❖ Piltover Winters (Jayce/Viktor Headcanons)

A/N: I realize I always come back to writing around xmas. Erm, anyway. Have you guys seen Savior Viktor??? Delicious. *I don’t actually know if it snows in PnZ but it’s December so let’s live a little.

❖ Viktor

If you're cold, chances are he's freezing too because of how cold he usually runs.

Will forget his scarf. Sometimes, in his work-induced haze, he also forgets that he's not dressed for the weather and walks out of the lab only to get blasted in the face by the sheer COLD, grumbling and sniffling as he retreats back inside. Hence, he appreciates the heater and the fireplace in his academy-funded apartment very much.

While he might not be the biggest fan of the winter chill, he’s amazed by snow since it never reaches the part of the Undercity where he grew up.

Give Viktor a cup of hot chocolate, and his eyes will light up. He won’t admit it, and very few know about it, but much like his love for sweetmilk, he is very much a fan of hot chocolate. However, he doesn’t opt for it too often because its sweetness will irritate his throat, so he takes it every once in a while. He’ll be in a good mood the whole day if he does get a cup, something that Jayce capitalizes on if only to see him smile.

This man can not get up in the mornings, preferring to burrow deeper into the blankets or closer to a heat source where it's warm and toasty. You’ll have to drag him out or coax him out with a cup of hot beverage.

His body does him no favors in this department. The ever-bearing cold makes his joints ache worse, so it’s safe to say that his leg does not like him very much.

Once he gets the back brace, the screws permanently etched onto his spine will hurt, especially in the deep of winter. He’s gotten used to it to a degree, but sometimes it renders him somewhat immobile. It is also hard to navigate through snow with a crutch. This is why you’ll almost never find him outside during the winter months, though that hasn’t changed much from the past. Even if he has to go outside for some godforsaken reason, he’ll make them short and snappy trips at best, or send Jayce, who would be more than happy to do so, in his place.

❖ Jayce

Snow is not his forte, considering how he nearly died in a blizzard as a child. But, it has grown on him slowly over time. Though, you won’t find him outside when the snowfall turns heavy.

He may not show it, but he loves the seasonal festivities. He fondly remembers hitting the attractions and festivals with Caitlyn back when they were both younger, and would sometimes do the same again, if only for the nostalgic factor.

The man of progress might be busy, but Jayce the present-giver works doubly hard. You may barely see him out of his lab, but he’ll make the time, sometimes out of thin air, to get everyone presents.

Coat? What is a coat? This guy’s a furnace, he’s fine (not really) but he will claim he’s fine if you ask. Will happily let anyone he's close to cling to him for his warmth, or laugh and give them his scarf so now they're like a two-scarf coat rack. Paints a rather funny picture to be bundled up in an abundance of scarves.

Probably has to participate in a lot of winter social events due to the council. Dutiful as he is, Jayce will attend those societal gatherings, but you bet he'd whine the next person's ear off by the time he's dragged to his mandatory 3rd dinner/gala or something similar along those lines. Sometimes, if he gets bored, he sneaks back to the lab when no one's noticing… until Heimerdinger pops up when he least expects it. “There's a time and place for innovation, my boy! But tonight's a night for the outdoors, don't you think?”

Will oftentimes be the first one up in the mornings because he knows he has a packed schedule and he'd better get up or else. When he doesn't get up due to it being a lazier day, he'll hog ALL the blankets, curling into a ball and going back for another snooze, much to your chagrin.

Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?

I’ve seen a lot of posts recently which rightly cry for help in working out the timeline these days.  Ever since June of last year, starting with chapter 443 (Haircuts), it’s been really hard to determine where the newest chapters fit in any timeline.  Even my analysis may not be correct, so if you have other ideas, please share!  I took a close look and came up with these:

Four Distinct Timelines:

Third year of middle school, boys are 15 (chapters 51-445, except special chapters)

Zhan Zheng Xi’s first year of university when Jian Yi returns – guys are 18-19 (chapters 1-50)

Christmas and Chinese New Year of He Tian’s return, ZZX is finishing uni, guys are 21-22 (Xmas special chapters, chapters 452 to present, chapter 462 and possibly 415 and 438; (in China, New Year activities last 2 weeks))

Post-age 22, guys are settled in their relationships (chapters 446-451, various Special Chapters, and much single-panel art).

