Maybe this is the Real World
or What She Wore in the Holovids
So this is a bit of an experiment in fic writing. It fills the gap between Supergirl #22 & #23, Solo #1, Legion of Super-Heroes #313 and Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes #314. It is probably PG-13ish maybe even PG. It is very very long and I am a little terrified to press the post button.
Please be kind as this is not something I have done a lot of.
He was thinking of the shape of her laugh when he smelled what he had done. Another experiment over baked. 1 of 62 he was currently conducting. No matter. It was worth it. She was always worth it even if it was just a fleeting memory.
He set about cleaning the mess and resetting everything to zero when he heard COMPUTO’s voice
“Brainiac 5 you have a visitor waiting in the lobby.”
He was so startled he banged his head on the cabinet door as he shot up. The pain was excruciating but he simply diverted it to a remote corner of his brain. “Visitor?” Who? And why didn’t COMPUTO have their name. He would have to look into it later. For now the mystery pulled him from his failure and he made his way to the lobby still typing on his omnicom as he walked. Was he expecting a shipment? Who would personally accompany any of the items he recently ordered?
As he approached the lobby he barely registered that the noise from the crowd of tourists gathered out front was notably louder than normal, but he had become used to blocking them out so he thought nothing of it. It wasn’t until he looked up that his breath caught in his throat and his hastily typed thoughts tumbled from his trembling fingers. Time froze as he stared at the profile of the woman waving at the crowd through the glass. Yes she was always enough to take any man’s breath away,  but it wasn’t the fact she was here that stopped him cold. He had hoped she would return soon if not expected it. It was what she wore that turned his already tepid Coluan blood ice cold. This outfit, the skirt, the headband, the way her cape fastened to the shield on her chest, the tumultuous cascade of curls that framed her angelic face. This was how she looked in the statues and paintings that they hid from her. This was the image from the holovids of her heroic sacrifice. This was the outfit she would die in.
All these years they had time on their side. Each time she came he would hope she would choose to stay with him and he would wait patiently for her return when she eventually left him again to go back to what she saw as the “real world.”
But now the last grains in her hourglass were about to fall. If he could not keep her close this time there may not be another. The panic burned through his veins like an ice cold fire and he could do nothing but stare.
——————————————
1000 years and a handful of hours earlier
Alone in her tiny apartment the mousy brown haired girl looked up at the the crack in the ceiling over her twin bed and listening to the fat drops of rain pound rhythmically on the sill of her open window. Kara Zor El of Argo City never really lost that nagging feeling that she was play-acting her life as Linda Danvers. It was a mask she had looked through so many times it felt like home but it was never really her. But if that was really true why did Linda Danver’s life always bring her so much pain.
As Supergirl she could move entire planets, save whole civilizations. But Linda couldn’t keep a career, a friend or . . . a man. She had lost 2 in as many months.
Phil Decker. Supergirl could have her pick of a million guys on a hundred planets but Phil Decker had thought so little of Linda Lee Danvers that he had cheated on her and then had the nerve to make her feel like it was her fault. She had been so mad she broke her only telephone. She still hadn’t replaced it. The pieces were sitting in the waste bin by her bed.
Then there was Dick. She hadn’t thought of Dick Malverne for years till he popped back into her life just before . . . before . . . He was so helpless and weak in his hospital bed . . . no that wasn’t true. He was incredibly strong and brave, braver than she could imagine herself being looking death in the face. He had kept her secret all those years. Even she never knew. Would it have changed things? For the better? For the worse? But now he was gone. Another thread of Linda’s life that slipped away while she watched unable to stop it.
She wondered where Joan was. Her roommate had spoken little to her since she’d vented all her pent up anger on the poor woman in the middle of the street. Linda knew she should apologize and make things right but she had so much inside she couldn’t let out..
Tears were streaming down her invulnerable cheek as she shifted to look out the open window hoping to see a wet orange cat come out of the rain. Even Streaky had been coming home less and less. She could go out looking for him as Supergirl, but she knew he had his own life to live. Still. She was lonely.
