An Unkindness of Ghosts, by Rivers Solomon
Tumblr media
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Aster is a healer and a scientist, splitting her time between working food production in the field decks, producing medicine and providing medical services among her fellow low- and mid-deckers, and serving as medical assistant to the Surgeon, a white-passing doctor heralded as a genius on the wealthy upper decks. She lives and works on the Matilda, a generational ship that fled Earth 300 years ago as it faced a now-forgotten calamity, its course set for the Promised Land. But the lower decks of Matilda have begun to face blackouts and power cuts reminiscent of the events of 25 years prior — the year Aster was born, as well as the year her mother killed herself. As Aster searches for the truth behind her mother's suicide, she finds connections not only to the technical difficulties plaguing the ship but also to the recent illness of the Sovereign, the ruler of Matilda. As her situation grows ever more precarious, Aster is determined to stop at nothing to uncover the truth, even if it means ripping the only life she's ever known to pieces.
This book was incredible. I've never met a protagonist quite like Aster: queer, neurodivergent, sharp in both manner and intelligence, and scarred by a lifetime of trauma but hell-bent on getting her way. The rest of the cast didn't disappoint either, with a varied collection of complexly-written and -motivated characters comprising both the heroic and villainous casts. Theo was an incredible supporting character. Again, complicated and frustrating at times, but I was so glad we got to meet him and even spend a chapter in his head. I would have liked to hear more from his point of view in fact, though I admit it wouldn't have served the plot any better. I just want more Theo, and I want him to be happy. It's a purely selfish desire. And no, there's nothing on AO3. I checked.
Anyway. There were a lot of ways this book could have gone wrong. The concept of "antebellum slavery recreated aboard a generation ship in transit" was ambitious, and I can think of few other authors who could have done it justice — N.K. Jemisin, perhaps? Jemisin wouldn't have done the character work in the same way though, so it would have been a very different book. I thought the level of scientific crunch was perfect for the story Solomon was trying to tell. The science seemed mostly sound to my layman's understanding(with the exception of the siluminium), but rather than taking on a starring role it formed the backbone that supported the main point of the story, which was about the society that relied on that science to survive.
My only complaint about this book is that the pacing gets a little weird in the last third. A lot of time passes, but the plot remains urgent, so there's some very weird time skips that leave the narrative feeling disjointed, even rushed at times. But this only brings the overall score down to maybe a 4.75, so I rounded it up. If you're someone who likes your sci-fi with science that at least puts up a pretense of being grounded in fact, but who still prefers a focus on character and society over hard scientific crunch, the style of this book would probably appeal to you. Just be mindful of the content warnings, as there's quite a lot of them and Solomon pulls no punches. I'll definitely be looking for more of their work in the future, as soon as space opens up on my TBR…

Brownells…King of Retro?
Tumblr media
What is retro? Well it can be described as something from the past, from history. In the firearm world, retro typically is an older firearm style that’s not commonly produced any longer. Could be an old shotgun or bolt action, maybe even a lever gun. When it comes to retro military style firearms, Brownells has been the absolute king of retro in recent years. Many are trying to do what Brownells has been doing for quite some time.
Tumblr media
Some years ago Brownells launched their complete line of retro rifles. The main attraction here were the M16 rifle variants from around the beginning of Stoner’s M16 design. Think of what our soldiers were carrying in the 60’s and 70’s during the Vietnam war. There were a number of M16 rifle and carbine variants. Many folk were getting some what tired of the same old Mlok handguards and flat top receivers and wanted to go back in time to the days of drum rear sights, front sight- post gas blocks and carry handles. Brownells launched their retro line with the help of content creators like MrGunsngear and Hank & Lola Strange. It was a hit! But that wasn’t their only trick.
Tumblr media
Some years later, Brownells in conjunction with PWS thought it a great idea to bring back a modernized variant of the old Armalite AR-180/AR-18 rifle. This is a gas piston AR variant. So the Brownells BRN-180 was born! I own 2 BRN-180 builds at the moment and these things are a hoot! The platform runs great suppressed as well with it’s adjustable gas system. You can dial back the gas to operate the piston to compensate for the increased backpressure from a suppressor. The system works and works very well in my experience. Brownells didn’t just stop with one BRN-180, but has offered them in calibers like 7.62x39, .300 Blackout, .223 Wylde as well as .350 Legend. Many different barrel length from 10.5” up to 18” to choose from as well. One of their super slick ideas was a .300 Blackout version with a gas shut off so that you can run it more like a straight pull bolt action for supe stealth quietness using a suppressor and subsonic ammunition. And just to keep the retro action happening, they offered a replica AR-180 style folding buttstock.
Tumblr media
In the last couple of years Brownells has started offering the different style retro upper receivers, bolt carrier groups as well as other period specific parts such as castle nuts and charging handles. So for those of us that prefer to build our own retro rifle, Brownells has got you covered! One of my more recent builds was a retro inspired Dissipator build using a Brownells C7 carry handle upper receiver and A1 furniture. This has been one of my all time favorite retro inspired builds and I’m already looking forward to another one. So who is the king of retro? With out a doubt currently it’s the good folks over at Brownells who continue to bring the heat with their retro line up.

