Experiential Music Hackathon Recap
On February 22nd, we explored music beyond the auditory at the Experiential Music Hackathon. It was a fantastic day of talks, workshops, hacking and performances held at the Brooklyn Navy Yard offices of Weav Music.
Talks
Jay Alan Zimmerman, a composer, author, and multimedia artist, came up with the original concept for this event and led the organizing. As a composer who has become deaf, and co-creator of projects like Google’s Seeing Music, his opening talk set the stage for a day that aimed to make music more inclusive by enhancing the experience for everyone.
Kon Tsitsas, Adaptive Music Specialist at Weav Music, described their process for designing adaptive, interactive music experiences like Weav Run.
Allen Riley presented works like Electronic Internet, sonification of internet browsing, and the Dream Car, a sound and light environment inspired by La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela's Dream House.
He also brought Videofreak, a music and video synthesizer in the form of an arcade cabinet, from its home at the Death By Audio Arcade. Participants explored the “experiential game” throughout the day.
Johann Diedrick (aquiet.life) described how attuning our hearing to environmental sounds can inspire new ways of music making. From a workshop building aeolian harps to be played by the wind, to projects like the bird classifier at Newtown Creek, mobile listening kit and harvester.
Yago de Quay (meetgraviton.com) described how technologies such as gesture and brain wave sensors can turn the body and mind into an instrument in a live performance context. He shared context behind some of his projects like Lightning Guitar, Brainwave Controlled Music Show, and Interactive Music and Dance.
Rena Anakwe’s talk, “Building Worlds through Sound, Visuals and Scent,” described how all of the senses factor into her immersive performances. Emphasizing the healing power of music, she concluded the talks with a sound-scent bath that was a perfect finale as we transitioned into hacking and workshops.
Workshops
In the first workshop, Jay Alan Zimmerman and David Lu described techniques for visualizing music.
Then, they delved into some of the technical approaches to music visualization that powered their work for Google’s “Seeing Music.”
Kyle Luntz led the second workshop, connecting live audio with environmental sensors.
Participants used open source software and hardware (Pure Data and Arduino).
Kyle is an artist and musician, as well as educator at Beam Center, a Brooklyn-based non-profit who generously lent extra Arduinos for the workshop.
Hacking
With all of the workshops there was still some time for hacking, pizza, and meeting new people.
We hit capacity at the beginning of the day, and our amazing volunteer organizers like Steph, Alan and Vinay helped us handle the overwhelming interest in the event without breaking the fire code.
Demos & Performances
At the end of the day, participants shared what they worked on, interspersed with special guest performances from Viola Yip, Richard Einhorn/Ruth Cunningham, Jay Alan Zimmerman and David Lu. Jay Alan Zimmerman’s performance incorporated sign language and included everyone in the audience. He then provided visuals for a Richard Einhorn composition w/ the performer Ruth Cunningham.
Throughout the performances, visuals projected and reflected throughout the physical space.
Viola Yip performed with Bulbble, a DIY instrument that incorporates a circuit of lightbulbs as an interface for the audio and visual interplay for a performance
A demo of “Tongues,” by Alex Suber, Nathan Miller, Armand Bernardi: an augmented sound experience that classifies the mood and sentiment of speech based on its timbre, and uses this to generate music.
Alex Wang, Dan Cho, and Adam Rahman worked on “Windown”: a sleep aid application intended to be incorporated into a nighttime routine.
Halley and CJ demoed the sound of tattooing an orange.
Concluding the performances, David Lu aka Condrummer, demonstrated his unique audio-visual compositions
We livestreamed the talks and demos/performances and you can view them on youtube. Unfortunately the video framerate is low, but the audio quality is high!
Photos by Inza Bamba, Brenden Hussey, Vinay Raghavan, Allen Riley and Jason Sigal.
Thank you!
Many thanks to all who participated in the event and to everyone involved in making it happen! Thank you to everyone at Weav Music for hosting us, transforming their office to accommodate the event, and putting such care and thought into the planning. Thank you to Spotify for supporting pizza and live captioning. Thanks Stan(ographer) for captioning. Thank you Shagari Guity for graphics. Thanks to all of our incredible guests (Jay, Kon, Johann, Yago, Rena, David, Kyle, and Viola) for sharing their work. And thank you to the many volunteers (Alan, Brenden, Holly, Inza, Jason, Jay, Marium, Shagari, Steph, Taylor and Vinay) who organized on behalf of Music Community Lab!
Please reach out to contact” at ” musiccommunitylab.org if you’d like to get involved with future events!

Environmental Health Safety Market To Touch Us$ 8,315.1.0 Mn By 2024
Environmental health & safety tools are primarily used by companies to adhere with the environmental regulations and norms concerned with occupational and environmental health & safety. Over the past four decades, a large number of EHS regulations has been implemented across major industrialized economies such as North America and Europe. After the global financial crisis in 2008, implementation of robust and costly EHS monitoring tools has been affected greatly. Yet there has been a significant imposition of regulations that has collectively increased the spending on improved information management systems. The global EHS market is expected to expand at a CAGR of 12.0% from 2016 to 2024, reaching US$ 8,315.1.0 Mn by 2024.
The implementation of EHS tools has been witnessing prominent growth owing to a rise in corporate investment across EHS software platforms. Furthermore, multiple statutory and legal requirements to maintain EHS safety standards have surged the deployment of EHS across major industry verticals such as chemicals and petrochemicals, construction, and energy and mining. Moreover, continued industrial growth in developing economies such as China, India, South Africa, and the UAE is encouraging EHS adoption. This has significantly affected the market for EHS to exhibit growth across developing nations. However, there are certain restraints harnessing the EHS market’s growth, such as potentially costly solutions and services to comply with EHS regulations and the expenditures incurred in auditing for complex sites.

The demand in the global environmental health and safety market is expected to increment at a strong CAGR during the forecast period of 2017 to 2025, owing to a number of factors such as government initiatives to protect the environment, incremented investment by end users, and reduced cost of environmental compliance software, which is leading to its adoption across small and medium businesses. On the other hand, there is still a vast population base that is unaware of the availability of the EHS software and are still depending on traditional methods. This factor is obstructing the market from attaining its true potential.
The competitive landscape of the global environmental health and safety market is highly dependent on product innovation, as there is strong need for products that can work efficiently and can be installed in different business setups of diverse companies. The EHS market is primarily used by industries pertaining to energy and mining, chemical and petrochemical, construction, manufacturing, telecom and IT, and healthcare. While a number of companies are also focused on strategic mergers and acquisitions in order to expand their geographical presence, satisfaction of the stakeholders, preservation of their brands, and development of solutions are also at the forefront for the key companies to maintain their strong hold.
Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Market: Overview
A variety of chemicals have become unavoidable in our everyday lives. From computers, to medicines, cosmetic creams to paints and coatings. The chemical industry is one of the world’s largest industries, with products manufactured in the range of billions of tonnes every year. The increasingly stringent health, safety, and environment laws, regulations, guidelines, and processes instigated in the past few years across leading chemical producing countries is the key factor driving the increased implementation of EHS tools across the industrial sector. Companies diligently adhering to environment- and resource-friendly manufacturing practices are increasingly investing in the deployment of effective EHS tools.
In developing economies such as India, China, South Africa, and the UAE, the thriving industrial sector is encouraging the increased adoption of EHS tools. However, certain factors, such as the high costs involved in auditing complex production sites and the highly expensive services and solutions required to comply with EHS regulations are expected to hinder the overall rate of adoption of EHS tools to a certain extent.
Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Market: Market Potential
China is one of the largest producers of a number of chemicals and has immense scope for the implementation of EHS tools across companies involved in the production of a number of high-risk chemicals. Recent incidences of leakage of hazardous chemicals (the series of explosions on the Port of Tianjin in August 2015), leading to the death of hundreds of people and serious injuries to many more, have highlighted the pressing need for effective management of chemical production and storage sites. Post this incidence, the government has been paying more attention to the strict implementation of EHS rules and regulations.

The industry and countries with established chemical industries therefore have a huge responsibility to ensure the safe usage and production of chemicals so that the associated activities do not pose harm to the human resources working in close proximity and the environment.
Environment health and safety (EHS) tools allow companies to keep track of and properly manage activities that related to the production or usage of chemicals, especially the ones that are known to pose harm to health of living organisms and the environment, such as mercury or CFCs. Companies operating in sectors such as power production, mining, and construction also frequently use EHS tools to ensure that production and operation sites to adhere to environmental norms and regulations concerning occupational and environmental health and safety.

Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Market: Trends and Opportunities
Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Market: Regional Overview
The EHS market holds immense promise of growth in Asia Pacific owing to the established chemical industry and burgeoning construction and energy and mining sectors. The rate of implementation, however, is presently low in the region owing to high costs and is expected to increase in the future years owing to initiation of stringent EHS regulations in countries such as India, China, and Japan.
The high costs of EHS tools largely restrict their overall adoption to developed economies across regions such as North America and Europe. North America presently accounts for the dominant share in the global implementation EHS software and services. The region is also expected to retain dominance owing to the stringent EHS regulations and policies and steady pace of development of the chemical and energy industries.
Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Market: Competitive Landscape
The market for EHS tools and services features a large number of companies, pointing towards a largely fragmented vendor landscape. The market features some of the world’s leading software development companies and several non-profit consulting organizations. Video: How the Court System Is Abused to Chill Activist Speech
One of the most pernicious forms of censorship in modern America is the abuse of the court system by corporations and wealthy individuals to harass, intimidate, and silence their critics.
We use the term “Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation,” more commonly known as a “SLAPP,” to describe this phenomenon. With a SLAPP, a malicious party will file a lawsuit against a person whose speech is clearly protected by the First Amendment. The strategy isn’t to win on the legal merits, but to censor their victims through burdensome, distracting, and costly litigation. SLAPP suits often make spurious defamation claims and demand outrageous monetary penalties to bully their enemies.
In EFF’s work, we’ve seen SLAPPs deployed against journalists and bloggers, cartoonists, and even people who have posted reviews on websites like Yelp and eBay. They’ve been used by election power players against their political opponents and by corporations against non-profits whose job is to hold them in check. In fact, EFF faced such a scheme when an Australian company filed a lawsuit to censor one of our “Stupid Patent of the Month” articles. Although EFF won in court, the lawsuit required resources that we otherwise could have devoted to other battles.
This tactic is currently being used by energy and logging corporations to target environmental groups. For example, paper-producer Resolute Forest Products sued Greenpeace, claiming they violated racketeering laws because the organization had called the company a “forest destroyer.” After a 17-month legal battle, Greenpeace emerged victorious in October when the case was dismissed in federal court. Greenpeace faces a similar suit from Energy Transfer Partners, a company best known for running the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline project.
%3Ciframe%20width%3D%22560%22%20height%3D%22315%22%20src%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube-nocookie.com%2Fembed%2FPlhVHiWM4yk%3Frel%3D0%26autoplay%3D1%22%20frameborder%3D%220%22%20gesture%3D%22media%22%20allow%3D%22encrypted-media%22%20allowfullscreen%3D%22%22%3E%3C%2Fiframe%3E

Greenpeace is now among the many voices raising awareness of the danger of SLAPP suits, and it is offering a toolkit for environmental activists. In a new video, UC Berkeley public policy professor Robert Reich explains what’s at stake: "If the goal is to silence public-interest groups, the rest of us must speak out. Wealthy corporations must know they can't SLAPP the public into silence."
Greenpeace and its environmental allies are joined by many First Amendment groups—including EFF, the First Amendment Coalition, Freedom of the Press Foundation, and the ACLU—in this campaign to educate the public on the need to fight back against SLAPP suits. Among the most important measures you can take is joining the Public Participation Project's efforts to pass anti-SLAPP legislation in Congress.
Anti-SLAPP laws are designed to allow defendants to quickly dismiss the frivolous claims brought against them based on a showing that they’re being targeted for engaging in protected First Amendment activity. The plaintiff bringing the suit then has to prove that they can actually substantiate their claims. If they can’t show that their legal claims have merit, a court must dismiss the suit. This allows defendants to avoid what can often be extremely costly and distracting civil discovery.
Further, most anti-SLAPP laws feature cost-shifting provisions, such that once a defendant successfully gets the claims against them dismissed, they can force the companies who sued them to pay their attorneys’ fees and other costs related to the litigation. The threat of paying the other side’s legal fees potentially stops companies from filing SLAPP suits in the first place.
Although some states, including California, have developed robust anti-SLAPP laws, a federal law is needed to protect and advance First Amendment protections for individuals or groups in federal court. An anti-SLAPP bill introduced in 2015, the SPEAK FREE Act, featured many of the same protections for targets of these lawsuits described above. It would also help defendants sued in states that do not have anti-SLAPP laws or only offer extremely weak protections by allowing them to remove the case to federal court to obtain protections of the SPEAK FREE Act.
EFF is extremely troubled by the latest SLAPP suits filed against organizations such as Greenpeace. Yet we are heartened by the group’s resolve to fight back and to bring attention to this growing threat to free speech.

Interest Groups and PACs
1a. Drug Policy Alliance Network
1b. They aim to end the war on drugs and create new, more liberal drug policies.
1c. They envision new drug policies based on science, compassion, health and human rights and a just society in which the fears, prejudices and punitive prohibitions of today are no more. Their mission is to advance those policies and attitudes that best reduce the harms of both drug use and drug prohibition, and to promote the sovereignty of individuals over their minds and bodies. They believe Marijuana prohibition is an utter failure, we need to educate our youth in drugs rather than punishment, eliminating zero tolerance policies in schools, ending discrimination with drugs, and they believe in replacement therapy.
1d. Bail Reform in New Jersey. New Jersey voters approved a ballot measure to reform New Jersey’s bail system in November 2014. The new law allows judges to deny bail to dangerous individuals – and it ushers in broader bail reform because it is linked to comprehensive legislation that overhauls the state’s broken bail system. Now pretrial release decisions will be made based on risk rather than resources and thousands of low-income individuals – many of whom are behind bars for a low-level drug law violation – will avoid unnecessary jail time. The Drug Policy Alliance and Drug Policy Action played a leading role in efforts to pass both this legislation and the accompanying ballot initiative.
1e. it is based in California, Colorado, New Mexico, New Jersey, and New York. I could not find any upcoming meetings on their website.
1f. They have a lot of interning opportunities in all the states they are based in and a few job opportunities. These jobs/internships have to do with criminal justice, media, drug policy, etc...
1g. I found it very interesting that they wanted schools to be more understanding and compassionate about drugs on school campus. They believe that they zero tolerance policy should be removed and a school should have more leniency.
2a. Drug Policy Forum of California
2b. They are dedicated to news of interest to the California drug reform community.
2c. This is liberal group that believes in legalization of marijuana, don't believe in long sentencing for victimless crimes, ending war on drugs, ending discrimination, and more compassionate drug laws. They plan to bring their beliefs into Washington by advertising and pushing their supporters to vote for politicians who hold the same beliefs as their interest group.
2d. I could not find any actions they have ever done. Their website is pretty much all on who people should vote for and voting in past elections.
2e. I could not find where they are based anywhere on their website or anywhere else on the internet and I couldn't not find any meetings they have coming up as well.
2f. They offer a few volunteering opportunities online for research and advertising.
2g. DrugSense is an award winning (501)(c)(3) non-profit organization incorporated in 1995 to inform citizens and encourage involvement in drug policy reform.
3a. National Association of Assistant U.S. Attorney
3b. NAAUSA was founded to promote, protect, serve, and advocate for the common interests of this nation's front-line federal prosecutors and civil attorneys dedicated to safeguarding justice for all Americans as Assistant United States Attorneys.
3c. It supports parental leave legislation, promotes equal pay for AUSAs, promotes truth in Sentencing, defends the professionalism of AUSAs, and persuades AUSAs to adopt family-friendly workplaces.
3d. NAAUSA, the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, the Law Enforcement Action Network and the National Narcotics Offices’ Associations’ Coalition has sent a letter to all members of the Senate opposing new revisions to the Sentencing Reform and Corrections. They believe the drug system is not broken and is working exactly how expected.
3e. It is centered in Woodbridge, VA, however I would not find any upcoming meetings.
3f. You can become a member but they do not have any volunteering opportunities.
