Daily Rise Quotes: DAY 331
Tim: You know what? I like the pep of your pizza, and the squeak of your sneaks! How'd you like to be-
Leo: Your new power forward who makes the winning dunk in game seven?
Tim: Of course not! You're just a random guy with oddly green skin playing in the park.

pride's gonna be the death of you
for @corrodedcoffinfest popup event prompt 'pride'
rated t | 331 words | cw: implied drug use, implied drug addiction | tags: modern au, famous corroded coffin, angst with a hopeful ending
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
his pride is what gets him in the end. it gets all of them.
they flew too close to the sun, didn't heed the warnings of their family and friends, let their fame get the best of them.
now eddie is trying to apologize to fans for something everyone but them saw coming. he has to suck it up and admit he fucked up, and they all fucked up, and they can't do something that was promised. he has to do all of it because he's the frontman, the leader, and it'll "look best coming from him."
he sits on a comfy chair that he doesn't deserve to sit in and radiates positive energy that he doesn't feel while a late night tv host helps him deal the blow that their world tour has been postponed indefinitely.
he gives the pre-approved reason-- the plan was too big for the budget, they have to go back to the drawing board-- and apologizes enough times that he almost starts to believe that this couldn't have been avoided. almost.
when he gets backstage, the guys have all texted him saying they're sorry he had to do it alone. he knows they are. it doesn't change the fact that they're watching on their couches and he's about to face a hellstorm of fans outside the backdoor.
his hired car is waiting on the other side of the door, past hundreds of fans who watched the interview live, who may be pissed or may believe the lies he told on camera.
security walks him to the car and he barely even registers the people snapping selfies that he barely poses for along the way. he thinks he signed autographs, but he doesn't have a sharpie mark on his middle finger like he usually gets.
he couldn't admit when things got to be too much, so now he has to suck up his pride.
he hopes the rehab facility is as nice as wayne says it is.

Fanworks and Seriality
The flexible transmedia seriality of fan works becomes obvious in those which have “escaped” fan culture to become mainstream successes. Mainstream audiences often attempt to retroactively build a baseline to make sense of fan works’ narrative and aesthetic experimentation; yet, without access to the history of other fan works, they start from a much more information-light interpretative position than those within the fan community. Their interpretations are not “wrong”, as fan work itself is premised upon audience autonomy and interpretative freedom, but they lack access to the sequence of previous texts against which the fan work gains increased audience. They thereby read the climax of a serial narrative as if it were a stand-alone statement. Kustritz, A. M. 2014. “Seriality and Transmediality in the Fan Multiverse: Flexible and Multiple Narrative Structures in Fan Fiction, Art, and Vids.” TV/Series, No. 6, 225-261. https://doi.org/10.4000/tvseries.331

