5 Of The Best Australian Muscle Cars Ever Built
While American muscle cars usually command the spotlight in terms of V8 vehicles, Australia also has its fair share of classics. We will delve into five of these classic vehicles which have stood the test of time. All of these vehicles are being shortlisted from a balance of collectability, performance, and general reputation.
1. Holden Monaro
The Holden Monaro is a legendary nameplate in the world of Australian muscle cars. Originally introduced in 1968, the Monaro quickly gained a reputation for its sleek design and formidable performance on the road and the racetrack. With powerful V8 engines under the hood and a timeless coupe silhouette, the Monaro captured the hearts of car enthusiasts across generations. Its iconic status was cemented with the release of modern iterations, including the Monaro VZ and the limited-edition Monaro CV8-Z.
2. Ford Falcon GT
The Ford Falcon GT is possibly the first Australian muscle car, depending on who you ask. The initial XR GT performance version housed a 4.7-liter, 289 ci V8 engine, with 68 and 71 eras having a 5.8-liter, 351 Cleveland V8 producing 300-350hp. The first Aussie-made version was the 1972 XA Falcon which came as a two-door coupe, with a top speed of 142 mph and a 0-60 time of 6.4 seconds. Over the years, the Falcon GT has evolved to become a symbol of Australian performance engineering, with each new generation pushing the boundaries of power and innovation. Models like the Falcon GT-HO Phase III have achieved legendary status among collectors and enthusiasts, Adding to the Falcon GT’s status.
3. Chrysler Valiant Charger
The Chrysler Valiant Charger was based on the Dodge Dart and Plymouth Valiant, but entirely Australian-made. With its long hood, short deck, and aggressive styling cues, the Valiant Charger stood out from the crowd and became a symbol of rebellion and freedom on the open road. Standout versions include the RT model with a 4.3-liter, 265 ci Hemi 6, producing 302 hp, with a 0 to 60 time of 6 seconds. For those wanting more luxury, the Charger 770 SE came with a 5.6-liter, 340-ci V8 and 275hp, Today, well-preserved Charger models are highly sought after by collectors, with the early 70s models being the most desirable.
4. HSV GTSR W1
Developed by Holden Special Vehicles (HSV), the HSV GTSR W1 is a limited-edition super sedan that pays homage to the classic muscle cars of yesteryear while incorporating the latest in automotive technology. With a supercharged V8 engine producing over 600 horsepower, advanced aerodynamics, and track-tuned suspension, the GTSR W1 is capable of tearing up the track with ease. Its aggressive styling and menacing presence make it an instant classic, destined to be remembered as one of the greatest Australian muscle cars.
5. Holden Sandman
American Australia had similar problems in the early 1970s. Huge distances to cover, while needing a vehicle to haul a decent amount of daily items. America solved a problem with the Chevrolet El Camino and the Ford Ranchero, while Australia came up with the ‘Ute.’ A regular muscle car upfront with a van at the back. The top version of the Sandman came with a 5.0-liter 308 engine, with a top speed of 125 mph. Standout features include the radial tuned suspension – leaf springs in the rear, coil springs for the front wheels to address the radial tires.

Working on the Foxy ‘Tang!
Tumblr media
After months of this, the warm weather is finally rolling back around! I think it’s about time I started working on my ‘88 Fox Body Mustang GT.
Installed new headlights over the weekend:
Tumblr media
Easy enough to do; there are a total of seven (or so) 7/16th nuts bolting the whole thing in place. Each of the three pieces are separate, so it’s best to start with the main headlight, then the side marker lights, and finally the turn signal in the middle.
Tumblr media
Access is tight, so make sure you’ve got a few different 7/16th-sized wrenches on hand to maneuver in the awkward points, but otherwise it’s straightforward.
You can see how the seals on one side were just so damn old that the lens fell out when I took the light out:
Tumblr media
Also note that black bracket - it has to be mounted on the new lights and this one had stress cracks where its bolts held it on. No biggie though, still enough integrity since it’s not directly supporting the assembly.
Since these are three separate pieces, it’s just a matter of affixing all the old brackets to the new lights, installing rubber seals for them, and then sliding them into place in the right order, ensuring each sits in line with the others. A little bit of adjustment and everything’s set!
Tumblr media
Next up is weather stripping, seals, and some gaskets. Then tires (still on the original ones from 1988), brakes (pads, rotors, lines, fluid), fog lights (reseal the glass lenses), heater core and lines (that means stripping down the dash assembly and getting access to the back of the engine), new center console, headliner, removing the original security system (it’s a wiring nightmare), reinforcing the torque boxes (not sure if I’ll weld or bolt in the plates, but doing both would be good), and silly stuff like wipers and all that. Fluids are a must - oil and the like. Otherwise, it’s almost ready to go!
I know some folks like the patina look, but I’m probably going to strip this down and have it repainted in its factory Bright Regatta Blue at some point. I might have it done with a satin metallic finish though, we’ll see.

"beomgyu, dont move," you tucked the pretty little flowers in your boyfriend's hair.
being a brat he is, he moved his head as much as he can, just to annoy you, making the colourful flowers fall on the red and white plaid picnic mat underneath you.
"choi beomgyu, if you dont stop," you tried your best to stop him from moving, but he still wiggled his way out of your grip.
"baby, come on," you huffed, opting to sit on his laps, facing him.
he finally stopped moving, as you successfully placed the flowers.
"you could've just said you wanted me to call you baby," you rolled your eyes playfully. your eyes were trained to the flowers again, adjusting them to your liking. beomgyu just let out a laugh, eyes never leaving your face.
after you're somewhat satisfied with your work, you smiled to yourself, a little bit proud of it. choi beomgyu is already an art, but the flowers?? they made him look like a masterpiece.
"i love you, y/n," his words stopped your train of thoughts, almost stopping your heart from beating too. it was your first 'i love you', so you felt giddiness bubbling up your chest that you almost kissed him there and then.
"say it again, i wasnt paying attention just now," you grinned at him.
he laughed at your antics, before saying it again, firmer this time,
"i love you, y/n,"
you launched yourself onto the poor boy, falling on the ground together.
"i. love. you. too. choi. beomgyu," you peppered his face with kisses, after each word.

