Halloween Days 10 and 11
Sorry, time got away from me yet again. Hoping all (three?) of you forgive me. So today we get two recs.
Tumblr media
Johnny Compton of the Healthy Fears podcast, has long been a writer of brilliantly frightening and wonderfully written short stories.
A spite house is defined as a property built solely to upset neighbors of to flout planning regulations. When Eric Ross - good man in a bad situation - sees an ad for a job at an infamously haunted spite house in Texas offering big money for a short term situation it seems like the new start he and his daughters need. Sadly, he's very, very wrong. Johnny Compton's first novel is a both a frightening entry into the burgeoning genre of Black Southern Gothic and an equally rich family story, perfect for the darkest nights.
Next up we have a YA novel that was not released as a horror novel but is clearly a Gothic that leans hard into the tropes of haunted houses and family curses.
Tumblr media
There are books that are hard to describe in a pithy, grab 'em quick way. Within These Wicked Walls is one of those books. Inspired by Jane Eyre, informed by Ethiopian culture, and possessed of one of the best, most emotionally and intellectually complex YA heroines I have ever read, this is a story of where curses are metaphors for colonialism and unresolved history, love can have a scarred face or taste like chocolate, and parents are not always who or what they appear to be.
If you are interested in being added to my taglist please let me know!

31 Days of Horror Movies (?/31)
I WANT TO DEDICATE WAY TOO MUCH TIME TO HORROR, FUCK YOUR MOVIES, LET'S TALK TV
Okay, I know I said horror movies, but media would have been over-reaching (I'm not talking about video games or books, though do check out the Shining, it's amazing). And I'm not sure if there's any word that encompasses both movie and tv. (Watch, one of you assholes (affectionate) will tell me within 5 mins of me posting this.) But, I'm going to list some tv anyway, because it's my list and you can't stop me.
Inside No. 9: An anthology series in which each episode is a self-contained story and the genres range from drama to comedy to dark comedy to horror to black comedy. ... As with any other anthology that exists, there are going to be episodes you love, episodes you hate, and episodes that fall everywhere in-between. Most of the eps, for me, fall at least into the "like" category which is how it made this list. With only 6 eps per season and 2 specials, with each ep running 30 mins, for a tv show it's not a huge time commitment.
American Horror Story: Asylum: The second season of AHS follows the stories of "patients" and staff at an asylum in 1964. ... I made myself go with only one season of AHS and it was a no brainer that it'd be this one. The writers had really hit their stride with this one but weren't yet bogged down by all that had come before it (which was only one season). The characters are some of the best characters that have ever been written or acted in the series and the stories are some if its tightest. It's worth noting, though, that AHS is infamous for, as I put it, throwing everything including the kitchen sink into a story and this season is no exception.
The Haunting of Hill House: A fractured family confronts haunting memories of their old home and the terrifying events that drove them from it. ... If there's one show that you decide to give a try, this is the show you should watch. Some of the tightest writing I've ever experienced, amazingly acted, absolutely gorgeous character work, and the sixth episode, Two Storms, to this day takes my breath away. Definitely top 5 best tv shows I've ever watched. There is also another series from the same writer, The Haunting of Bly Manor, which is nowhere near as good but as some really amazing moments.
The Last of Us: A man must help a young teen girl get across a fungal-zombie filled United States. ... Man, if you'd told me that there'd be a zombie tv series on this list before I watched this series, I would have raised a very skeptical eyebrow at you. I tend to find zombies somewhat boring, all the survivors are always depressingly horrible to each other, and a tv show is long form which means that these two things are usually drawn out awfully long. But this show does it all right. The writing is amazingly tight, the character and relationships are great, the emotions are there and feel real and meaningful, and my only major complaint is a grudging one because this show is literally so well-written there's no way to change it without ruining the tightness of the script. So, insert "I guess" meme here.