The Breakdown:

Chapters 1-50 are a series of short, unconnected comics and single panels that are set during and after JY’s return.  ZZX notes that JY disappeared the second day of high school.  JY says he was kidnapped and taken to a remote island, but ZZX doubts this.  ZZX is at university, and JY is repeating an unnamed year at high school.  One scene shows them leaving a public drinking date, so they’re over 18, but it seems to be early in ZZX’s uni days, so they’re probably 18 or 19. 

Chapter 51 begins a long flashback to the 3rd year of middle school, when the guys are about 15.   Chapter 445, Mo Guan Shan’s shut down of She Li posted July 1, 2024, is the last chapter from the school years so far. 

Not yet shown is exactly when HT leaves, but it’s assumed from other context to occur before high school, roughly when JY also disappears.

Between chapters 51 and the current chapter are many special chapters that depart from the school timeline.  They’re often written for Chinese holidays and stand alone.  One exception is the series of Christmas chapters written between 2017 and 2023.  These are set on a single Christmas day and the immediate days following and show HT’s return from his long absence overseas.  Three consecutive New Year’s chapters may show different days from the same New Year that follow the end of the Christmas chapters. 

The Christmas chapters, followed by Chapter 452, begin a new timeline.  HT is recently back from overseas and is earning his own money with a new unnamed business.  MGS works on cars as a new apprentice at a luxury car modification shop (though he was taking out trash from somewhere else in the first Christmas chapter; maybe that was his last day?)  ZZX seems to be in the final months of university and interviews for an entry position at a firm.  He’s living at home.  JY’s life is not yet described, but he not earning money to rent a place, so he may be a student as well.  The guys are probably around 21 or 22.

Chapters 446-451 have no obvious timeline clues.  Based only on MGS boldly wearing an assortment of earrings and a common orange cap, I’m guessing they’re probably set in the future beyond the latest chapter 452 timeline when their relationships are more settled.

I haven’t dared consider the single-panel art, mostly set in the more distant future (my “settled relationships” timeline).  In these, we can see that HT and MGS have developed a highly sexual relationship, and JY and ZZX are more romantic than demonstrative.

Finlay: First is Golda from the town of Eldolas. His contributions in building our relationship with the Eastern Nobles Alliance were significant.

Finlay: And Lonestar from Rosetown. This year too he’s earned an enormous amount of money for the Grovaner family.

Finlay: I’d like to grant the reward to these two, but… I’d also like to hear the opinions of the committee.

Nobles: I see… As expected, this year it’s these two families.

Nobles: I agree with your selection, Finlay-sama.

Finlay: Hm… Are there any objections?

Finlay: Then in one month, we shall summon them and grant them the reward.

Finlay: …Now then. There’s an issue with one other candidate.

Finlay: They were also rejected at last year’s meeting, but… We must take them into consideration again.

Nobles: For residents of the Central Lands, the reward granted by the Grovaner family is… It’s a very prestigious award. 

Nobles: To bestow it onto the Devil Butlers is unprecedented.

Finlay: I am aware. I also understand that there are many nobles who have unfavorable views of the Devil Butlers.

Finlay: However… As the head of the Grovaner family, it is my responsibility to be impartial.

Finlay: In the event that objective evidence has been presented… Regardless of the precedent, I will have no choice but to grant them the reward.

Finlay: I’d like for everyone here to understand that.

Nobles: Yes… …However…

Finlay: Well… I’m only speaking of a hypothetical where “objective evidence has been presented.”

Finlay: That is to say… If there’s no objective evidence, then there’s no reason to grant them the reward.

Finlay: …Record this too in the records of this proceeding. The opposing nobles should be satisfied with this.

Nobles: …! Yes…It will be done, Finlay-sama.

Favorite color: it really depends on context honestly. But the most general is soft pink.

Last book: 😅 I've been struggling through Nein Eyes of Lucien for a while.... more honestly its Call of the Netherdeep and Explorers Guide to Wildemount. I truely read far more fanfic than anything else.

Last movie: I watched Night at the Museum for the first time this week. It was waaaaaay better than I ever imagined. I knew it was good and funny. It was also incredibly sincere and I can't get enough of that.

Last show: speaking of sincere, I'm about halfway through Frieren: beyond journey's end. And holy shit! I have never seen any media with a character who views and interacts with death the way i do. Its pretty heavy as shows go but its trustworthy. (I have a hard time with new stuff most of the time. Cr is one exception and this is too apparently)

Sweet/spicy/savory: no joke I've eaten salt before lol. But i prefer combos or all 3. Sweet spicy is underrated.