HATE. LOVE is like her feelings for prodsputnik, an anonymous soundcloud artist she adores which she may or may not have a stan account for. HATE is like her feelings towards her roommate, kang taehyun. she even claimed that researchers are bullshitting when they say there's a thin line between hate and love. but what if y/n figures out that prodsputnik and kang taehyun is the same person? will the line between love and hate stay thick and clear as fuck (y/n's words) to y/n or will it get blurry?

The 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Recreation
The Ford Mustang Boss 302 is one of the most legendary Mustangs ever made, so transforming one into a restomod would sacrilegious to a true Mustang enthusiast. Fortunately, Classic Recreations will now convert a 1969-70 Mustang into a Boss 302 restomod, and best of all, Ford has officially licensed the use of the Boss 302 name on this car!
Classic Recreations can either start by restoring an existing 1969 or 1970 Ford Mustang or sourcing a brand new body officially licensed through Ford, and it can do a full stock restoration or a track-ready restomod build. This show car is done up in Deep Metallic Grey with the Boss 302's signature body stripes and graphics, but Classic Recreations says that it can paint the car in any factory or custom colors that the customer requests. The interior also gets a modern touch with high-back seats, five-point harnesses, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, carbon fiber accents and aftermarket air conditioning.
From there, things can get as wild as customers want. Power comes from either a 5.0-liter Coyote crate engine tuned 490 horsepower or a more serious 363 cubic-inch crate engine from Ford Performance laying down 507 horsepower. Both engines feature fuel injection and aluminum radiator, and they are backed by a Tremec five-speed manual transmission sending power to the nine-inch Ford rear end with posi-traction. This car is sure to rumble thanks to a MagnaFlow performance exhaust system.
Since the Boss 302 was always about maximizing track performance, these restomod builds do just that thanks to coilover shocks, four-link rear suspension and tubular subframe connectors. For maximum handling, the brakes consist of four-piston Wilwood brakes with 12-inch rotors, while the American Racing wheels are wrapped in Michelin high-performance rubber.
Like any 1969 Mustang Boss 302, these restomods from Classic Recreations aren't cheap with packages starting at $184,900, but what you get for that price is a truly one-of-a-kind restomod that is definitely the boss of the road.

The GT500 starts at around $73,995, making it a high-end, performance-oriented car for those who want a genuine American experience.
2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500
Next is the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, housing a 5.8-liter supercharged V8 engine with 662 horsepower and 661 lb-ft of torque. This model could reach a top speed of 202mph, or when limited 155 mph. The engine was also the most powerful production V8 in the world at the time. The GT500 is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds.
The 2013 GT500 comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission, which is the only option available. This transmission features a dual-disc clutch and a short-throw shifter for improved performance and precision. The 2013 GT500 features a unique suspension setup that includes a stiffened rear axle, Bilstein dampers, and larger anti-roll bars. These upgrades help to improve the car’s handling and cornering ability.
breaks consist of six-piston calipers with 15-inch rotors, while the rear brakes are four-piston calipers with 13.8-inch rotors. While the GT500’s interior is largely unchanged from the standard Mustang, but it does feature a few unique touches. These include special Shelby-branded Recaro seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with contrast stitching, and aluminum pedals.
1968 Ford Mustang Shelby Cobra GT500KR
The 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby Cobra GT500KR was a collaboration between Carroll Shelby and Ford, dubbed ‘King of the Road.’ The 1968 GT500KR was equipped with a 428 cubic-inch Cobra Jet V8 engine that could produce up to 335 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. This engine was mated to a four-speed manual transmission, which helped to deliver an exhilarating driving experience. Additionally, the car featured a heavy-duty suspension system, power disc brakes, and a 3.50:1 rear axle ratio.
The styling on the GT500KR is different to other Mustang models featuring a unique hood scoop, fiberglass hood, and an aggressive front fascia with an integrated grille and driving lights. Only 1,053 were produced, making the vehicle a very expensive collector’s item.
2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca edition
The 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca edition is a track-orientated edition of the Mustang Boss 302. The engine in the Boss 302 Laguna Seca is a 5.0-liter V8, providing 444 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-speed manual transmission. 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429
The 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 is one of the original and best-performance Mustangs to be produced by Ford. Only 859 units were ever produced, mainly to celebrate the Boss 429 engine, and to win emphatically at NASCAR. The ruling from NASCAR at the time was that a performance vehicle had to produce a minimum of 500 production units for it to compete.
The Boss 429 is powered by a massive 7.0-liter V8 engine that was conservatively rated at 375 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. In reality, the engine produced closer to 500 horsepower and was one of the most powerful engines of its time. The engine was mated to a four-speed manual transmission and a 3.91:1 rear axle ratio.
Standout features of the Boss 429 included front disc brakes, an upgraded suspension system, and a functional hood scoop directing airflow into the engine. The interior was upgraded with high-back bucket seats, a dashboard-mounted tachometer, and Hurst shifter. As expected, this model is super rare and can easily fetch six figures at auction.