Do you have any recommendations on good ways to find mythic/folkloric references? My untrained low-knowledge self currently only really uses what I find through search engines. That rarely lets me stumble upon niche sites that collate myths/folklore unless I already know the exact phrasing or name of the story the thing is from. If it helps, currently I'm trying to research banishment/containment devices for evil spirits, demons, etc. The demon sealing jar I've repeatedly come across in media especially intrigues me, though its origin seems to not exist???
I do have a post with my go-to websites for research, but I must admit those are better for finding folktales than specific mythological concepts.
For your specific research question I would advise you to pick a culture and if possible a time period to look into. It will be easier to find niche information if you are searching for something specific, rather than something general.
As for demons being sealed in jars, the concept of an malevolent spirit (as in supernatural entity, not ghost) being trapped in a bottle, jar or other container, is a tolerably widespread motif in folklore. In fact "The Spirit in the Bottle" has it's own tale type: ATU 331. It shows up in Europe from the Middle Ages onward, but while Stith Thompson (the T in ATU) was still uncertain whether it was originally European or Middle Eastern, Hans-Jörg Uther (the U in ATU) considers it to be of Jewish and Arabic origin.
Today the most well-known versions are probably these two:
The Fisherman and the Jinni, one of the stories in One Thousand and One Nights that was already present in its earliest known Arabic versions, from the 14th century. In it a fisherman catches a copper jar, sealed with lead that has the Seal of Solomon/Suleiman pressed into it. He opens it and an ifrit (powerful, malevolent jinn) emerges, who was imprisoned by Solomon. The jinn threatens to kill him, is tricked into going back into the jar, then released in return for pledging to help the fisherman.
The Spirit in the Glass Bottle, collected by the Grimms in Bökendorf, Germany, published in 1815. Here a malevolent spirit called Mercurius is trapped in a glass bottle stuck between the roots of a tree. He is freed by the kind protagonist, tricked into going back into the bottle after threatening to kill him, then freed again in return for a magical gift. How the bottle is able to contain the powerful spirit is not explained. (I grew up with a version of this story where the spirit is not released a second time.)
There are variants on the bottle/jar however, for example:
Virgilius the Sorcerer, a legend-like tale published in The Violet Fairy Book (1901) by Andrew Lang. Presumably written by him (or his wife), inspired by Medieval legends. Here the evil spirit is trapped in a small hole in the floor of a cave closed off with a bolt.
The legend of Paracelsus, a German tale published in English in 1892 in Folk-lore and Legends Germany. Its editor seems to be Charles John Tibbits, but no translators or sources are named. In this story the spirit has been trapped in a fir tree by a magician, which has a small stopper pushed into its trunk, sealed with three crosses.
(These might remind you of the Arthurian Merlin, sorcerer with demonic heritage, being imprisoned in a tree, cave, or stone by Niviane/Nimue/Viviane, first named in the Lancelot-Grail Cycle from the 13th century.)
Now, I prefer to stay in the realm of folktales rather than religious texts, but I will try to briefly explain the Jewish and Islamic foundations for this tale type - the link between King Solomon and controlling demons/jinn - under the cut:
The Tanakh describes King Solomon as the last to rule both Israel and Judah, son and successor to King David. He is considered a Jewish prophet, granted divine wisdom (I Kings 3:12). In the Talmud Solomon is described to have tricked Ashmedai/Asmodeus, the prince of the demons, into helping him to build the first temple. The text mentions a chain and a ring engraved with a sacred name of God, which are used to bind and then control the demon (Gittin 68a-b). (There is a Greek text of uncertain date and origin called The Testament of Solomon that says the ring has the seal of God on it.)
Solomon is considered an important prophet as well as ruler of the Israelites in the Quran, who is told to have had control over the wind and over many jinn (Quran 34:12, 38:36-37). A prevalent interpretation of the text states that this power is linked to Solomon possessing a ring that was given to him by Allah, and temporarily taken away as punishment (38.34 Jalal - Al-Jalalayn).
If you want a more historical, scholarly take on the folklore motif of imprisoning and controlling demons, take a look at this: Allegra Iafrate, ““Il demone nell’ampolla”: Solomon, Virgil, Aeolus, and the Long Metamorphosis of Rain Rituals and Wind-Taming Practices”, Revue de l’histoire des religions, 3 | 2017, 387-425.
I haven't read it in full, but it looks like it might give you some inspiration!
#demon#demons#evil spirit#spirits#folklore#legends#goldensadnessdolphin#I /know/ there is some folk belief about sealing either good or malevolent spirits into wood by carving three x-crosses into it#but it's very hard to search for because the combination of 'cross' and 'wood' will always turn up christian results

Hi!
I was just cleared by my professor to write a 35 page paper concerning the relationship between Hamilton and Laurens.
I've been following your blog for a while now and truly appreciate the nuance you approach 18th century relationships with homoerotic subtext. I was wondering if there are any sources or articles that you could think of that could possibly help? I'm trying to be as thorough as possible with this project and figured that the good people of tumblr would be a great place to start!
That's so exciting!
I've already shared a bunch of general/context-setting works here, some of which include mentions of the Laurens-Hamilton relationship. You especially want the Godbeer text.
Here are a few other articles that might be worth looking at:
Weir, R. M. (1976). Portrait Of A Hero. American Heritage, 27(3).
Lyons, C. A. (2003). Mapping an Atlantic Sexual Culture: Homoeroticism in Eighteenth-Century Philadelphia. William and Mary Quarterly, 60(1), 119.
Haggerty, G. E. (2012). Gray Agonistes: Thomas Gray and Masculine Friendship. The Age of Johnson, 22, 331–XIII.
Richter, S. (1996). The Ins and Outs of Intimacy: Gender, Epistolary Culture, and the Public Sphere. The German Quarterly, 69(2), 111–124.
And then a few considerations from me (because I've never seen a soapbox I didn't want to climb on):
Context is everything. If you're looking to evaluate the relationship effectively, make sure you are consulting sources that cover the right social, cultural and temporal contexts (in this case, Anglo-American late 18th century). Male-male relationships underwent a lot of change during the 18th century, as did the socially-acceptable (or not) codes and expressions. They also varied a lot by culture, so a source about men in France in the 1720s is only going to be tangentially relevant here.
Be sure to consider adjacent topics like masculinity, virtue, family life, and the influence of antiquity. All of these helped to model what a man should aspire to be, and how he should engage with the other people in his life (and thereby, what would count as transgession).
Don't forget friendship! Whatever else Laurens and Hamilton were, or however else we want to label it, they were also close friends. This sometimes gets erased or overlooked and it's very frustrating. Friendships were the cornerstone relationships of young men's lives at the time - sites of companionship, values-building, intellectual stimulation and social support.
Good luck with your paper!