31 Days of Horror Day 16: Theatre
Content warnings: death, descriptions of corpses and decaying
---
The Lasalle name held no prestige even when the family’s grand theater by the city square blazed with lamplight every night. It hung faded over a boarded-up entrance with cracking, peeling letters, and crass graffiti on the right wall facing the street.
The chandeliers still hang from the entrance hall, dripping with cobwebs swaying like wraiths. The mirrors have largely fractured, the gilded paint on their frames cracked and chipped. Beer bottles and cigarette butts litter the old tiles with scuffed flower motifs.
Callista alone remembers the grandeur of the theater. She sits patiently in the audience (although she must admit her patience is wearing as thin as the threadbare seats) pulling the cotton that spills out, the once-rich burgundy chairs now a dull brown. She pays no mind; only, she sighs loudly when a large rat skitters by her feet.
It does a double take when it sees her - rats are such intelligent creatures - but, discerning no harm, it runs away, no doubt back to its partner and many, many rat children.
The audiences found the rats dreadful. The ladies would clutch at the pearls that choked them, fainting when one ran by, and the gentlemen would oh so gallantly (gentlemen always considered themselves gallant, as if it was such a tremendous task, this calming after seeing rats in a crowded city) catch them, holding them stiffly upright. Callista used to peek out from the doors on the side of the amphitheater if the manager wasn’t looking.
She remembers Viola most all, with eyes like spotlights from the back of the theater, trained on Callista.
There are no simpering young ladies and their chivalrous escorts to mind the rats now. What is theatre with no audience?
The orchestra plays silently tonight, as every night. It still brings the hair on the back of her neck to a stiff stand, goose prickles up and down her arms, a quickening heartbeat. Or at least, she remembers these sensations.
The flesh forgets, but perhaps, tonight, it remembers. Perhaps tonight, as with every night before, or so Callista hopes, there is a bit of land outside of town where wild clover dances, and underneath, the bones try to clasp their fingers together, and the descendants of worms from decades ago constrict unknowingly compelled by some small part of a diaphragm their ancestors pushed through.
She pushes her skirts under her legs, leaning stubbornly back into the chair. Presses her lips together as hard as she can. Somewhere, maybe, there’s a fox who lives only because her starving great-great-great-grandmother, through sheer luck, dug up the body of a contralto and, because nature loves irony, tore out her throat. Perhaps that fox makes small, low whimpers as it dreams, the echoes of a song passed down in time.
The stage, empty and dusty, and obscured by shadow, beckons her still. If she snuck into the wings, she would find the floorboards decayed with gaping holes through which a person could fall. The smell of face powder and perfume would be replaced by mildew, and the rustling of skirts and gleeful, sheepish shushing would be nothing but insects and rodents running and fighting in the walls.
If she stood on that stage, no spotlight would save her from the consuming, frigid dark that enveloped the building.
It used to be: no matter how hard she practiced, she could still feel the pounding of her heart in her throat when the audience’s eyes and ears focused in on her hotter than any spotlight.
Callista looks to her left, to her right, behind her, above to the mezzanine. Empty. Empty. Empty. A one-woman audience with no show to watch.
She touches her throat (metaphorically, of course. She hasn’t had a throat or a sense of touch in decades), and turns her attention back to the empty stage.

26) HOUSE/HAUSU
Tumblr media
first up i am sorry i forgot to write this up yesterday! oh no! let's talk two movies again!
there's some of you who are looking at this saying "there's no way she just watched hausu for the first time on the 24th of october, 2023." and to them i say, i also, when watching the movie, was shocked that it was my first time, because it is exactly the type of movie you'd think, and i also thought, i'd have seen many times before
y'all
hausu's a 1977 japanese movie about a group of teenagers who go for summer vacation to a house in the boonies. then, what happens next is, the house eats them.
y'all
this movie is unbelievable. it swings for, and hits, every single note it aims for. it is a perfect example of what it means to Be On Your Bullshit. it is, without a doubt, one of the movies of all time
damn near every death has something so iconic in them that over the last 20 years since 1977, don't correct me it sickens me, cinema has yet to achieve what's done here. there's floating heads biting asses. there's dancing skeletons. there's a gorgeous cannibal witch who mugs at the camera. there's an assault of mattresses.
this is unlike every movie. you know the idea of outsider art? this feels like that. this feels like someone read a bunch of manga, then said "i bet if someone ever invented the way to put this in motion, it'd look like this. i shan't research to see if these motion pictures exist."
it's incredible!
27) HELLRAISER
Tumblr media
i really want to say there's something wrong with modern cinema, in that everyone is beautiful, and nobody is horny, and this movie fights both trends and as a result is the best, but that's not quite it is it? because movies never did horny like hellraiser before. and never have since. the kind of horny this movie does warms my heart
and no, i'm not talking about the kink. the kink is obviously a big part of the movie, but that's not what i'm talking about
and i'm not talking about the queer subtext either, because being queer is not synonymous with being horny, and this subtext isn't what i'm talking about
i'm talking about the dinner party, where steve does a cool cigarette trick, and kirsty has the thirstiest response. i'm talking about her drunken stumble (some of the best drunk acting in all cinema) where you can see she eggs herself on. i'm talking how when kirsty and steve hook up, they don't even share a bed, but there's a level of intimacy that is so fucking wholesome and cute about him sleeping on the floor. wholesome horny
and i'm talking about julia's awkwardness with men, with all men. i'm talking about how she falls for frank, not because he's nice to her, or because he's interestingly mean, but because for once in her life, she's desired by someone. and when she starts bringing other men home, they don't have this burning need to have her, like frank, they're just there, and she's disappointed in them like she is larry; they aren't horny. they're just sad. and she knows horny. needy horny
and hell. i'm talking about the inexplicable bone dragon man eating fistfuls of crickets making direct eye contact with kirsty. he wants those crickets as bad as he wants to be seen as nasty. nasty horny
it's all desire. this movie fuckin' gets desire, y'all. like, it's not just about a horror. it's about desire. and when the horrible things happen, because of how laced with desire the movie is, and because of how phenomenal the effects are when frank is reborn, you too share a desire for the dark and perverse to happen, because at its heart, hellraiser wants you to want. deeply. truly.
it's my favorite movie, i swear. it has such sights to show you
1. skinamarink | 2. smile | 3. the black phone | 4. talk to me | 5. m3gan | 6. significant other | 7. cobweb | 8. horror in the high desert | 9. the pope's exorcist | 10. knock at the cabin | 11. infinity pool | 12. becky | 13. no one will save you | 14. huesera: the bone woman | 15. scream vi | 16. idle hands | 17. a wounded fawn | 18. v/h/s 85 | 19. evil dead rise | 20. mama | 21. look away | 22. some bad shorts and then the oldest view | 23. final destination | 24. beau is afraid | 25. phenomena
