[クラフトビールの細道] 33 Acres Brewing Company
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
建物のファザードは真っ白。夏のこの時期にはパティオも出している。真鍮であしらったストリートナンバープレートがかっこいい。
Tumblr media
隣には33 Brewing Experimentと名のつく建物もある。ここは半分以上の裏スペースが酒造場になってて、中にも飲む場所がある。
Tumblr media Tumblr media
33Acresの中のスペース、テーブルはこんな感じになってて、缶や瓶だけを買っていくテイクアウトの人は外で会計してTo Goできるようになってた。
オーソドックスなB33Rのラインナップ
Ⅰ. 33 ACRES OF LIFE - CALIFORNIA COMMON
エールがしっかり効きながらもパキッとした残り味。
Ⅱ. 33 ACRES OF OCEAN - WEST COAST PALE ALE
IPAに近いながらも度数、エールが深すぎないため夏でも飲みやすい。アロマな香りが爽快感を生み出す後味。
Tumblr media
Ⅲ. 33 ACRES OF SUNSHINE - FRENCH BLANCHÈ
シルクのようになめらかな喉越し、オレンジピールによる若干のフルーティな味わい。まさに夏の1日を締めくくる”黄金”。
Tumblr media
Ⅳ. 33 ACRES OF NIRVANA - INDIA PALE ALE
純粋にアルコール度数が高く、他と比べてビターな味わいがガツンとくる重めなIPA。大人の深みが味わえる一本。
Ⅴ. 33 ACRES OF EUPHORIA - BELGIAN TRIPEL

Featuring over 50 beers, available for a limited time, the BC Ale Trail invites you to support breweries in British Columbia.
Press Release
Tumblr media
image Copyright © Townsite Brewery 2021 All rights reserved.
… Vancouver, BC: As the nights get colder and darker, so too do the unique and boutique beers produced by craft brew crews throughout BC that conjure up unmistakably festive flavours. This winter, beer lovers can sip more than 50 seasonally inspired suds available at breweries along the BC Ale Trail that are heating up the holiday season in style.
From sours incorporating a bounty of BC fruit to barrel-aged and bottle-conditioned beers, along with inspired recipes that bring forth notes of cocoa, orange and mint, there’s no shortage of limited-edition, get-’em-before-they’re-gone seasonal beers to choose from.
The usual suspects like stouts, dunkels and porters are well represented, but with festive twists, like the Angry Elf Peppermint Holiday Stout from Port Alberni’s Dog Mountain Brewing, and the Chocomint Mocha Porter from the Noble Pig Brewhouse in Kamloops. There are some think-outside-the-gift-box beers — like the BC Cranberry Sour from 33 Acres in Vancouver’s Brewery Creek — as well as returning festive favourites like the latest entry in the ‘Anno’ series from Burnaby’s Dageraad Brewing, and the 2021 edition of the now-annual Winter Ale from Kelowna Brewing Company.
So bundle up, grab your crew, and cozy up to some great winter beers while supporting local. And don’t forget to download the BC Ale Trail App to find and collect points for rewards at participating breweries, taphouses, pubs and liquor stores that await at BC Ale Trail’s 200+ locations.
Be sure to check out the blog for the full list of holiday-inspired beers from BC craft breweries, or get in the festive spirit by sampling a selection of 11 different beers from 10 craft breweries below for starters!
Get Sweet on This Sour: BC Cranberry Sour by 33 Acres Brewing Company (5.7% ABV)
A smash hit from 2020, this cran-tastic sour will be back for another seasonal visit with bottles available to go in 33 Acres’ tasting room starting December 17. Brewed with barley, wheat and spelt and fermented with a special mixed culture in an oak foeder, this beer was refermented on BC cranberries to add delicate berry character and complex acidity.