The ASA 7.5 Side Charging Pistol is based on a standard AR design but has no stock, just a foam-sleeve-covered buffer tube that can be used as a check rest, and a short 7.5-inch barrel with a 1-in-14-inch twist rate. ( 60)Īmerican Spirit Arms (ASA), based out of Scottsdale, Arizona, is best known for its non-reciprocating, side-charging designs. It accepts Magpul PMAGs and comes with flip-up sights as well as an SB-15 stabilizing brace. It features a 12.5-inch, free-floating barrel, an adjustable gas piston system and AR controls. The P716 is a true big-bore megapistol chambered in 7.62 mm NATO. Sig’s pistols are a favorite among law enforcement, and in recent years the company has offered a complete line of megapistols as well. Sig Sauer has been in the firearms business for over 150 years, with most of that time focused on producing military arms. The threaded barrel is also suppressor ready.
#Yankee hill quad rail handguard slr full
With the 8-inch barrel and standard handguard, only the flash suppressor is exposed, and there is a full 14 inches of uninterrupted Picatinny rail space on top for optics. A Torx wrench can also be used to quickly remove the MPX’s barrel/gas piston assembly, giving the user a choice of installing 4.5-, 6.5- or 8-inch barrels. The handguard can be removed without any tools and easily replaced. The upper and lower receivers are both made from aluminum so that it is surprisingly lightweight. This fully ambidextrous, semi-automatic, piston-operated megapist ol is designed to mimic an AR in its controls and operation. The Scorpion ships with two translucent, 20-round magazines, but 30-round magazines are also available from CZ-USA. The pistol features an ambidextrous magazine release and safety as well as a reversible changing handle. Fully adjustable low-profile diopter sights are included and can be easily removed. Along the top of the receiver is an 11-inch Picatinny rail for installing optics and sights.
#Yankee hill quad rail handguard slr plus
Based on a venerable submachine gun, this is one megapistol that keeps things simple by allowing you to use the same ammunition as your normal carry gun, plus the longer 7.72-inch barrel adds extra velocity to the standard 9mm ammunition. The CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1 Pistol is a semi-auto powerhouse chambered in 9mm. For those looking for a powerful megapistol that can be customized to their exact requirement, DoubleStar definitely deserves a very close look. These include flattop upper receivers, chrome-lined barrels, low-profile gas blocks, quad-rail handguards and enhanced flash suppressors, to name just a few. Featuring direct gas impingement systems for reliable operation, the powerful AR-platform pistols are available with a variety of options in each barrel length. Whether it is for home or travel, a megapistol may fill a necessary, life-saving niche in your self-defense arsenal.ĭoubleStar produces AR pistols in 300 Blackout (and 5.56mm NATO) in two different barrel lengths: 7.5 and 9 inches. And, by selecting powerful chamberings with larger-diameter projectiles than the commonly found 5.56mm NATO round, you can have an intriguing option for a defensive gun. Call it what you will, but these semi-automatic pistols deliver higher-powered ammunition, greater velocity, larger magazine capacities, improved accuracy, longer-range effectiveness and easy accessorizing, and sometimes all of the above. Enter the megapistol, the trunk gun, the briefcase commando. There is, however, no reason we can’t up the ante and turn even “standard” handguns into much more effective defensive weapons. While extremely compact handguns have always had a niche, it was full-sized and large handguns that were relied on first and foremost throughout history. In a world where micro-compact pocket pistols seem to rule, it is easy to forget that size does matter.

