip back and forth less sad. I highly suggest you purchase this so you don’t have to waste time waiting for buses and chances are they’re full so you have to queue longer. The tour lasted 7 hours.

2. Wielickza Salt Mine

From one UNESCO World Heritage Site to another, the salt mine in Wielickza is an impressive one! Google Maps doesn’t really work in Krakow so commuting is a bit difficult. Good thing my friend suggested this website. It is also quite challenging to find the bus stop going to Wielickza so here’s a pro tip: west of Galeria Krakowska is Pawia Street, ride bus 304 located on Ogrodowa Street. Bus ride costs £2 return, plus travel time is 45 minutes each way. Wieliczka is one of the oldest salt mines in operation in the world. I am not claustrophobic but when I stepped inside and made my way 300 metres below ground, I must admit I felt a bit scared. It was replaced by amusement afterwards with the fascinating stories of the history of the mine and extraordinary sculpture and architecture made of salt. I have no plans of marrying someone but when I saw the Chapel of St. Kinga inside the mine, I was so blown away, I want my wedding venue to be there haha! I paid £15 with my student ID card (usual price is £20), it was so worth it! The down side is there’s no decent waiting area so if you’re there in winter, you’ll be freezing in line. The tour was 3 hours long and Evelyn, our guide was very witty with her commentaries, never had I LOL so much on a tour xD

3. Krakow Old Town

Marcin and I finally met in front of St. Mary’s Basilica, a beautiful brick Gothic church that dates back 13th century. I told him that it’s not the most grand or imposing piece of architecture I have seen but there is something about it that makes me drawn to it. We went to one of the afternoon tours offered by Krakow Explorers. It is a free walking tour and I must say the guides Eugene and Bartek were very knowledgeable about the city’s history, telling us compelling stories that make Krakow interesting and one of a kind. We booked 2 tours that day, a two hour walk of the Old Town and Sin City. Highlights of the Old Town tour are: St. Mary's Basilica (watch out for the hourly bugle call and wave back as he says hi!), Juliusz Słowacki Theater, the Barbican, St. Florian's Gate, Main Market Square (where public executions were done during Middle Ages and a form of entertainment back then), Cloth Hall, Medieval Town Hall, Collegium Maius (the alma mater of Nicolaus Copernicus and Pope John Paul II) , Wawel Castle and Wawel Cathedral.

Wawel Cathedral is a fun one, it’s the perfect example of harmony in diversity. There were three major constructions in 11th, 12th and 14th century after the first two were partially destroyed. The result was a splendid combination of Gothic and Renaissance carchitecture.

4. Jewish Quarter

Another day, another tour. My Polish friend and I booked another walking tour of Krakow Explorers and this time our guide was Dima. Jewish Quarter aka Kazimierz District is a good 15 minute stroll from the city centre. Highlights include: Old Synagogue, Holocaust Memorial, Jewish Cemetery, a film location in Schindler’s List, Jewish Ghetto, Heroes of Ghetto Square and Bridge of Love.

One of the few photos I have from the Jewish Quarter, the one above is Corpus Christi Basilica. Completed in 15th century, I’ve been told you need to wear shades inside the church as bright golden light will blind you on a sunny day.

Tales from Krakow

This is my favourite corner of Krakow, the lane of Unfaithful Thomas.

You have to go up in one of the towers of St. Mary’s Basilica to see this magnificent view of the the largest medieval square in Europe, Rynek Glowny aka Main Market Square. From the top you could see the monument of Adam Mickiewicz- the greatest Polish Romantic poet, Cloth Hall and Medieval Town Hall.

5. Travel to Warsaw

Seriously, I wouldn’t know what to do in the city if Marcin did not help me out. He even booked my ticket for my train to Krakow, the trip costs £30 one way for a two hour ride. Things not to miss when in Warsaw: Palace of Culture and Science, Old Town and Warsaw Rising Museum.