33 Acres Brewing can be found on the Vancouver-Brewery Creek Ale Trail.
Enjoy the Fruits of Their Labour: Fruition 4th Anniversary Ale by Angry Hen Brewing (7.5% ABV | 15 IBU)
Kaslo staple Angry Hen Brewing is celebrating its fourth year in business and saluting loyal fans and new customers with a traditional gift of fruit. Angry Hen’s brew crew added locally picked raspberries, yellow and purple plums and fox grapes and sea salt to the Gose base from their 200th beer and conditioned it for four months to bring this ale to its true Fruition.
Angry Hen Brewing can be found on the Kootenay Rockies West Ale Trail.
Slip Into Some Comfy PJs: Flannel Pyjamas by Camp Beer Co. (10% ABV)
Get out of the cold and slip into some comfy flannel pjs via this Wee Heavy Scotch Ale aged in bourbon barrels for 11 months. This winter warm-you-up is strong, dark and malty with plenty of complex flavours for the discerning palate and has notes of toffee, caramel and smoke — just like a good Camp fire should.
Camp Beer Co. can be found on the Fraser Valley Ale Trail.
The Winter of Our Content: Anno 2021 by Dageraad Brewing (8.5% ABV)
It’s that magical time of year for Dageraad Brewing disciples: the Burnaby destination has released its Anno 2021. It’s a strong golden ale brewed with Okanagan pears and Indian coriander and bottle-conditioned with Brett claussenii (a strain of wild yeast that’s funky, fruity and adds complexity over time). For dyed-in-the-wool Anno acolytes, Dageraad is also selling Vintage Gift Packs featuring one bottle each of the Anno entries from 2018 through 2021 plus two limited-edition holiday glasses.
Dageraad Brewing can be found on the North of the Fraser Ale Trail.
A Buddy-the-Elf Approved Beer: Angry Elf Cocoa Peppermint Holiday Stout by Dog Mountain Brewing (6.5% ABV)
This one’s like Will Ferrell in a barrel — well, his character from the beloved holiday film Elf, anyway. As a special gift for their fans, the pack at Port Alberni’s Dog Mountain concocted this dark and delicious beer using cocoa, vanilla and candy canes to fill stockings of thirsty folks with a refreshingly unique beer that tastes like a peppermint hot chocolate for adults.
Dog Mountain Brewing can be found on the Vancouver Island Part Two Ale Trail.
Paint it ’Black: Black Mammoth Winter Ale by Fernie Brewing Co. (8% ABV | 25 IBU)
Rich, strong and decadent, this black ale is complemented by the additions of chocolate malt, dark organic cocoa and peels from Curaçao oranges and aged on oak for smoothness and complexity. It’s a big and boozy beer that brings forth rich notes of orange and cocoa and pairs perfectly with dark skies, cold nights and freshly fallen snow.
Fernie Brewing Co. can be found on the Kootenay Rockies East Ale Trail.
Sweet Sassy Molassy: 2021 Winter Ale by Kelowna Brewing Co. (7.5% ABV | 33 IBU)
It’s become an annual tradition for Kelowna Brewing fans — a beer perfect for cracking open in front of the fire after a long day on the slopes. Heavy on the malt bill and generous on the molasses in the boil, this brew has a balanced sweetness with notes of treacle and coffee. The Kelowna brew crew also offers personalized cans as a delicious alternative to traditional holiday greeting cards.
Kelowna Brewing Co. can be found on the Kelowna and West Kelowna Ale Trail.
Bob’s Your Dunkel: Candy Cane Dunkel by the Moon Under Water Brew Pub & Distillery (5.4% ABV)
This dark lager was brewed using a single-decoction process that gives it an intense malt flavour without leaving too much residual sugar and giving it a dry, refreshing finish. Candy canes and vanilla were used in the brewing process to give it some added hints of the holiday season.
The Moon Under Water Brew Pub & Distillery can be found on the Victoria Ale Trail.
Mull Over These Two Holiday Infusions from the Noble Pig Brewhouse:
Chocomint Mocha Porter (5.5% ABV | 22 IBU)
A festive spin on the Kamloops’ brew crew’s flagship Stone House Mocha Porter, this Chocomint Mocha Porter is brewed with pure cacao and peppermint for a delightfully delicious winter shiver in every sip.
