tactiquest structure
Edit: Play tactiquest here!
so i've posted a lot about tactiquest's classes and monsters and everything on here but i haven't really talked about the non-combat subsystems much yet and i wanted to go into detail about them, bc tactiquest has very different goals from most heroic fantasy systems.
tracking inventory, travel time, worrying about actually running out of your adventuring budget, are things a lot of big-damn-heroes fantasy systems throw out because they're just paperwork that gets in the way of your cool fights. that's not the case in Tactiquest! these systems are so core to the experience that removing them will make a lot of classes unusable. the game is built around them.
travel & exploration
tactiquest explicitly assumes you're running an open-sandbox hexcrawl and is designed to support that, including the fact the game is designed around random encounters. this is the sort of thing D&D 3e expected you to do, but people ditched random encounters because they thought they were boring and tedious. so classes balanced around that attrition of resources ended up with a huge spike in power other classes couldn't match.
the boring-and-tedious problem is mostly addressed by trying to make combat really good and resolve really fast. if i fucked that up the whole thing falls apart, but so far people are liking it
the second thing that helps with random encounters is your resources don't fully restore immediately at the end of each day like they do in 3e. resting is less effective in the wilderness and resources expended are a tomorrow problem, not just a today problem. so you don't have to have 3+ fights every single day just to maintain parity - 0-2 fights per day still adds up to difficult resource management.
because the game has such a focus on it, you can have classes like the ranger actually be good at travel and exploration instead of just giving them vaguely-naturey combat abilities.
economy
in most D&D-likes, even usually OSR ones, you accrue so much gold. just as a side effect of adventuring. to the point money no longer actually matters because you can throw piles of it at any problem. this is bad. it's a system that defeats its own purpose; there are no interesting choices involving money when you have so much the only real expense is like, 50,000-gold-piece magic items.
i don't just want players to care about money, i want them to worry about money, like a normal person. you're not batman who's a billionaire as a side hobby, you're spiderman who has to deliver pizzas in between superhero work because he's got bills to pay like everyone else. so a whole lot of effort has been put into actually designing prices and treasure amounts around this dynamic.
i also hate how games will usually go "oh adventuring gives you 900,000 gold for existing but a normal person's living wage is 2 gold a month". i don't want to be fantasy jeff bezos, thanks
inventory
this is something i just lifted from OSR games outright. you can carry ten things (and tiny things don't take up an item slot). that's the whole rule.
tracking inventory can add a lot of interesting decisions to a game and adds a new lever for abilities from classes and magic items. having a character play the merchant class which gets a bunch of extra inventory slots feels really impactful. finding a bag of holding that doubles your carry capacity feels so good when you actually have to watch your inventory.
supply
the only thing i felt was really unenjoyable when running games with strict inventory limits was tracking rations for each character that you eat every night; it felt too much like busywork with not enough payoff. so in Tactiquest rations are abstracted into a single Supply stat that's tied to the party rather than any individual character.
you can only restock Supply in towns, and it drops by 1 each time you rest. you can sleep without resting and this won't cost supply, but you won't regain any HP or other resources. this gives you the impactful decision-making of tracking rations without the annoyance of "okay it's been a day of travel, everyone make sure you dock a ration from your sheet" like twice per session
Supply is one of the things that slowly drains your funds and gives you a reason to keep seeking out treasure, tying back into the economy. it also gives merchants and rangers some extra mechanical levers for their class abilities to pull on.

D&D 5e being poorly designed issue #499:
Flesh to Stone requires three failed constitution saves to actually petrify anything, and even then requires ten rounds of concentration to make it last longer than a minute. Constitution is the most common save to have a bonus in in this system, and since it is a sixth level spell, this bonus tends to be quite high. As a result, this spell pretty much never actually does what it is billed as doing.
If the target does make their saves, this effectively translates into 3-5 rounds of a single target being restrained, at the cost of a sixth level spell slot and concentration.
The web spell, meanwhile, creates an area of effect in which any creatures that fail their dexterity saves are restrained. Dexterity saves are pretty common, but they have to keep making them as long as they're in the webs, and it's a strength check (rather than a save, so usually a lower bonus!) to escape. The spell requires concentration, but the maximum duration is an hour.
That's right. Web is objectively and unambiguously better than Flesh to Stone, despite being four spell levels lower. This is because the people making 5e wanted to get rid of save-or-suck effects, but didn't want to get rid of the spell names, and so nerfed them all to the point of uselessness. There is no use case for Flesh to Stone that would not be better served by Web or some other, notably lower than sixth level spell. You could cast Web with that sixth level slot, and it'd be a waste of resources, but it would still be less of a waste than Flesh to Stone, because it lasts longer, is slightly harder to resist, and can affect more than just one creature.