Kara’s eyes fell on a small silver cube on her shelf. An unassuming metal paperweight to the unsuspecting. But only she knew it’s true purpose. She hadn’t thought of it in months. After all with time travel there was no hurry. But the memory of Dick Malverne dying in front of her suddenly drove a sense of urgency. She sat up and walked over to it bringing it to her bedside. Brainy had given it to her as a gift when she left Orando after Projectra’s royal wedding. It had been a magical weekend.
The cube was a replacement for the statues that had served as signals through time when they were young. He didn’t want Kara to have to explain her lifelike doll collection to strangers. But he didn’t know she still kept his uncannily lifelike figurine in the drawer by her bedside after all these years.  Sometimes even during the long periods when she tried not to return to the legion she would still look at it from time to time and even talk to it and wonder if he could hear her anymore. She took it out now and set it next to the small box and stared at them both her face reflected back at her next to his boyish grin. He had been so young when the 3D image had been taken.
On that last visit she had very nearly stayed with him. He really was wonderful to her in a way she often felt was more than she deserved, though he would never agree. Months she had stayed with him that last long trip. Why had she come back? She told herself she had responsibilities, but half a year and when she returned it was like she hadn’t gone at all.
They had had so much fun, even facing death at the hands of the Empress had seemed so much less dreary than her more recent adventures. Fighting with a team. Her team. Kara Zor El’s childhood friends. Not Linda’s but Kara’s. Hers. Why then did it always feel like a vacation from life instead of life. Maybe that should change.
She touched the box the way he had shown her and she heard Brainy’s voice.
“There are 43 messages of which none have been viewed.“
She felt her tension drop with just that that brief simulation of his voice. She asked it to play the first message and suddenly Brainy, or a hologram of him was standing in her tiny room.
He was grinning, maybe even blushing. She walked up wanting to touch the crease of his genuine smile but as she expected it wasn’t hard light but just a basic projection.
He talked about their friends and experiments of his she had shown an interest in. Often she stopped listening to his words and watched his growing hair dance about his ears. Why hadn’t he gotten a haircut?
Then suddenly somewhere around message 30 he stopped mid sentence.
“I really don’t know why I’m doing these. I assume if you were interested in coming back you would have by now.”
He rubbed his face in his hands. Was he drunk? Exhausted? He turned away Kara got up and was about to walk to the other side of the 3D  image when he turned round and was suddenly looking her right in the eyes
“Kara. I miss you. . . I know you have a “real” life and I know how important you are to Kal. . . And it’s selfish . . .  it’s selfish. I’ve always … I will always love you till the end of the universe. . . No I I can’t send that.”
He moved unsteadily to turn off the recorder but failed. Then still being recorded he slumped down against something she couldn’t see and tears began to flow only for a brief moment before his breath fell into a steady rhythm. She watched him sleep maybe an hour before someone unseen stopped the recording.
He was refreshed in the next message. He reiterated his belief that she would never see these recordings and that he understood he was merely filling his own need to talk to someone who wasn’t expecting something impossible from him. He then began to treat the recordings as a bit of a dry impersonal log. The monotony of his new tone quickly lulled her to sleep then some hours later she woke to.
“It has been a while and . . . It is unlikely you will hear this message. But There is something that might interest you coming up. Do you remember Ontiir who we helped take into custody on Weber’s World? He is finally coming to trial. Sun Boy and I are planning to attend. Dirk still has not forgiven Ontiir for having to spend Val and Projectra’s wedding with his jaw wired shut. . .We-I would love it I you could make it.”
He rattled off a date and time and with that he vanished.
She stared at the place he had been for a moment before uttering
“Well I guess that is when I return.”
She left her apartment through the window to avoid any chance of running into Joan while dressed as Supergirl. She thought about closing the window all the way for a brief moment but in the end she left it open just enough for a mischievous orange cat to slip through.
---------------------------------------
A few moments ago
Kara emerged from the timestream with the kaleidoscope of rainbows still dancing in her eyes. She made her way to Metropolis and Legion Headquarters but what she still thought of as the “new” Legion headquarters, that had replaced their clubhouse years ago, was gone. In its place was an oddly balanced gray building.
Had she overshot the date? How could such a thing be built in the relatively short time since she had been gone? She was about to wonder where the entrance was when a crowd of tourist spotted her. She assumed the place where the crowd had gathered must be the entrance where they could snap pictures of the Legionnaires coming and going. She waved as she flew over the barrier and made her way towards the entrance.
