Walking through virtual space. Soonho showing a virtual model of a neighbourhood generated through 3D point cloud. Photogrammetry was used to convert photographs into point cloud data. Mind blowing! Taking contextual analysis to another level! I have been amazed and really fascinated by the wide range of technologies that we have been using in the studio this semester. For me, technology as a design tool has always been either advance 3D modelling software, photo/ image/ vector modulation tools or 3D printing/ fabrication tools. In this studio, we have been using a completely different spectrum of tools for 3D visualization. The process of site analysis has been very interesting – scan the site for real time data cloud points through LEICA/ FARO scanners or through photogrammetry, feed them in the software (Autodesk recap/ remake, Unity or blender) to create virtual 3D environment, import 3D models of the design/massing study (rhino, sketch-up,3Dmax) in the virtual environment and capture views. It has propelled the entire experience of site analysis to a different level. It’s a big jump from site models/ massing block models and 3D renders to real time capturing of the site and using that as a shell. Eventually, this will be used to create virtual environments with the final design of the project and a VR interface will allow the community to experience the project in real time. This I believe will help in bridging the gap between an architect’s way of communicating and a client’s way of understanding designs. Architect’s vocabulary ranges from abstract drawings and diagrams to axonometric views to conceptual models to realistic renders. In the past 3 years working in offices, I have seen many instances when a client is confused and pondering whether that is an exact replica or a conceptual/abstract one – if it’s an exact - he doesn’t like it and he doesn’t like it; if it’s a conceptual one - he is expecting more, he wants to see what material is going on the facade!