Mulled Swine Belgian Pepper Ale (5% ABV | 20 IBU)
This ’Swine is mighty fine — a take on the Noble Pig’s beloved Stick House Belgian Pepper Ale, the Mulled Swine is infused with holiday heavy spices and a deliciously mulled flavour guaranteed to get even Grinches into the festive spirit.
The Noble Pig Brewhouse can be found on the Kamloops, Shuswap, Vernon & Merritt Ale Trail.
Twist and Stout: Century Grove Chocolate Orange Stout by Townsite Brewing Inc. (6% ABV | 28 IBU)
Smash that orange — this dessert stout from the popular Powell River destination wraps beer lovers in a warm, comfy and cozy brew blanket. It gives off hints of chocolate and blood orange used in the brewing process and evokes memories of the favourite stocking stuffer from Terry’s Chocolate Co.
Townsite Brewing Inc. can be found on the Sunshine Coast Ale Trail.

Top 10 Dog-Friendliest Cities
If you’re a dog lover looking to move to the big city, pet-friendliness is a probably a big part of what you want in a new town. Even if you find a landlord who allows dogs, you’ll need to find things to do with your pup in your city. Dog parks, walking trails, events, and dog beaches all make for fun outings with your pooch. The cities on this list have plenty of ways for people and pets to play together. Here are the 10 dog-friendliest cities in the United States of America.
1. Portland, Oregon
Tumblr media
Portland has 33 dog parks, more dog parks per capita than any big city in the country. It even has it’s own social network for dog lovers! It’s also home to the Lucky Labrador Brewing Company where you can have a beer and hang out with your pup at the same time. Speaking of grabbing a drink with your dog, Portland is one of the few cities outside of France where you can take your dog into a pub. There are also plenty of meetups like the Pug Crawl and Pit Bull Parade for like-minded fans of specific breeds to gather and celebrate.
2. Seattle, Washington
Tumblr media
If your dog doesn’t like the rain, maybe Seattle isn’t the town for you. But if you don’t mind the wet climate, you’ll be in good company as there are more dogs in Seattle than children. There’s even an indoor dog park if you don’t want to pack the umbrella and rain boots, and you can get there nice and dry as dogs are allowed on city bus lines, light rail, ferries, and even seaplanes. There are over 32 meetup groups for dog lovers, and plenty of dog-friendly businesses for you to visit with your pup.
3. San Francisco, California
Tumblr media
San Francisco has the lowest average pet deposit for dog owners looking to rent. Pups are allowed on trolleys, in several restaurants, and a few gyms if you want your pooch to spot you while you work out. San Fran is also home to DogFest, an annual festival that celebrates dogs and raises money for a local elementary school. There are also more than 50 different dog meetup groups, so get social.
4. Austin, Texas
Tumblr media
If you love pictures of your dog, Austin may be the place for you, as it’s home to 35 pet photographers. Bow-Wow Bones is a local food truck that serves up plenty of natural treats for pups out on a walk. Most restaurants welcome dogs to join diners on the patio, and the temperate climate is perfect for eating outside. If your pup is looking to cool off, you can stop by Red Bud Isle, which is a swimming spot for dogs only. Or you can find your inner peace with Austin Doga, a yoga class you can take with your dog.
5. Chicago, Illinois
Tumblr media
As this is my home town, I may be a bit biased. But Chicago is very dog-friendly, down to the local restaurants and bars that leave big bowls of ice water out on hot days so pups on walks can stop and hydrate. Chicago’s Montrose Dog Beach is a great place for pups to play in the waters of Lake Michigan, and the Chicago White Sox baseball team holds a Dog Day every year for dogs to join their owners for the great American pastime. There are tons of scenic walking paths along the lake and through Chicago’s neighborhoods, including The 606, a new elevated path just for walkers and bikers.
6. Colorado Springs, Colorado
Tumblr media
Nature may seem like a distant fantasy to city-dwellers, but not for dogs and humans who live in Colorado Springs. Not only are there plenty of dog parks, there are places like the Crags Trail through Pike National Forest, or Seven Falls, a canyon filled with beautiful waterfalls. Or you can hike through Garden of the Gods Park, a Registered National Landmark, and one that I’ve visited personally. It’s absolutely incredible and should be on your list of places to visit with your dog before you die.