A floating sphere met her mid air before she got there.
“Retired member Kara Zor-El, welcome back. You re not currently authorized to enter the facility.”
That stung but it was her own doing. She had chosen to end her reserve status even though it had hurt so much to do so.
“I am COMPUTO. I am here to be of assistance. Please state the nature of your visit?”
COMPUTO?! She and Brainy would have a lot to talk about indeed.
“I am here to visit Brainiac 5 is he around?”
“Brainiac 5 is currently in his Lab”
Big surprise there. She laughed only slightly.
“Can you please tell him he has a visitor. . . and don’t tell him it is me I would like it to be a surprise.
“Very well please wait in the lobby retired legionnaire Kara Zor-EL”
Why did the word “retired” sting so much.
She waved to the crowd now significantly farther away but still more excited than the Chicagoans she flew over on a regular basis.
She knew the sound of his footfalls long before he reached the lobby and listened to them approach. When he arrive she turned just in time to see his omnicom fall from his fingers. She caught it long before it would have hit the ground and placed it on a nearby chair. A small robot… that looked vaguely like validus … came to retrieve it but as Brainy paid it no mind she simply logged it away as another new thing to ask him about. She wrapped her arms gingerly around his neck and nestled her face into his shoulder. He wore the same pink coverall he had worn since the day they met. It could not have been the exact same one as he was much taller and she had seen him loose suits to explosions and the blades of their enemies before, but it was close enough that it felt like like she was a teenager again. It even smelled the same, the faintest odor of soap mixed with chemicals and burning. Not a scent that would sell well in a department store but she breathed it in deeply like a bouquet of spring flowers and let all the stress of recent months disappear.
---------------------------------------------
Her curls tumbled about his face tickling his cheeks and covering his panicked expression. She smelled as she always did like ozone and time travel. The sweetest smell he had ever known… and he broke. He wrapped his arms around her waist and held her as tightly as he could knowing it would have harmed many of his other teammates. He pushed through her curls to rest his eyes on her shoulder. He was faintly aware of the  rising roar from the crowd across the courtyard but it barely registered in his mind. He let go of every thought he ever had except for the feel of the woman in his arms and he wept.
-------------------------------------------
The tears on her shoulder were warm but alarming. What had happened? In all the the time she knew him Brainy had only cried in extreme situations where he had lost someone or realized he could not stave off an inevitable doom. What could have happened. Was it the little girl he had been treating?
She pushed away slightly to look at his face and he smiled at her for a brief moment but looked down before he spoke.
“I-I….. I missed you Kara.” She wiped the tears from his eyes and they soon slowed and stopped.
Sprock he was beautiful.
She took his emerald chin in her hand and lifted his face.
“I missed you too handsome.”
She pulled him in for a kiss and found him kissing back, Much more passionate than she expected with the crowd watching outside and they loved it. The roar in her Kryptonian ears was palpable.
--------------------------------------------
Querl knew she could sense his desperation, but he didn’t care. He kissed her like the world was about to end because it very well could be.
When they finally broke for air she wouldn’t let him go, Brushing his overgrown hair behind his ears, she slipped her arm around his leading him down the hallway. For all his bravado he was glad to leave their audience behind.
“This place is different? How did you pull all of this off so quickly.”
“Oh. Well it’s actually thanks to you?” The real story was embarrassing but he was going to put all his cards on the table this time.
“Me? And the little Validus? And friendly COMPUTO?”
“Also thanks to you.”
She paused in the hallway for a moment now out of view of the crowd.
“And the little girl? Danielle?”
Her tone was serious. Perhaps she thought his tears were for Danielle?
“She is her rambunctious young self again . . . also thanks to you.”
Kara laughed.
“Ok now I do need to hear this story, but first show me around this new marvel I inspired.”
------------------------------------------------
It felt good. For all that was different about the new headquarters there was much that was the same. Brainy’s lab was bigger this time and there was an entire floor between him and the living quarters because there would inevitably be explosions. That made her laugh. She watched him show her a few of his inventions barely listening to his words, just watching his face as he talked excitedly about them. Mid sentence she walked up and touched the crease of his genuine smile. The one she could not touch on the hologram.
