The lack of concrete elf aging rules in elder scrolls is wild because people’s characters can have totally different ages while being in the same ‘life stage’
Like there’ll be an 80-year-old ‘teenager’, 100-year-old ‘middle aged dad’, a 200-year-old who’s also a ‘middle-aged dad’, and 500-year-old ‘young adult’

Hey, friends!
Please check out Amal (@amalashuor)and her family's story and campaign! [Vetted: #175]
You can see there that Amal's family is young and small, just two young parents and their young child, but now they are also providing for their extended families - 25 people - through this campaign.
Because Rafah Crossing still has not reopened, they are still in danger every single day, while also dealing with the very, very high prices of basic necessities. The funds, while they cannot leave, are thus being used for their daily needs. That means your donations will help them, whether or not evacuation is possible at the moment.
Amal and her family have been trying to raise funds but donations have been really slow to come in. A number of other users have been making posts to help boost the campaign because of this. Currently, they have raised €48,612 raised out of the €75,000 target.
Also, you can enter an art raffle if you donate!
ETA:
You may have seen Amal's campaign previously shared as having a €50,000 target. They have increased the target because they have gone through the most of the funds that they do have, and donations are still coming in very slowly. And apart from basic needs for food, Maryam, Amal's young daughter is now sick. Antipyretics cost more than $10 and antibiotics cost $20. And among the adults in their 25-member extended families, some have diabetes, hypertension, and mental illness.

COVID is still a problem, and we need to do more to stop it - Published Nov 1, 2024
By Kevin Kavanagh
Prevention of COVID-19 is of utmost importance. For several years, many in our society largely based their COVID recommendations on a one infection and done strategy. We now know that many are coming down with multiple bouts of the disease. We were told that severe outcomes were hospitalization and death, otherwise you had a mild disease. Now we are faced with crippling long COVID which has ravaged many in our society. In the United Kingdom, long COVID affects as many as 33.6% of healthcare workers. At the same time, we were assured our children are safe, they will almost never get severely sick from the virus. However, we started seeing long-term effects from COVID-19 in some of the children we know, and hoped they were outliers. Some of us even believed that children could not spread the infection.
These beliefs, many of which were perpetuated by some of our leaders, have placed our children in peril. It is almost impossible to find a vaccine for very young children due to lack of demand and far too few settings frequented by our children have instituted COVID mitigation strategies, such as clean air.
The gravity of this situation has been driven home by a recent NIH study which found that “20% of kids (ages 6-11) and 14% of teens met (the) researchers’ threshold for long COVID.” And our children keep becoming reinfected which increases their risk of severe damage. Damage which can affect the brain, cause heart/lung disease, diabetes and lower one’s ability to fight infections. Viral persistence, as can be seen in mononucleosis, herpes and AIDS. Evidence is emerging that this may be taking place in 43% of adult patients who have long COVID with heart, lung, musculoskeletal, or neurological symptoms.
Children less than 6 months of age are at a particularly high risk for severe COVID-19, but can be protected by maternal vaccination, allowing transplacental transfer of antibodies.
Similar to other respiratory spread diseases, children are germ magnets. In Sweden, 70% of non-healthcare COVID-19 outbreaks were associated with elementary, grammar, or nursery schools. A study from Boston’s Children’s hospital also found that 70% of household COVID transmissions started with a child.
Childhood vaccinations can help. COVID vaccinations have been observed to cut childhood COVID-19 hospitalizations in half. And research has found that vaccinations can decrease the chances of a child developing long COVID by 35 to 42%. And yes, vaccinations are not free of complications, but they are a much better plan than getting the disease.
Clean air in school buildings supplemented with HEPA filtration and UV-C germicidal lighting is a first step. Keeping children home when sick is also important as is being up to date with childhood vaccinations, including COVID-19. Other steps may involve changing the school year, so breaks are scheduled during the peaks of respiratory diseases. And to be tolerant of masking. Masks have been shown to decrease the spread of diseases in schools in multiple studies, and their banning, as proposed this fall in the city of Louisville, places all at risk.