Suicidal Ideation.
I hate those "I don't know who needs to hear this" style posts, but I suppose this is going to be one of them.
You cannot shame someone out of being suicidal. Saying any of these about suicide/suicidal people:
They're weak
They're cowards
Took the easy way out
They didn't care about their family/friends
It will not help them. It will only make things worse.
I am weak *CUTS*
I am a coward *BLAM*
You're right it's easier to die than go on *EATS PILLS*
If they don't think I care, then I should just go *JUMPS*
If you say or think any of these things about suicide or suicidal people, see yourself out of the damned conversation. They need empathy and a path to hope, not your open mockery and contempt.
If you are having trouble, need support, need to talk. Talk to me. PM me. Send me an anon. I may not get to you right away, but I will do my best. If you can't get me, get someone. Here are some resources, it is a brief list, there are many more resources and options. Use this link to find help.
In the US:
Lifeline: 988
Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741
Love is Respect:(LGBTQ Focused) Call: 866-331-9474
In Canada:

Literally what the title says🧍🏾♀️
Riri williams x reader
In which riri tells reader how she feels about her🤭
Word count: 331 ( really short Ik)
HEYYYYYY It’s been months since I have written anything and I’m trying to come back into the community but I hope you enjoy and also if you want to join my taglist the link is on my profile!
-
Riri looked down at her phone as she waited for you to text her back. Her leg bounced up and down with anticipation as she was ready to leave her class, her professor always said even though she felt like she was “ too smart “ for this class she had to go anyway. She asked if you could meet up after class because she had been wanting to confess her feelings about you for the longest, But she always dodged the opportunity to do so feeling like you wouldn’t feel the same way.
She loved everything about you and would be delusional about you to her friends and when it gets to that point with her she gotta have you.
Then suddenly her phone lightly vibrated on the table she quickly picked it up not listening to anything her professor was saying seeing you hearted her message and agreed to meet up with her.
-
You sat at the table of the cafe you were supposed to meet Riri at scrolling through your for you page. Adding some of the TikTok to your favorites that made you giggle.
You then felt a light tap on your shoulder as Riri stood behind you smiling at you and kissing you on the cheek before sitting down. You looked away feeling the butterflies in your stomach and your face heating up from her kissing you feeling like never wanting to wash your cheek again after that.
“ So what did you want to talk about? “ you ask, shifting in your seat and feeling the tension between the two of you. '' well I’m just being straightforward with you ma I like you like I like you like you”.
It felt like the world stopped moving once she said yes you did have a crush on Riri I mean who wouldn’t? ( she is fine asf 🤭).
All you could do was be in shock sitting there without having any words to form on what to say back to her.

Hey maybe sorcery
Trick🙀 or treat🍬
sparkly d4 says treat!
have some of the poetry i've been writing for class. it's collage poetry!
ID under cut
ID: two columns of black Times New Roman text on white background. the left column has the following text:
“The ship wherein Theseus and the youth of Athens returned from Crete had thirty oars, and was preserved by the Athenians down even to the time of Demetrius Phalereus, for they took away the old planks as they decayed, putting in new and stronger timber in their places, in so much that this ship became a standing example among the philosophers, for the logical question of things that grow; one side holding that the ship remained the same, and the other contending that it was not the same.” — Plutarch, Theseus
“The role in which the physical properties of gold impact making ancient jewelry cannot be overemphasized. Think chicken and the egg. You can’t have one without the other. Raw (dead soft), high-karat gold is malleable. The hammering and forging used while shaping the gold compacts the molecules and makes it dense and strong. However, worked past it’s malleability, the gold will flake, crack and eventually break. When making a piece of jewelry, separate components are frequently wrought to the brink of this “work-hardened” state and are then “annealed,” returning the metal to its original plasticity, yet maintaining its pre-annealed form. Finding the sweet spot of flexibility and strength is essential to creating a structurally sound form from supple gold. All techniques must be mastered and successful as each step is the foundation of the next. There’s no room for fudging or the piece falls apart. Pure gold (100% AU) is referred to as 24 karat gold. The term karat is an ancient term for purity and weight based on the Carob bean found in the Middle East. Fun fact, Greece is not naturally rich in gold. The amount of gold jewelry produced in Greece at the time reflects foreign trade and influence. Funny isn’t it, Alexander the Great's conquests after 331 BC passed through all the main gold-supplying regions of the former Persian Empire.” — Katy Beh Jewelry
the right column has a heading in bold that reads "REPURPOSED. or, THE SHIP OF THESEUS", with the following text underneath:
this ship returned old planks decayed new and stronger planks used new planks original form is it the same
forging jewelry worked wrought hardened all the same metal not the original form is it the same
are You the same
after hammering and forging worked to the brink are You the same
gold is malleable are You malleable are You soft
will You grow or will You break
are You dead or are You stronger
are You preserved standing strong or not the same maintaining physical form yet the foundation falls apart
the same components hardened wrought
the same and yet not the same foreign
are You You
to reflect the collage nature, every instance of You is capitalised since it is also capitalised in the original paragraph. for the same reason, the poem has forward slashes between all the 'pieces'; only words which were already grouped in the original paragraphs have no slashes, but the slashes have been removed from the ID for ease of screenreader access. /end ID
