Never Hold Back Your Step... Part 13
This really is getting down to the end here. I'm already at the Mind Flayer in the spot where I'm at in the story so...yeah. Then it would just one chapter after that. Maybe. I don't know. But it's sad to see this one go, too.
Of course as with "Can Anybody See Me?" once this is done, I will begin work on the final story which will take us all the way to the end of the fourth season. Which I hope to get done before season 5. Ideally.
It will have a line from a song in a musical just like the last two (1776 and The Scarlet Pimpernel respectively) so you have any songs you think will fit the theme of the third book (which will be Steve and Eddie clashing over nerds vs sports until that fateful day in March) let me know in the comments or tags or even a DM or ask. It took me months to come up with the title for this one, so any help would be great.
Here we have the dipshit detectives trying to figure out the message and the "secret tunnel".
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8Â Part 9Â Part 10 Part 11 Part 12
~
Once they explained everything to Robin, she told them about what the message said. And no given the context of the message coming from the mall it suddenly made too sense.
âThe clock tower, the shoe shop and the Chinese place,â she crowed. âItâs got to be.â
âYou sure you translated it correctly?â Steve asked. âBecause what the fuck does blue meeting yellow have anything to do with the clock tower?â
Robin rolled her eyes and huffed out a deep sigh. âThe hour and minute hands are blue and yellow and meeting in the west would be 9:45!â
Eddie tilted his head to the side. âAM or PM?â
Robin stared at him for a moment in shock. âOh. I donât know. Could be either I guess.â
Eddie looked at his watch and cursed. âAs thrilling as all this has been, I have to get to band practice.â He gave Steveâs shoulder a squeeze. âBe careful, Stevie. Okay?â
Steve nodded and squeezed Eddieâs shoulder back. God, he just want to kiss him goodbye, because it might be his last opportunity to do so. But Dustin and Robin were watching and probably half of the mall too. âAs careful as I can be.â
âHow can you be so super chill about this?â Robin asked after he left. âLike Russians are running around our mall and Eddie acts like this is a normal Tuesday for you?â
Dustin and Steve shared a glance.
But Steve just scoffed and rolled his eyes. âLike Iâve had the worst year. My girlfriend broke up with me, I got my head bashed in by Hargrove, I got harassed by the basketball team, I nearly got water dumped on my head because I won the part fair and square, then the same asshole tried to scramble my brains further, I didnât get into the right colleges and was forced to work here instead of the rec center pool like have for the last three years, and a fuck ton of other things. Now Russians have set up shop in my home town? This is just the cherry on top of a very shit filled cake.â
Robin and Dustin winced. Dustin knew that Steveâs year was actually way worse than the truncated version he gave Robin, but they couldnât tell her about the tunnels, El, monsters, and secret labs. Hence, fuck ton of things.
âOkay,â Robin conceded, âit does sound like your average Tuesday.â She looked up at the clock. âYouâre supposed to be off, anyway. So shoo and take the genius child with you.â
Dustin beamed up Steve smugly, but Steve just knocked his hat off on his way to clock out.
âHey!â Dustin shouted after him. He turned to Robin. âCan you believe this guy?â
Robin just shrugged. âYouâre the one whoâs friends with him, not me.â
Steve walked out moments later, twirling the hat on his finger. He walked past Dustin to the mall food court. He stopped and turned around.
âAre you coming or are you going to keep harassing workers?â he huffed, putting a hand on his hip.
Robin burst out laughing as Dustin hurried to catch up, scooping his hat off the floor in haste.
Steve shook his head as they walked through the mall. âHey if we grab my binoculars, I bet we could stake out the mall and look for Russians.â
Steve looked at his watch and sighed. Eddie wouldnât get done with band practice until much later tonight and he didnât want to go back to his large empty house, because of course his parents fucked off to the Caribbean for the summer. His father had forced him to give up a job he loved for the most humiliating retail job imaginable and then fucked off to some place pleasant, leaving him to rot.
âYeah, okay.â
Dustin let out a whoop and jumped up and down. âYou wonât regret this!â
Steve buried his head in his hands. âI already do.â
~
Steve and Dustin were hiding behind a large potted plant with Dustinâs binoculars watching people go by.
âWhat are we supposed to looking for, anyway?â Steve asked, scanning the crowds.
âRussians.â
Steve tore himself away from the binoculars to glare at him. âThank you for that unhelpful assessment. I know Iâm supposed to be looking for Russians, but what do Russians look like?â
âI donât know,â Dustin huffed. âTall, blond, scary looking dudes, I guess.â
Steve rolled his eyes and kept looking. He spotted Anna Jacobi flirting with Mark Lewinsky and huffed out a a noise of disgust.
âYou have got to be kidding me,â he said with a sigh. âAnna can do way better than swamp ass Lewinsky.â
Dustin smacked his shoulder. âCan you please take this seriously? Youâre supposed to be looking for Russians, not your next date. Besides you already have the perfect girl right there!â
Steve rolled his eyes and went back to looking through the binoculars. âDonât say Robin.â
âRobin.â Was the immediate response.
âNo, man,â Steve said as Dustin grabbed the binoculars from him, âsheâs not my type. Sheâs not even in the ballpark of my type.â Considering that she had boobies and not a dick, pretty much sealed the box on any chances of that romantic relationship going anywhere.
Dustin looked over at him and sneered. âAnd whatâs your type again? Not awesome?â
Fuck you. But Steve sneered and stuck his tongue out. âThank you.â
Dustin grinned back at him with a little hum.
âLook,â Steve said, âfor your information, sheâs still in school. And sheâs weird. But not like Eddie weird. Weird, weird. And sheâs hyper. Like worse than Eddie. At least if you put a book in his hand, heâll settle down. Sheâll tap her fingers and twirl her gum. She was also one of those kids in drama who didnât think I deserved the role of Thomson. Thatâs a bad look. And sheâs in band? But not a rock band like Eddie, a fucking trumpet.â He twisted his lips in disgust. âNo.â
Dustin turned to face him. âNow that youâre out of school, that means youâre an adult. And donât you think you should move past primitive social constructs like popularity?â
Steve looked at him as if he was joking. âPopularity? Are you fucking with me right now? Did you forget I wasnât popular for the last four months of high school? Primitive constructs, I tell you. Where the hell did you learn that shit? Camp Know Nothing?â
âCamp Know Where, actually,â Dustin huffed, âAnd no, itâs shit I learned from life. Instead of dating someone you think will make you cool again, why not date someone you enjoy being around for a change? Like me and Suzie.â He smiled broadly. He turned back to watching the through the binoculars.
Steve was soo close to just telling the little shit that he was dating someone he enjoyed being around, someone who did make him look cooler, someone who loved him for him and not in spite of him. But instead he took a deep breath and said, âOh Suzie. Yeah, you mean hotter than Phoebe Cates. That Suzie. And letâs think about how exactly you scored a girlfriend?â
He scratched his head, appearing to think about it, then he snapped his fingers. âOh yeah, with my advice. Because thatâs how this works, Henderson. I give the advice and you follow through. Not the other way around, all right?â
Dustin sighed. âI just think you could really benefit from being with someone like her, you know?â
Steve rubbed the top of the kidâs head. âIâm doing better than you think I am. Better then everyone thinks I am.â
Dustin stared at him skeptically, but left it alone. Steve knew that there was no way he was going to leave it alone. He just knew that it was going to come back and bite him in the ass in the worst way and at the worst time. He could feel it.
~
âThere is a secret room under the mall,â Steve said slowly, not quite wanting to believe this. âAnd we can get there through the air vents in the break room?â
Robin nodded emphatically. âYeah, isnât that cool?â
He had no idea how to tell her how uncool that actually was, because Jesus fuck, the deeper they got into this, the more over his head he felt.
âLetâs go see your secret tunnel,â he said with a sigh, rubbing his face, just suddenly exhausted by the whole thing.
He followed them to the back and looked up at the vent in utter despair. Sighing, he got a ladder and set it up, then hunted around for a screwdriver. Once he found one, he tucked it between his teeth and started climbing. He reached the vent and unscrewed the screws holding the vent in place.
âOi!â he called out to Dustin. âHold these!â He held out the screws for him to take. âDonât lose them, otherwise people are going to ask why there is a great big gaping hole in the wall.â
Dustin rolled his eyes, but did as he was told. Steve put the screwdriver back between his teeth and took off the vent cover.
âItâs a tight space,â he murmured. âHey, Robin you think you could fit? Youâre pretty thin.â
Robin put her hands on her hips and glared up at him. âWhile I appreciate you thinking Iâm skinny enough to fit, I question your sanity if you think Iâm going down the creepy tunnel.â
âVent!â Dustin huffed. âYouâve both called it a tunnel. Itâs not a tunnel, itâs a vent. And none of us are small enough to fit.â
DING! DING! âHey!â someone called out from the front of the store. âIs anyone here?â
Steve who had been climbing down the ladder, stopped and shared a look with Dustin. A slow smile took over their faces.
âErica!â they said together with glee.
They ran out to the front with Robin fast on their heels. They skidded to a stop and their smiles grew to actual grins when they saw that she was alone and not with her many friends.
âErica...hey,â Steve said smoothly, leaning against the counter. âWhat can I get you?â
She narrowed her eyes at him suspiciously. âWhy are you suddenly being so nice?â
Just then Dustin and Robin burst out of the back room and stumbled into front and Erica was even more suspicious than she was before.
So Steve bundled her over to one of the booths and tried plying her with all the ice cream a little girl could conceivably eat, while Dustin filled both Robin and Erica about the messages and all their clues and how they put it all together. It was a hard but impressive sell.
âSo will you do it for America?â Dustin asked.
âWell, you canât spell America without Erica,â she said smugly. âA life time supply of Scoops Ice Cream and youâve got a deal.â
Robin and Steve shared a glance. Then Steve reached across the table to shake Ericaâs hand.
âDeal.â
~
Part 14 Part 15 Part 16
And if you remember something else there from WIP Wednesday... yeah. It wasn't fitting with the rest of the story and had to be cut. Sadness.

MCU Timeline: Iron Man. Part 1 (First 36 hours)
I'm starting a new series of posts. Here I will try to create a logical timeline of the Infinity Saga. No promise to do it for every movie though, as I'm focused on Tony.
I find this attempt necessary because of the many conflicting timelines, official and unofficial, that exist on the Internet and in books. Most of them forgot to include logic when determining dates and periods. Including "official" ones. Remember, if the guys at Marvel can't create something that works, that's their problem, and fans shouldn't just buy what they say. Shitty job is shitty job.