7. Boston, Massachusetts
Tumblr media
Boston is a fun town for pups and owners, as many local bars offer “Yappy Hours” where patrons can bring their dogs along while they grab a pint. Dogs are also allowed to ride the first subway built in America during off-peak hours, as well as dog-friendly cruises of Boston Harbor, so it’s a perfect place for pups on the go. There are plenty of dog-friendly neighborhoods and apartments, too, so you can rest assured that your neighbors probably share your affinity for canines.
8. San Diego, California
Tumblr media
San Diego may be the only city on this list where you can take your dog surfing. In fact, it’s home to the annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon. Restaurants have patios where pups can join owners. There are plenty of dog parks and dog boutiques for fashionable west coast dogs who want to strut their stuff on the boardwalk. Not to mention all the dog themed events, like Paw-micon--the canine answer to San Diego’s Comic-Con–where pups can engage in “paws-play” rather than “cosplay”.
9. Tucson, Arizona
Tumblr media
With sunshine 350 days of the year, Tuscson is a great place if you’re the opposite of a Seattle person. For dry-weather-loving breeds, it’s a paradise. Local parks and trails provide scenic desert views to enjoy with your best friend. And Tucson is home to Pitbulooza, a festival celebrating Pit Bulls for National Pit Bull Awareness Day. No need to worry about breed specific legislation here!
10. Albuquerque, New Mexico
Tumblr media
Also on the dry side, though not quite as dry as Tucson, Albuquerque has 33,000 acres of public parks. To put that in perspective, that’s a quarter acre for each dog, cat, and bird in the city. And since it only rains about 60 days out of the year, there’s plenty of time to enjoy the outdoors. You can walk along the Rio Grande, or take a hike in the Sandia foothills. There are plenty of dog parks available, but you might not even need to go to one considering how many dog-friendly places there are to go with your pup.

The History of coffee in India
Indians experience a strong cup of tea. It's been enjoyed by means of nearly all indian generations through the years. However, as you're conscious, india is a land of paradoxes. As a count of truth, it's miles the sector’s 6th largest manufacturer and fifth largest exporter of coffee, 30% of that's fed on locally. Now the query is, “how did this tea-ingesting country emerge as so engaged in espresso?” nicely, the solution lies in a legend! The first point out of espresso is from yemen inside the arabian peninsula within the fifteenth century. For a long time, espresso was so valuable that nobody was accepted to carry its seeds out of doors of the arabian peninsula. In the 16th century, it took a wandering sufi saint to exchange the whole lot. Baba budan of chikmaglur is said to have brought seven uncooked seeds from the yemen hidden in his beard as it was unlawful to carry raw seeds on the time. He planted the seeds at the slopes of the chandragiri hills, where he lived, and for this reason coffee production in india started out. Coffee is still grown in these hills these days, and the area is referred to as baba budangiri. Takeover of joe with the aid of 1670, there have been thriving brew farms in southern india, thanks to the increase of the plant life at the beginning sown by using baba budan. The dutch (who occupied lots of india in the course of the seventeenth century) aided in the spread of brew cultivation across the united states of america, however it wasn’t until the arrival of the british raj inside the mid-19th century that business coffee farming flourished. The dutch have been the first to cultivate those plants on a massive industrial scale. Not to be outdone through the dutch, the british organised a huge drive to set up arabica brew plantations at some point of south india. One day, while operating for parry and co., an formidable british supervisor exercised his entrepreneurial spirit and petitioned the mysore authorities for 40 acres of land to set up india’s first coffee farm. Arabica to robusta first of all, arabica became the maximum not unusual form of brew grown in india. But, inside the mid-1870s, a decline in espresso popularity resulted in many farms going out of enterprise or being changed by means of farms of the famend drink—tea. The marketplace’s surviving gamers suffered losses because of huge infestations of coffee leaf rust but sooner or later switched to robusta, and the brew market survived those tough times. Hardships to restoration following india’s independence from the british, the following bankruptcy in the complicated boom of indian brew commenced. The coffee board of india took drastic measures and banned imports to defend nearby growers and save you exploitation by way of foreign organizations. In addition they prohibited 0. 33-celebration income and pooled the brew, removing incentives for farmers to provide tremendous espresso. With the rest of these regulations in the 1990s, india opened its market to the rest of the arena. With growers unfastened to sell to whomever they desired, the coffee board of india eagerly assisted neighborhood farmers and growers in bringing their joe to the sector. These days, india’s brew enterprise is carving out a brand new area of interest marketplace for itself, with indian coffee accounting for kind of one-fifth of all italian brew imports. So, the subsequent time you journey, make a point of travelling the farms in south india and sipping on a few filter coffee because it reminds you of the rich records in the back of its flavour.