------------------------------------------------
He stopped, forgetting what he was talking about and let her hand pass over his face. Closing his eyes. He wondered what she found so fascinating. He would ask her later.  She leaned in to kiss him again and he realized this was the table that . . .
“I have something else to show you. But it is not in the lab”
“Oh” she said not stopping “I think everything I want to see is right on this table”
He blushed and it made her giggle like they were 16 again.
“It’s worth it I promise”
“Hmmm it better be”
He was suddenly worried he had made a mistake.
But this visit needed to be more. She needed to see she belonged.
Everything depended on it.
--------------------------------------------
The corridor was well lit but quiet at they passed by 2 vacant apartments in the residential wing of the complex. Kara noted that that meant they would have a place for her if she decided to stay a while and for the first time she really admitted that she was thinking of staying, not just a short visit bunking with Brainy, but maybe for at least long enough to figure out the mess that was going on in her head.
Brainy stopped in front of a door with an “S” shield on it. The symbol of the house of EL.
“Is this Kal’s room? Is he here? Are we visiting Kal?”
Brainy looked at her a moment with a puzzled expression on his face.
“No Kara. This is your room. . . I mean it could be. . . if you wanted it to be.”
“You made me a . . .”
The door slid open and she stopped mid thought. It took a moment to process it and Brainy gave her time to look around. The walls were decorated with souvenirs of her adventures with the Legion, some actual items like the mask she wore as “Unknown Boy” and some replicas like Excalibur which she had found and retrieved as part of her Legion initiation, the day she met Brainy. The actual sword was in a museum but this was a near perfect replica. But not everything was a Legion momento. There were 2 hanging baskets of geraniums exactly like the ones on Fred and Edna Danver’s porch. On one whole wall hung a painting that she had not seen since she visited the museum in Kryptonopolis as a young girl. It was abstract but they had once watched a sunset on an alien world and she had mentioned how it reminded her of that painting.
“Is that the one?” She asked imagining an art heist on a dying planet.
“No, no theft would be against Legion code Kara. I used the time viewer and recreated it as best I could”
“You painted this”
“Well COMPUTO helped.” This was her room. Her home. Could be her home. Maybe more than any had been in a long time.
“You did all this?”
“I-I . . . I was optimistic.”
Brainy had stood near the door. Letting her explore on her own, his expression a mix of pride and worry. She kissed his cheek and noticed a panel on the wall near his shoulder.
“Oh what does this do?”
“Um, uh.”
The first button closed the door.
“Kara, uh I .. .”
The second changed the lighting in the room. She could immediately feel it’s effects. The world became heavier, her vision less crisp. But she immediately realized why he put it there.”
“A red sun lamp hmmm”
“I . . . I mean . . . I was optimistic.”
“Even in the red light she could see his green skin blush”
He reached over to press another button and the room filled with intense yellow light and she could feel her powers surge.
“There is a yellow sun lamp as well . . .”
She pushed her hand past his to re-press the red sun button.
---------------------------------------------
Dirk Morgna paced the deck of the tiny cruiser that would take him and Brainy to Weber’s world for the trial of Ontiir. He had a particular beef with Ontiir as his betrayal had caused him to have his jaw wired shut for one of the most spectacular feasts of the millennium. Fortunately it had not hurt his luck with the ladies and the added sympathy points may have even worked in his favor, but still. They all would have died if it had not been for Supergirl activating Brainy’s force shield belt with a carefully calculated super breath. Dirk chuckled as he wondered if they had ever practiced that in private.
Poor Brainy, always waiting for Supergirl to return. How did he do it? Why did he do it? That Dirk would never understand. Brainy was just as much a celebrity as Dirk was and most sentients, even some legionnaires would have jumped at the chance to be with him. But he had always just waited. Even when Dirk saw how much it was killing him.
Just a month earlier Dirk had walked in on Brainy passed out while recording one of his endless series of messages to Kara. He had recorded so many Dirk was sure she had never seen a one of them. Or maybe she had and she saw how well he was doing and figured he didn’t need her. But looking at his tear stained sleeping face still being recorded by the holo-imager Dirk wanted her to know exactly what happened while he waited for her. So he sent it. It didn’t matter she still hadn’t returned.