Let's start from the beginning - 36 hours before the attack on the convoy in Afghanistan. Or should I say "about 34 hours" because, taking all the factors into account, I couldn't squeeze 36 hours in there. But it's fine, because the number 36 was most likely approximate and meant "a day and a half". The events cover 3 days in the second half of January or the first half of February 2008 (here's why). All times are approximate, except for 7:00 and 11:00, which is clearly stated in the film.
Day 1 - Las Vegas:
5 pm (34 hours before the attack) - Apogee Award ceremony, Tony gambles at the casino.
8 pm (31 hours before the attack) - Christine Everhart catches Tony leaving the casino. They go to his house in Malibu together.
Why 5-8 pm: in the scene with Christine and Tony, we see that it is already dark outside. In February, sunset in Las Vegas occurs at 5:30 p.m., and it takes some time for the sky to turn black. Considering we had to get it done in about 36 hours, I gave Tony 3 hours in Las Vegas. I doubt he spent more time there: the ceremony wouldn't last long, and Tony didn't play in the casino for long after Rhodey came for him.
Day 2 - Malibu, Pepper's birthday:
1 am (26 hours before the attack) - Tony is back in Malibu. Sex with Christine.
Why 1 am: trip from Las Vegas to Malibu by car takes 4.5 hours.
6 am (21 hours before the attack) - scheduled departure from LA to Afghanistan. Tony is late.
7:00 am (20 hours before the attack) - Jarvis wakes up Christine. Tony is not in bed. Looks like he didn't sleep there at all.
7:00-7:30 am - Tony is working in the lab. Christine looks around the mansion. Pepper spends some time with her (about 30 min).
7:30 am (19.5 hours before the attack) - Pepper comes down to the lab and reminds Tony that he is 1.5 hours late for his scheduled flight.
9 am (18 hours before the attack) - 3 hours late, the private jet finally takes off for Afghanistan with Tony and Rhodey on board.
11 am (16 hours before the attack) - boys eat, talk and have fun on board, then Tony is taken to the bedroom on the plane (for sex and sleep). Rhodes is awake and drinking.
Day 3 - Afghanistan:
9 pm (LA)/9:30 am (Afghanistan) (6 hours before the attack) - Tony and Rhodey arrive at Bagram Air Base, Parwan Province, Afghanistan. They spend some time there watching The Air Force Drill Team while waiting for weapons to be loaded for presentation.
Why 9:30 am: a flight from Los Angeles to Afghanistan by private jet can take an average of 13 to 16 hours. Given that Tony was late, the pilot likely sped up and cut the time down to 12 hours to make it on time.
2 am (LA)/2:30 pm (Afghanistan) (1 hour before the attack) - the convoy reaches the proving ground in Kunar province. Presentation of Jericho. Stane can't sleep, waiting for a message from The Ten Rings.
Why 2:30 pm: the trip from Bagram to Kunar province takes at least 4-5 hours. With heavy cargo it should be even longer.
3 am (LA)/3:30 pm (Afghanistan) - the attack.
Mistakes made by Marvel:
Light clothing in Afghanistan in January/February. The daily mean there is 36-40°F during these months.
There is no such thing as 72° at 7am in Malibu in the winter. Perhaps that was the actual temperature on set instead. That it was colder outside is also indicated by Tony wearing a long-sleeve and a jacket on the way to the airport.

Class time. If he's teaching 3 courses, that means about 9 hours a week. If he's lucky and/or senior enough to get his pick of teaching slots, he could have all 3 in the same block of time--say, 8, 10, and 12 on Monday, Wednesday & Friday--or they could be spread out across the week (e.g., a 9 AM on Tuesday/Thursday, a 2 PM on MWF, and 6-9 PM Wednesday nights). Class time is the least flexible element in Dr. Blorbo's schedule; missing even one class meeting is going to be very obvious to his colleagues and department chair. (If the story is set in the present, 1 or more classes may take place via Zoom, meaning Dr. Blorbo could cover them from an unconventional location, but they still have to happen on time.)
Office hours: usually 1 hour a week per 3-credit course. Dr. Blorbo probably has some flexibility in scheduling these--most people will work them in around their teaching schedule, so they aren't making separate trips to campus for it--and blowing them off once in a while is normal/probably won't get him in trouble unless a student raises a stink and it's known that he's been skipping out a lot lately.)
Meetings. In addition to department meetings, mentioned above, if Dr. Blorbo is tenured or tenure-track, he probably has to do "college service," which is usually being on one or more committees, working groups, etc. These can be college-wide or within the academic department, and probably take place once a month. Attendance is usually taken, and absences will be noted, but it isn't nearly as big a deal as not showing up for a class you were supposed to teach. So if you want to have Dr. Blorbo miss a work obligation for Plot Reasons, a committee meeting is a good choice.
There will also be occasional one-off obligations under the general heading of showing your face/representing your department at things. For instance, there are usually calls for faculty volunteers for things like directing traffic on move-in day, giving directions to confused students on the first day of class, handing out pizza slices at the "here's why you should major in our thing" student open house, reading out names at graduation, etc. It's generally expected that you'll volunteer for one or two of these, especially if you're in the trying-to-get-tenure stage of your career, and once you've put your name down, you shouldn't miss it without a good reason. But you do have a choice about which ones you sign up for.
Other than that, there's usually a lot of freedom to fit the rest of your work--grading, preparing lessons, research, etc--into your schedule however you want. Some professors go to their on-campus office for an eight-hour day Monday-Friday, and do their grading and research in the unscheduled parts of their day, but it's also acceptable to just parachute into campus when you have a specific obligation, and do your other work wherever.
(Oh, but if your research requires, like, lab equipment, there may be a schedule for that. No one will be checking to see if Dr. Blorbo is actually there, but if he misses his slot on the Big Special Expensive Machine We Only Have One Of, and hasn't prearranged a swap with anyone, that's his problem.)
For creative writing purposes, can you go into what a typical day is for a professor? Like what their teaching schedule looks like, when most fit in their research time, etc?
Ahaha, well. I don't want to just say "you can completely make it up," but also.... you can pretty much just make it up, and what is the case for one professor is definitely not going to be true for another. I have known people who will send emails at 1am and/or 4am, and actually finding and fitting in research time for most academics is also "lololololol what." So I can give you a roster of typical daily academic tasks and categories, and then let you know if that if you want to throw them up in the air and scatter them around in literally whatever-the-fuck order, there is probably a beleaguered academic who has done that, but with an even worse sleep schedule. So:
Most permanent faculty at a university are hired as assistant (tenure-track) professors. Once they pass the tenure-committee review (usually about 5 years into the job) they are appointed as associate (tenured) professors. Full professors are considerably senior and/or have been in the field for a long time and have a distinguished service record, excluding various wunderkinds who get it early (but are not common).
If the faculty is just teaching one class a semester or has an irregular appointment, i.e. they step in to teach when the university needs them, they are adjunct professors. You can gain a lot of cred and/or commiserating groaning in your AO3 comments by complaining about how little money the adjunct faculty makes, how erratic their schedule is, and how there is generally little-to-no actual career advancement possible in that position, unless they manage to reapply to a permanent post.
There are also a lot of Visiting Assistant Professors (and similar title), for 2- or 3-year/non-permanent appointments. Many institutions now also offer 1-year VAPs with only a possibility of renewal for 1 additional year or not at all. Those institutions should go straight to hell.
Most professors have 3/3 teaching loads, i.e. they'll teach 3 classes per semester (assuming winter/spring semester). Others have 2/2/2 loads for trimesters (also known as quarters). It can be more, i.e. 4/4, but that's for sucky entry-level teaching-only positions and someone in that role would be unlikely to have any research or service (i.e. institutional committee or internal college) commitments. They would probably also mostly be teaching introductory or freshman-year general survey courses. It depends on how much you want to torture your fictional academic.
Free food? Yes. You will see a healthy amount of the department there, whether faculty or student.
Please remember to have your fictional academic receive approximately 50 student emails a day wherein they ask something that is clearly answered in the syllabus or on the course website, and to see how polite they can possibly be in telling said student this.
Most grading is now done online, so the red pen is only metaphorical, but you can leave SO many Pointed Comments on Canvas Speed Grader. But if you want to torture Dr. Blorbo, you can have the e-grading system suddenly stop working, so they have to grade three classes' worth of introductory freshman history essays by hand. Not based on real events.
Likewise, there will be endless bullshit with the dean's office and/or central university administration, wherein there will be so many Urgent Budget Updates and Breaking News From The Chancellor and We Regret To Inform You We Cannot Hire Someone For That Position.
Related to the budget woes: they will ask you to do things like "make sure you print on both sides of the paper!" or otherwise "economize." Contemplating murder is acceptable and encouraged.
The administrative assistant in each department holds the entire department together. They will be extremely indispensable. Your fictional academic, if they know what's good for them, will befriend that person and/or grovel at their feet. Said person is also usually responsible for scheduling classrooms, which can cause all kinds of juicy drama in the academic fandom if there is One Particular Classroom that everyone hates and lo and behold, Dr. Blorbo is stuck there yet again. They will then probably also fire off multiple passive-aggressive emails attempting to correct the problem. The administrative assistant can grant and/or ignore these requests at their discretion, depending on how much beef they have with Dr. Blorbo and/or how motivated they are to solve their problems.
Department meetings! Who asked for them? Nobody! Who has to attend them? Everybody! They go on for two hours every other week (possibly more depending on how meeting-happy your department chair is) and you will wish for death!
Likewise, the department staff sending out passive-aggressive emails about how they really NEED one more volunteer for (insert university event here). Dr. Blorbo, if they are smart, will delete these emails and pretend they never saw them, but sometimes it may be unavoidable. Bitching and moaning will follow.
For research: it really depends on what academic field Dr. Blorbo is in, since the hard sciences, etc. look quite different and I, as a humanities person, can't speak to that. Most academics aim to fairly regularly publish a piece in a peer-reviewed journal; you can check Dr. Blorbo's field to see what journals they might be trying to submit a journal article (usually max. 8000 words, sometimes more) to.
This will go through a process called Peer Review, wherein two anonymous academics review your work (also anonymized to them) to make sure that you are not talking out of your ass. It is a running joke that Reviewer 2 will always, ALWAYS be more grumpy and critical and otherwise annoying. Invoking the specter of Dr. Blorbo receiving a peer review evaluation for their article will send a shiver down every academic's spine.
If Dr. Blorbo has recently finished their PhD, they may be working on converting their PhD thesis into an academic monograph. The most horrible part of this process, hands down, is reviewing proofs to make an index. Don't ask me how I know this.
