Taila Santos vs Joanne Wood
What a crazy 14 months it has been in the flyweight division. We've seen the arrival of new top contenders like Erin Blanchfield, Manon Fiorot, Maycee Barber, and Natalia Silva. The arguably best women's fighter in history, Valentina Shevchenko, lost her title in an upset of the year contender against Alexa Grasso. And if we look back on it, it all started with the performance of Brazilian Taila Santos (19-2) against Valentina Shevchenko.
Depending on who you are, you might actually see Santos as the rightful UFC women's flyweight champion. That's how far she pushed former champion Valentina in their fight back in June 2022. Her size and grappling prowess was winning rounds and forcing Shevchenko into uncomfortable positions. If not for a headbutt that would shatter the orbital of Taila in the 3rd round, we might have had a new champion. Sadly, between waiting for her orbital to heal and VISA issues, Santos hasn't fought in 14 months.
She's set to return this Saturday (August 26) though as the UFC heads to Singapore for UFC Fight Night: Holloway vs. Korean Zombie. She will face off against fellow rising flyweight contender Erin Blanchfield (11-1).

Happy 94th Birthday, Professor Wang Gungwu! This photo was taken during my archival and field research at the East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore (2005). Professor Wang received his B.A. (Hons) and M.A. degrees from the University of Malaya in Singapore and his Ph.D. at the University of London (1957).
His teaching career took him from the University of Malaya (Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, 1957-1968, Professor of History 1963-68) to The Australian National University, where he was Professor and Head of the Division of Pacific and Asian History (1968-1986) and Director, Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies (1975-1980).
From 1986 to 1995, he was Vice-Chancellor (Head) of the University of Hong Kong. He was the Director of the East Asian Institute of the NUS from 1997 to 2007 and founding Chair of the NUS Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in 2004.
He is a Commander of the British Empire (CBE, 1991), Fellow and former President of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Science, Member of Academia Sinica, Honorary Member of the Chinese Academy of Social Science. For his distinguished achievements as an expert on the history of China and Southeast Asia, he was conferred the Fukuoka Asian Cultural Prize (1991), the Tang Prize (2007), and Singapore's Meritorious Medal (2013) and Distinguished Service Order (2020).
He became the 3rd person to be named a University Professor by the NUS (2007). He received honorary doctorates from the University of Melbourne (1997), the University of Hong Kong (2002), the University of Cambridge (2009), and the NUS (2022).
During his vice-chancellorship at the University of Hong Kong, higher education in Hong Kong expanded enormously, and the University accepted its highest-ever intake of students. A firm believer in the benefits of globalization, Professor Wang strongly encouraged international activities and exchanges with overseas institutions. Under his support, the University established the University of Hong Kong Foundation for Educational Development and Research, the first of its kind at the local tertiary education level, to foster stronger links with the community and enhance the University's capacity for teaching and research.
In 2005, through Dr. Wang’s recommendation, I became a visiting scholar at the NUS Asia Research Institute (ARI). While working on my book Migrations and Meditations (2016), I discovered that Dr. Wang authored Pulse (1950), the very first published collection of poetry in English in Malaysia and Singapore—long before he became an eminent scholar. He recalls visiting UP Diliman in 1950 to attend a creative writing workshop conducted by Philippine National Artist for Literature N.V.M. Gonzalez. Dr. Wang remembers his contemporaries, notably the iconic Filipino poet and dramatist Virginia Reyes Moreno. He also recalls that with funding and support from American companies and institutions, many Filipino writers were fortunate to gain access to creative writing and literature programs in American universities.
Dr. Wang turned 94 on 9 October 2024. To honor his legacy, NUS Press released a new and more affordable paperback edition of Home is Not Here (2018), his memoir: https://buff.ly/4bST3ZC