Dirk was Dirk, he loved women. Just never enough to suffer for one. Never enough that he would be blind to all the others. Maybe he was just a little bit jealous of a love that crossed death and broke the time barrier. What did something like that feel like that you would suffer so much pain to feel it.
“Uuugh” Dirk grunted.
Where was Brainy? They were going to be late.
“COMPUTO! COMPUTO!” He yelled for the small floating sphere though saying its name still made him cringe from bad memories.
“Yes Dirk Morgna, Sun Boy”
“Where the Sprock is Brainy!”
“Querl Dox is currently in Supergirl’s quarters. Would you like me to escort you”
“No I know my way”
Sprock what was he doing? Pining over her again?
Dirk pounded his way to the end of the long hallway . Supergirl’s apartment was on a different floor on the opposite wing from his. In truth he probably should have let COMPUTO guide him but he found it eventually.
“Wakey, wakey, loverboy! We’re gonna be late”
Dirk had totally expected Brainy to be alone moping over the items that reminded him of her, but when the door opened there stood Kara fully dressed and . . . he froze. His heart might have stopped for a full minute as he recognized her outfit and what it meant.
“Sun Boy are you ok?”
He may have been caught off guard but at least he was practiced in recovering from such slips with the ladies.
“This new look is just incredible!”
He reached out to touch her hair and she quickly brushed his hand aside.
“No touching Morgna!”
”No I suppose that is Querl’s job” he smirked a bit to mask his shock and wondered if she was buying it. He looked past her to see Querl still in bed unclothed.
“Kara, we are running late is there any way you could super speed down to the commissary and get us a quick breakfast?” Kara gave him a look that was part disgust and part indignation but she sped off anyway.
“Brainy is that?”
He looked up with a solemn face that confirmed what her new outfit meant.
Kara was already back saving him from having to think of what to say. She whisked around the room and suddenly Brainy was dressed and clean and brushed with a steaming hot cup of something in his hand.
And they were off.
-------------------------------------------------------- Epilogue --------------------------------------------------------
Dirk Morgna stood staring at the 2 coffins. The weight of it hung on him. It took a moment for him to realize that Kara had walked away and Querl had followed her.  The joy that had glowed from her the entire trip had dissipated the moment Chief Zendak had pulled the trigger.
Then suddenly she took off. Not just into the air but into the timestream. He watched helplessly as Querl yelled after her and then hung his head when she vanished. Dirk wanted to say something to him. Wanted to tell him he would get another chance, but he knew Brainy could calculate those odds himself. So he just stood and watched and wondered what it felt like to miss someone like that.

Customized warning i'm a veteran so if you don't want your feelings hurt walk away T shirt - belleteean urban legend. Most movie stars don’t donate huge portions of their salaries to crew members because he thought they deserved the money more. As you’re about to discover, it turns out Keanu Reeves is not your typical movie star.Keanu Reeves was born in 1964 in Beirut, Lebanon to an English mother and Hawaiian-American father. Reeves’s mother was working in Beirut when she met his father, a geologist who earned his GED while in prison in Hawaii for selling heroin at Hilo International Airport. Reeves’s father abandoned his family when Keanu was just three years old. Keanu spent his childhood moving around the world as his costume designer mother worked and married again and again. Stability wasn’t all that present in Reeves’s life as a child and Customized warning i’m a veteran so if you don’t want your feelings hurt walk away T shirt. Reeves lived in Sydney, Australia and New York City for awhile before his family settled in Toronto. He attended four different high schools where he excelled as a hockey player. Reeves had dreams of playing professional hockey. He dropped out of high school before he graduated. A struggle with dyslexia made academics difficult and by then the call of the acting bug had already hit him.