Bringing together two traditions: a New Year’s Party and a Cask Festival in one
Have you ever attended a Central City Brewing Cask Festival? They happen twice a year, Winter and Summer. Any beer enthusiast in the BC Lower Mainland should put those events on their calendar. But while you wait for the next CCB fest, there’s a way to get your cask fix plus attend a New Year’s dance as well.
A Little History
BC Lower Mainland cask beer festivals were popularized over a dozen years ago at Dix BBQ & Brewery (now Central City’s Beatty Street location, but that’s jumping ahead). Eventually the Dix Caskivals died along with the brewery itself.
Casks at Central City Surrey
The first brewery to step up and create a series matching the quality of those Caskivals was Central City, whose Surrey location (their only location at the time) started hosting top-notch cask events in 2008. Over the years, countless great memories have been made at Central City’s extravaganzas. The Surrey brewpub’s expansive but channeled layout made for a wide distribution of the many casks available, causing much mingling, socializing and discussion of beer. See photos below of what to expect at a Central City event.
New Year’s Cheer
The Surrey brewpub has hosted many New Year’s Eve parties over the years. But this year’s event, held Monday December 31st, is special because it’s merging two great traditions: a CCB New Year’s Eve dance and a cask fest!
The Surrey brewpub steps away from a Skytrain station. This stunning glass-enclosed facility is where the Central City empire was born, and it’s a great location you should experience if you haven’t before.
The Brew Year’s Eve Cask Ball features live music, 15 casks, finger food, whisky bar, champagne, prizes and giveaways. Tickets are available at Eventbrite here.

33 Acres of Euphoria Belgian Tripel
Find this now in our tasting room, serving in 12oz glasses to stay only and growlers to go.
We say many things, which may become, through the odd powers of threes. So, when these magickal concoctions joyfully adorn tables, an even three incites intriguing company. Fruity lemon rind finishes bolster what is pound for pound our most chancing, yet very drinkable, Belgian.
Eyes wide enclosing, the potency of this feverish blending remains a secret until feeling the creamy golden rushes readied inside 33 acres of Euphoria. Bursting with exhilarating flavours and hefty doses of celebration, we strongly encourage sharing amongst lovers, between friends, and the best of kin.

COVID-19 vaccine boosters could mean billions for drugmakers (AP) Billions more in profits are at stake for some vaccine makers as the U.S. moves toward dispensing COVID-19 booster shots to shore up Americans’ protection against the virus. How much the manufacturers stand to gain depends on how big the rollout proves to be. No one knows yet how many people will get the extra shots. But Morningstar analyst Karen Andersen expects boosters alone to bring in about $26 billion in global sales next year for Pfizer and BioNTech and around $14 billion for Moderna if they are endorsed for nearly all Americans.