Description: Even as a boy growing up amid the green hills of rural Pennsylvania, Robert W. Black knew he was destined to become a Ranger. With their three-hundred-year history of peerless courage and independence of spirit, Rangers are a uniquely American brand of soldier, one foot in the military, one in the wilderness—and that is what fired Black’s imagination. In this searing, inspiring memoir, Black recounts how he devoted himself, body and soul, to his proud service as an elite U. S. Army Ranger in Korea and Vietnam—and what those years have taught him about himself, his country, and our future.Born at the start of the Great Depression, Black grew up on a farm at a time of great hardship but also tremendous national determination. He was a kid who toughened up fast, who learned the hard way to rely on his strength and his wits, who saw the country go to war with Germany and Japan and wept because he was too young to serve. As soon as the army would take him, Black enlisted. And as soon as he could muscle his way in, he became a Ranger. As a private first class in the 82d Airborne Division headquarters, Black withstood the humiliations of enlisted service in the peacetime brown-shoe army. When the Korean War began, he volunteered and trained to be an Airborne Ranger. In Korea, this young warrior, his mind and body bursting with the lusts of adolescence, grew up fast, literally in the line of fire. In clean, vivid prose, Black describes the hell of giving his all for a country that lacked the political resolve to give its all to a war against the North Koreans and the Chinese. If Korea was frustrating, Vietnam was maddening. The heart of this book is devoted to the years of action that Black saw in Long An Province starting in 1967. Black writes of the perplexity of collaborating with South Vietnamese officers whose culture and motives he never fully understood; he conjures up the sudden shock of the Tet Offensive and the daily horror of seeing fellow soldiers and innocent civilians slaughtered—sometimes by stray bullets, often by carelessness or treachery. Vietnam challenged everything Black had come to believe in and left him totally unprepared for the hostility he would face when he returned to a war-weary America. Written with extraordinary candor and passion, A Ranger Born is the memoir of a man who dedicated the best of his life to everything that is great and enduring about America. At once intimate in its revelations and universal in its themes, it is a book with profound relevance to our own troubled time in history. From the Hardcover edition