Marcin and I at St. Florian’s Gate. If I were to compare Krakow and Warsaw, Krakow wins my heart by million miles but I think it’s a bit unfair since I only stayed in Warsaw for 10 hours. Overall, I would rate my trip pretty good as Krakow captured me by it’s irresistible charm and if you ask me, I would go back again, this time, visiting Zakopane. For great Polish cuisine, the city never disappoints with it’s mouthwatering dishes, I would suggest places to eat but I guess this blog is not really for that. To my Polish friend Marcin, dziękuję! I had a blast just like we did in Nice, good luck on your master’s/thesis. Couldn’t thank you enough for all the help, until we meet again :D

Google’s latest Pixel smartphones: excellent camera and a decent price, but not as exciting as competitors

Google’s latest Pixel smartphones ditch the fancy frills. There aren’t a bunch of features you’ll never use, but a solid camera and price tags that are more manageable than your typical flagship phone.

I checked out both the Pixel 4a 5G and the Pixel 5 5G. These phones are similar, but there are some differences to know about. For starters, both phones have the same processor: it’s not top of the line, but it’s fine for everyday tasks. Still, it’s not as high powered as what you find on the latest Samsungs and iPhones. I noticed a bit of hesitation here and there with various tasks.

Pixel 5 has water resistance and wireless charging, two features that are absent on the 4a. Otherwise, both phones come standard with 128 gigabytes of storage and there is no way to add more with a memory card. Also, you can’t even buy a phone with more storage. 128 is your only option. Google is trying to keep things simple this year, I guess.

The camera setup on both phones is identical. You get Google’s standard regular lens that has proven its worth over the years. Now, for the first time, you also get a wide-angle lens. Unfortunately, the wide-angle lens is not as wide-angle as other recent phones I’ve tested, but it works. There is no telephoto lens for zoom shots, so all zooming is accomplished digitally.

Pictures on the Pixels are perfect, you’ll get great shots on the first try. They’ve also added some new camera tricks including portrait light and a neat looking cinematic pan video mode.

The Pixel 4a has a bigger screen and a headphone jack. Also, both phones feature a rarity these days, a physical fingerprint sensor on the back! Especially at a time when we’re wearing masks, this is a super convenient and fast way to unlock your phone.

Battery issues have been solved since the previous Pixels. I had no issues with the phone lasting the entire day. There’s even an extreme battery saver mode that will extend usage time to 48 hours in critical situations. This basically stops all activity on the phone except for the basics you choose, like phone calls, texts and perhaps the camera.

Pixel phones also have some of the most advanced call screening features available. This will help you avoid nuisance and robocalls. You can have the Google Assistant screen any incoming call that’s not in your address book. I found it pretty neat – it’s like having your own personal assistant to answer your phone for you. As the assistant asks the person why they’re calling, you see a real-time transcription of what they’re saying on the screen. If it’s important, you can pick up.

I had high hopes for this year’s Pixel but Google has delivered an underwhelming device. Sure, it still takes amazing pictures and they are among the best photos I’ve ever seen come off of a smartphone, but other phones are just way more fun and versatile these days.

Still, you shouldn’t overlook these devices if you want an Android phone with point and shoot camera that nails your standard shots easily. Also, the Android software on Google phones is the best version you can get.

They’re not that exciting, but the combination of price and features is pretty good, especially on the lower end 4a 5G. That’s the device I would actually recommend for most people at just $500. I expect it to be on sale for cheaper at times during the holiday shopping season.

The Pixel 5G is $700 and not as good of a deal when you compare it to devices with better hardware like the Samsung S20 FE, which I think is a more versatile device thanks to a bigger screen, optical zoom, and a faster processor.

The Pixel 4a 5G arrives in November and the Pixel 5 will be available October 29.

Epic Nature Photography with your Smartphone

If I were a betting man, I’d say you’re headed somewhere outdoors for the coming holiday weekend. I mean, it’s summertime and the living’s easy…get out there and make the most of it, right!?