it’s interesting to see how people in this fandom react to events where teenagers are alone in high-risk situations with no adult supervision. and it’s not even about lazy writing, where the writers are like “well this teens adventure novel, they won’t just go to school.. they need to go on adventures and such!! even if they’re 15”
it’s about time periods.
like my parents in the 70s, when they were teenagers, already went on the hikes to another country with no adult supervision and took pretty heavy for children odd jobs. and the whole independence from the young age was encouraged (take in consideration the fact, that im from Ukraine and in the 70s my country was still a part of USSR).
the farther we go into the past, the more distorted the concept of appropriate age for this character is. like Dikke being 19 yo, barely an adult , was considered being middle aged at medieval times. like yeah, if average life expectancy of that time was 35 at best, she’s 40 for our modern society. and if we consider war time for each country that was mentioned … oh boy, it’s even more distorted after more peaceful times, stress really ages you.
and if we’re talking about Vertin’s team… i’m glad that they act pretty much to their age. they feel like teenagers with too much responsibility on their shoulders, especially Vertin… trauma made her that way.
all of this is just me rambling with no fact checks tho
EDIT: i was corrected on the fact that people in Middle Ages had shorter life expectancy, it’s just that many children at that time died before turning 5 y.o. and that’s why the average life expectancy was skewed. so Dikke would be considered a young lady and NOT middle-aged

Was rewatching Rickternal Friendshine and it led to a long and futile attempt to figure out Rick’s age:
SO Rick says that Memory Rick is 35 (5.08), I don’t see how this can be wrong unless Rick forgot what age he was in Birdperson’s memory or makes a wrong assumption.
Memory Rick doesn’t know who Morty is but he says “You’re one of those creeps who moves in with abandoned adult Beths” WHICH MEANS Beth is 18-21 when Rick is 35. I’m going to assume 18 because that means Rick would’ve had her when he was 17-18.
In Fear No Mort (7.10), Rick de-ages himself to 27 for Diane. This could just be Morty’s guess for how old Rick was when he lost his family, but it’s all the information we have now so I’m going to go off of it.
35 - 27 = 8, which lines up with Beth’s age, because that would mean she was 10 years old when she died, and she looks to be about 10 in the flashback (5.10).
Rick moves back in when Summer is 17 and Beth is 34, meaning that’s 35 + 17, which would make current day Rick 52 years old.
HOWEVER, Toxic Rick says that Rick is 70 (3.06). This is like. The only confirmation of age he’s ever given us, but it means there’s a 18 years period where he aged but his family didn’t. I can see a sci fi reason for this but it is like, a lot of time that isn’t accounted for.
Other ways this can be adjusted is: 1.) that Birdperson’s memory of what Rick knew at what age is a little fuzzy, which would make a lot of sense given they’ve known each other a long time and he’s had his brain messed with a lot, or 2.) Morty’s guess that Rick was 27 is inaccurate. This is a little harder to change because of Beth’s age. In the flashback, she doesn’t look to be more than 12 maybe. But if she’s 12 that would mean Rick and Diane had her at when he was 15, which I don’t think is the case because they would’ve probably said something if Rick was that young. Still, we can give or take a year.
CAVEATS:
The Principal says Rick is an 80 year old man (2.07). We can probably dismiss this because the principal doesn’t know Rick.
I don’t know where this is said in the show but a lot of Rick and Morty wikis say Rick wasn’t in Beth’s life for 20 years. This can mean a lot of things. It could mean that Rick left at 27 and came back 20 years later, making current day Rick 47, but that’s way too young. More likely is that Rick came back into a Beth’s life temporarily when she was 14-ish and the left again for 20 years. This doesn’t make a lot of sense, and since I don’t know where the 20 years thing came from or if it’s even said in the show, I’m going to tentatively dismiss it.
Rick’s memory and picture of holding a baby Morty (1.10 & 2.05) are still unexplained. Best guess is that Rick stopped by a random universe temporarily just to see what his grandson was like. A bunch of Ricks first started coming back when Summer was born so it would be consistent that he would do it again for grandkid #2.
CONCLUSIONS:
Obviously Rick’s age keeps changing because the writers didn’t have his full timeline and backstory planned from the beginning, but it ends up hilariously making it so he keeps getting younger every time his age is mentioned:
2.07 -> 80 years old (unreliable, from person who doesn’t know Rick)
3.06 -> 70 years old (reliable, from Rick himself)
5.08 & 7.10 -> 52 years old (uncertain, from mix of Birdperson, Rick, and Morty’s assumptions of each other)
The most likely explanation we’re going to be given if the writers go back to this or decide to explain it is that something sci fi happened where Rick was stuck aging while no one else did.