However, academic monographs take a lot of time and work and most academics are mostly focused on publishing journal articles, book chapters (in collected volumes) or editing/working in collaboration with other projects.
Likewise: Dr. Blorbo will have to write book reviews. This is accomplished by the very scientific method of subscribing to various industry publications and/or email lists that will sometimes send out lists of books that need to be reviewed and solicit people to sign up. You will then receive a hard copy of the book (usually) and have 3 months or so to read it and write a review. The first 2 months of this, give or take, will consist of the book sitting untouched on the academic's desk as they remind themselves that they still have plenty of time to do it.
There can, however, be INCREDIBLE beef in book reviews, and while the standards of professional courtesy dictate that you don't go great-guns-flaming calling someone else in your field a moron (in more technical language), sometimes it is unavoidable.
Do they get paid for any of this extra intellectual work? Lol. No. No they do not. They don't get paid enough for their actual job.
Dr. Blorbo will inevitably hear some Hot Gossip about what nonsense has recently happened at which field-specific conference (where academics go to present research papers and network with other academics and make regrettable decisions at the open bar). They will then rush to secretly text all their other academic friends with OOH JUICY ACADEMIC DRAMA. Their friends will do the same whenever the opportunity arises to reciprocate.
Removing the coffee machine from the break room/faculty kitchen is grounds for mutiny.
Anyway. I am sure there are many, MANY more, but if you want an authentic slice of long-suffering academic life for Dr. Blorbo, this is all a good place to start.

3/15/20 corona extra: cracking open cold covid facts
Announcements & Thank Yous
âAbout This Newsletterâ has been moved to the bottom so itâs easier to skip if youâve seen the other ones.
Some institutions do not update on Sundays. I have included the date of everything that is in question. That is also why this update is early :)
Thank you to @hysterical-random-things for letting me know about the first death in NYC and where to find that news, to @nanook2000 for information and links about KYâs response, and to @akashicsage for all of the good deets on San Diego county. If you have reliable information from a good source that I donât seem to have, please shoot me a message/ask/pigeon!
Places now included in the newsletter are: Utah, Oregon, Washington, the Netherlands, Minnesota, Kentucky, Georgia, Nebraska, the UK, and possibly some others I missed here but included in the newsletter. Please send an ask or a message if you would like a place included!
A word on mortality rates: they look very high in some places in the US right now because testing is limited to the sickest patients. People who have mild illness and are well enough to go or stay home may not have been tested until very recently when several states started mass testing/drive through testing. Testing is still limited in a lot of states, so this will be a rolling increase situation, I anticipate.
A word on case numbers: due to the aforementioned expansion of testing capacity in the US (thank fuck), case numbers are gonna grow in a really, really scary-looking way this week. This is not actually as scary as it seems, because it means we are catching more of the cases that would have gone unnoticed and have better information to help more people.
Just The Numbers
Case numbers
Total cases: 153,517 (10,982 new)
Total deaths: 5,735 (343 new)
China: 81,048 cases (27 new!!), 3204 deaths (10 new)
This gives us a mortality rate of ~3.95%
Excluding China: 72,469 cases (10,955 new), 2531 deaths (333 new)
143 countries/territories reporting cases, 9 are new today including:
Kazakhstan: 6 cases
Curacao: 2 cases
Namibia: 2 cases
Central African Republic: 1 case
Congo: 1 case
Equatorial Guinea: 1 case
Eswatini: 1 case
Mauritania: 1 case
Mayotte: 1 case
Italy is reporting over 20,000 cases with over 1400 deaths
Iran is reporting over 10,000 cases with over 700 deaths
South Korea, Spain, and Germany are reporting over 5,000 cases
SK reports 75 deaths
Spain reports 289 deaths
Germany reports 11 deaths
International/General News
Many places experiencing a worsening epidemic are following the lead of countries including South Korea and instituting drive-through testing and high-throughput testing. Some tests (like the ones being used in Vietnam) can have a result in as soon as an hour, enabling people to be quickly cleared or quarantined. (This is super cool science! Yay, science!)
Johns Hopkins University is putting on a webinar on Tuesday, 3/17. If you are interested, you can sign up/check it out here: https://www.jhsph.edu/events/2020/covid-19/
South Koreaâs epidemic is currently being driven by a fringe religious group, which represents approximately 60% of all cases.
Italyâs health system is overwhelmed, which is likely why their case-fatality rate is so high. Doctors, nurses, respiratory techs, first responders, lab personnel, and everyone else involved in hospitals/health care are working their butts off and doing some frankly heroic shit to help people.
Singapore has instituted strict travel restrictions on visitors/transiting people from European countries, including Italy, France, Spain, and Germany; this is in addition to restrictions on visitors from Iran, China, and South Korea.
Some doctors from Washington state, USAÂ (the ones seeing the most cases) are noticing that myocarditis (viral infection & inflammation of the heart) seems to be what kills patients, not the ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome) that requires ventilation. This is obviously in early stages and more research is ongoing.
The World Health Organization is setting up three hospitals with advanced respiratory care capabilities in Erbil, Baghdad, and Basra, Iraq.
Virology Corner
Todayâs topic: where did SARS-CoV-2 come from?
SARS-CoV-2 is whatâs known as a zoonotic virus. This means that it spread from animals to humans, and then gained the ability (through mutations) to pass from human to human.
We think that SARS-CoV-2 came from bats (Rhinopholus) or pangolins- which doesnât mean we need to blame bats or pangolins for this, theyâre innocent bystanders in the game of cat-and-mouse viruses and animals are constantly playing over evolutionary timescales. Also theyâre pretty ding dang cute.
(Not to get much more depressing, but here goes, as humans encroach on more and more land and as climate change progresses, more zoonoses will affect humans. Sorry to be a mega-bummer.)
Question Tuesday
Todayâs question comes from @adventurecalls! They ask (paraphrased because the ask got eaten): âIf I do get sick, how do I know when itâs ok to go back to doing stuff?â
This is a really good question, and one thatâs rapidly being worked out by public health people as we speak (whoa)!
In general, the thought is that once youâre totally recovered youâre not able to spread the virus, but thereâs not concrete data on this. The best we have is this recent study in the Lancet (https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30566-3/fulltext) which indicates that people who recover shed virus for 20 days from symptom onset, whereas those who die shed virus continuously until their death, a maximum course of 37 days.
I obviously canât give individual medical advice, which this is not, but the guidance from the WHO is excellent in general, and I will keep readers posted when thereâs more information.
If you have questions, ask them and theyâll appear here in the next issue of corona extra!
Regional News (if you want somewhere added just let me know. Donât be shy!! I highly recommend you just skip to your area if you donât wanna be overwhelmed.)
Canada: last updated 9:00 AM EST 3/15/20
Total cases: 249 confirmed (+5), 4 presumed (-1), 1 death (3/9/20, no change)
All current cases had symptoms starting between 1/17/20 and 3/9/20
One of these cases is the PMâs wife (mild case); the couple are in quarantine for 14 days now. This is not expected to affect Canadaâs management, but is definitely a reminder that being a political leader does not grant one immunity to COVID-19.
12% of cases have required hospitalization
79% of cases are in travellers, and a further 8% in their close contacts
Affected provinces include (both confirmed and presumptive cases): BC (73, +0), Alberta (39, -2), Saskatchewan (2, +0), Manitoba (4, +0), Ontario (103, +2), Quebec (24, +3), Newfoundland and Labrador (1) New Brunswick (2, +0), and PEI (1).
Newly affected provinces include: Newfoundland and Labrador
4 cases in repatriated travellers
The Netherlands
I do not speak Dutch so please correct me if Iâve fucked something up royally
1135 confirmed cases, 20 deaths
176 new cases, 8 new deaths
Provinces (?) affected include: Drenthe (15), Flevoland (19), Friesland (10), Gelderland (100), Groningen (9), Limburg (129), North Brabant (446), North Holland (90), Overijssel (28), Utrecht (109), South Holland (110), and Zeeland (12).
I think this is all of them based on a quick Wikipedia investigation?
Interestingly they tested a bunch of people who work in a hospital and found a pretty high (4%) rate of asymptomatic infection. This seems like bad news (are these people spreading, etc) but itâs actually pretty good news because it means the mortality rate is lower than we think. Iâll update here as I find out more, which is hampered by my inability to speak Dutch.
New Zealand
8 confirmed cases, 2 probable cases
2 new cases, one of which was diagnosed in Australia
Both patients were on international flights and there is extensive contact tracing underway
2 patients have required hospitalization but both have been discharged
6700 people have completed self-isolation, 3015 people continue to be isolated
These people all deserve a medal, thank you for protecting your communities!
Golden Princess cruise berthed in Akaroa has one confirmed and two potential cases. The ship is quarantined now.
NorwayÂ
1077 cases, 166 of which are new
I still donât speak Norwegian so if I screwed up lemme know
Only 1 confirmed death, possibly one more to be confirmed 3/16 but only official numbers go here
Also possible that itâs been confirmed and I donât know because I donât speak Norwegian
287 cases are due to community transmission, 710 acquired outside of Norway, the rest are undetermined
Locations where people became infected include Austria (491), Italy (144), Switzerland (14), UK (12), Spain (9), France (8), USA (7), Iran (5), China (1), Hong Kong (1), other countries with more than 3 cases (80), and other countries with less than 3 cases (20).
Breakdown of cases by area: Agder (55, +3), Innlandet (72, +16), Møre og Romsdal (20, +4), Nordland (8, +0), Oslo (281, +59), Rogaland (127, +9), Troms og Finnmark (20, +4), Trøndelag (50, +4), Vestfold og Telemark (48, +9), Vestland (118, +9), and Viken (278, +47)
Good job Nordland! No new cases today! :D
United Kingdom in general: this is pretty rough because apparently the public health strategy coming from Boris is âherd immunityâ aka let everyone get sick and then theyâll all be immune, since the only other way to get herd immunity is a vaccine thatâŚ..we donât have yet. Boris does not understand how to medicine.Â
Fuck you, Boris.
1372 total cases (+20%), 232 are new today
35 total deaths, 14 new today
England
1099 total cases
Affected NHS regions are as follows: London (407), South East (175), Midlands (94), North East and Yorkshire (91), North West (76), East of England (71), and South West (61).