I shoot nature, travel, wildlife, and adventure photography for a living. When I’m ensuring the best shots humanly possible, I’m bringing my fancy dancey camera (Canon 5D mark IV, if you’re wondering) and all the lenses. However, when I’m on my own adventures, I’m usually traveling fast, and light…minimal is the name of my game. Fortunately, we now all carry one of the most powerful tech devices on the face of the earth. Drumroll…it’s your smartphone.

Now trust me, I’m definitely one for a “digital detox” here and there, especially on nature outings.

However, I also really want to make memories and capture great photos when I’m out doing fun stuff with friends and family. So, chances are when I’m on local adventures here in Colorado, I’m using my iPhone for nearly all the shots I’m going to get.

If you want to go light, go minimal, but still get great shots, I’ve got a list of my five favorite techniques for getting the best and most creative images (and videos) possible on your smartphone.

#1 – Use Portrait Mode for Way More than Just Portrait

Portrait mode is amazing, and nearly all smartphones offer some version of this. Basically, your camera is using a combo of lenses and internal technology to result in a shot with a VERY shallow depth of field. The result? The thing you’re focusing on is sharp, but most everything behind and in front of it is nicely blurred. We call that blur bokeh, and it’s highly coveted in the photography world. This gives your photos that “pro” look. In the past, you had to have the very best lenses to allow you to do this, so it’s always been restricted to top-level pro photography. Now, your smartphone just gave you a level-up. Embrace it!

Sure, portrait mode is good for people shots, but try it for other things when you have a nice “foreground element” as we call it...a subject that’s prominently in front, with a nice background.

In the above shot, you can see that the background is full of nice textures…green vegetation, tropical looking, but it’s not distracting. It’s just the background, and that blur helps focus the viewer’s attention on what you’re trying to showcase…the babe with the board…

As an added bonus, the soft background blur helps make your actual subject look even sharper…a good thing in the world of photography!

I use portrait for just about anything…especially gourmet charcuterie boards while hut-hiking in Colorado backcountry!

#2 – Use that Grid on your Screen for Composition

That little grid that looks like a tic-tac-toe board on your phone camera screen is more powerful than you think. This is known as a “rule-of-thirds” grid, and it is the most powerful composition tool imaginable.

I’ve given entire lectures and designed multi-part classes on composition and the Rule of Thirds, so this is a big topic. It’s all about crazy math, and something known as the Fibonacci sequence, found everywhere in nature, from whirls of leaves on trees all the way to how the double helix of our DNA is structured…it’s the same ratio and formula (it’s worth googling if this intrigues you…).

But at its MOST basic use in photography, it can be distilled down into one line: Break your scene into thirds, group scenery or subjects into 1/3 or 2/3s of the screen, and put subjects at one of the four intersecting points instead of smack dab in the middle of the screen.

In the above photo, you can see 1) the main foreground of the grass is in the lower third, 2) the main scenery is in the middle, and 3) the sky takes up most of the upper third. In addition, I put the big mountain (Mt. Denali) right smack dab on that upper right intersection. No need to put significance to all four green dots.

I’ll be the first to say it, rules are meant to be broken. But when it comes to composing your photos, even if it’s just a beer can next to a campfire, be deliberate. Use the rule above to start out with, and if you wish to break it, be able to explain to yourself why you did it for a better photo.

#3 – Use your Polarized Sunglasses like a Polarizing Filter

This is one of the friggin’ coolest tricks I’ve found to date. In the world of photography, having a polarizing filter can produce really cool results…it minimizes glare, adds saturation to your shot, and can emphasize the edges of clouds in a really dramatic, beautiful way.

For “normal” cameras with big lenses, a sunglass frame is too small, but for smartphones, they’re perfect. Simply put your Zeal polarized sunglasses in front of your lens and boom…you’re going to likely notice your landscape shot will get a cool filter to it.

I love this technique when photographing summer thunderstorms in the distance.

#4 – Use Slo-Mo More!

