Cooper: She said the Attorney General would need to okay your reinstatement. Since you pled guilty to killing his predecessor, that’s… not going to happen. I’m so sorry. Liz: Yeah, so am I.

Then Red hit up the president. And while Cooper claimed not to care, I believe he actually did. Because Red did for her what Cooper could not, and he did it after Cooper slammed him for being the reason she lost it in the first place.

Liz: It was Reddington. He got the President of the United States to pardon me. How does he do that? Cooper: I don’t know. And right now, I don’t care. I’m just glad I can finally say… it’s good to have you back, Agent Keen.

Now we get to Ressler, which I find even more interesting. And I love this edit.

Ressler.

So back to my original comment about Cooper not knowing his team all that well. He didn’t know about Samar killing one of Iran’s top nuclear scientist, or of Ressler’s oxy addiction. I don’t even think he knows much about their inter-personal relationships. Like Keenler. I don’t believe he knows of Ressler’s feelings for Liz, or much their depth. Back in season three, after Liz faked her death, Samar downplayed them because Ressler’s love for Liz isn’t for her to reveal. Her being worried for him while respecting his privacy.

Samar: Do you have a minute? We can’t reach Ressler. He left, and he’s not answering his cell. Cooper: You think he went to find Reddington? Samar: Probably. He’d never admit it, but I think he took Liz’s death almost as hard as Aram did.  

Ressler’s started in 4x13 with regard to his brother. I’m sure he wanted to be there for him, but there’s a great deal to consider in that. Cooper previously having told Meera that the job comes first, second, and third. But also, Ressler’s not speaking up and demanding that time off, along with his history of putting the job above all.

Ressler: Well, can we at least put a clock on it? Cooper: Why? Is there somewhere else you have to be? Ressler: Look, I’m just saying. If it turns out we end up doing all the heavy lifting for him, maybe we shouldn’t devote too much time to it. Cooper: I understand there’s a line, Agent Ressler, and that you think he’s crossed it, but I disagree. Reddington insists his courier’s death was part of a larger threat and we’re going to investigate it.

Had it not been for his brother, I don’t think Ressler would’ve worried for Liz in this scene. I believe it was more about his frustration of not being there.

Ressler: Jesus, Keen, you just got your badge back. Liz: Because of Reddington. He needs our help. Ressler: So what? We just drop everything? We put off everything to help this guy? No, it’s too much, Keen. The guy demands too much. I’m not going in there without a warrant, and neither should you.

Then it was Cooper with regard to Reven’s case. And while I don’t know why anyone would want that case closed to begin with, it bothers me more that Cooper stands behind it while knowing how important it is to Ressler, and even so much as acts like it’s a disappearance and not a murder when he knows it’s a murder. It’s as if Cooper doesn’t care, and because they closed the case, he’s appeasing them by steering Ressler from it.

Cooper: Reven Wright was my superior and my friend, so I don’t like this any more than you, but the inquiry into her disappearance– Ressler: Reven Wright didn’t disappear. She was murdered by Laurel Hitchin. We know that. Cooper: The inquiry’s being shut down. Ressler: The president’s National Security Advisor is a murderer. Cooper: There is no evidence of that, no witnesses, no prints, no case. Ressler: The head of the justice division doesn’t just disappear. Cooper: But until we can prove it, the case is closed.

Then Cooper spoke of Ressler when Panabaker came in screaming about the 86 bodies: “Ressler was chasing after Reddington for years, trying to put him behind bars.”

Cooper’s sly approach as Ressler announced Gale being lead on the case. I believe it quite possible for Cooper to have decided to use his ace at this moment, and was using Ressler to keep up with the case. Using him, in a way, to have an inside man so he could work both sides to get it done.

Ressler: He asked me to join him. Cooper: Maybe you should. Keep up with the investigation. Stay a step ahead. Ressler: You don’t need me to stay one step ahead of his investigation, ’cause I’ll tell you right now what he’s gonna find – the truth. Cooper: What must be known eventually should be known immediately.

Ressler’s been dropping hints to Gale, playing it off while defending Liz. And it’s interesting to me, since if they do find out the truth as Ressler claims, that truth will lead to the task force. So then we’re given this side conversation between Ressler and Liz. 

Ressler: Gale thinks you’re Reddington’s informant. Liz: All the more reason for me to avoid his calls. Ressler: I don’t agree. He’s already ID’d the bodies of three Blacklisters-Geoff Perl, Alistair Pitt, Milos Kirchoff. Liz: I’m not Reddington’s informant. Ressler: So tell him. It’s not gonna be a lie. And it’ll also help hide the truth about the task force. We can’t let him find out about that.

Speaking of Cooper possibly preparing to use his ace from the start, I wanna go back to those prints on the record brush. It’s possible Cooper was upset with those prints not matching Red, so now he’s forced to continue on with his plan while being at risk himself. I also wanted to bring in this conversation with Ressler and Samar and his speaking of “The way he used to be.”

Samar: I heard about the fingerprints. You did the right thing. Ressler: Yeah, I know. I sent the prints in. Your guess as good as mine as to why they came back negative. Samar: You think Reddington has someone else at the Bureau in his pocket? Ressler: I don’t know. Maybe. But what I do know is that working with Gale- I mean, the guy’s an inspiration. He never lets anything slide. Ever. Kind of reminds me of the way I used to be. Samar: The Reven Wright case. Ressler: Laurel Hitchin murdered her. I know that in my bones, and I’m not gonna let this go until I can prove it.

Then we get to this conversation Cooper has with Ressler, which bothers me a great deal. I believe they’re planning something huge with Ressler, and I’ll get to that when I’m through. It’s as if Cooper’s using his ace, that ace being Liz as I’ve discussed before in another post. 

Ressler: I shot a Secret Service agent. Cooper: You’d been drugged, manipulated. Ressler: Well, there’s a defense for you. I mean, “I’m sorry, Your Honor, but he was manipulated.” Cooper: You were. And Dr. Krilov’s in custody negotiating an immunity deal in exchange for information about his patients. The truth will come out, and you won’t be charged. In the meantime, you’re off active duty, which is exactly what Kaplan intended. Picking off another Reddington loyalist. Ressler: I’m loyal to the task force. Cooper: I know, which is why this terrible situation may have a silver lining. Ressler: Gale. Cooper: You’re free to work with him full time. He thinks Reddington’s feeding Keen intel on criminals. That in exchange, she’s keeping him a step ahead of us. And you need to keep it that way.

Then we were given Samar’s beautiful phone call to Ressler because she knows all about Keenler. She’s known for a long time now. Gale, finding out the truth because of Ressler’s love for Liz. 

Ressler: Ressler. Samar: Liz is in trouble. Ressler: Talk to me. Samar: I know where she is and I’ve got backup. But you need to be there. Forget the suspension. Ressler: Look, just text me the address, alright?