Deaths are not being reported by the PHS but I will do my best to split these out in the next few editions using news reports etc
Scotland
153 cases total and 1 death
Affected health boards are as follows: Ayrshire and Arran (6), Borders (7), Fife (7), Forth Valley (10), Grampian (12), Greater Glasgow and Clyde (39), Highland (2), Lanarkshire (16), Lothian (28), Shetland (11), and Tayside (15).
I donât know if this is all of the health  boards in Scotland but it sure is the ones that have confirmed covid19.
Wales
94 cases, 34 new
Welsh authorities are now recommending that anyone who develops a persistent cough and/or fever self-isolate, and only call 111 if they are unable to cope with their symptoms at home
Affected areas include: Blaenau Gwent County (3, +2), Bridgend County (1, +0), Caerphilly County (11, +4), Carmarthenshire County (7, +3), City & County of Swansea (18, +4), City of Cardiff (8, +3), Conwy County (1, +0), Flintshire County (1, +0), Isle of Anglesey (1, +0), Monmouthshire County (5, +1), Neath Port Talbot (11, +0), Newport City (5, +3), Pembrokeshire (2, +0), Powys County (5, +0), and Wrexham County (1, +0).
Newly affected areas include: Ceredigion County (1), Rhondda Cynon Taf County (2), Torfaen County (2), and Vale of Glamorgan (1).
Northern Ireland
45 cases, 11 new
This is all the data I have, sorry
This may actually be a thing that makes northern/southern Ireland cooperate, which is a small spark of hope in the raging dumpster fire that is this pandemic (I hyperbolize, but only slightly)
US in general: All this info is from the state & county health departments unless I say otherwise. The national response is a trash fire (but maybe hopefully improving this week??) CDC information is updated weekdays; total US cases are from 3/13 at 4 PM
1629 total cases, 41 deaths (2.5% mortality rate), with 46 states and DC reporting cases.
CDC is now recommending all in person gatherings with more than 50 people be canceled for the next 8 weeks. This sucks for me personally and probably a lot of you all too. Hang in there.
California: updated around 10 AM PST, 3/15/20
The state dept of health is not providing a ton of info right now, so all of this is coming from county health departments, which are doing really excellent work btw. Love local public health departments <3
My official take is that the higher level government orgs in the US are muzzled from above and therefore totally shitting the bed and the county-level public health officials are really stepping up to the plate
Total cases not including the ones at Miramar (discussed below): 363, with 4 total deaths
Affected counties include: Alameda (7), Calaveras (2), Contra Costa (29), Fresno (2), Humboldt (1 - recovered), Imperial (2), Los Angeles (53, +11), Madera (1), Marin (5), Orange (14), Placer (8), Riverside (10), Sacramento (29) San Benito (3 - 2 recovered), San Diego (8), San Francisco (28), San Joaquin (8), San Luis Obispo (1), San Mateo (32), Santa Clara (91), Santa Cruz (7), Shasta (1), Solano (6), Sonoma (4), Stanislaus (2), Tulare (2), Ventura (5), Yolo (2)
San Diego: My numbers are not gonna include the federal quarantine situations at Miramar (for repatriated people and the Diamond Princess passengers) because thatâs what makes sense right now regarding community transmission. If this changes I will say so.
Unaffected counties include: Alpine, Amador, Butte, Colusa, Del Norte, El Dorado, Glenn, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Lake, Lassen, Mariposa, Mendocino, Merced, Modoc, Mono, Monterey, Napa, Nevada, Plumas, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, Sierra, Siskiyou, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Tuolumne, Yuba
Counties with confirmed community transmission include: Los Angeles, Marin, Orange, Riverside, San Joaquin, Santa Clara, Sonoma
Newly affected counties include San Luis Obispo (3/14)
Colorado - last updated 3/14 at 3 PM
Colorado Springs Bridge Center is under an advisory for possible exposure
Drive-up testing is available now, in Denver and Lowry and possibly other places
1 death, 3/13/20, in El Paso County, a female in her 80s
Community spread has been confirmed
101 confirmed cases, 1 death

Todayâs Hot Tips
Make sure you have ibuprofen and tylenol/acetaminophen/APAP/paracetamol at home before you get sick. This isnât just covid advice, this is life advice in general. (Obvs, ask your doctor about whatâs safe to take if you have chronic health conditions etc but this is a general recommendation, not medical advice. As I said, life advice.)
As far as I know, ibuprofen and tylenol are ok, but research may change this. Current research indicates that steroids, which are used in other severe respiratory conditions, may make COVID-19 associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) worse. More on this later.
It still canât hurt to have some tylenol around, though, ya know?
Hand Washing Song of the Day
If you hate singing happy birthday while you wash your hands, I certainly do, try Good as Hell by Lizzo instead!
Sing from âI do my hair tossâ to âIf he donât love you anymoreâ at minimum (if youâre like me and canât leave a lyric unfinished, go ahead and dry your hands while making your brain happy.) to follow CDC handwashing guidelines! Use soap and water for maximum virus-murdering.

About this newsletter
Iâm Emily, Iâm a 4th year med student w/ a degree in molecular biology. I wrote this because Iâm an infectious disease and epidemiology nerd and also all my friends have questions & anxiety. Hi internet!
All this info is sourced from regional & national public health organizations, plus the WHO. Itâs as up to date as humanly possible. Iâve been beaming information about this outbreak directly into my brain 24/7 but I still miss stuff. Please let me know if I miss something!
Most public health departments stop updating their information around 4-5 PM local time on weekdays. That means that the earliest this will come out is around 6 PM Pacific time on weekdays going forward. On weekends things update more sporadically and earlier, so who knows what Iâll do then, but Iâll do my best.
Thank you to @marywhal for the excellent title!

Part 40: here
...
LEWIS POV
Lewis comes to welcome the dark interludes which provide a brief reprieve from the parade of fake-Arthur-memories. The cold, empty silence is preferable to the increasingly dour scenes depicting the day-to-day struggles of fake-Arthur and fake-Vivi as they fail at dealing with fake-Lewisâs death. Not that either of them know about his death. Arthur doesnât remember the cliff or the body snatcher, thinking fake-Lewis is alive and lost somewhere. Vivi doesnât remember him at all. Heâs been erased completely from her mind, leaving her confused and Arthur distraught. Lewis has no idea how long heâs spent watching them struggle. The scenes come and go at varying lengths and changing levels of detail.  He must have lived through several weeksâ worth of fake-memories now. Months of Arthurâs life flit by, broken up into chunks.Â
...
A conversation with Vivi, trying and failing to convince her that the other-Lewis had existed at all.
âLewisâŚyou know, Lewis. Please remember.â
âIâm sorry, I blanked out for a second thereâŚwhat were you saying?âÂ
âNothing. Itâs nothingâŚâ
âOh shitâŚI was...how long was I out for this time?â
âAn hour...You were gone for an hour.â
 âIâm sorry Arthur.âÂ
âDonât worry about it. Was my faultâŚMentioned something I shouldnât have.â
Fights with Lance when the older man attempts to intervene and stop Arthurâs increasingly destructive behaviour. Â
âThis behaviour isnât healthy.â
âWhat am I supposed to do!â
âMaybe, stop and actually think about thisâŚâÂ
âLewis is out there somewhere, and you want me to just give up!â
Hours spend online and in police stations trying to convince people to look for the other-Lewis.Â
âKid. Youâre friend is listed as missing. We have alerts out in the neighbouring states and so far thereâs been no word. Search parties, caving experts, were combing those old mine shafts for six days after you came in. There was nothing there.â
âSomething happened there...something bad...if you would just...â
âThe cave is just a regular cave. Those old mines are old mines. Nothing weird or spooky about them, just very easy to get lost in. Thereâs nothing more to be done so go home, eat a hot meal, get some sleep. If your friend shows up youâll be one of the first to know. âÂ
...
Itâs like watching a highlight real, only nothing about these memories is a highlight. Heâs almost sure the fake-memories are selected and purposefully skewed towards negative experiences. Surely, even if this were real-itâs not real, it canât be real-Arthurâs life wouldnât be this bad without Lewis there. Â
When the darkness falls away, transitioning into another memory, Lewis wants to yell out in frustration.
âŚ
âŚ
âŚ
Lewisâs eyes open of their own accord and heâs looking out at the world, experiencing life from his friendâs perspective.
âŚ
âŚ
This memory starts with Arthur staring as a door handle, hesitating to pull it open. Lewis recognises it of course, heâs seen this door serval times, scattered in amongst the most recent lot of fake-memories. Itâs the door to Vivi and Arthurâs apartment in Milton, faded green in colour and rusted around the hinges.
Arthur lets out a long breath which tranistions into a yawn, fiddling around with a set of keys with his one, good arm. Lewis tries not to worry when his friend drops the keys to the ground, hand slightly shakier than usual. Arthur probably hasnât been sleeping properly. Not-sleeping is a running theme for this fake-memory-Arthur.
When the door does finally swing open, it is to reveal an irate Vivi. She is blocking the flatâs narrow entryway, her hands on her hips, expression creased into a scowl.
âIn what universe does âIâll be back earlyâ mean 11:30 pm?â
Arthur winces. Lewis canât see his expression but his friend is probably grimacing. Most memories that feature both Vivi and Arthur involved an argument of some sort. Another form of torture for him no doubt. Seeing them struggle to come to terms with his disappearance was always a painful viewing experience. Lewis braces himself for some sort of emotionally charged argument, wishing he had the power to intervein. These fake-memories are some of the hardest to sit through.
âA lot of the guys in the lab work late hours.â
Vivi looks unimpressed, âAnd I suppose theyâre all recovering from a recent amputation as well are they?â
âItâs been four months âŚItâs healed plenty.â
Lewis feels the echo sensation of pain as Arthur drops his bag to the floor, freeing up his remaining arm. Arthur lying to Vivi about his wellbeing is another common theme in these fake-memories. Vivi knows it too, Lewis can already see the tension in her shoulders.
âIâm fine,â Arthur tries to reassure, skirting around Vivi, avoiding eye contact. âThe prototype for the new arm is almost done, weâre just waiting on the guys in programming to double-check some of the codingâŚ.â
âThis new arm isnât going to be worth much if youâre too exhausted to do anything with it.â Vivi interrupts angrily, following Arthur as he slinks past the small kitchen towards bedrooms at the back of the apartment. Â
Lewis feels her grabs the back of Arthurâs shirts, pulling the other up short.
âI said Iâm finâŚ.wait.â
Vivi drags Arthur to the narrow kitchen bench just big enough to fit two bar-chairs, ignoring his objections.
âSit.â She orders, stopping over to the frig, pulling out a bowl and thrusting it into the microwave. The hum of the microwave makes the following quiet twice as uncomfortable. Even Lewis feels it.