—————
Please tell me if I missed something 😭. I tried to cite every relevant episode but I might of missed where they said something about his age or the timeline somewhere else.

How old the cast was when they died gives me massive brainrot. Especially Angel and Husk.
Angel was in his mid-30's. He gives young adult vibes but he lived to be a grown ass man that (especially in the 40's when he died) would have been expected to have a house, a wife, and kids (again, 1940's societal expectations, whether or not gay mobster Anthony had any of that IDK). And again, this man could have very much fought in WW2 and died a fucking veteran. His age matches up, he would have been in his early 30's/ late 20's when the draft started in the US. (Assuming he was 35 in '47 then he would have been 28 when the draft started.)
Then you have Husk. The oldest member of the cast in terms of how old he was when he died. He was in his 70's when he died in the 1970's. A man born in the fucking 1900's if not the late 1890's. A man who lived to see insane societal and technological advancement. He also may have been a WW2 vet, he would have been on the older end of the draft, but still included in it. He has lived through so much just by virtue of the eras he lived through. This isn't including whatever it is he had to live through in his personal life. Like, not only could he have had kids, but he could have had grandkids. I wonder if he did, and I wonder if his grandkids are still alive, hell, his kids could still be alive too.
I hope we get more info on their human lives, because I have too much brainrot.

Here’s a quick rundown of a monsters lifespan:
A common monster has a life expectancy of 700 years give or take. The oldest monster in record (that wasn’t a royal) was a Drake monster who lived 732 years.
They are considered infants/babies up until the age of two. Toddlerhood is from 2-6
Children are from the ages of 7-13. Most monsters start public school at ages 7-8
Teenagers are from 14-19. Monsters mature at a slower rate than humans, and so while the body may look grown in the later teen years, they have yet to develop sexual maturity until around 20.
Once 20 they are considered adults, but some subspecies can continue growing up till 30
After puberty in the early 19-22 range, a monster is considered a young adult from 25-190. You can compare those ages to a human in their early to mid 20s physically
Middle Ages range from 200s- 400s roughly
500s are considered older and retirement age, 600s are elderly. Anything past 680 is fragile
The lifespan goes down with halfbreed monsters ( “full” monster parent and “full” human parent) where they live around 600-650 years
The lifespan takes a bigger drop for mages who have an expectancy of 250 years. Witches (humans who have trained to use magic) are known to live up to their 130s if they aren’t soulbonded to a monster partner.
Monsters and half breeds born with the disease called dimming rarely live past their 400s
An exception to the monster lifespan are the “royals”. They take a ritual after being voted into office that binds them to their country, making it so that any decisions they make for the country has to be for its and the peoples benefit (as far as they believe), making them a servant to ebott for the rest of their lives, but extending their life and health in return. The ritual can be broken for the royals who wish to retire and die in peace. The oldest recorded ruler was rumored to be around three thousand
And now the crash!!
For those who don’t know what that is, it’s when all the AUs merged (and my excuse for why all these guys are in the same place lol).
The crash started 17 years ago, and ended within 9 months. Since then no other mystery groups of monsters have been discovered.
Here’s a brief timeline of ebott from crash until now
First day: the land mass that holds ebott appears
Day 2: undertale, underswap, gastertale,, dancetale, theatretale, templetale, all the “farm” AUs, “lust” AUs and the “outer” AUs
Month one: the bird AUs fall from the sky, the nomads stumble out of the forest and the sea AUs mysteriously arrive on ship to shore
Month two, after two months, most of the fell aus (underfell, swapfell, fellswap gold) appear
Month three, the factory (mafias) monsters appear along with the “ghost city” now inhabited and known as ebott city, the capitol. A few weeks later, the fallout monsters appear and ebotts first official hospitals are created
Month four, the royals are finally brought together after threats of inner fighting, and Asgore is voted in as the king
Things settle for four more months, and the new land is explored, vary basic laws are out into place, and things start getting divided into districts.
Month five: Ebott makes contact with several other countries and is introduced to the worlds currency system. Ebotts gold, silver, copper coins is recognized as a currency by the rest of the world
Month seven, the first and only orphanage is founded for any unclaimed children.
On month nine of the crash, the monsters finally access the underground, and to their horror, they find three separate chambers housing the starving horror AUs who had no idea everything that was going on above.