“Singapore with a singaBORE main” UFC Fight Night: Askren vs Maia preview
Joey
October 20th, 2019
When the UFC signed up to do a multi million dollar stretch of shows in Singapore, I have to imagine this wasn't QUITE on the menu. This show isn't awful but compared to what's coming down the pike with the MSG card, the Vegas PPV, a really solid card in South Korea and such, this card is only worth discussing due to its early start time. Still there's good stuff to discuss here! It's a nifty 11 fight card starting early in the morning with some good HW fights on it and an "intriguing" main event. Let's see what happens.
Fights: 11
Debuts: Loma Lookboonmee, Don'tale Mayes
Fight Changes/Injury Cancellations: 4 (Karol Rosa vs Julia Avila CANCELLED/Jarjis Danho vs Greg Hardy CANCELLED/Yan Xionan OUT, Randa Markos IN vs Ashley Yoder/Brad Tavares vs Ian Heinisch CANCELLED)
Headliners (fighters who have either main evented or co-main evented shows in the UFC): 6 (Demian Maia, Stevie Ray, Michael Johnson, Beneil Dariush, Sergey Pavlovich, Randa Markos)
Fighters On Losing Streaks in the UFC:
Fighters On Winning Streaks in the UFC: 7 (Demian Maia, Muslim Salikhov, Laureano Staropoli, Beneil Dariush, Maurice Green, Ashley Yoder, Sergey Pavlovich)
Main Card Record Since Jan 1st 2017 (in the UFC): 17-19-1
Ben Askren- 1-1 Demian Maia- 3-3 Michael Johnson- 2-3 Stevie Ray- 2-3 Muslim Salikhov- 2-1 Laureano Staropoli- 2-0 Beneil Dariush- 2-2-1 Frank Camacho- 2-3 Cyril Gane- 1-0 Don'Tale Mayes- 0-0
Fights By Weight Class (yearly number here):
Lightweight- 3 (69) Heavyweight- 3 (34) Welterweight- 2 (64) Women’s Strawweight- 2 (28) Featherweight- 1 (53)
Women’s Flyweight- (31) Middleweight- (40) Light Heavyweight- (39) Bantamweight- (53) Flyweight- (15) Women’s Featherweight- (8) Women’s Bantamweight- (18)
2019 Number Tracker
Debuting Fighters (37-58-1)- Loma Lookboonmee, Don'tale Mayes
Short Notice Fighters (28-36)- Randa Markos
Second Fight (52-35)- Movsar Evloev, Raphael Pessoa, Ciryl Gane, Rafael Fiziev
Cage Corrosion (Fighters who have not fought within a year of the date of the fight) (22-38-1)-
Undefeated Fighters (38-37-2)- Ciryl Gane, Movsar Evloev
Fighters with at least four fights in the UFC with 0 wins over competition still in the organization (11-8)- Frank Camacho, Stevie Ray
Weight Class Jumpers (Fighters competing outside of the weight class of their last fight even if they’re returning BACK to their “normal weight class”) (29-22)- Michael Johnson
Twelve Precarious Ponderings
1- I've seen some folks who take the Askren vs Maia booking as some sort of punishment for Askren because it's an early morning show overseas BUT let's be 100% fair and point out that Askren spent the better part of the last 4-5 years fighting in Asia and SHOULD have some semblance of name recognition. In this case he probably serves more good as the main eventer on a random Asian show than he does as the 3rd or 4th fight in MSG or what have you. I mean if he doesn't then why did you even sign him?
2- Who is this main event appealing to? I can understand SOME genuine appeal in this fight for the grappling purists out there I suppose but even that feels limited. I just think if you took 100 MMA fans and brought them into a room and said "Would you like five rounds of Askren vs Maia?", the slimmest of slim percentage of them would say "Oh man, love it. Bring me all of that." It's a fine main event pitting name value vs name value and I guess style vs style but the appeal feels so limited. I really hope this isn't what that group in Singapore expected to be paying for when they made this multi-million dollar deal with the UFC for the next five years or so.
3- Even with a win, is Askren officially "done" in terms of flirtations as a #1 contender? Usually a win over Demian Maia takes you right to #1 contender status. In this instance, it feels like Askren is sort of kind of in the Vitor range where anything short of a string of stoppages will keep him firmly from the title picture.
4- Is Michael Johnson vs Stevie Ray the most random co-main of 2019? I can't imagine it's got a lot of competition for the spot.
5- Laureano Staropoli vs Muslim Salikhov is a really interesting fight for a variety of reasons. For starters, Staropoli has real potential to become yet another solid Argentinian fighter in the UFC's fold. He's 2-0 and coming off a decision win over Thiago Alves in Brazil. He's a balanced striker who seems to excel in those back and forth firefights where he can outlast his opposition. Thats going to be a problem against Muslim Salikhov who is beginning to find his groove in the UFC. Every second this fight stays standing and at a pace befitting of Muslim is a second closer to losing in a most brutal fashion. Can Staropoli wrestle more than we've seen him do so far?
6- If I had a fighter like Frank Camacho, I'm not sure that I'd put him up against a guy who is primarily coming to wrestle with Beneil Dariush. Dariush is going to try to Drew Dobert it except he can't strike as good as Dober so we're setting up for a lot of wall and stall. Thumbs down.
7- If you're not hot on heavyweights, lemme chit chat with you a bit about how some of these HW fights are pretty good:
With the UFC talking about doing a show in France in 2020, Ciryl Gane figures to be an impressive dude to follow. The muay thai stud/Ngannou sparring buddy won his UFC debut without much issue and the French born fighter will be given ample opportunities to show out. Dontale Mayes is the rare THREE time DWCS talent who lost his first fight but won the next two by stoppage. Mayes' upside may be in a role like this as a hard hitting prospect tester. One thing which stood out was how much weight he lost between all three Contenders Series fights.
Sergey Pavlovich vs Maurice Greene is a REALLY interesting fight. Mo Greene was a bit of a gimmick who got the villain edit on TUF but he's fought three times while the winner of the show has pretty much disappeared. Greene hits really hard, attacks from awkward angles, doesn't have good wrestling but has some wacky BJJ off of his back and so far his cardio hasn't been awfl. On the other hand, Sergey Pavlovich has gone from Russian prospect du jour to "maybe he's good?" UFC fighter. Pavlovich's first win was against Junior Albini and Mo Greene's best win as of right now is Junior Albini so here we are. Good evenly matched fight on paper.
Raphael Pessoa vs Jeff Hughes kicks off the show and Huges was considered to be one of the top HW prospects prior to getting into the UFC. To this point he was upset by Maurice Greene (who he had beaten on the regional circuit) and looked to be potentially en route to getting slop stopped by Todd Duffee prior to an eye poke no contest. This is like the bottom of the barrel in terms of opposition and if Hughes loses this one, his career is in deep doo doo.
8- Speaking of Maurice Greene, can we just pretend that he won the TUF season if he wins this fight vs Pavlovich?
9- Enrique Barzola vs Mosvar Evloev is an interesting fight because it pits arguably the most exciting Russian prospect in the UFC under 155 lbs against a really solid featherweight who can do some stuff to challenge Evloev. Barzola's a superb wrestler who has endless pressure and cardio while Evloev has excelled thus far in the UFC as a slower paced grappling machine despite showing more on Russia's regional circuit. We haven't seen Barzola do much counter wrestling and Evloev figures to test that in spades IF he fights like he did in his debut.
10- Randa Markos is still relevant at 115 lbs which feels like a credit to her but also a knock on the speed (or lack thereof) by which this division is advancing.
11- Who has the cardio advantage between Maia and Askreen going into the championship rounds? Gotta be Ben, right?
12- Is this the most irrelevant card of the year?

