ISUZU ENGINE REVIEW

The first Isuzu SUVs appeared in 1985, under the hood of which were different engines. Some of them were weak, others, even though they were not made in Japan, were of high quality and reliability.
Three ISUZU diesel engines should be mentioned in particular, as the diesel engines are one of the two main areas, where the company has been successful. Exactly Isuzu diesel engines were and still are very popular.
Isuzu Bighorn belongs to the first generation of cars that are equipped with 4-cylinder in-line diesel engine, with a capacity of 2.8L and 110hp. Its designation is 4JB1-T. With the same engine Isuzu Bighorn was sold in America under the name Trooper.
In 1991, the 4JB1-T was replaced by the updated 4G-G2, which was also a 4-cylinder diesel engine, but with a 3.1L displacement, 120 hp. It was also a 3.1 litre, 120 hp 4-cylinder diesel engine. The 4JB1-T was also available for ISUZU Mu three-door model.
These two engines are similar to each other, with high quality and reliability.  These engines were built using the most modern technical solutions at the time and differed in combustion chamber volume, and consequently power.  Both engines had aluminum cylinder heads with a single camshaft, air-cooled turbocharger and belt-driven gas distribution. Thanks to the turbocharger, these engines were very tractive at low rpm. Turbines of these diesel engines were different, because they create low pressure at low RPM and this ensured long and trouble-free operation. The design of the engines did not have a balance shafts and even so they are not very noisy and vibration.  
The 4JB1-T and 4JG2 did not overheat, even though they were operated at high rpm for extended periods. Compared to them, Toyota or Mitsubishi diesels, were prone to overheating during continuous operation at high rpm, when high diesel compression damages the valve jumpers, through which the mercury escapes.
Engines from ISUZU have an enormous life span, it is only necessary to follow their technical condition: timely change of oil, filters and timing.
However, it is a common knowledge that everything breaks down and breakages often occur due to low quality diesel fuel, which leads to replacement of injectors and flushing of the fuel system.
The turbocharger also fails, mostly due to premature shutdown of the ignition after stopping.  This is unacceptable when operating these brands of diesels. Repairing the turbine is expensive, and replacing it with a new one is 2-3 times more expensive than repairing it. It's also worth noting that repair kits for the 4JG2 are an order of magnitude more expensive than for the 4JB1.
Both engines have an excellent ratio of power and reliability, but the cost of ISUZU units and components repair is sometimes much higher than similar diesel engines from other manufacturers. All this is compensated by high reliability of these units.
In 1998, the company Isuzu began production of in-line 4-cylinder diesel engine 4JX1 with a capacity of 159 hp, 3.0 liters. This engine had a torque of 330 Nm at 2000 rpm and was used on updated Bighorn.  
The twin lobe, 16 valve 4JX1 was similar in design to its predecessors with an intercooler and turbocharger.
The 4JX1 differed from its counterparts with a new Common Rail injection system, which provided a significant increase in horsepower. Common Rail Injection allows for higher pressure upstream of the spray nozzles, allowing for finer atomization of the fuel, which in turn leads to a greatly improved combustion quality. This system is equipped with two pumps, the first of which can create the necessary pressure of 80-90 bar. before starting the engine, and when starting the engine the fuel goes to the second one. The second pump is a combination pump, combining oil and fuel pumps and of course has a more complex design. By creating a pressure of 300 bar the mixture is pumped into the fuel rail and from there it is injected into the combustion chambers via nozzles. Injection is performed in two phases - warming up the combustion chambers and injection of the required dosage of fuel.
The 4JX1 injectors are controlled by a processor that injects in two phases: preheating the chambers and injecting a "working" dose of fuel.
With Common Rail technology, the engine's power output has increased significantly, along with lower emissions. The 4JX1 is quieter and nearly as quiet as a gasoline engine.
The 4JX1 requires only clean, quality oil due to the Common Rail system. DIESEL LEICHTLAUF 10W-40 HD oil is recommended. This is an anti-friction oil that is designed to withstand the increased fouling of these diesels.
It is recommended to change the oil frequently (preferably every 5 thousand km), even in spite of the effective cleaning. This is due to the poor quality of diesel fuel.
Common 4JX1 malfunctions include:
improperly installed timing,
Injector solenoid control circuit overload due to fouled atomizer, resulting from use of low-quality fuel, and failure of one of the two sensors: crankshaft position sensor, and camshaft position sensor, or if a signal from the hydraulic oil pressure sensor is present,
Some problems are also caused by the electronic injection control because certain types of faults are not diagnosed by the scanner.
In general, the engine shows good characteristics, as well as other diesels produced by Isuzu. It is quite powerful, moderate fuel consumption and meets modern environmental standards. However, despite the above advantages. Operation of the engine in Ukraine is complicated by low quality of diesel fuel and the high cost of some spare parts. Common Rail injection system allows you to use only expensive original accessories, which are extremely rare to find on the open market.
ISUZU (Isuzu) is known not only for its cars and SUVs, but also for its reliable diesel engines for trucks. One and the same ISUZU truck can be equipped with up to 5 different diesel engines. As a rule, the ISUZU diesels are not turbocharged, but this does not affect the power, which is increased by the volume. Thus, on ISUZU ELF trucks is 4HF1 engine, which has different volumes.
The four-cylinder 4HF1 has established itself as a powerful and highly reliable engine, which mileage reaches 1 million km. Basically these engines have a mechanical injection system, easy to operate, spare parts are always available.  Since 1996 these engines were equipped with electronic Common Rail, which significantly increased the engine power, and since 1999 almost all 4HF1 engines are equipped with Common Rail systems.