This is your game design on nostalgia and self-reference.
Yeah there's a lot of weird and conflicting ideas going on with spells in D&D 5e because they really lacked a coherent set of design goals: the designers seemed to have lacked a clear consensus on whether they wanted the game to be a balanced (albeit tipped in the player characters' favor) tactical combat game like 4e or an old-school experience with lots of nasty save or die effects. Part of the issue is that at an early point in the design process they decided not to take 4e's lead on monsters effectively having their own unique spells and spell-like abilities, and instead decided that the same spell lists should be available to both monsters and player characters.
And as anyone who's played 3e will tell you, when spells are as readily available and effortless to use as in Hasbro D&D and both sides have save or death spells available, it leads to rocket tag. And rocket tag is really not conducive to a fun tactical combat game that is supposed to be slightly tipped in the player characters' favor.
(Rocket tag is also the name of the game at higher levels in TSR editions of D&D and I feel it does harmonize better with the sheer amount of "fuck you" design in those editions. I think the assumptions written into the rules that combat isn't supposed to be fair or fun affects that very much.)
Anyway, so it's not just pure nostalgia, it's a combination of nostalgia while at the same time trying to copy D&D 4e's homework but not understanding the assignment. The biggest issue with D&D 5e in the context of all the various editions of D&D is that it had the benefit of more than thirty years of design and still ended up without a clear set of design goals besides "let's make the game that's the most D&D!" Like, ultimately as a dungeon game it's fine, but given the context of what's come before it should've been great.

How is 3e different from 5e dnd?
So there's a lot that sets it apart, despite a similar core mechanical framework. I'll try and hit some high notes though. TLDR same basic engine but with a lot more depth. I will probably still ramble a lot so, uh, time for readmore...
First off, there's a lot more numbers. Instead of the advantage disadvantage system, a lot more things have a direct numerical effect on your rolls. Flanking an enemy for example, gives you a +2 bonus to your attack roll. Being surprised doesn't give enemy advantage, instead you lose your dexterity bonus to your AC cause, well, you aren't dodging.
Second off, just about everything has a bit more depth to it. For example, in 5e weapons have a damage die and maybe a couple tags. In 3.5, there's first off a lot more weapons and use some different dice combos. As an example, falchions and scythes do 2d4 damage. The versatile tag was actually a simplification of the fact that any weapon can be wielded in two hands (well, except light weapons). Wielding a weapon in one hand adds strength to damage, but two handing it boosts your strength bonus to damage by 50%. Oh, and you know all weapons in 5e crit on a 20 for an extra die on damage? Well, default crit in 3.5 is a 20 for double damage, but some weapons have more threat range. A light mace, a shortsword, and a rapier all do d6 damage but the mace crits on a 20, the shortsword on a 19, and the rapier on an 18. That and some weapons do more on a crit. A heavy pick is d6 damage and crits on a 20, but does four times as much damage on a crit. I have gone on this long just about different weapons with different pros and cons. My players all spent significant time thinking about their primary weapons.
Oh yeah, you know how feats kinda sucked in 5e? In 3.5, they are practically character defining. Good news is you get them more often! Every character starts with a feat for free, humans get a second one, and then every three levels you get another one! These are in addition to stat boosts every four levels. Now, some things that were feats in 5e are free in 3.5 (like being able to charge), and some that are feats in 3.5 are free in 5e (like being able to use dexterity to hit with light weapons), bit of a give and take there. But yeah, do it right and you can be pretty insane!
Oh yeah, skills work way different! Instead of picking a handful at character generation to be Proficient in, you get a certain number of Skill Points each level based on your class and intelligence, and you can distribute those between your skills as you please (capped at 4 ranks at level 1, goes up by one each level). Your class has a list of Class Skills you can buy at the normal rate, but you can still buy non class skills, they just cost double and have half the cap. What this means is a fighter might not be as good as the rogue at sneaking but he can still be good at if he wants. This also means you can choose to get a smaller bonus to your rolls in exchange for taking more skills by spreading your points around!
Oh yeah, did it ever strike you that everyone was as good with their weapons as the Fighter, the Designated Hitting Stuff Guy? Well, in 3.5, instead of everyone getting the same proficiency bonus, each class has their Base Attack Bonus. Fighters and other classes with Full BAB go up a point every level, things like Rogues and Clerics go up at a rate that comes out to about 3/4 levels (so at level 20 they get +15), and folks like Wizards get Slow BAB where they go up every other level. So yeah, the fighter will actually be better at hitting things.