Month ten, land is sold and divided, and ebott begins creating large scale farms
May 20, 2007, ebott celebrates their first official year as a country. The capitol city is named new ebott (cause Asgore sucks at naming things and frankly the rest of the royals aren’t much better)
May 30th, the royal guard is finally re-organized
December 2007, ebotts first countrywide gyftmas celebration, also an official design for the flag and coins are voted on and implemented
February 2008, the first official jail is built and used in ebott lol
July 2008, ebott is finally let into the rest of the worlds internet, and electricity reaches more areas besides just ebott city
August 2008, ebotts children and teens discover tik tok, and it is unanimously decided by every one that a standard public school has to be created
Late august 2008, the first public school is finished in city center
September 2008, the number of school sites number around 300, and counting
January 2009, ebott state college is built and open
April 2009, the ebott scouts is formed, and children hoping to join the guard in the future are able to sign up.
March 2010, ebott is opened by presiding countries for international students and charity programs
November 2010, the following of lady magic opens the temple to the public, and takes over the maintenance of what used to be known as the horrors underground. A grotto is transformed into a place of remembrance for those left behind before the crash
May 2011, the core from the stable underground is moved to the surface and duplicated into several other power factories. All of inhabited ebott is at least within an hour of power
May 2012, the stable underground is open to the public as a tourist attraction. Ebotts is opened by presiding countries to tourism
February 2013, because of public pressure from mainly farm, bird, lusts and the temple monsters, human-monster marriages are now recognized under the state as valid
July 2013 A farm monster discovers how to successfully cultivate magic crops from the underground, aboveground. He shares the secret for free, and other farm monsters take initiative to start sharing their own crop secrets. He is awarded the title of prince.
January 2014 Due to complaints about side effects from human foods, money is poured into research about safer ways to process and preserve foods in ebott.
April 2014, mellowmart becomes the largest company in ebott, finally beating out Walmart in scale.
December 2016, ebott petitions to be recognized as a free independent country to the United Nations. Ebott is turned down
December 2017, ebott petitions again to be recognized as an independent nation
February 2017 Immigration into ebott is closed, and monsters begin boycotting imported human goods. The ebott navy is built.
July 2017, ebott is declared an independent nation
March 2018, the royals declare ebott self sufficient in feeding the country when the amount of food related exports finally exceeds the imports for the first time
July 2018, ebott celebrates its first freedom festival
October 2018, the first college dedicated to the arts is opened in the captitol
July 2019, magical spars are declared the national sport after a grueling battle between spar fans and pickleball fans
November 2019, the first echo festival is celebrated in Goldenvalley
February 2020, humans not born in ebott are finally allowed to apply for citizenship, and the process for that is created.
April 2020 the goldenflower festival is organized for the first time
September 2020, several big brands like coco cola, Hersheys and nestle are banned in ebott when complaints of health issues becomes too much
March 2021, Wendy’s becomes the first company to create a monster-safe fast food outside of ebott, and after months of testing, is given permission to sell. Many other food companies follow and begin making separate recipes for their monster customers
May 2022, snails are declared the national animal of ebott, and popular snail breeds are recognized and the society of the domesticated snail is created for shows and licenses
November 2022, a different country tries to declare war on ebott on the grounds of them “stealing” their young working force (immigrant workers). Ebott threatens to close borders to tourists, those coming for medical care, and all outside companies selling in their lands. The untied nations slaps down the country declaring war.
February 2023, a new branch of the royal guard, called the NPTRF (national people’s trafficking relief foundation) or more commonly called the reverse kidnappers by ebotts supportive teens, is founded to combat the rapidly rising issue of monsters and humans being trafficked and dragged outside the country

Note
you mentioned keeping quirrel alive. if i recall, after he take the mask off in the Archive he mentions felling old(as if the mask was keeping him young to fulfill his duty). so how old do you place him relative to other mortal bugs like elderbug and zote
He would certainly be on the older side, though I do think the mask slowed down his aging process a bit (aside from maintaining his peak form, which is the main reason why he felt so tired and old after losing it).
I imagine he was very young while he was Monomon's student/apprentice, maybe even a teenager (since the bugs reach maturity sooner, he would technically be an adult while being around 16 or 17), so he was given the mask while still young. The dreamers went to sleep around 45 years prior to FPK waking up from hibernation, and about 50 years prior to now (as a point of reference: Lewk was born about 4-5 years after FPK woke up frim hibernation and reunited with Grimm, Asta and Milo were born a year later, the current AU timeline is "frozen" 2-3 months after they were born).