Relationship status: I live with my queer platonic partner. Its still just buckwild to me. As a kid i hated the idea of living with a partner cuz i didnt want so many aspects of what i was told that looked like. But hey guess what, y'all can decide what your relationships look like. We have separate rooms, are not sexually involved, rarely even touch tbh. And we love each other very much and want to grow old together in a house with cats.

They're touch averse and I'm sensory seeking. My fun Sunday night (out dancing) is their nightmare. But because we are who we are and how we understand and communicate in our relationship we rely on each other for only things that are available. I'll tell them all the dumb shit i see and do on Grindr and we'll sit on the couch and knit together.

Also my brain nearly explodes everytime I realize not only do we do couple stuff, we have couple friends we do couple stuff with. 18 year old me would have never believed you if you told them.

Last thing I looked up: I looked up the caffeine content of the thai tea concentrate I got my partner to see if i could try it. And shockingly i should be able to. Still gonna eat first and be careful though.

Current obsession: I'm pretty spread out rn, unusually. Ive got a sweater im excited about. And I'm on my 3rd attempt at a dorym water bottle sleeve I'm designing. This one should work now. Honestly dorym is probably no. 1 on my list. I shipped that back in exu, along with a bunch of stuff cuz I'm a delightful multishipper. So i feel particularly excited about dorym finally taking off. But also that while dorian was always looking to orym if anything else had come along he was there for the ride. I love robbie so so much. He is such a good character storyteller!

Looking forward to: today im hanging with 2 friends im usually in a larger group with so thats gonna be fun. Looking forward to baking off the beef wellingtons i made for my partner for xmas. And im looking forward to being able to work full time again in the new year. Ive been on part time for health reasons and stayed because i was spending hours on the phone fighting for insurance coverage. Now that both a done i can work more. I love my job and its a particular kind of boredom that i get when i cant work. Lol speaking of, im looking forward to the holidays being over. The office closures normally screw us but now im only working thurs fri for the next 2 weeks and I'll have try really hard to keep busy enough. At least my partner has 2 of the days off with me!

one way i've been helping myself focus on thesis writing is completely cutting myself off from the rest of the internet/social media during my writing/work hours. unfortunately i regret to inform you that this is extremely effective. boooo. but also, unplugging does wonders for the mind sometimes. but anyways, that's why i've been such a ghost lately. but no longer!

i get so anxious about vacation because i feel like I forget things and lose my flow very quickly in all aspects of life, so before i take a break, i have to thoroughly take notes and essentially create a hard save point so i don't constantly feel like i've left the oven on while i'm on vacation mode. it takes a lot of effort for me to relax lol. but the game is saved, it's time for me to chill for the next 5ish days and be a person again.

the research update, for those who care:

unfortunately i am still in limbo waiting for this last batch of tensile testing (pully aparty how strong is the metal) samples to come in, and either that will happen before I take my 2 weeks off in xmas, and thus my 1 week prior to that will be absolute crunch of heat treating and then pully aparty-ing the samples. or they'll come in too late, and all of my processing and testing is pushed into jan. but it's not the end of the world since I would be defending in jan/feb even if they came in early. but the sooner I have my defense date in sight, the sooner i look for jobs and get to make plans about what the next part of my life looks like.

while i wait for my metal, i've been working on everything else i possibly can, so when i do eventually get those results I can just smush them in and pull the trigger. and that is actually going quite well! thesis is about 50% fully or near-fully complete by volume, and about 80% complete in spirit. paper 1 done and 3rd round revisions, paper 2 in rough draft phase (which is importantly more than the outline phase!!!) there will be lots of revisions, but words are making it onto the doc. :)

my ex's birthday today and I just know he's expecting a text from me even tho this is the 3rd year since we broke up... the first birthday after we broke up I didn't text him so he sent me a verrrrry butthurt text accusing me of forgetting his bday and im like I didn't forget I just chose not to say anything bc I am not fucking obligated.... last year I texted him happy bday just to head off that situation again but this year I'm at a loss. This guy continues to text me on my bday Thanksgiving and Xmas every year and im like we are broken up. That news is years old at this point. There is no one else in my life that I text on their birthday Thanksgiving and Christmas like be fucking real. It's just the entitlement to me. Like no one is entitled to birthday texts from their ex from 3 years ago. The longer he holds on the weirder it makes me feel. I have him muted so I don't get notifications for it but I see his name in my recent threads im like oh hell no.