Arthur clears his throat to speak and is cut off when the microwave lets off a loud ping.
Vivi all but slams the streaming bowl down in front of Arthur.
âYou really donât have toâŚâ Arthur tries.
âOh yeah? What did you eat for dinner?â
Silence.
âLunch?â
ââŚâ
âBecause I only know you ate breakfast because I was there for it.â
More silence hangs between them. Â
âEat.â She instructs and glares until Arthur picks up the spoon. Lewis can feel Arthur shift in awkward discomfort as he starts eating. After living through so many of these fake-memories, Lewis is becoming an Arthur body language expert.Â
âHow was work?â Arthur breaks the silence, glancing at Vivi. She is sitting with her arms crossed, still upset, still annoyed. Lewis can read the worry fuelling her frustration clear as day.Â
Her expression clears as she deliberately puts the issue of Arthur arriving late to one side, Work was good. Duet is a real character but theyâre nice and super knowledgeable when it comes to the occult and other supernatural stuff. Theyâre helping me research memory-related curses and whatnot. The first person, apart from you, who doesnât think Iâm crazy. So thatâs a plus.â
âWhen my arm is fixed, we can hit the road and follow up on any leads you hear,â Arthur murmurs between mouthfuls and Lewis wishes he could face-palm because that is the exact wrong thing to say. Not for the first time, Lewis longs to be physically present so he can smooth over the sudden tension which spikes in the room.  âOr we could go before thatâŚI meanâŚI donât really need two arms.â
âItâs not urgent or anything,â Vivi responds with the forced cheer of someone holding back on speaking their mind. âI bleary notice that the memories are gone most days. Your arm is more important.â
âDonât say that,â Arthur stops eating to frown.
âDonât say what? That Iâm fine postponing the search for my memories for however long it takes you to get better?â
âThatâs notâŚwhat I mean is that your memories are important.â
Viviâs expression hardens, becoming terse, âNot more important than your health.â
Arthur tenses.
âMy missing memories can wait,â She insists. âIâve been doing fine without them. Especially now we live here and not in Tempo. I havenât had a blackout since we moved.â
âItâs not just thatâŚâ Arthur retorts, frustrated.
âThen what.â Vivi snaps, almost yelling now, âDo you hear yourself speak?  âI donât really need two arms,ââŚare you kidding me!  What could possibly be more important than your health.â
âYou know I canât tell you.â
Vivi lets out a long, frustrated breath, standing. âYou promised, when we moved closer to the hospital labs, you promised that youâd make an effort to actually look after yourself.â
Arthur doesnât respond as Vivi continues.  âWhen your arm is finished. When you look like an actual person and not a zombie. When we donât have to have this conversation every day. Then weâll go searching.â
The bar stool squeaks on the floor as Vivi pushes it back, âIâm going to bed. Iâve got work early tomorrow. You should sleep as wellâŚwhen youâve finished.â
A long silence stretches between his two friends, all the heat gone from the argument. Lewis canât see Vivi anymore, Arthurâs vision is now fixed on his spoon which is resting on the lip of the bowl.
âI would tell you everythingâŚif I couldâŚâ Arthur doesnât look up. His voice is strained.
Vivi pauses in the doorway. âI know.â She sounds tired. Lewisâs heart aches. âThat doesnât change anything.âÂ
Arthur flinches.
A sigh and Vivi adds, âI better not find you awake in an hour because Iâm going to set my alarm to check.â
âWhat?â Arthur finally looks up. âYou canât do that.â
âI can and will.â
ââŚbut you just said you have work in the morning.â
âIf youâre not gonna sleep then Iâm not gonna sleep.â
âButâŚ.â
âJust the way itâs gotta be apparently,â Vivi finishes, strolling out of the room, leaving Arthur- and, through him, Lewis- to stare after her.
Arthur slumps, âGodâŚdamnitâŚâ rubbing his eyes. Thereâs no anger to the word.
No matter how many times heâs seen Arthur and Vivi argue in the weeks and months following his counterpartâs death, it never got any easier.  They were both too stubborn for their own good. Arthurâs got a quiet, methodical stubbornness about him while Vivi is loud and abrasive. Mix that with emotional stress and an obvious concern for one another and the result was a whole load of tension. Lewis knows Arthur has low self-esteem and tendency to beat himself up and blame himself for stuff that definitely wasnât his fault, but heâs never seen him this bad. It never seemed like that big a deal when both him and Vivi had been around to help. Vivi too, heâs never see her so stressed and angry at seemingly everything. Or maybe Lewis doesnât know Vivi or Arthur as well as he thought he did.Â
There is movement in the corner of the room and Lewis notices Mystery for the first time. The not-a-dog had been lying in the corner.
âWhat.â
Mystery just cocks his head to the side.
âI know you can understand me,â Arthur mutters, shifting with discomfort. Mystery doesnât speak or do much of anything, trotting out of the room after Vivi. Not too surprising. Another trend in these illusions was that Mystery tended to just sit and watch.
Sometimes, Lewis wonders if he just imagined the whole âgiant foxâ thing. His memories for the car park confrontation are fuzzy, heâd been in a lot of pain at the time and probably suffering a bit of blood loss. Heâs lived through so many of these memories that the real would seams so far away. Then he remembers those shinning teeth biting into him, and very real physical pain. That was real.Â
The real world was still out there.Â
None of these memories were real. He had almost forgotten.Â
âIâm not crazy,â Arthur murmurs, eyeing the dog uneasily before turning back to finish whatâs left in his bowl. Lewis canât read Arthurâs thoughts, but he suspects that his friend might be having similar doubts about Mysteryâs true identity as well.
âIâll find you, LewisâŚâ
For a second, Lewis thinks Arthur is addressing him directly before remembering that thatâs impossible. This fake-memory-Arthur is addressing the ghost of a best friend he doesnât know is dead. Lewis is only a passenger, watching life through Arthurâs eyes, invisible and stranded.
âIâll find you âŚno matter what it takes. Iâll find you. And everything will go back to normalâŚâ
âŚ
âŚ
âŚ
The memory fades, darkening and Lewis is once again back in the dark.
...
...
...
âDAMNIT!â
He slams both fists into the ground, watching the darkness ripple under the impact. His yell doesnât echo, swallowed by the nothing.
âDamnitâŚDAMNITâŚDAMN IT ALL!â
Feelings of frustration and anger smother his hurt and sorrow. He growls, smashing his fist into the ground again. If this were the real world, heâd have to worry about bruising his knuckles or breaking his fingers. The void offers little in the way of resistance.Â
âI GET IT, ALL RIGHT! Theyâre miserableâŚtheyâre strugglingâŚI get the point!â
Nothing responds to his shouting. Heâs alone. He shouts again, screaming into the void. Heâs stopped questioning the motive behind what he was seeing long ago. They were illusions masquerading as his friendâs memories. Designed to hurt him as much as you can hurt a person without touching them.
âJust stop already!â He rages. Nothing responds.
Fury, white-hot, is better than the creeping sadness threatening to drown him. Sure, being angry about things had never worked well for him in the past. Heâd been a very angry child and it was only thanks to his adopted patents and then Vivi and Arthur that heâd put the unpleasant emotion behind him.
None of that mattered here. Here, in the dark, the anger is his only defence against the green bastardâs torture.
Lewis regrets not punching the asshole when he had the chance. He wishes heâd done a lot of things differently. Lewis continues yelling right up until the dark once again fades into another memory.
..
NOTE: Resurrecting this fic in anticipation for a possible new video maybe? One can only dream. Sorry if it reads slightly different, iâm a bit rusty. Â

Thanks for the request, anon! â¤ď¸â¤ď¸ sorry this took me so long to get to, hope youâre still around!
Tornado of Terror: Iâve said in a previous hc that she sleep-levitates and wakes up in the weirdest places. So, sheâd probably spend 10 straight minutes prying herself out of her bathtub or some shit with hella cramps. After that, sheâd spam Fubuki over text message, asking her how to make a cup of coffee for the 57th time, then manage to burn it anyway, and finally go to work salty as fuck.
Silverfang: Wakes up at the crack of dawn, mediates next to a waterfall or some shit, broods over Garou, and makes himself a nice breakfast with a cup of tea. After that, he drags Charankoâs ass up the mountain to do some training, meditate some more, drink more tea, and around then itâs gonna be like 9 AM, so heâd probably just go the fuck back to sleep for a quick nap before actually going to work. Look, heâs old. Let him vibe.
Atomic Samurai: Also wakes the fuck up at the crack of dawn and proceeds to freeload a breakfast off of Iaian, wash it down with some alcohol at 6 in the AM, and complain about the weather. Then, heâd probably run over some sorta training routine with his disciples before doing group meditation and finally, finish it off with another drink. His tolerance is so damn high at this point. He shows up to work while pretending he wasnât ten seconds away from getting wasted that morning.
Child Emperor: Wakes up rather early (if he even slept at all), runs diagnostics on all of his machinery, does tests on his latest weapons, takes 7 decontamination showers, and then makes himself a hearty breakfast consisting of Froot Loops and choccy milk. He shows up to work early and energized, running solely on his 87th lollipop and the single shot of espresso he had that morning. If itâs a weekday, heâd wait off on going to Association headquarters and teach a few classes at the local university instead. Heâd then go to work in the middle of the day, grading papers and dying internally at the dumb shit his students say. He keeps a mental tally of how many people forget to write their names on their assignments. Heâs suffering.
Metal Knight: Upon slapping the shit out of his alarm clock, he rolls out of bed and commands one of his bitchbots to make a Michelin-Star quality breakfast for him, then proceeds to stalk to the bathroom. He doesnât shave or shower. He just takes a 45-minute shit because heâs forced himself to go to the bathroom once a day to âsave timeâ when it, in fact, does not save time. After that, he takes a decontamination shower before entering his lab (also another 45 minutes because heâd spend the whole time jeâ nevermind) and doesnât show up to work at all because heâs a little bitchboy hellbent on building Skynet in his momâs basement.
King: Wakes up, cries, plays video games, cries some more, eats some cereal, takes a shower, cries, calls Saitama over, plays video games, Saitama leaves, cries. Then, heâll show up to work for a single meeting at 4 PM just so everyone knows he isnât dead, have an anxiety attack, go home, and then cry (while having another anxiety attack). After that, heâll play video games until 3 AM. Rinse and repeat.