Subsonic 223 loads forum mod#
Not such a big deal when you’re comparing a 1″ drift to a 1.6″ drift at 100 yards in a 10 mph crosswind, but considerably better at 500 yards where the 223 will drift around 30″ compared with the Blackout at 50″. The high speed and short time to target also helps the 223 in wind drift, where it beats the 300 Blackout by around 50%-80% depending on range. That makes getting hits on man sized targets with the 223 at 500 yards fairly easy with a good rest, but considerably more frustrating with the 300 Blackout, especially if you have errors in your ranging. By the time we’re at 500 yards, the 300 Blackout is well past 90″ down compared with a 223 at around 50″, or about half the drop. While the 223 crosses the 10″ down mark at a barely-better 320-340 yards compared with the 275 on the 300 Blackout, it stays much flatter further out. For boar at less than 100 yards, it’d work a treat and they wouldn’t know what hit them if you ran the subsonic rounds with a suppressor. It’s also far lower in energy than I’m comfortable using on a deer. Making an accurate hit at 200 yards with a subsonic round is a bit of fantasy, because you’re looking at 30+ inches of drop even if you sighted at 100 yards. The tougher part to account for on these heavier bullets is the rainbow trajectory. Wow, so little drop in velocity, but I guess that’s what happens when it’s poking along so slowly that wind resistance is minimal. Unless you can range accurately, it’s going to get very tough making hits past 300 yards. Zeroed for 100 yards, you’re at 10″ low by about 275. It generates a bit more energy at the muzzle than 223 and uses sane speeds, so I think it’d be a better close range deer cartridge than the 223. Very similar to ballistics on the 7.62×39, but lagging in power at 100-150 yards. It’s important to separate the 110 grain supersonic round vs the 200+ grain subsonic rounds due to their very different ballistic profiles.Įffectively, it’s a 100 yard cartridge for hunting deer.
Subsonic 223 loads forum mod#
223 magazinesįor a civilian shooter, getting into 300 Blackout when you already have an AR-15 is pretty easy: you can buy a dedicated upper to have some flexibility, or switch to a 300 Blackout barrel for a permanent mod and you’re done. The 300 Blackout was designed with a few things in mind: If only we could get 7.62×39 performance in an AR-15… And then there’s the case taper: which enables great semi automatic reliability but doesn’t work well with the straight magwell and magazines of the AR15. The case head is wide enough that you give up quite a bit of metal on bolt lugs after hogging out the bolt head. 30 in the AR-15? Some manufacturers offer AR-15’s that run 7.62×39, but that cartridge isn’t the best for the AR-15. The AR-10 delivers a lot more power but it’s heavier, gives up magazine capacity, isn’t nearly as common or standardized as the AR-15 platform, and the case capacity is a bit of a waste if you want to run subsonic rounds. Within the Armalite family, there’s the AR-10 in. Let’s dive into the 300 Blackout as it performs against the. It’s easy to convert AR-15’s to and easy to form cases if you’re into reloading. Delivering similar ballistic performance to the 7.62×39, but using a slightly lighter bullet, the 300 Blackout alleviates some hunter’s concerns around bullet mass on game AND makes for a handy suppressed round in an AR-15. The 300 Blackout, sometimes called the 300 AAC Blackout and somewhat similar to the 300 Whisper®, is what happens when you want an easy 30 caliber conversion for your AR-15.