So Quirrel would be nearing 70 now, which is about the average lifespan for most bug species in the AU. But with the mask slowing down his aging, I think he's physically closer to 50. Still considered old by their standards, but not near-death old. He still has plenty of life left in him, he's just not as youthful and strong as he used to. This is why I imagine he decided to spend the rest of his life continuing Monomon's legacy, to honor her and to live the time he has left in peace.
Elderbug is actually far younger than that, I place him at just under 40. He was stated to be the oldest bug in Dirtmouth, and because its population was very low for the longest time (and the mortality rate was high due to the infection), nearing 40 would be an achievement worthy of such title. He was born soon after the infection returned, so he didn't experience the short period of peace after Holly's sealing.
Zote, as I mentioned before, is actually fairly young, in his early 20s I imagine. He looks and sounds older because of bad genes and his desire to sound more like a mature warrior. But he's very much a confused young adult, no matter how much he tries to hide it.
Iselda and Cornifer are similar in age, they would be in their 30s. I think Iselda might be a little bit older than Cornifer, but it's a difference of a few years at most.
Ogrim is a strange case if I'm being honest. He's been around for many, many years, far longer than the average lifespan. It's possible that FPK somehow halted the aging process of his great knights, or at the very least slowed it down significantly (if that's the case, then perhaps he was also responsible for Quirrel's slowed aging. Maybe it was Monomon's last request?). He was around for the encounter with The Shade Lord/Black Wyrm, which happened around 50 years before FPK's hibernation, but he was already a knight that so he could've been born 20 years prior to that. Let's go with that (I don't think the exact numbers matter here), that means he was 70 when FPK disappeared, and adding the 35 years when FPK was hibernating and the 5 years after his return, that would mean Ogrim is around 110 years old. Quite an impressive age for sure. But with the slowed down/halted age, I think he's closer to 50. I do think his species has a longer average lifespan than most species in Hallownest, so he's not actually that old in that context. But definitely not as youthful as he once was.
Tiso is in his 20s, similar age to Zote. Lemm is 30-40, Sly is in his 40s, the nailmaster brothers are nearing 30. Lurien didn't age during his time as a dreamer so he's in his 40s.
I'm definitely missing some characters here but these are the ones off the top of my head.

The following description was written by Sloane Angel Hilton, the creator of the facebook group for this aesthetic: Its rise and fall between the years 1996-2002 - a movement in pop culture that is spawned from the research of The Y2K Aesthetic Institute. A notable shift in the visual mood of pop culture happened during the turn of the millennium, but it wasn’t Y2K Aesthetic. One thing I have found is that it was en vogue to be between 25-35, the prime age of Gen X at this time. I think of the “Music First” era of Vh1 programming. Contrary to contemporaneous Y2K Aesthetic, and also McBling style of the early 2000s, Gen X Y/AC models in editorial fashion or artist marketing were much more "natural". You will see tons of nude lipstick, hair parted down the middle or natural textured hair, natural leathers, knee high boots, duster jackets, natural and muted colors - especially greens, beiges, tans, greys, and black. Design and fashion was moving from 60s revival into early 70s. Retro-futurism was Y2K Aesthetic, but Gen X YAC was more terrestrial. Its futurism was a mix of sterile and organic. McBling was a full blown disco revival, but here, we just see hints of the 70s. Depictions of city life through a colonialist lens. First wave gentrification. Urban life influenced graphic design, such as in the use of Helvetica as inspired by the NYC subway signs. The rise of a minimalist design revival. On the runway, the rise/peak of the modern supermodel - Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, and Linda Evangelista, who were all peaking at 25. In photography and film, prevalence of bleach bypass, cross processing, “Lomo effect”, and other color grading trends. Hit music in the US was heavily influenced or even imported from the UK and Europe. Notably, we saw a surge in french house/disco, big beat, electronic, trance, uk garage, and “easy listening”/adult contemporary marketed for Generation X. Less Pure Moods and more Cafe Del Mar. Pop artists were reinvented to fit, like Madonna (Ray of Light). "Soft Club" refers to club culture trickling down into mainstream culture. As the style shifts into McBling, club culture becomes so huge that only the rich can enjoy it in Ibiza. R&B + hip hop had a marked shift in production, due to producers like Soulshock and Karlin, Trackmasters, Darkchild/Rodney Jerkins, in addition to many more who formed top of the millennium sounds working with both these genres. Pop music was equally transformed by club music, R&B, and Latin pop. Rock, pop and poetry were put over trip/hip-hop & breakbeats. Songs that may not have been written for the dance floor were produced as club music. See: soft club. Get X young adults were into entrepreneurship, which supposedly fueled the 90s economic recovery, especially via tech industry. This is why they have been considered a generation which "sold out". Discussion is much deserved regarding the nature of media diversity, both genuine (largely POC in leading production roles across mediums) and as a marketing tool, and the start of gentrification as it would come to be known in post-industrial cities.