The slow-motion feature of these new smartphones is amazing. This kind of tech used to be so hard to come by (and expensive!!), but now we all have it in our pockets. Brilliant.

Here are some of my favorite ways to use slo-mo when out in nature

-Swift water – try getting down to the shore and taking a few seconds of a rushing creek or river…safely, of course.

-A campfire flickering in the night

-To make epic panoramic videos of amazing landscapes (you can do so with normal video, but it’s usually kind of shakey and nailing the right speed is difficult…slo mo is incredible)

-Fireworks

-Group photos of friends and family – just ask everyone to jump up and do something goofy…it’s an instant classic!

Remember, though, that slow-motion expands the video by 6-10 times the length. So if you wish to share that super cool 10-second flickering fire, it’ll turn into a minute or more. Stick with just 2-3 seconds of whatever you’re doing.

#5 – Position yourself for the Best Light

It’s one of the most cliché things in photography, but it’s true—photography is all about light. Start getting good at using light to your advantage. Flash usually is too harsh, too fake, and just not enough…natural light is the best way to go for nature photography.

When photographing your landscape, start to really pay attention to the light…is it top-down and producing harsh shadows? (hint: not good). Or is it just rising or setting for the day and producing this nice soft lighting on the cliffs and mountains around you?

When lining up for photos of your friends in nature, put the light behind you or to your side rather than behind the people you’re photographing. You want the light on their faces.

And do so at an angle. Typically we want a nice, soft, angled light. If you were a clock, and the direction you were looking/photographing was 12, you want your light source (e.g., the sun) at either 4 or 5 o’clock, or 7 or 8 o’clock. Just slightly off to the right or left, behind you. Make sense?

In the above photo, you can tell the sun is at about my 8 o’clock.

Trust me, if you are taking photos of friends and family out in nature, asking them to slightly turn, or you moving yourself to make the best shot, you’ll look like a pro, and will have the photos to prove it.

NESTLE CERELAC CAMPAIGN

#SAVESYOUTIMEFORTHEMOREIMPORTANTTHINGS is a mock campaign created for Nestle Cerelac.

The objectives of this campaign is to present Nestle Cerelac as a quick yet healthy solution, to help parents save time on having to prepare meals for their baby to have more precious time spent with their baby.

The problem is that Nestle Cerelac is perceived to be boring. Flavors are too basic and plain: wheat, grains, bananas...

Parents tend to think if it’s so simple and plain, they might as well make from scratch.

Hence, I decided to use that as its unique selling point and brand it in a way where spending precious time to create fond memories with baby is more important.

By using Nestle Cerelac as a base, which is loaded with nutrients sufficient for babies, saves them time then having to make it from scratch as it is quick and simple to make just by adding milk formula or hot water.

The visuals would work as a poster series, capturing the fun times and memories parents can create with their little ones.

Consider a key message that is closer and clearer to the role of the product... In reality, parents would spend time with their kids with or without the product. Or, they could be too busy to spend time with kids anyway, let alone prepare a simple meal. In this way, the headline doesn't quite sell the product.

So think about what the product really solves - yes it is a quick and nutritious meal. The question is, so what? And why would people care?

Therefore perhaps think about what Cerelac (quick nutritious meal) would mean to them as a busy parent. For example, busy parents need a quick fix for their children's meals. The problem is the instant format makes them feel like it is less nutritious which makes them feel guilty for spending so little effort in preparing an important meal for their children. The challenge then is how do we make the simple act of pouring in hot water or milk formula feel like a respectable effort? Explore if this will inform better your copywriting and art direction.

2. Gabrielle Moey:

It's nice that you use another approach (sentimental element) on this as you are right, I think people generally see this as quite a boring product. I think your poster conveys that mum and kids relationship/memories very well. But looking from the branding perspective, I think your key message could be improved.

Right now I see 2 key messages - "The More Important" & "Saves you Time". Perhaps focusing on just one can help expand your vision more and help you further communicate the message to your audience.