Been thinking about finally gatting parts for a 300 Blackout upper. Was going to get a 13.7 or 13.9 5.56 built first, but the barrel and handguard I want are not available right now. Q restocked their handguard and barrel, which seem like a good length and twist rate for 300 Blackout. It'd be a lot cheaper than trying to find a Sig Rattler upper and I still have an Aero upper receiver to use. After getting the upper dialed in it would be a matter of getting a CGS Group suppressor, optic, and light. Heck, might throw in that fancy 70 degree safety and make it a distant relative to a Q Honey Badger.

Blackout może się zdarzyć – jak zabezpieczyć dom?

Data 25 03 2022
Przed skutkami blackoutu sprzęt domowy zabezpieczy zasilacz UPS. Stale monitoruje on przepływ mocy i w razie awarii od razu automatycznie przejmuje rolę sieci elektrycznej, zapewniając stały dopływ prądu – wskazuje Rafał Brzuska.

What’s Next? Brownells BRN-180…
Brownells absolutely hit it out of the park with their Retro line of AR-based firearms. All of those older style military looking AR-15s like the M16A1 and A2 and the XM177. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, Brownells partnered up with PWS(Primary Weapon Systems) to revive the old piston design of the AR-18/180. They named it the BRN-180. Initially offering these in .223 Wylde and .300 Blackout chambering, they have had some slight revisions over the life of the product line. Brownells never sold these as complete firearms, but rather offered the complete upper receiver assemblies in 10.5”, 16” and 18” lengths for the .223 Wylde chambering and .300 Blackout in 10.5”. Brownells had their own lower receiver manufactured to look like the original sheet metal stamped version that the original AR-18 had, but made like a modern AR lower receiver. These also had an integrated rail for mounting of a folding stock. See one of the beauties of this platform is it’s piston driven gas system and dual recoil spring and short bolt/carrier assembly. This allows for the entire action to be kept within the receiver…no buffer tube!
Tumblr media
There was a 1st generation design and then later a revised version they called the generation 2. My understanding is that the design changes were slight changes in the attachment of the hand guard as well as to the gas system. Some people didn’t really care for the s shaped charging handle due to interference with certain optics mounting systems, so Brownells later came out with their “sport” version which has just a straight charging handle or rather a knob. One of the other requests from many consumers was an additional caliber, specifically people wanted to see the BRN-180 offered in 7.62x39 for those folks that are fans of AKs and that caliber in particular. Brownells of course listened to their customers and low and behold a new version in 7.62x39 was introduced in 16” length. Among the different caliber options, Brownells also started to offer their complete uppers with a Cerekote finish. The usual ODG and FDE come available every now and again for those looking to do something other than the usual black. Some other companies such as Midwest Industries have developed folding stock assemblies, both retro looking like the original style and more modern looking options. To say the BRN-180 has been well received by both the consumer and industry alike would be an understatement.
Tumblr media
The most recent offering by Brownells has to do with the gas system. They offered the SH version which offers a 3rd gas setting on their gas piston. All previous designed offered just 2 gas setting, suppressed and unsuppressed. This new version in only 300 Blackout has a 3rd setting that totally switches the gas system off making it a straight pull bolt action. The also re-designed the charging to better assist when operating in this mode. So what’s next with this gem of a retro firearm system? I like where Brownells is going with offering additional gas port settings… I’d like to see additional gas port settings offered on the other calibers, such as an intermediate gas setting in between the suppressed and unsuppressed to help tune for different suppressor types. Regardless of which direction Brownells takes their BRN-180, it’s bound to be a big hit as it has been so far.

Brothers and Sisters of Tumblr, Today, I have taken my first official step on my path to my first Short Barreled Rifle. This will be built around a lower set I share with my dad and my little brother. Years ago I got a set of sequential serial numbered lowers. My dad built his 300 Blackout on his. My little brother built a 458 SOCOM with his, now it is my turn. For many years I have wanted to make this build, I have been squirreling away parts when I could find them. And, recently I entered an auction for an original upper. Boys and girls, The M231 Firing Port Weapon (FPW) build has started moving.