So close! Iceland almost gets female-majority parliament (AP) Iceland briefly celebrated electing a female-majority parliament Sunday, before a recount produced a result just short of that landmark for gender parity in the North Atlantic island nation. The initial vote count had female candidates winning 33 seats in Iceland’s 63-seat parliament, the Althing. Hours later, a recount in western Iceland changed the outcome, leaving female candidates with 30 seats. Still, at almost 48% of the total, that is the highest percentage for women lawmakers in Europe. Only a handful of countries, none of them in Europe, have a majority of female lawmakers. According to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Rwanda leads the world with women making up 61% of its Chamber of Deputies, with Cuba, Nicaragua and Mexico narrowly over the 50% mark. Worldwide, the organization says just over a quarter of legislators are women.
Copenhagen’s hippie, psychedelic oasis Christiania turns 50 (AP) After a half-century, the “flower-power” aura of Copenhagen’s semi-autonomous Christiania neighborhood hasn’t yet wilted. “It has become more and more an established part of Copenhagen,” said Ole Lykke, a resident of 42 years at the enclave near downtown Copenhagen. “The philosophy of community and common property still exists. Out here we do things in common.” It all started as a stunt 50 years ago, when a small counterculture newspaper that needed an outrageous story for its front page staged an “invasion” of an abandoned 18-century naval base. Six friends with air rifles and a picnic basket entered the former military facility base, proclaimed it a “free state” on Sept. 26, 1971, took some photos and went home. The paper ran the story, urging young people to take the city bus and squat the barracks. Hippies flocked to what they dubbed Christiania—no one remembers why they picked that name—that evolved into a counterculture, freewheeling oasis with psychedelic-colored buildings, free marijuana, limited government influence, no cars and no police. In 1973, it was recognized as a “social experiment.” After more than four decades of locking horns with authorities, Christiania’s future was secured in 2012 when the state sold the 84-acre (24-hectare) enclave for 85.4 million kroner ($13.5 million) to a foundation owned by its inhabitants. The residents—nearly 700 adults and about 150 children—now rent their homes from the foundation and are financially responsible for all repair and maintenance work to the roughly 240 buildings.
UK gas stations run dry as trucker shortage sparks hoarding (AP) Thousands of British gas stations ran dry Sunday, an industry group said, as motorists scrambled to fill up amid a supply disruption due to a shortage of truck drivers. The Petrol Retailers Association, which represents almost 5,500 independent outlets, said about two-thirds of its members were reporting that they had sold out their fuel, with the rest “partly dry and running out soon.” Association chairman Brian Madderson said the shortages were the result of “panic buying, pure and simple.” “There is plenty of fuel in this country, but it is in the wrong place for the motorists,” he told the BBC. “It is still in the terminals and the refineries.” Long lines of vehicles formed at many gas stations over the weekend, and tempers frayed as some drivers waited for hours.
U.K.’s Migrant Boat Dispute Has Eyes Fixed on the Channel (NYT) Using high-powered binoculars and a telescope, three volunteers from a humanitarian monitoring group stood on the Kent coast, peering across the English Channel. The looming clock tower of the French town of Calais was visible on this clear morning, but so was the distinctive outline of a small rubber dinghy. The volunteer group, Channel Rescue, was set up last year to watch for the boats packed with asylum seekers trying to cross this busy waterway, to offer them humanitarian support—like water and foil blankets—when they land on beaches, or to spot those in distress. But they are also monitoring Britain’s border authority for any possible rights violations as the government takes an increasingly hard line on migration. For much of the year, the numbers of migrants crossing the channel in dinghies has risen, brewing a political storm in London and leading Home Secretary Priti Patel to authorize tough tactics to push boats back toward France. The authorization—not yet put into effect—has stirred anew the national debate over immigration and created a further diplomatic spat between Britain and France, whose relations were already strained after Brexit over issues including both fishing rights and global strategic interests.
German elections (AP) Germany is embarking on a potentially lengthy search for its next government after the center-left Social Democrats narrowly beat outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel’s center-right bloc in an election that failed to set a clear direction for Europe’s biggest economy under a new leader. Leaders of the parties in the newly elected parliament were meeting Monday to digest a result that saw Merkel’s Union bloc slump to its worst-ever result in a national election, and appeared to put the keys to power in the hands of two opposition parties. Both Social Democrat Olaf Scholz, who pulled his party out of a years-long slump, and Armin Laschet, the candidate of Merkel’s party who saw his party’s fortunes decline in a troubled campaign, laid a claim to leading the next government. Scholz is the outgoing vice chancellor and finance minister and Laschet is the governor of Germany’s most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia. Whichever of them becomes chancellor will do so with his party having won a smaller share of the vote than any of his predecessors.