God I could go on but even on my bigass monitor I can’t see the top of my post so I should probably ease up. God, and I haven’t even gotten to prestige classes... Uh, those are basically a fancy way of multiclassing that have certain requirements before you start taking them in exchange for being more specialized than regular classes. A lot of 5e subclasses were based off prestige classes from 3.5, so you can probably still play your favorite stuff. There’s also a lot more base classes! Swashbuckler is its own class as an example, instead of being a subset of rogue, it’s an absolutely devastating finesse DPS.
Oh, and monster variety! There are so few monsters in 5e compared to 3.5! I have six different books full of monsters open when I’m planning encounters! Seriously, so much more to work with!

Top five incredibly niche spells?
Ah, ze niche spells. How I love zhem!
#5. Amanuensis (3.5)/Scrivener's Chant (PF)
Copy + Paste (non-magical text only) as a cantrip.
Amanuensis creates an exact duplicate of whatever text you're wanting at 250 words/minute (lasts 10 minutes per caster level). Will trigger written magical traps in the source material.
Scrivener's chant animates a quill, which then copies an existing text in your own handwriting (though you can use a Linguistics check to make a forgery, as normal) at the rate of "one normal page" (unspecified size or number of words) per minute (requires concentration, lasts up to 1 min./caster level).
Since both are obscure and PF is supposed to be 100% backwards compatible with 3.5 (being 3.P/3.75; we at wearesorcerer ignore the existence of the stupidity that is 2e), take amanuensis. The downside is something you would and should have prevented (by checking the text) before casting the spell anyway and in all other ways it's superior.
#4: Mordenkainen's Faithful Hound
It's supposed to be a damaging version of alarm; this almost makes it a Stand.
Seriously, why would you spend that high a level of spell slot on alarm? Presumably because you can't be assed to cast some other trap spell. Or you like doggos. Or you're playing in Eberron in 3.5 and have someone with the Mark of Whatever (I forget if it's the Halfling Mark of Hospitality, the Dwarf Mark of Warding, or something else).
#3: Nystul's Magic Aura and Phantom Trap
The third edition version of Nystul's magic aura only works on items, but doesn't have any restriction on whether or not they're carried, while the 5e version is infinitely more useful (as it applies to creatures) but raises questions about the aurae of carried items (which could, in certain contexts, render the spell pointless). Phantom trap works similarly, but the illusion is that a lock is trapped, rather than magical/non-magical. They're kinda useful, but in overly specific situations such that I have struggled to get them in use. Thus, I find them funny: they should be useful, but aren't.
There are a gazillion of these - fire trap ("I'll enchant my spellbook [because that's important] to cast fireball on anyone who opens it! Note to self: enchant/make a fireproof spellbook."), explosive runes/sepia snake sigil/any of the other spell traps that require you to read them (contrast with glyph of warding and the various symbol spells, which are proximity-based and frequently of lower levels compared to the read effect in question). I get why they exist, to some extent, but I see them mainly as wastes of pages because their utility is so minimal that they're mainly useful once in an entire campaign. (Nystul's magic aura might be marginally more useful, especially in the 5e version, depending on how personal vs. item aurae work.) Thus, they occupy this spot for sheer hilarity.
#2: Leomund's Secret Chest
Gods, I love this spell. The 5e version got rid of a lot of the unnecessary baggage (pun definitely intended) with the 3.5 version of the spell, like only being able to have one set of chests period. Honestly, I don't think it should require having a masterwork chest and a miniature version of it; you're just creating a temporary storage space (albeit on the Ethereal Plane because we have to explain such things needlessly) and can retrieve items from it at will. Instead, it should just let you create pocket dimensions (as many as you want; one per casting), with the option of making them permanent (via permanency). Identical functionality without strange GP/crafting requirements. (Perhaps make that a higher level version to justify the cost reduction, I dunno.)
In 3.5 (and maybe pre-3e?), you need this spell to craft bags of holding, which I find tedious: yeah, I get that the explanation for the bag of holding is that it's an extradimensional space, but really, making something bigger on the inside shouldn't have to be the same magic as creating a pocket dimension (mini-demi-plane); it could be a lower-level spell, especially for the utility a bag of holding gives you versus that of the secret chest spell.
#1: Zone of Truth
This one was kinda hard because there are so many niche spells, but in the end I have the best memories with this one (because of someone else's character still trying to lie while inside one), so it goes here. Zone of truth is niche because while discerning lies is still fairly important in D&D (being so basic to social interaction), it's not like you're going to have much of a reason to cast it apart from interrogating prisoners (which isn't exactly a common thing). And it's an AoE instead of something you apply to an individual, meaning you can't lie, either. It's ripe for shenanigans!
PC: "Who are you working for?" Captive: "I'm not working for anyone. Eat my dick!" PC: "I do enjoy the taste of dick-- HEY!"
Like, forcing people to speak "the truth" could just remove any inhibitions they have in their speech at all:
