The Red Devil Stirs The Boiling Pot: A Red Apple Turns Man Wicked

Autumn is in full swing as I write this. The fresh apples of September have become the yellow and red leaves of October. Soon they will become the woolen blanket of leaves on the cold earth in November.

My devil has shifted as the seasons have. From the Boogey man came the Foul One. The red devil of the west.

The devil wasnt always red. He was traditionally green, black, or blue in Europe. It wasn't until the protestant reformation that he became popularly known as red in the United States and soon the world over. The red devil was commonly depicted as a silly little thing who was quite imp like. He was said to stir the pot metaphorically and physically. As if the souls of the damned were boiling in his cauldron of torture. It was his job to take his staff (wand?) and stir, whip, beat, and prod condemned souls. Just as one stirs, whips, beats, and prods in the kitchen.

His imagery is toted in the west during the fall and he remains somewhat a god of Halloween, the dead, hell on earth, and wicked celebrations of the veil thinning. He is the apple bobber, the bonfire, the hard cider, and the fornication of lovers in this romantic and chilly time. He is the suffering we endure when white girls tout their pumpkin spice lattes. He is the cause of the season. The Great Pumpkin if you will. He is the flame of hell made man and stored within the jack-o-lantern. He is the commander of demons and unruly spirits. He is the butchered face of a gutted pumpkin. His seed is toasted and eaten warm with spices of cinnamon and nutmeg. He beckons the witch to bake poisoned apple cobbler or pumpkin pie filled with urine. He is the altering of foods for blessing or bane. The great chef, the burning man, the roasted imp. The season is fully his as are all who celebrate it. Halloween is truly a demonic holiday.

Just a context to my non-Brazilian folks. This Morgana, the witch. She was one among many iconic characters from Castelo Ra-Tim-Bum - a very popular children's TV show from the 90s. Many kids grew up watching the show and I guess till this day, it still adored by the new generation of children. She was always with Adelaide, her faithful and very smart owl. Although Morgana's costume was dark, colorful and mostly purple, I was feeling red a lot more better, so the dress she's wearing in my piece, is my adaptation.

Angstober 31: Won't Forget

And to round another month of flash fiction off, a tiny Halloween-appropriate drabble. Whew!

“Memory spells are tricky and fickle  things,” the witch explains. “I can erase this man from your mind, for sure. The time you spent together, and how he loved you, and how he hurt you. Your heart, though... The heart won’t forget. It will be as broken as ever, full of feelings you can’t explain. All the dreams with their razor-sharp edges. Are you sure you want this?”

She hopes her customer hesitates.

They say, “Do it.”

I will see them here again, the witch thinks, and wonders fleetingly why the notion squeezes around her own heart like a manacle.

Baneful Magic in Christian Witchcraft

There’s a LOT of Christian witches on spheres that aren’t tumblr (on here we’re sort of few!), namely reddit. And one misconception I keep seeing is that Christian witches don’t and can’t practice baneful magic.

For the record, I don’t, and if you’re a Christian witch (or any baby witch, really), I’d highly contemplate if cursing and hexing is a practice you really want to get into.

Why do people say you can’t practice baneful magic as a Christian witch? Couple of sources:

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” – Mark 12:30-31

You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD. – Leviticus 19:18

A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.” – John 13:34

That’s some super compelling scripture, huh?

Here’s some evidence to the contrary:

If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. - Galatians 1:9

May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever. Pour out your wrath on them; let your fierce anger overtake them. - Psalm 69:23-24

Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand. When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin. Let his days be few; and let another take his office. Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. - Psalm 109:6-9

The psalms are some of the most well recorded, oldest, pieces of magic text of all time. Literal curses are written into the Bible.

If you believe in biblical inerrancy, curses are woven into our sacred text, from the metaphorical mouth of God.

For the record, I don’t believe in biblical inerrancy, and I don’t practice baneful magic. But to blanket that statement and say that all Christian witches do not practice baneful magic is false. Christian witches have likely been weaving curses out of the psalms for centuries.

“Mother of the Forest – The Celtic Tree Calendar (Ref), The Beginning of Winter”

Blackthorn forms vigorous young trees from the roots, from which dense, thorny bushes grow in dense clumps. Armed with sharp thorns, which can damage human skin. It already starts flowering in early spring, at the beginning of March, and with the onset of winter it produces black berries, commonly known as 'sloes'.

Samhain is the most important festival in the Celtic world, celebrated on 1st November to mark the beginning of winter and therefore the new year. The name 'Samhain' means 'end of summer'. The seasons change from summer to winter (the time of the dead) with this festival. It is a period of short days and darkness, but it is a necessary period for nature to enter a peaceful rest and welcome the bright spring. In the calendar of agricultural societies, this is an important stage for the germination of crop seeds.