(Customized warning i’m a veteran so if you don’t want your feelings hurt walk away T shirt)
In 7th grade I started getting bullied. I had no friends so I ended up trusting a guy who I shouldn’t have. It was too late until I realized that he was using me for my body. I didn’t know how to stop it because I was taught by my mother to shut my mouth and to not stick up for myself. It went on for a year into the end of may in 8th grade. By then, I was bullied all the time. I was told to go kill myself a lot. A boy made up a title about me being a slut (half my class would sing it to me) and he would talk about me having sex with animals. He also said Hitler was right for killing all those Jews, how they deserved it and he would do the salute to him after he found out I was Jewish. I couldn’t even smile without someone telling me how I was ugly and making disgusted looks or sounds when I did smile. Every time I went to ice hockey practice, I was always reminded how worthless I was, they would laugh at my clothes, and I was blamed for the team losing.

This morning I wake up with this image in my mind alongside memories of last night’s minibus ride and it makes me smile a lot…
Let’s talk about the image first, I’ll ramble about the ride later…
So! Yggdrasil… The Norse version of the tree of life… The way into the 9 Worlds.
This version has always appealed to me more than the Kabbalistic TOL. It fires my imagination more to think of lands filled with Ice Giants, Gods, Dark Elves etc. as opposed to the overly scholarly feel of sephawotsits and other Hebrew words that refuse to stick in my mind or if they do then I’m probably sounding them out incorrectly anyway… And that feels as though it could go disastrously wrong…
But more than that, as a Mathemagician 9 is a symphony of wonders that 10 just doesn’t top… 9 throwing it’s patterns through the mathverse… Multiplications and symmetries, dancing digit sums… Maths is ART! 9… See, if 3 is a magic number, then 9 is magic squared…
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Keep this between you and me, as I have a reputation to live down to… But sometimes when noone is watching, I study… Above is my imagination experiment that sealed the deal for me for once and for all (or until you can elegantly convince me otherwise) that 9 was indeed the number of the sacred tree…
I looked at the diagram of the K TOL and it kind of looked familiar but somehow off… What was it that it reminded me of? Something from childhood… Of playground games… Oh! Water bombs! Origami missiles! Hmmm… But that 10 distorts the pattern… It stretches it out of shape… Like a forced forceps delivery elongating a baby’s head as it’s dragged from the mother world onto earth…
Now 9, that’s a perfect transposition… 9 the 3×3 magic squared flat on paper, blow in the breath of life and flattened 2 dimensions become 3D. 3x3x3D. Breath births magic cubed to perfection! A universe is born! A universe of 9 worlds with 22 paths to travel… A confirmation (possibly fabricated) that 22 was the number goal for the cards in the D. 0.
This delights me but I’ll go on no further as…
In the words of Dan Brown
Telling someone about what a symbol means is like telling someone how music should make them feel
Moving from one quote to another…
We live in strange times. We also live in strange places: each in a universe of our own. Douglas Adams.
This lands me back in the minibus… Yesterday morning’s adventure after blown tyre went down well with my crew of 6. Arriving at home time in the big white Renault, pleased them more. Sure, my Galaxy is a sweet ride but filled with 7, it ain’t heaven as logistics are applied factoring in leg lengths and drop off points to see how we can load and unload with minimum scrambling… So… A nifty 9 seater! Oh joy!
“Hey Karen! You only had to change the tyre! Not the whole vehicle! I’m calling shotgun!”
Fully loaded, with 2 seats to spare, I call out “Hey kiddos! Where do you want to go?”
“Hooooooooome!”
“Pub!”
“Argghhh! Pubs are shut!”
“C’mon kiddos! Momma’s gotta full tank! Try harder!”
“Camping!”
“Yeah, camping! There’s enough room in here for us all to sleep!”
“Camping where?”
“Wales?”
“Gower Peninsula?”
Mr Hoooooome changes to “Beaches! Oh yeah! I’m in!”
We transport ourselves through realms of imagination and enjoy a 2 week summer vacation during our mundane half hour commute… A commute that for a while became an escape route from this world and all its problems…
I wake up this morning smiling about this. Ah! My pals are flexing their imaginations… I’m driving but now they’re taking me places! In their world, they’ve often called me a strange little thing as none of them really understood why I never got bored of driving… But now topsy turvy world has them rolling into my world, letting slip their eccentricities, and exploring the
I Magi Nation…
It’s a good place to be!
Transport This morning I wake up with this image in my mind alongside memories of last night's minibus ride and it makes me smile a lot...