2016 in a nutshell
It's time to make bawi! I tried to go back to 2016, and I realized it was then when I was slowly becoming busier by the day, and posts weren't as often as it used to.
So, here's a post to wrap up 2016!
(I based my 2016 on my tweets since I used to be more active in Twitter)
2016 was probably the start of the hardcore college days. I was already in my 3rd year, and if I'm not mistaken, it was the year where the majors are at its highest number of units, so I was overload. Plus, we had SAD 2 (Software Engineering class) in the first semester so we had to implement our SAD 1 proposal, and we had Thesis 1 in the second semester.

Aside from that, I was a part of the dance crew of our division when I was in college, so I often competed in a lot of dance competitions especially in school events. I had to juggle dance practices and acads from June to August.
But ya girl was awarded as one of the five most outstanding 2nd year students in the university! (Although I was in 3rd year, the evaluation was based on my performance when I was in 2nd year.
By December, we went to Manila for a programming competition at Ateneo de Manila University and although it was so hard, we got into the top 10 Philippine Teams!
Celebrated my Christmas and New Year with my family and relatives in Singapore! It was actually my first time to travel outside the Philippines for a vacation. Definitely one for the books!
That pretty much sums up my 2016. I just realized it's 3 years ago.

He recalls visiting Manila in 1950 to attend a creative writing workshop conducted by Philippine National Artist for Literature N.V.M. Gonzalez. Dr. Wang remembers his contemporaries, notably the iconic Filipino poet and dramatist Virginia Reyes Moreno. He also recalls that with funding and support from American companies and institutions, many Filipino writers were fortunate to gain access to creative writing and literature programs in American universities.
Dr. Wang is now 92 years old.

Al Wehdah FC - Singapore’s Band of Brothers (Original Form)
About
Al Wehdah FC is a completely All-Arabian social soccer team that comprises of Singapore’s very own Arab community all of whom are mainly Hadrami from Hadramawt-Yemen descendants. The Hadramawt-Yemen descendants are made up of Baalwies (Syed’s) and Masyaikhs (Sheikhs).
Their name - Al Wehdah, derived from a local community organization called The Arab Association Singapore, which is also known as Al-Wehdah Al-Arabiah bi Singhafura or Al-Wehdah for short.
Formed on the 11th of November in 1946, this community organization has been actively participating in numerous Donation Drives, Bursary Award Ceremonies and even Campaigns like Eidul Adha’s “Gift of Love”, to name a few.
Its namesake albeit one that focuses solely around soccer and nothing more, Al Wehdah FC, was formed a couple years after the organization kick started.
Although the exact year remains a mystery to many including their current players, there’s a black and white photograph extracted from Singapore’s Berita Harian showcased an All-Arabian line-up clad in a somewhat vintage football gear coupled with the words “Pasukan Bolasepak Al-Wehdah Al-Arabiah bersama dengan jurulatih mereka” which translates to “The team Al-Wehdah Al-Arabiah with their coach”.
The origins of this picture was shrouded in mystery. It surfaced across one of their social media platforms after a user chanced upon it. Nonetheless, it’s able to serve as a pivotal evidence over how this team had existed decades back, long before color photography entered the picture.
Despite existing for years, it may come as a surprise to some over how this team had actually been inactive for a certain period of time.
Just like their aforementioned history, the reasons that brought upon this period of inactivity is a conundrum. Rumors has it that it may be due to work commitments or other personal engagements.
Regardless, this particular period has long been shelved aside to make way for a reincarnated Al Wehdah FC team comprising of both old and new players.
A team that makes one question if their previous state of inactivity was merely a tale of fiction judging by how consistently active they’ve been in the social soccer scene these days.
The Players, Uniform & Logo
Their team now has a potpourri of both old and young players alike making their age range stretch from as young as 17 to 40.
Their determination to make this team a promising one is first seen via their uniform and logo revamps.
In 2017, they had a new set of jerseys with a completely blue ensemble. Today, Al Wehdah FC can be seen donning either their all red or white/red kits.
Each jersey featured the community organizations symbol, a miniature Singapore flag at the upper left hand corner along with their brand new logo.
This logo was a tricky one for they had to think of what reflects them as players and how they fare on the field.
The outcome?
A lion.