Zombieman: Heâll wake up at 3 AM and then sarcastically open his blinds like âoh wow, what a beautiful morningâ. Heâll make himself a hearty breakfast consisting of leftovers, some protein pills, and half a pack of cigarettes. Next, heâll shower, shave, and do some routine vigilante detective work out in the town before coming back home just as the sun is beginning to rise. After that, heâll take a thirty second nap and walk his ass to work (because his car has been in the shop for like, seven years) so he can vibe for 3 hours before throwing in the towel and isolating himself for the remainder 18 hours of the day because depression.
Drive Knight: he sleeps plugged into the wall like a Samsung. Either that, or heâs solar-powered.... or maybe he runs on AAAs. I donât know, but his ass ainât waking up like everyone else. Heâd power on, do some routine checkups on his laboratory or whatever the fuck heâs got going on, and then show up to work for 3 seconds only to dip the fuck back out and go poach some endangered monster species for his collection or some shit. Look, heâs a robot.
Pig God: wakes up at 10 AM like a king and eats a small breakfast consisting of three rotisserie chickens, a whole pot of rice, 57 eggs, and a cool glass of milk (because calcium is important, kids). Heâd spend 4 hours on the internet before he gets hungry and decides to go outside, stopping to casually devour an entire species of demon-threat monsters in the middle of the street while simultaneously traumatizing every single child living in a 3-mile radius in the process of doing so. After that, heâd do some hero work for like 30 minutes (and somehow eat like, 200 living things in that timeframe), go back home, and then indulge himself in a 17-hour food coma. Heâs earned it.
Superalloy Darkshine: Homie wakes up at 5 AM, works out for two hours, takes a shower, and eats a breakfast big enough to feed a small family of 19. After terrorizing every health expert in the country with his buckwild diet (ironic considering Pig God exists), he hits up his bro Tanktop Master for another 2-hour workout. He then proceeds to take 3 seconds getting dressed in his hero uniform because itâs literally just a thong, and goes to work for a full 8 hours because heâs a good boi who takes his job seriously and genuinely wants to make the world a better place. :)
Watchdog Man: wakes up, pisses on a fire hydrant, eats dog kibble, sits on his pedestal in city Q, and then gets dressed.
Flashy Flash: wakes up in a forest somewhere because heâs probably homeless. The local birds flock around him and sing a morning song. He feeds a baby deer like a Disney princess. Then, he bathes in a waterfall and spends two hours doing his hair. After that, he buys himself a fucking bagel and takes his ass to work smelling like the inside of a Cabellaâs. He vibes at HQ for like, 30 minutes, before traveling 500 miles away on his 57th quest for revenge and ends up breaking a record for âmost homicides committed by a heroâ on the way there.
Genos: wakes up, makes breakfast for Saitama, takes a shower, and spends half an hour doing chores while Saitama bums around with a yolk stain on his pajamas. Then, heâd hit up the professor for any news about upgrades, and go on about his day handing out justice as he sees fit until Saitama suddenly gets the urge to go buy some cabbage. Itâll be another 2 hours of walking around the inside of a grocery store while holding 2 grams of food (because itâs all Saitama could afford, broke ass) before he actually goes to hero HQ for a single meeting (while Saitama tags along), and then slaughter 87 monsters on his way home.
Metal Bat: wakes up at 6 AM because it takes him 8 years to do his hair. Heâd wake up Zenko about an hour later and tell her to get ready for school while he hauls ass downstairs to make breakfast (burnt toast and 8 Flinstone vitamins). They walk to Zenkoâs school together. He takes ten minutes to shower her with love, and then he turns back around to walk to his own school only to show up like, 45-minutes late to his first class. He only attends hero meetings on weekends because A. Homework and B. He doesnât give enough of a shit to juggle official hero business and school in the same day (unless it consists of a monster/criminal [or 12] in need of a beating).
Tanktop Master: same as Superalloy. He wakes up at dawn, works out, eats enough to feed a small army, and then calls his actual army over for a meeting. He and the gang discuss ways to better represent the Tanktop ideology over tea, while also sharing workout tips and just having a good time together in general. Around then itâll probably be 8 or 9 AM, so heâd join Superalloy at Hero HQ and do hero work for the rest of the day alongside his homies. Heâs living the life, honestly.
Puri-Puri Prisoner: heâs in prison so heâd wake up at 8 AM on the clock every day, eat his nasty-ass breakfast (although, Iâve said in a previous headcanon that he gets special meals prepared for him on account of being a literal superhero, but I digress), and then he works out in the courtyard for a good hour before going to work in the cafeteria for 3 bucks a day (or the yen equivalent). During visiting hours, he and his boyfriend are inseparable. Theyâd make some crafts together, gossip, and just hang out. If thereâs a threat in the area, Puri will waste no time busting himself out and hugging that shit to death. A true icon.
Amai Mask: he either wakes up at 10 AM or 2 PM every day, thereâs no in-between. Heâd spend his morning doing every self-care routine under the sun: taking a warm bath, doing a face mask, eating a good breakfast (prepared by his own personal chef, of course), listening to an audio book, you name it. If he has a concert that night, heâd spend the entire day surrounded by people as he gets ready/rehearses/prepares. If not, heâll just patrol the streets, handing out autographs and some slices of justice. He wouldnât really show up to any meetings or do official hero business at HQ unless heâs in the mood to cuss out Sekingar and Sitch over some stupid shit or insert himself in S-Class business.
Iaian: wakes up earlier than any of the other disciples and Atomic Samurai because heâs like, responsible or whatever. He meditates, showers, does his own personal routine, and then kicks everyone out of bed for breakfast like an angry suburban mom. After that, heâd participate in everyoneâs routine training, and then take his ass to work while showing up to every meeting at HQ (sometimes tagging along with Kami) because heâs a good boi and he has no problem engaging in business. :)
Okamaitachi: She sometimes wakes up with Iaian, but sleeps in most of the time because she needs her beauty rest, obviously. After breakfast and participating in everyoneâs training routine, sheâd do her hair/makeup and go do her own hero work the majority of the time. Sheâd sometimes tag along with Iaian, but she prefers to go on her own every so often. If she has some extra time before breakfast, sheâll also do a face mask or catch up on her favorite soap operas.
Bushidrill: this motherfucker sleeps like a log and Iaian wants to kill him for it. He wakes up like, 2 seconds before breakfast and hasnât shaven in a month. Still, somehow, he manages to get ready in time for training without Kami trying to assault him for being a doofus.
Fubuki: She wakes up hella early and texts her herd of hooligans the daily plan before dealing with Tatsumakiâs shit over the phone. Then, she showers, does her hair, and takes fifteen minutes to get her makeup done right. It doesnât take her long to plan out her outfit because she has like, 87 black dresses. After an actual hearty breakfast (unlike the rest of these clowns) that she makes herself, she meets up with the blizzard group to discuss business and engage in hero work together as a â¨teamâ¨. She never gets asked to participate in official business by HQ because Tatsumaki strictly forbids it.
Saitama: he brushes his hair and sits on his ass all day.
Mumen Rider: wakes up at dawn, feeds the cats outside, eats a good-ass breakfast (despite being poor, because heâs actually really good at budgeting), and goes out for a nice, morning patrol. Heâll also call his mom and make sure sheâs having a good time because thatâs important. If itâs not a busy day, heâll go to the gym and treat himself to some time at the park afterwards. If thereâs monsters all about, heâll spend the rest of the day in the hospital after getting his shit rocked for the 300th time that week. Theyâve basically got a bed reserved for him at this point. Heâs so pure but so, so selfless. And a little dumb. But mostly selfless.

9:00 PM [ Blondie ] Hey, Tim?
9:15 PM [ Blondie ] How would you feel about spending Christmas with me? Well, me spending Christmas with you⌠because Iâm kind of standing in Miami InternationalâŚ
I sent the texts and took a few seconds to stop and pull myself together. To locate some kind of map or information center for the airport while I collected myself because if I were being totally honest with myself, this was a spur of the moment decision brought on by a recent wave of nostalgia and longing. I hadnât actually⌠Stopped to consider that Tim might be involved with someone or have plans already. Or any of the thousand other possibilities that chose just that exact moment to actually occur to me.
Taking a few shaky breaths, I tried to shove all these sudden doubts and worries out of my head. If I found out he was happy and with someone else, Iâd simply shelve what I came all this way to actually tell him at last. Iâd just catch up with my best friend and spend a few days away from the freezing cold of New York.
With an exit strategy in place, I felt better. A little more confident. I spotted a kiosk that had a map of the airport in itâs entirety and I wandered over, locating where I was and where I needed to go and as I did that, my stomach fluttered a little. I was nervous and excited, all in the same time. This was.. Huge for me.
And sadly, this was something I shouldâve done before he left New York a few years ago, I just hadnât been able to bring myself to do it then. I knew Tim too well. If he felt the same, he never wouldâve gotten away. Heâd have stayed. Kept working hours he didnât like, in a field he didnât care for. Or heâd have wound up shelving his own dream entirely and simply done as his father suggested and taken over the family business.
I couldnât let it happen.
As I wandered down to baggage claim, I walked myself through my half-formed plan. And I glanced at my phone every few seconds. By the time I was standing in the back of a long line at baggage claim, tapping my foot and staring at the baggage carousel impatiently for my bags, Iâd sort of started to convince myself that what I was about to do was a dumb idea. And that I shouldnât have come all this way without making contact first.
And lastly, that Tim Speedle wasnât going to text me back.
So when my cell phone went off in my hand, I jumped a little and nearly dropped it on the tile flooring. I half expected the text to be from my own mother, the driving force behind my spontaneous decision, but to my surprise, it wasnât.
XXX
âHey, Speed?â
Tim Speed looked up from the evidence heâd been looking over for the better part of two hours now. Eric nodded to the desk, where Timâs phone sat, screen lit up. âYou got a text, man.â Eric stepped into the room as he said it, grabbing the phone off the desk, intending to take it over to the part of the lab Tim was standing in.