Samhain was the solemn festival, when fires were lit and sacrifices were offered to gods such as Taranis and Teutates. Importantly, it was believed that on the eve of this day, 31 October, a passage between this world and the spirit world was opened, allowing inhabitants from the other world to come and visit this world freely and interact with humans in this world. However, while the comings and goings were sometimes favourable, it was also envisaged to be dangerous.

On the Samhain eve, children went from house to house to collect festive offerings. It was also customary to celebrate Samhain by placing a brightly burning candle inside a hollowed-out turnip at the entrance to the house.

Blackthorn is a tree traditionally used for black magic and witchcraft, and its thorns remind us of our own insidious roots. We must remember that we hurt ourselves and others in many ways. If we think about how to avoid hurting each other and courageously face our own insidious roots, blackthorn can guide us to overcome this dark side of our human nature and help us to return the debts of our hearts.

It also helps us to accept the fact that death is something from which no one can escape.

リンボクは根の部分から活力のある若木を形成し、ここから棘だらけ��茂みがびっしりと密生する。鋭い棘で武装したリンボクは密生した藪をつくり、人間の肌を傷つける。３月初旬、早春にもう花をつけ始め、冬の訪れと共に、通称「スロー」という黒っぽい実がなる。

サウィンとは、ケルト世界で最も重要なお祭りで、11月1日に冬の始まり、つまり新年の始まりを祝う。「サウィン」とは「夏の終わり」を意味する。この祭りを境に季節は夏から冬（死者の時期）に変わる。日が短く暗い時期だが、自然が穏やかな休息に入り、明るい春を迎えるために必要な期間である。農耕社会の暦では、作物の種が発芽する重要な時期でもある。

サウィンは最も重要な厳粛な祭りで、火が焚かれ、タラニスやテウタテスといった神々に生贄が捧げられた。重要なのは、この日の前夜、10月31日に現世と霊界を結ぶ通路が開かれ、あの世の住人が自由に現世を訪れ、現世の人間と交流できるようになると信じられていたことだ。しかし、その行き来は時に好ましいものであったが、危険なものであることも想定されていた。

サウィンの前夜には、子供たちが家々を回り、お祝い用のお供えを集めた。サウィンを祝って、内部をくり抜いたカブの中に、明るく燃えたろうそくを立て、家の入り口に飾る風習もあった。

リンボクは伝統的に黒魔術や呪術に使われる木であり、その棘は私たち自身の陰湿な心根を思い起こさせる。私たちは、さまざまな形で自分自身や他人を傷つけていることを忘れてはならない。どうすれば互いを傷つけずにすむかを考え、勇気を持って自分自身の陰湿な心根と向き合えば、リンボクは人間が持つこの暗い側面を克服するように導いてくれ、心の負い目を返上するように導いてくれる。

そして、死は誰も逃れることのできないものであるという事実を受け入れる助けにもなってくれる。

Fics are primarily in English, but now we have three exceptions with significant Spanish fics: Karmaland (691 works of 775, from 679 last month) , Tortillaland SMP (108 works of 113, from 106 last month), and QSMP (466 works of 3,833, up from 412 last month). QSMP also includes fics in Brazilian Portugese (175 works, up from 119 last month) and a few in French (19 works, up from 10 month).

In smaller SMPs, both SadSMP and Cogchamp saw a 3-fic decrease, one of the starker fandom decreases that I've seen. In terms of growth, Area Unknown SMP saw a 12-fic increase, Mer SMP saw a 14-fic increase, and New Life SMP saw an impressive 22-fic increase.

In mid-sized fandoms, it was the same three fandoms in a different order than last month. Fable SMP was the standout once again with 33 fics, though Evolution SMP saw a growth of 24 fics and Yandere High School saw 19 new fics.

For the larger fandoms, it was a reduced month from last month. Empires' 154 this month did not beat last month's 244 or the previous month's 218, 3rd Life's 340 this month did not beast last month's 395 or the previous month's 364, and Hermitcraft's 453 did not beat last month's 569 or the previous month's 501. Continuing the trend, Dream SMP's increase of 1,171 did not meet last month's 1,459 or the previous month's 1,376, and in fact the only fandom with a growth compared to July was QSMP, with QSMP's 725 this month not beating last month's 861 but Yes beating the previous month's 628. So the two-month run of increased growth that the bigger fandoms were turning out has definitely come to an end. Possibly the end of summer hit everyone's schedules hard.