And not just an ordinary lion. It’s a lion equipped with a mane that features the crescent and five stars from Singapore’s flag thus making this logo self-explanatory as to what it represents.
The Matches
Al Wehdah FC is currently actively participating in two tournaments - Social Football League (SFL) and the all new Noah League Cup. The latter only started three weeks ago on the 3rd of January, 2019 featuring other teams like El Retador pitting against another called Smileys FC. More information on when Al Wehdah FC will compete in this Noah League Cup and against which team will be revealed soon.
On the other hand, they’re currently placed forth on Division 3’s SFL scoreboard.
Apart from official tournaments like the aforementioned ones, Al Wehdah FC also organizes and participates in friendlies on a regular basis.
The most recent friendly match of theirs was done on 2018’s Christmas Eve and was called the International Friendly Xmas Special. It involved a team of Algerian players from Maghribe FC and just like their other tournaments, it was free for all.
That match kicked off around 9.30pm and went all the way to extra time and penalties. It finally ended with a satisfying draw of 4-4.
An active veteran albeit not too ancient player who also happens to be one of Al Wehdah FC’s goal scorers in the International Friendly Xmas Special - Syed Mohamed Alkaff, was keen on providing more information about his teams activities.

“Most of the tournaments are based in Singapore, basically for this team, it is just us Arab boys getting together for the love of football and togetherness.”, he explained.
When asked if Al Wehdah FC’s matches are, like the friendlies and aforementioned tournaments, strictly Singapore-based, he said, “We’ve had overseas tournaments in Malacca which happens yearly. 2017 and 2018. The Arab Association of Malacca, “Al-Wafaa”, were the main organizers for 2 years running and gets together all the Arab boys from different parts of Malaysia to represent their states. We were invited too.”, he elaborated.
He was referring to the annual Arab Futsal Cup. Their participation for this particular cup in 2018 appeared fruitful for they emerged seven hundred dollars richer after securing third spot which was no mean feat what with the strife competition around them.

Arab Futsal Cup 2018 also shared a special place in the hearts of Al Wehdah FCs players for one of them, Wafy Bentaleb, for whom they touted as “our one and only Mo Salah”, became the top scorer of this tournament and was awarded a Golden Boot Plaque thanks to his eight goals.

Syed Mohamed Alkaff

Syed Mohamed Alkaff has always been interested in sports. He was known as the boy who is adapt with his feet.
Now, at the age of 28, he is a Recruitment Consultant who knows no such thing as ‘being tired’, especially when football is involved. Juggling with work, personal life and of course, Al Wehdah FC league games and friendly matches, it’s a wonder how he manages to handle all that without either jeopardizing one of them or being drained one bit.

He first joined Al Wehdah FC when he was merely 16 years old.
“It was around the period of time when the team got “revived” after years of inactivity.”, he quipped.
Fast forward to 2019 sees him as a loyal veteran player who has been steadily featured as one of Al Wehdah FC’s key players and even has a hand in managing the teams affairs.
Adel Alkaff
Al Wehdah FC is also known to be forward thinking. They already have a list of players that are slated to join their team in the near future. One of them is none other than Syed Mohamed Alkaff’s very own cousin, Adel Alkaff.
This 29 years old man has had experiences of playing with Al Wehdah FC as a goalkeeper but he did so on a rather inconsistent basis due to work and other personal commitments.

Nonetheless, his contributions albeit sporadic, must have left an impact for the team since no one was against the idea of him being a permanent member.
That idea will soon become a reality for he’s slated to be an official member come February or March this year.
Coach
Although they have members aplenty be it at this moment and in the future, one thing seems missing in the Al Wehdah FC’s soccer equation - the coach.
They’re a team with no coach but they do have three passionate volunteers - Syed Mohamed Alsree, Hussain Harharah and of course Syed Mohamed Alkaff himself, all of whom manages the administrative side of the team – both on and off the pitch.
“We don’t have an official coach. But we do have a contact person. Who oversees the team stuff and all.”, Adel Alkaff explained.
He also added, “Just senior players and stuff. But sometimes, we have Malek Awab coming down to support and all.”
Malek Awab
Malek Awab is a former Midfielder for Singapore’s National team from the 1980s to 1990s. He also played for Tampines Rovers, Home United and Woodlands Wellington consecutively - all of which are S. League teams.

His stint as a professional Midfielder came to an end in 1999 as to which he proceeded to work at a sports equipment company called Pacific Sports Pte Ltd. whereby he headed all of the football equipment distribution department. He has been working there even till today.

His name may ring a tune of familiarity to some, for he, just like Fandi Ahmad, is one of the familiar figures when Singapore’s football scene is in question.

He is, after all, not only a Midfielder but a Vice Captain of the National Team who managed to win the Malaysia Cup not one or two, but four times.
He is also the man behind the record for the most number of international caps for Singapore.
Hence, when Malek Awab comes to observe Al Wehdah FC, he doesn’t just view them like an astronaut fanatic does during a stargazing session. With his vast amount of experience and knowledge about all things football, he imparts pearls of wisdom that no matter the quantity, is equivalent to being coached for Al Wehdah FC.
What to Expect Next
Al Wehdah FC is slated to have their first match for the Noah Leagues Cup on the 29th of January, 2019 at Tampines Hub.
They will be going against a team that goes by the name of Ezu Pelaajat FC.
This tournament is free and will occur from 9pm onwards.
If you are feeling financially constrained or have some time to spare, go ahead and witness this tournament for it’ll certainly yank you off from the throes of boredom, all without the need to spend a single penny.

Description: “NCIS History-Special Agent Vietnam is a comprehensive account of naval counterintelligence and criminal investigations in Vietnam. Doug Hubbard's first-hand experience provides unique insights into this little explored topic of the war, and the addition of a broad spectrum of his photos complements the narrative with a real life appeal. In an era when the term "terrorism" was not yet in vogue, NIS' investigations of insurgent attacks against US troops is a grim reminder of current threats our military faces in Afghanistan and around the globe on a daily basis.” Michael Sulick, Former Director, CIA National Clandestine Service “Although the Viet Nam War gives up its secrets grudgingly, former special agent Douglass Hubbard unveils an intriguing account of U.S. Naval Intelligence operations in the Republic of Vietnam. Drawing on his three years’ service in Vietnam and his subsequent research and interviews, Hubbard weaves a masterful story with 'NCIS History Special Agent Vietnam' that is equally inspiring and frustrating-just as the war itself proved to be.” Colonel Joseph H. Alexander, USMC. (Ret.) author of the Battle History of the U.S. Marines “Doug Hubbard Jr. explores the seamy underside of the Vietnam War from his ‘catbird seat’ as a special agent of the Naval Investigative Service. At the most there were never more than twenty-one of these Naval Intelligence officers serving in-country, and they had to deal with an overload of such unsavory matters as counter espionage, sabotage, black marketing, currency manipulation, simple theft, drug trafficking, subversion, rape, and murder. Sometimes these investigations came to a brilliant resolution that Sherlock Holmes would have applauded. More often they foundered because of command apathy or indifference.” Brigadier General Edwin H. Simmons, USMC, Chief of Staff of the First Marine Division in 1970, former head of the Marine Corps History Branch, and author of Frozen Chosin: US Marines at the Changjin Reservoir “Doug Hubbard’s exposition with NCIS History Special Agent Vietnam defines a period of counterintelligence development in the Vietnam conflict and records its events for the first time. Compiled personal recollections of wartime special agents make this historical narrative a defining work in the legacy left by the group of Naval Intelligence professionals who devised rules for counterintelligence and force protection in the challenging and dangerous arena of Vietnam in the 1960s. Theirs was a monumental contribution to the U.S. government’s efforts to achieve stability in the Republic of Vietnam, particularly in the early days of the mission when much was accomplished by a select few.” Maynard C. Anderson, former Assistant Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Security Policy
Review - It was a decent book with a lot of historical information on the Vietnam War and NIS's members. The main problem with the book was how light it was on actual cases vs pages and pages of commentary of who was assigned when and where. Another major issue were the multiple misspellings (Viet Congo is a common one) and repeated paragraphs. It's not unreadable, but it had issues. But for the historical information, and a few insights into deserters, fraggings, and a few interesting cases, it's worth a read.
