What happens when you take the rich, layered storytelling of Final Fantasy 7, interesting characters, fantastical environments, entertaining gameplay, toss into a 2002 fan fiction generator seasoned heavily with Tetsuya Nomura and hit blend? The unholy coalescence spat out will unmistakably become Dirge of Cerberus.⁣ ⁣ To quote an exquisite Let’s Play from TheDarkId, “So, is the game fun, at least? - No. No it is not. It is poorly paced, has barebones gunplay, the controls are awkward, there are lukewarm RPG elements, and it's riddled with cutscenes.”⁣ ⁣ Every single original character in this bizzarro spin off universe such Shelke, Shalua, Nero, Weiss, Azul, Rosso, and Grimoire are shallow, out of place and crank the ridiculous meter to astronomical levels. The dialog is extremely superfluous and manages to reach turbo insanity near the finale. It is an insult to FF7 and Nomura’s story telling influence has slowly seeped into the FF7 Remake and inevitably Part 2 – Rebirth coming out in the near future.⁣ ⁣ The sad and painful realization is at the end of the day, further down, deep down, there exists a small amount of decency and charm screaming to be uncovered. Wonderful, detailed set pieces, excellent animations, thoughtful camera angles, unique character designs, exquisite sound and folly work, thematic and sharp UI layout and overall presentation all exist beneath this rotten, FF-adjacent amalgamation of storytelling sludge.⁣ ⁣ Composed by Masashi Hamauzu, the soundtrack is a beacon of silver lining. “Silent Edge”, “Counteroffensive”, “Trespasser”, “Turks 101”, “Underground Complex”, Wild Pack”, “Lucrecia's Research” are excellent and harken back to signature melodies, motifs and styles found in the FFXIII OST.⁣ ⁣ Play this game at your own peril. It will tarnish your ideals and challenge what you thought you knew about the FF7 universe. You have been warned.⁣ ⁣ #digitalthoughts #squareenix #squaresoft #retrogaming #gaming #videogames #action #jrpg #finalfantasy #finalfantasyvii #dirgeofcerberus #deepground #playstation #ps2 #480i #crtgaming #background #sony #playstation #ファイナルファンタジー #レトロゲーム https://www.instagram.com/p/Cr1k-UqvfIp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Audio
I really liked the ending of my silly camcorder roadtrip movie, so I made an improved mix of just that part. An OST track if you will.
As mentioned in the video description I scored the whole thing exclusively with Logic Loops, because it’s the most fun way to score things with low stakes. But you can really do a whole lot with just Logic Loops.

i. just realized that i think of sd as 4:3 and hd as 16:9 instead of as 480i (or less than 720p) and 1080i (or at least 720p). because all i could notice when the transition was happening was a change in aspect ratio

Vigilante 8 is one of those games with hopelessly unlocked framerates like Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Shadow of the Colossus. If you have the CPU to emulate the target hardware at a 400% overclock, you can get it running at 60FPS natively!

I did one of those fan edits of Muppet Family Christmas because the US DVD is missing scenes. I wasn't going to share it, but there are 4 other versions on the Internet Archive that I think are done wrong.
The big advantage to mine is I did a really nice deinterlace to bring the 480i footage to a proper 60fps.
Just watch out for the Archive's auto generated mp4 that is only 640x480. Kinda throws away my cleanup work.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the future city of Monsteropolis, the use of robot labor has helped civilization grow more than ever before. At the forefront of this technology are Dr. Light and his assistant Dr. Wily, who are commissioned to build six robots to handle a variety of specific tasks. They are named Bombman, Gutsman, Iceman, Cutman, Elecman, and Fireman, in reference to their individual prime functions. Dr. Wily, however, has bigger plans and chooses to take control of the robots and let loose destruction in a bid for world control. Dr. Light fights back with the best tool he has, an experimental human-like robot, Rockman aka Mega Man, who had been tested to perform cleaning duties. Now properly armed, it's up to Rockman/Mega Man to take on the maverick robots, fight his way into Dr. Wily's castle, and end this madness.
Originally debuting on the Famicom, the Rockman Complete Works series contained enhanced 32-bit PlayStation ports of the first six Rockman/Mega Man titles (Mega Man 1 - 6) with extra bonus features including freshly arranged soundtracks, a new user interface, a hints system, and some post-game bonus content. Priced at 2,800 JPY each, the Rockman Complete Works range were eventually ported to the PlayStation 2, Game Cube and XBOX (including Mega Man 7, Mega Man 8, and two Mega Man arcade games) by Atomic Planet under the title "Mega Man Anniversary Collection", released exclusively in the West. The PS2 and Game Cube versions were released simultaneously in 2004, and truth be told, it has to be said that Atomic Planet did not do a good job with the PS2, Game Cube and XBOX ports. The PS2 version only supports 480i resolution, has most of the Rockman Complete Works features stripped, and has very noticeable volume issues. Plus, the PS2 version forces you to use the DualShock 2's analog sticks for character movement. No D-Pad action.
But it's not just the PS2 build that has issues. The Game Cube version does not feature remixed music at all, owing to the limited storage capacity of Game Cube discs which top out at 1.4 gigabytes per disc, and worse, famously has the backwards controls where the B button on the Game Cube controller is for "Jump", and the giant A button on said controller is to "Fire" the blaster gun. It's a shame really, but Atomic Planet wasn't done yet. In 2005, the XBOX version of Mega Man Anniversary Collection was released. The XBOX version has the same audio issues as the PS2 build in regard to audio distortion at high volume, but it supports 480p resolution. But the XBOX version also introduces graphical glitches that are not present in the Game Cube or PS2 version. Mega Man Anniversary Collection is a backward-compatible title for the XBOX 360, but when you play it on an XBOX 360, it has even WORSE graphical glitches!
*sigh*... Rant aside, Rockman's graphics aren't exceptional, but at least they look clean and well-defined. You'll face a wide array of enemies, but most are small, and some are as simple as floating blocks. The game provides unlimited continues, so you can always pick up right where you left off. Rockman's tunes are catchy and should bring back fond memories for long-time NES/Famicom players. It may not look like much, but Rockman's well-conceived gameplay has managed to withstand the test of time. The real meat and potatoes for this PlayStation port are indeed the arranged soundtrack and the Navi mode which actually gives the game a fresh new HUD and actually eliminates sprite flicker! How about that for cool?
Oh, and I have to make mention of the fact it does support the Sony PocketStation memory card gadget thingy. Sony's rip-off of the Dreamcast's VMU actually contained some minigames that you could transfer to from select PS1 games, and this game definitely belongs there.

What did you use to convert the digital video to analog for your OTGW tape? I'm a former video tape archivist and I've only ever gone the opposite direction :x
I essentially tricked my PC into thinking a VCR was a monitor, so it would send its video out into the VCR. I fine tuned the video output settings with the Nvidia drivers to make it a little crisper (this is also paired with the project being rendered at 480i to fit the format). I added a little time at the beginning and end of the video to allow time for me to stick in a blank tape and hit record.
For the orange tape, I did all that, THEN I took apart the tape I was recording on (black) and switched out the inner reels with a copy of the Rugrats Movie (orange). I’m not too big of a fan of the orange one, considering orange is reserved specifically for Nickelodeon stuff, but it looked really good when viewed in the Halloween mindset.
For my future projects, I would love to do:
- Scott Pilgrim on a red VHS
- ITSV with a black tape and a red latch
- Steven Universe Season 1 across 4 tapes (due to its length) in Yellow, Blue, White, and Pink.
- Steven Universe the Movie in Pink
- The FNAF movie on a white VHS (white was usually reserved for very young children’s media like Barney and Little Einstein, so I think it would really fit the Chuck E Cheese aesthetic)
I have a HUGE respect for physical media archivists, that’s an awesome line of work. I have an old really long VHS recording of when they aired They Might be Giants on the series finale of Blues Clues on Nick Jr, and I’ve been meaning to teach myself how to digitize it correctly. I’ve made digital recordings of it using my VCR, but I want to make a higher quality scan.

Been just under 3 years but safe to say the "hyperfixation" phase of my shera fandom membership is over. I know it's over because I no longer have the desire to draw the characters in Situations. Ive been rolling over into passive fixations instead.
Recently the closest to a hyperfixation has been crt gaming. I kept having dreams of getting a crt. So i got one. It's a small 480i tv so not very great but it scratches the itch! Maybe one day ill get a bigger better tv, or a crt monitor, but those things are going out of commission fast so maybe not. I wish theyd make new ones. Id be willing to pay big bucks for a new progressive scan crt with lots of input options, though thatd probably make it an edtv and it wouldn't be legal for Smash tournaments due to input lag lmao.
Ive also been watching jojos bizarre adventure with Kim. The music in this show is such a banger that I cant stop thinking of it. Shame they seemed to stop the licensed ending songs after the start of part 3. Roundabout and Walk Like An Egyption are hits.
I don't think itll become a hyperfixation but I do want to draw because of it. The jojos art and poses are so fabulous.

Amanda Young's hair, ranked

Saw, reverse bear trap
A bit of a rat's nest, but you can tell that on a better day she is actually trying to look good with this style. I love the concept, but I don't think it gets quite fucked up enough from the frenzy of her game to nail the execution. 8/10
Tumblr media
Saw, police interrogation
Another great look that nails what it's trying to do narratively. Pulled back into a ponytail very tight, very neat. It's an overcorrection to her previous hedonistic lifestyle and an attempt to pull herself together. A few loose strands tell us that it's not quite working. 8/10
Tumblr media
Saw II, nerve gas house
Love that she found this look for herself. Rock'n'roll, baby. You girlboss those poor fucks into appreciating their lives. 10/10
Tumblr media
Saw II, game over
While I love the outfit and will forever regret not being a twenty-something party girl in the early 00's and stealing this look, I'm not a fan of the bowl cut. There was an attempt at a dichotomy but unfortunately she came out looking like she pays for groceries via checkbook from the neck up. 4/10
Tumblr media
Saw III, shithole
A trimmed-down version of her main Saw II look, I enjoy how this style appears more practical for fighting off test subjects in a pig mask while still keeping a bit of that 2005 edge to it. 9/10
Tumblr media
Saw III, hair down
Love this, I love her. To me, this is Amanda, the Jigsaw Killer. She has evolved. The hair is grown back out, but neater this time. She's taken John's philosophy and fit it into a mold of her own design. 10/10
Tumblr media
Saw III, hair up
I appreciate how comfortable Amanda looks in this style, and it also shocked me to discover that this woman does, in fact, have a layered haircut (you must understand that I initially viewed this series at 480i on a CRT television). 8/10
Tumblr media
Saw VI, Cecil simp
Hasn't showered in a month. Do not love that for her. Does a great job at showing that this is Amanda at absolute rock bottom. 7/10
Tumblr media
Saw VI, rehabilitated
I do not even know what she was going for here. Beehive-ass hair. 1/10
Tumblr media
Saw X
This might be the worst hair I have ever seen. 11-year-old boy at the middle school prom cut. 0/10