Basta! Romans say enough to invasion of wild boars in city (AP) Rome has been invaded by Gauls, Visigoths and vandals over the centuries, but the Eternal City is now grappling with a rampaging force of an entirely different sort: rubbish-seeking wild boars. Entire families of wild boars have become a daily sight in Rome, as groups of 10-30 beasts young and old emerge from the vast parks surrounding the city to trot down traffic-clogged streets in search of food in Rome’s notoriously overflowing rubbish bins. Posting wild boar videos on social media has become something of a sport as exasperated Romans capture the scavengers marching past their stores, strollers or playgrounds. Italy’s main agriculture lobby, Coldiretti, estimates there are over 2 million wild boars in Italy. The region of Lazio surrounding Rome estimates there are 5,000-6,000 of them in city parks, a few hundred of which regularly abandon the trees and green for urban asphalt and trash bins. In Italy’s rural areas, hunting wild boar is a popular sport and most Italians can offer a long list of their favorite wild boar dishes. Those beliefs are not shared by some urban residents.
Taiwan says China is a ‘bully’ after one of the largest PLA warplane incursions yet (CNN) Taiwan on Thursday accused China of “bullying” after Beijing sent a total of 24 warplanes into its air defense identification zone (ADIZ), the third-largest incursion in the past two years of heightened tensions between Beijing and Taipei. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft, including bombers, fighter jets, anti-submarine planes and airborne early warning and control planes, entered Taiwan’s ADIZ in two groups—one of 19 planes and a second cohort of five jets that came later in the day. The air incursions came a day after Taiwan officially submitted an application to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) free-trade pact. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs signaled its strong opposition to Taiwan’s application. “We firmly oppose official exchanges between any country and the Taiwan region, and firmly oppose Taiwan’s accession to any agreement or organization of an official nature,” ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said.
Taliban hang body in public; signal return to past tactics (AP) The Taliban hanged a dead body from a crane parked in a city square in Afghanistan on Saturday in a gruesome display that signaled the hard-line movement’s return to some of its brutal tactics of the past. Taliban officials initially brought four bodies to the central square in the western city of Herat, then moved three of them to other parts of the city for public display, said Wazir Ahmad Seddiqi, who runs a pharmacy on the edge of the square. Taliban officials announced that the four were caught taking part in a kidnapping earlier Saturday and were killed by police, Seddiqi said. Since the Taliban overran Kabul on Aug. 15 and seized control of the country, Afghans and the world have been watching to see whether they will re-create their harsh rule of the late 1990s, which included public stonings and limb amputations of alleged criminals, some of which took place in front of large crowds at a stadium.
UN and Afghanistan’s Taliban, figuring out how to interact (AP) It’s been little more than a month since Kalashnikov-toting Taliban fighters in their signature heavy beards, hightop sneakers and shalwar kameezes descended on the Afghan capital and cemented their takeover. Now they’re vying for a seat in the club of nations and seeking what no country has given them as they attempt to govern for a second time: international recognition of their rule. The Taliban wrote to the United Nations requesting to address the U.N. General Assembly meeting of leaders that is underway in New York. They argue they have all the requirements needed for recognition of a government. The U.N. has effectively responded to the Taliban’s request by signaling: Not so fast. Afghanistan, which joined the U.N. in 1946 as an early member state, is scheduled to speak last at the General Assembly leaders’ session on Monday. With no meeting yet held by the U.N. committee that decides challenges to credentials, it appears almost certain that Afghanistan’s current ambassador will give the address this year—or that no one will at all. The U.N. can withhold or bestow formal acknowledgement on the Taliban, and use this as crucial leverage to exact assurances on human rights, girls’ access to education and political concessions.