3g. It very interesting that this group seems very progressive in its fight for equal pay and promoting family friendly work places, however they do not support drug reform laws and actually promote the increase in prisons.
4. The NAAUSA seems the most organized and much more successful than any other group considering its prominence and constant public eye. Their target audience is slight conservatives and their supporters seem to be the same.
5.
Camber Corp
A brief statement assessing the position/perspective of the PAC.
They have raised $4,522. They have spent $5,400. They have $18,384 cash on hand.
100% of their budget is spent on Republicans.
Their donors are: BATSON, WALTER P JR, SCHOEMER, BRUCE E, and WALTER, WALTER WALTER. They are all from their corporation which shows that they might be that big of a corporation or maybe they just cheat to get their money.

California Senate Committee Votes Against Privacy for Our Travel Patterns
The Electronic Frontier Foundation and the ACLU of California joined forces with California State Sen. Joel Anderson (R-Alpine) on Tuesday to testify in favor of S.B. 712 (text), a bill that would have allowed drivers to cover their license plates when parked in order to protect their travel patterns from private companies operating automated license plate readers (ALPRs).
The Senate Transportation and Housing Committee heard testimony on how private ALPR companies are collecting massive amounts of data on innocent people's driving patterns and selling it for profit. Despite learning how this data may be misused to target vulnerable communities by the federal government, a Democratic majority voted to kill the bill 5-6.
The bill would have adjusted current law, which allows drivers to cover their entire vehicles (for example with a tarp), so that a driver can cover just a portion: the plate. Police would still have the ability to lift the cover to inspect the plate, and since the measure only applied to parked vehicles, it would not have affected law enforcement's ability to collect data on moving vehicles.

Here's the text of EFF's opening testimony from the hearing:
Mr. Chair and Members.
My name is Dave Maass, and I represent the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a sponsor of S.B. 712. EFF is a non-profit organization that defends civil liberties as the world becomes a more digital place.
I am a researcher who investigates police technology. My previous work has resulted in agencies fixing insecure surveillance cameras, a federal fraud investigation into child-safety software, and increased disclosure of misuse of police databases.
Since November, not a week has gone by when I haven’t been asked the same questions: How do we protect our communities from being targeted? More chillingly, they ask: Do we need to start building a new Underground Railroad?
I immediately think about the massive amount of data being collected by automated license plate readers operated by private companies: billions and billions of data points mapping out our travel patterns. These companies rent this data to law enforcement but they also sell it to the private sector. Lenders examine travel patterns before approving a loan. Insurers look at travel patterns before quoting a rate. Collections agencies use it to hunt down debtors.
A user could easily key in the address of a mosque, an immigration law clinic, an LGBT health center to reveal whole networks of vulnerable communities. A user could program the system to identify associates and get real time alerts about a driver’s whereabouts.
The California Constitution is supposed to protect us from these invasions of our privacy.
In 1972, voters agreed that we have an inalienable right to pursue and obtain privacy. Your predecessors in the legislature explicitly stated this amendment would protect us from computerized mass surveillance by police and private companies.
SB 712 allows Californians to cover our plates when our vehicles are lawfully parked. This is a balanced approach that would not affect how police use ALPR technology to monitor moving vehicles.
Today you are voting on whether we can exercise our constitutional right to privacy against advanced surveillance systems logging our travel patterns. Thank you for this opportunity. I respectfully ask for your aye vote.
These senators voted in favor of the legislation: Sens. Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres), Ted Gaines (R-El Dorado), Mike Morrell (R-Rancho Cucamonga), Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley), and Scott Wiener (D-Sacramento). EFF thanks these lawmakers for their support for motorists’ location privacy.
Voting in opposition were: Sens. Ben Allen (D-Santa Monica), Toni Atkins (D-San Diego), Jim Beall (D-San Jose), Mike McGuire (D-Healdsburg), Richard Roth (D-Riverside), and Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont). Several cited vague public safety and parking enforcement concerns.
Some of these senators acknowledged the threat to our privacy caused by ALPR companies and suggested that different, perhaps more robust legislation was necessary. EFF looks forward to taking these senators at their word and pursuing further privacy protections next session.
The full hearing, including EFF's rebuttal to law enforcement arguments, is available on YouTube.