Once you have your narrowed down key message and target audience, I'm sure that you will come up with a more clear direction of design that works for that particular audience.

Choice of visuals are warm and captures the heart of spending quality time with family.

Convenience of the product is clear & straight to the point.

Suggestions/Feedback:

Although the visuals revolve around a similar theme, try using images without watermarks on them! (Visual 3 & 4)

The messaging behind #SAVESYOUTIMEFORTHEMOREIMPORTANTTHINGS can be expanded more to highlight the values that your visuals are bringing out. Simple Tips To Get You Through Your First Overseas Trip

I recently returned from Japan, where I travelled in Tokyo, Hiroshima & Osaka. As a complete novice in travelling and being in a foreign country, I thought I’d pass along a few tips and tricks I learned.

Learn simple phrases

You would think that a lot of people do this before they travel to a foreign country, but funny enough they don’t! I made it a point before I went to at least learn the basics - hello, thank you, please, excuse me, sorry, good bye.It helped a lot, and those that I encountered appreciated a lot more that I at least gave it a go. Duolingo is a great free app that gives you a good start (and the one I used), others to consider - Babbel, OpenCulture or Busuu.

Download a translator

Before I left, I downloaded the Google Translator app & the Japanese portion offline onto my phone in advance. This meant, that for whatever reason (if my WiFi cut out etc), I’d still be able to at least communicate and ask someone for a hand if I needed. This became handy for the more complicated requests when at restaurants.

Make it easy with transport

Apple Maps was the best app I used when navigating public transport. It laid out the colour of the routes I needed to look out for, what stops I needed to get off at and even what number carriage would be the best place for me to get a seat. Google Maps was not reliable during our time in Japan.

When taking cabs, have the Japanese address handy on your phone (or even a a business card from the hotel?) and hand to the driver. Makes for so much easier!

What about the cash?

Try to have some cash on you, and pay with exact if and when you can. The 1, 5 & 10 cent coins can be a real pain to get rid of and can accumulate quickly.

While this is probably a given, but try and pre-pay for any activities you want to do in advance. Not only did this make for barely any waiting, there was no fussing around with money on the day. If you’re travelling in a group, this means you all have sorted out your split of the costs before hand and you can just focus on having a good time.

Internet

I was really mindful of the fact, I wanted to be online when I was out and about. Whether it be to access maps, look up nearby restaurants or just share photos with friends.

Pre-order your WiFi beforehand and have it delivered to your hotel. Made for much easier collection and you can return the device at the airport when you’re finished your holiday. Win/win!

The journey of self discovery cannot be underestimated when travelling overseas for the very first time. There were ups, downs, frustration, but the things I remember the most are the memories I made, the friendships I cultivated and how much I laughed. I realised how much I love wrestling on this trip, I chased my wrestling fandom all the way to Japan.

So do it. You won’t be sorry!

TLS Handshake Example: 1. A client contacts the server. 2. The client and server exchange information about the communications they intend to perform, such as the ciphers to use (SSL handshake) 3. The server transmits its certificate to the client 4. The client checks that is trusts the certification authority that issued the certificate. If it does not recognise the CA and does not get an override, the communication ends. 5. The client checks for revocation information on the certificate. If the certificate is revoked or revocation information is unavailable, then the client might attempt to obtain an override. Implementations vary on how they deal with null or unreachable CRL information, but almost all will refuse to communicate with any entity using a revoked certificate. 6. Both client and server send each other random data, which they use to make calculations separately and the derive the same session keys. Three kinds of randomly generated data are sent from one side to another:

- The “client random”: This is a random string of bytes that the client sends to the server - The “server random”: This is similar to the client random, except that the server sends it to the client - The “premaster secret”: This is yet another string of data. In some versions of the TSL handshake, the client generates this and sends it to the server encrypted with the public key; in other versions, the client and server generate the premaster secret on their own, using agreed-upon algorithm parameters to arrive at the same result.