"Trans away the gay": "Being gay should NOT be a medical problem in 2023
Andrew Doyle: Speaking in the House of Commons this week, the UK Secretary of State for Women and Equalities, Kemi Badenoch said the following:
Kemi Badenoch: "We are seeing, I would say, almost an epidemic of young gay children, young gay children, being told that they are trans, and being put on a medical pathway for irreversible decisions and they are regretting it. That is what I'm doing for young LGBT children. I am making sure, I am making sure that young people do not find themselves sterilized because they are being exploited by people who do not understand what these issues are."
Strong words from Kemi Badenoch, but joining me now to discuss it is Dennis Kavanagh, director of the Gay Men's Network.
It is very refreshing to hear a member of parliament stand up in the House of Commons and say this, because this, the debate has been silenced on this for so long, hasn't it?
Dennis Kavanagh: Well, that's right, as you probably know Andrew, in 2015 when Stonewall adopted extreme gender identity ideology, they also adopted a tactic which they called "No Debate," and it's as simple as it sounds. It meant that they would present a series of extremist demands, and absolutely not debate any policy, any proposition, and woe betide anyone who challenged them. They would be canceled, they'd be called transphobic, they'd be called bigots.
"No Debate" died in the House of Commons on Wednesday of this week, and as I wrote this week, the last rites were administered by Kemi Badenoch. And thank goodness that it is gone, because behind "No Debate," the very constituency Stonewall was set up to serve and represent, gay people, were being hurt by this. You and I have spoken before. We know that 80 to 90% of children, and I remind people this is children we're talking about, at the Tavistock were same-sex attracted, 35% autistic, 70% presenting with five or so comorbidities. Deeply, deeply, deeply vulnerable people. The sort of people who were facing irreversible medical changes, and what are the gay rights charities doing? They're saying there should be no discussion about this.
Doyle: So, that's really interesting, because you know, you saw in that clip the MP Chris Bryant on the other side of the house, effectively sneering at what she's -- now he's a gay man and he's sort of saying that he believes that he's standing up for gay people. Stonewall would say that they are standing up for gay people. So what would you say to that? How is it that they are in fact damaging gay people?
Kavanagh: It's just ludicrous because if you look at that exchange in Parliament, what happened was the Secretary of State for Women and Equalities, Kemi Badenoch, made a series of very sensible points about what's going on in gender medicine. I want to emphasize this isn't party political. She herself said this isn't a left-right issue. She had exchanges with the heroic Neil Hanvey MP from the Alba party and the brilliant Joanna Cherry KC MP from the Scottish National Party, I'm sure I've seen her have similar exchanges with Rosie Duffield from the Labor Party and these are adult exchanges about pediatric medicine.
Now, Sir Chris Bryant sadly stood up in the chamber about this serious area and simply said, which I found rather odd, simply said, "well what the Secretary of State said has made me feel less safe." That's extraordinary for a grown man to be saying that across the floor of the chamber. It's embarrassing to me to hear a gay man say it.
Doyle: I mean, he might feel less safe, we can't talk about his emotions, I suppose, but what about the gay people, gay young children who are being fast-tracked onto medication because they're not the norm?
Kavanagh: Yeah, what a very good point. You want to talk about safety, Sir Chris Bryant, let's talk about the safety of Keira Bell. Now, the Secretary of State spoke to Keira Bell. Keira Bell is a lesbian, a detransitioner who was so badly hurt by gender medicine at the Tavistock, she mounted a remedy in judicial review in 2020. If we're going to talk about anyone's safety in this debate, let's talk about the safety of vulnerable young gay and lesbian children, vulnerable autistic children. Let's be honest what's going on here. This "I feel unsafe" is just a continuation of "no debate." It's just a different way of saying, "shut up you should feel bad because you've made me, a gay man, upset." That is not an adult way to have a debate. And it's particularly inappropriate when we're talking about pediatric medicine. We're talking about the health of young gay people, young lesbians, and young people on the autistic spectrum.