His eyes caught on the name and he wiggled his brows at his best friend in teasing. âWhoâs Blondie, Speed?â
Timâs head snapped up and he hurried over, practically snatching the phone from Ericâs hand as he answered with a shrug, âA friend from home. I wonder why sheâs textin now? We havenât talked in a long time, itâs been years..â Tim trailed off, unlocking his phone, brown eyes darting over the texts as a soft smirk played at his mouth, tugging the corners upward.Â
Eric leaned against the wall, arms folded over his chest. âFriends donât make you smile like a goofball. Start talkin, Speed.â
Tim shrugged and explained the whole thing, adding at the end, âThat one time we were talking about missed chances and regrets.. Thatâs her.â
âThe blonde from that picture on your fridge? Damn.â Eric let out a low whistle. âStill say I donât see why you didnât just come clean and tell her how you really felt before you left town.â
âI tried, Delko. Everybodyâs not smooth like you.â
âLiterally all you had to do, Speed, was open your damn mouth. Itâs bullshit, you just copped out.â Eric shrugged and smirked at Tim as he said it, especially when he saw that his words had actually gotten a rise out of his best friend. He eyed the phone in Timâs hand and nodded to it. âWell? You answerin?â
âHell yeah, when you remove your nosy ass from my lab, Delko.â
âDamn grouch. Hey, Tim?. Donât think. Just act. Do somethin about this, yeah? You shouldâve a long time ago. Youâre getting a chance here, man.. take it.â Eric advised before finally leaving the lab, chuckling to himself as he went.
Tim shut the door behind his friend and laughed, leaning himself against the closed door as he spent the next five and a half minutes trying to figure out exactly how the hell to respond.
His heart was racing. One, heâd never thought sheâd come to Miami and he found himself wondering why she had now. Two, just seeing her name show up on his phone bought it all rushing back. With more urgency.
10:30 PM [ Speed ] Youâre in Miami.. Right now?
10:35 PM [ Speed ] Iâm on my way. I just came by the lab to look over some stuff. Stay at the airport, okay? Iâll pick you up. Weâll grab some food or something.
He debated heavily on sending a third text, telling her he missed her, among other things, but he put it off. After all, he didnât even know if she was here alone⌠Or why she was here to begin with.
,, but sheâs here man. That really should be all that matters. Especially when you were just thinking about her, not even two days ago.â he thought to himself as he slipped on the oversized leather jacket heâd discarded upon entering the lab earlier. After shutting off the lights and locking the door behind him, he hurried out to the parking garage to where heâd parked the Ducati hours before. And the entire time, he couldnât stop the happy smirk that came.
Nothing mattered but getting to her. Seeing her again.
XXX
My cell phone went off again. By this point, Iâd had enough time to wrap my head around Tim being on his way to pick me up. Seeing him again after all this time. I was just coming back up the escalator to the waiting area to find a seat. I stopped a few feet away from the escalator and dug around, finding my phone.
11:00 PM [ Speed ] I think I see you.
11:03 PM [ Speed ] Turn around.
I was just finishing the last text as All I Want For Christmas Is You began to play over the speakers throughout the airport terminal and I felt his hand on my shoulder, turning me around to face him.
And seeing him again after all this time, something in me just snapped. As opposed to a friendly hug hello, I was climbing into his arms, my legs wrapping around his waist. Those calloused hands settled on my lower back, squeezing as he chuckled. My fingers carded through his hair and the wrapping around the roses in his hands crinkled. The roses settled on the floor and when my body rubbed against his, a quiet groan escaped in the slim margin of space that remained between our mouths for the moment. âMissed you so damn much.â we both mumbled the words at the same time as his mouth connected with mine, his lips latching onto my lower lip, nipping at it. My tongue slipped past his lips and his fingertips dug into my lower back as he chuckled into the kiss.
The current Christmas song playing, the crowd as it rushed past, everything pretty much fell away as the kiss deepened and one of his hands left itâs resting place against my lower back to tangle in my hair. Neither one of us wanted the kiss to break. Honestly, I think I may have been in a little shock that Iâd just⌠Reacted to seeing him like that, without a seconds thought or hesitation. But the kiss had to break so that we could catch our breaths and when it did, I climbed out of his arms, dragging the back of my hand over kiss swollen lips as Tim bent, retrieving the fallen bouquet of roses off of the tiled floor. âI,uhh..â he held them out and I gave a soft laugh, raising to tiptoe and clutching at the front of his leather jacket as I pressed my lips against his. âTheyâre beautiful⌠Any reason?â I questioned, only half in teasing because my breath caught in my throat as I wondered if heâd answer.
âBecause I shouldâve done.. Something.. About the way I feel a long time ago. Before I left, princess.â
My jaw dropped and he shifted his feet around, staring down at me nervously for a few seconds. âFunny you should mention it, Speed.. Thatâs kind of what bought me all the way hereâŚâ I gave him a soft and slightly teasing smile as I watched his jaw drop.Â
âWait.. Just to be clear⌠youâre saying you feel the same way, yeah?â his voice was husky against my mouth as he leaned down, pulling me against him for another kiss as I mumbled quietly, âMhm. All I wanted for Christmas was you. So here I am, Tim.â
He scooped me up and started to hurry towards the doors of the airport after grabbing my rolling suitcase and I laughed. âYou in a hurry?â
âYeah, see.. I kind of have this real hot date.â Tim teased as we stepped out into the cool Miami breeze...

Spend the day with me: first day edition!
Hello Friends,Â
Here in Noho, us Smithies are just finishing up our first week of classes! In honor of finishing this first week I wanted to share a day in my life post for the first day of classes. Before we start, I also wanted to show you all my desk setup since this is where all of the magic happens.Â
MORNING
8:00 am: Good morning! I am on the track team so my day started with a lift from 8:00 am to 8:45 am, this is something that I will be doing every Monday and Friday for the entire semester. It usually struggle with getting up, but since it was the first day, I had the first day jitters and didnât have much difficulty getting up.Â
9:00 am: After I finished lifting, I headed up the road to Tyler. Right now we are ordering all of our meals through GrubHub and you are able to grab and go once your meal is ready. I think I had to wait about 15 minutes for my breakfast to be done that day.Â
9:15 am: There are a few public spaces that we are allowed to eat in, but I usually eat in my room and listen to a podcast or talk to friends and family. One of my friends put me on to NPR's Life Kit podcast and now I am putting you all on! After my breakfast I also like to spend some time writing in my journal really about anything that comes to my mind. I try to do this frequently (not every single morning), but on the mornings that I feel like it.Â
9:35 am: After breaking my fast I took a nice shower and really took my time to get ready. Some mornings I rush, but I wanted to feel extra good for the first day.
10:55 am: Finally, the golden time! This is when my first class, PSY269: Categorization and Intergroup Behavior started! This is a psychology course and some of the main things we will be discussing will be prejudice, discrimination and other things related to how groups interact with each other. I really enjoyed our first class.Â
12:00 pm: Class finished a bit early this day, so after I went and grabbed lunch with my friends. I was able to snap a picture of my lunch and this meal is the Indian Curry Bowl from Lamont. I think they are pretty good and probably get this meal for lunch or dinner at least once a week. I usually like to have something to look at or listen to while I eat and on this day I watched Youtube and Facetimed a friend.
AFTERNOON
1:40 pm: After lunch, I started my next class, AFR117: History of African American People to 1960. I also loved this class. We reviewed the syllabus and did a small breakout room activity where we looked at a few quotes and discussed what we thought about them. I think the quote my group looked at was really important so I will share it here. Let me know if you have any thoughts about it or questions about what I thought. Here it is: âThis history continues to be mistaken by some as a burden when it should instead be recognized as a tremendous responsibility.â --Peniel Joseph
3:15 pm: I had my next class, PSY 202: Research Methods for Psychology. I have taken a class with this professor in the past and I really enjoyed it. Research Methods is also required for the psychology major, so that is part of the reason I am taking this class too.
4:30 pm: Once my Research Methods class ended I had a bit of time until dinner! I will use this time to let you all know that most classes (except labs and maybe a few others) last for an hour and 15 minutes.Â
EVENING
5:00 pm: There is a big dinner rush at five and I contribute to it. The most popular dining halls for dinner right now are Tyler and Comstock. This night I had pizza for dinner!Â
7:05 pm: After dinner, I had my final class AFR289: Race, Feminism, and Resistance in Movements for Social Change. The professor for this class is amazing and I was so excited to take another one of their classes! This class--and pretty much all of my classes are discussion-based. We all came to class having read a piece by Meg thee Stallion and we discussed this as well as the syllabus and other things to expect from the class.Â
8:20 pm: Finally, at 8:20 pm I was finished with all of my classes. I *try* to stop doing school work at 8:30 pm (although it does not always happen), so I was done for the night. I listened to some music, brushed my teeth and did my other night activities and was off to bed! That was my day!
Thank you, my loves for sticking with me in this post! I am so looking forward to the rest of this semester and I hope that you all are excited too. I am sending you my good energies. Chat soon. Tootles.

Scheduling Disaster
AO3
Peter had a pretty solid schedule, one that he did not like to mess up, please and thank you. Monday to Friday he had school, so from about 7:30 to 3, he was in class. Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays he had Acadec practice after school until about 4 or 4:30. So, after school or AcaDec practice, Peter was free to patrol, which he did until he was expected home around 6 for dinner. Then, after dinner, he did homework, until about 9 or 10, when heâd patrol again. And on school nights his curfew was strictly at 12:30 AM. It used to be 12, but after missing it so many times he got Mr. Stark to convince Aunt May to extend it, just a little bit.Â
The only day in the school week that was different was Friday, which was when heâd patrol until about 5 or 6, before going to Mr. Starkâs Tower. Usually, they would have some lab time, eat dinner, and maybe watch a movie. Sometimes they would be in the lab all night, and sometimes theyâd skip the lab all together and just watch a movie. Either way, Friday nights were dedicated as âMr. Stark time.â He usually slept over in the Tower on those nights, mainly because Mr. Stark didnât like the thought of Peter swinging home in the early hours of the morning, and Happy had woken up at 4 AM just to drive all across New York City one too many times. Either way, it meant that Saturdays were typically spent sleeping in, eating breakfast with Ms. Potts and Mr. Stark, spending some more time with the man, usually in the lab, and doing homework. Occasionally heâd hang out with Ned and, or, MJ on Saturdays too. Then, starting around 8 or 9 PM, heâd start his patrol. Saturdays were the only night where his curfew was mostly non-existent, as long as he texted Mr. Stark hourly updates. Technically it was 3 AM, and Peter was home in bed most Saturdays before that, but sometimes he stayed out later. What could he say? The city needed him. Sunday was dedicated for homework and spending time with Aunt May, and then patrolling at night with his usual curfew.