Doyle: Yes, but the problem is that a lot of gay people like Chris Bryant do seem to support these views, and do seem to think that anyone who is raising concerns such as yourself, is coming from a place of -- what is it, transphobia? Hatred? Bigotry? Whatever. Why is it the case that so many within -- well, shall I say, our community seem to support incredibly anti-gay movements? What's going on there?
Kavanagh: I ask myself this every day, cause we're all looking at the same evidence, right? I've read the Interim Cass Review where Hillary Cass, quote, "spoke to lesbians who reported pressure to trans identify because they felt they were at the bottom of the heap." We've read the Times article. You know, there was a dark joke amongst Tavistock staff, "soon there will be no gay people left." We've read the case of Sonia Appleby, the safeguarding lead who said the malign influence of Mermaids was leading to children being fast-tracked to making irreversible medical decisions. So I don't think I really know the answer to your question, Andrew, because we're all looking at the same thing. It's almost like they're blinded by Stonewall briefing sheets, because I hear a continuation of "no debate" tactics. They won't brook any criticism of what is increasingly being shown to be a global medical scandal.
Doyle: But this this part of a broader problem in our culture, which is now all sorts of political differences and ideological differences seem to be interpreted as a matter of good versus evil. Stonewall has come down and has been, for whatever reason, perceived as being the goodies, and so everyone who opposes them is perceived as being the baddies. It's very simplistic, like a Disney view of the world where there are heroes and villains. But actually, of course, if you're going to talk about goodies and baddies, I would say the people who don't want to medicalize gay kids are probably on the good side.
Kavanagh: Well, I would be with you on that. I think that's probably the right approach.
Doyle: Are Stonewall dining out on their old reputation? Because they did do a lot of good for gay rights.
Kavanagh: Yeah, absolutely, but I mean, they're in freefall in terms of being taken seriously. The reality is that Stonewall achieved gay marriage primarily through discussion, primarily through having a debate. That all changed in 2015 with the adoption of extreme gender ideology and "no debate." This is a different beast to what it was.
Doyle: Yes, so what can we do about this? How can we raise awareness of it, because a lot of people just don't believe it's happening, a lot of people haven't read the Cass Review, a lot of people don't understand the implications on gay people, and they don't understand that when you promote gender identity ideology in this way that we are actually taking gay rights backwards. They think it's a nonsense, because they are so used to hearing about LGBT, that this is one whole thing, one happy family. So how do we change that narrative?
Kavanagh: What we've got to do is change the discourse and this week has been a powerful step forward in doing that. Kemi Badenoch said the sorts of things -- and so did Neil Hanvey and Jo Cherry in the chamber of the commons that would have got them banned from social media three years ago. That came off the back of Neil Hanvey MP saying in Westminster Hall, there are fears about transing the gay away. The next day there was a constructive and brilliant debate in the House of Lords led by Baroness Jenkin, in which I particularly noted one peer very movingly speaking about the plight of autistic children who, obviously I'm here for gay rights, autistic children are often forgotten in this as well.
Doyle: Because they are disproportionately represented in those who go to the Tavistock, who have symptoms of gender dysphoria.
Kavanagh: 35%, Andrew, 35% of the patient cohort compared to 2% in the general population. So, I think the answer to your question is, we've got to keep spreading the word, we've got to keep changing the discourse, and what happened in the commons, Kemi Badenoch in particular saying the unsayable, but people across the House doing that. That changes the discourse. That gives people the power to speak about this and the strength to speak about it. And we should speak about this. These are deeply, deeply, deeply vulnerable children.
2018, Dr David Bell reported instances of homophobic parents bringing children to the Tavistock to put them on puberty blockers to effectively trans away the gay. We have to have this conversation. Puberty is a human right, and it is a gay right to grow up free from surgery. And in 2023, being gay shouldn't be a medical problem.
Doyle: Excellent, thank you so much for joining me, Dennis Kavanagh.
==
"No debate" and "I feel unsafe" are charges of blasphemy. We don't entertain accusations of blasphemy. We laugh at those who mount such claims, and notice that they only do so because their ideas don't stand up to scrutiny; if they did, they wouldn't have to resort to defending them with feelings.