All this to say, Peter liked his schedule. Everything had a place and was timed out specifically so that he would have time for everything. Being a teenage superhero was hard, after all. Most people got that little chart that had âSocial Life â Good Grades â Hobbiesâ on it and were told to pick two. Peterâs chart looked more like âSocial Life â Good Grades â Extracurriculars â Mr. Stark/Lab Time â Spidermanning â Familyâ and yet was still told to only pick two. But two wasnât enough for Peter, would never be enough, so he found a way to do it all.Â
But he wasnât complaining, no not at all. His schedule worked, he got to do everything he needed. Sure, it left him a little tired, and sure, sometimes heâd after to eat meals while doing homework, or while patrolling, but it was worth it. There had been no problems with his schedule so far, even though Ned had once called it a little bit âtoo muchâ, and Mr. Stark had commented on it before, but nothing more than an âIâm worried youâre overworking yourself, Pete,â so he was fine.Â
After all, heâd always been like this, it wasnât anything concerning. Itâs just that, well, after the Vulture incident, and getting closer to Mr. Stark, and being in Junior year now, he was busier. And sure, maybe he had become more strict about his scheduling after The Incident, but it was just because he had more on his plate. Thatâs all. He just needed to make sure nothing, and no one, messed up his schedule. And no one would because everyone and their dog knew that Peterâs schedule was important.Â
That is, until he walked into the common room in the tower Friday evening.Â
A brunette was sitting on the couch, staring intensely at some game on his phone. Heâd obviously not heard Peter walk into the room, or if he had, he was just ignoring him.
âUh⌠hi?â Peter said, his voice shaking just a little.Â
The brunette looked up immediately, a brief emotion of something showing on his face before he just settled on a disgruntled look. âWho are you?â it came out as a sneer and Peter bristled. He said it as if Peter didnât belong here, but it was Friday, it was his day to be here. His day to spend time with Mr. Stark. He opened his mouth to say something, to give a retort, or at least to give his name, but Mr. Stark chose that exact moment to walk in.Â
âOh, shit, Pete. I forgot to text you,â he looked genuinely surprised that Peter was there and, ya. Wow. That hurt a bit.
âThis is Harley, heâs going to be staying here for a couple of weeks. There were some family problems andââ
âTony, whoâs this?â the brunetteâHarleyâasked, shooting a quick glare to Mr. Stark. It was clear that he didnât want Peter to know why he was here. And for the most part, Peter understood. After all, he was a stranger, and strangers shouldnât know the happenings of your family. And yet, it was just another stab to the heart. This boy, who could have only been maybe a year older than Peter himself, seemed to be close to Mr. Stark, close enough that he called him âTonyâ, and close enough that Mr. Stark even forgot about Peter.Â
âThis is Peter, heâsââ Â
âHis intern,â Peter interrupted, giving Tony a look that clearly said âno Spider-Manâ, or at least, he hoped it said that.Â
Harley gives him a weird look, and Peter gets the immediate feeling that heâs not wanted there. He shifts uncomfortably and turns his attention back to Mr. Stark. For now, he didnât have to worry about Harley.Â
âUhm, so, lab night tonight isâŚ?â Peter trails off.Â
âUh, well, I have to get Harley here settled in, but once thatâs done I donât see why we canât work in the lab once that's done,â Mr. Stark scratched his beard, peering down at the two teens.Â
Peter smiled, that was all he needed. He didnât mind waiting a little bit before having lab-time. He could always work on homework in the meantime. Â
âSpeaking of that, though, Pete. You canât stay over tonight,â Peterâs head shot up, and Mr. Stark must have noticed the faint look of sadness that crossed his face, âWell you can, itâs just that. Well, I sort of told Harley he could sleep in your room tonight.âÂ
This time Peter looked at Harley, and then back to Mr. Stark. He hoped his emotions werenât showing too much, but heâd never been good at hiding them. Aunt May always said he wore his heart on his sleeve. But the idea that Mr. Stark not only forgot about his and Peterâs lab night, but he also gave Peterâs room to some⌠some stranger? It hurt. It felt like he was being replaced.
âYouâd think that with what, over a hundred floors and probably more than twice as many rooms the old man would have a spare bedroom somewhere, but apparently not,â Harley grumbled, stretching out on the couch where he was sitting.Â
He was so comfortable here, arguably more comfortable than Peter was. Peter always held at least a little bit of respect for Mr. Stark and his home, no matter how much they bantered, but it seemed like Harley just knew Mr. Stark more. Peter pressed his lips together, he hated it. Â
âI donât have guests often,â Mr. Stark shrugged, âWhat can I say.âÂ
A tense silence fell over the three. Harley was looking at his phone, seemingly refusing to look at Peter, and Mr. Stark was eyeing both teens with a careful eye. Peter, on the other hand, stood in place, with his backpack hanging off one shoulder, and shifted awkwardly a couple of times. He didnât know what to do, but it seemed like Harley didnât want him here, and Mr. Stark was barely acknowledging him.Â
âAnyways, what do you want for dinner, kid?â Mr. Stark turned, heading towards a seat.Â
âI guessââ Â
âPizza would be good, Tony.â Harleyâs voice was loud. It demanded attention, unlike Peterâs which seemed to be getting quieter and quieter as the day went on. It was so easy when he was Spider-Man, but when he was Peter Parker it was so much harder to force people to see him, to listen to him. But heâd never felt like that with Mr. Stark before. Mr. Stark had always listened to Peter. Even before the Vulture Incident, Mr. Stark showed interest, even though he didnât directly speak to Peter. Months later he found out that the man had listened to all of his phone messages, and had kept a close eye on Spider-Man to make sure he was safe. After the incident though, the man got closer to Peter and listened to him in person. Â
But now, with Harley here, he felt like it was hard to be heard again.Â
And, on top of that, Harley answered to Peterâs nickname. Mr. Stark always called Peter kid, and only Peter. And yet, Harley answered to the name too? It was petty and childish, but it made an anger boil in Peterâs stomach. He caught Harleyâs eye again, and the other boy just rolled his eyes before sending a brief glare. Mr. Stark didnât even notice the looks Harley was giving Peter, or if he did, he didnât acknowledge them. Peter sighed, he could tell when he wasnât wanted somewhere.Â
âUhm, Mr. Stark?â Peter called out, just as the man was telling F.R.I.D.A.Y. to place a pizza order.Â
âYa, kid?âÂ
âI actually forgot that I uh, Iâve got a big essay due Monday that I need to work on. MJ said sheâd help me, but I gotta call her tonight about it⌠so Iâm uh. Iâm gonna go? And skip the lab for this week,â he could feel himself starting to shake a little bit. He just wanted to go home, maybe go on another quick patrol, and then watch a movie with Aunt May.Â
Mr. Stark gave him a weird look, and for a moment Peter was wondering if the man could read his mind. He got more and more nervous the longer the silence went on, but he spared a look over to Harley, and the other boy was finally giving the barest of smiles. Apparently leaving was a good decision, then.Â
âYa,â Mr. Stark finally spoke, âSure kid. Just give me a text when you get home, ok?âÂ
ââKay. Bye Mr. Stark,â he turned around heading towards the elevator, âBy Harley.â
 ..Â
Peter swung home. It was the best way to get his mind off of things. He wasnât necessarily looking to help people out, but he stopped by a few people who needed his help. There was nothing serious, but it made him feel better. Just something as simple as helping someone find their way around, or helping a young lady get to a subway station, anything like that, helped Peter feel a little lighter. The anger he felt at the Tower slowly seeped away, and soon he felt good enough to go home.Â
He entered through his bedroom window, changing into pyjamas, and sauntered into the kitchen of the apartment.Â
âPeter?â Aunt Mayâs voice rang with concern, âI wasnât expecting you home tonight. Did something happen?âÂ
She set down the knife she was holding and walked over to Peter, placing her hands on his cheeks as she checked him over for any injuries. Peter just shook his head and wrapped his arms around her.Â
âNo, I just missed you,â he lied. He didnât know how to tell Aunt May that Tony replaced him with some kid from Tennessee.Â
Aunt May hummed, brushing her hands through his hair. Peter could tell she didnât believe him, but she didnât press any further, so he appreciated that at least. They stayed like that for a few moments, Peter enjoying the warmth of the hug untilâ
âAunt May? Whatever you had on the stove is on fire,â Peter mumbled.Â
âWhat!â And just like that, the hug was over. His aunt ran over to the stove, turning it off as quick as she could and fanning out the flames. âWhy didnât your⌠your⌠Peter Tingleââ
âSpidey SenseâÂ
âSay anything? Canât you tell when something is about to happen,â her voice cracked as she tried to get the flames under control.Â
âIt doesnât like⌠always pick up on everything, May. It just does, sometimes?â Peter shrugged, âI donât really know how it works.âÂ
âWell, figure it out would you? So we can avoid any more kitchen fires, at least.â
âI think we can do that if you just stop trying to cook,â Peter laughed.Â
âHardy har, laugh it off, Pete. I guess weâre ordering in for the night, does Thai sound good?â There was soft clanging as she placed the pan in the sink, turning to give Peter a look that only Aunt May could.Â
âYa,â Peter smiled, âThat sounds good.âÂ
 ..
He and Aunt May watched old rom coms all Friday night, and Peter chose to sleep in on Saturday, something he didnât do very often. His plan for today was to get some homework done and then Ned and he were supposed to build the Lego Death Star before Peter went on patrol. That was all put to a stop when at 9 AM Peter rolled out of bed to the sound of his phone ringing.Â
âWâssâpââ he mumbled, still half asleep.
âAre you asleep right now? Atâoh, itâs 9 in the morning. But still, thatâs pretty late for a boy genius like yourself,â Mr. Starkâs voice echoed.Â
âIâs Saturdây Mâssâr Stârk,â Peter yawned, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes, trying to get his mind to clear up, âI get to sleep in.âÂ
âMhm, well, get that lazy Spider butt up,â Peter could practically hear Mr. Stark rolling his eyes, âWe missed out on our lab night last night, so how do you feel about coming over today? You can even stay over tonight if youâd like, I got Harley set up in his own room now.â Â
Peter immediately perked up. Clearly, this meant that Mr. Stark still wanted him around, especially if he was reaching out to him first. It meant heâd have to cancel on Ned though, and he probably wouldnât start his patrol until later, but⌠well, it was worth it.  Â
âYa, that sounds good Mr. Stark. I can be there at like, noon?â It would give him a couple of hours to eat breakfast, get started on his homework, and text Ned to cancel their plans. His friend would be disappointed, he was sure, but heâd understand. Peter would tell him they could do it next weekend. Plus, Mr. Stark didnât mention anything about Harley, so Peter was hoping it would just be his mentor and him. It would give him an opportunity to work on some Spider-Man updates that he had thought of, plus he needed to fix some minor bugs.Â
It was nothing serious, but a couple of nights ago he had swung face-first into a wall after getting distracted, and it had hurt the coms in Peterâs suit. Mr. Stark knew about it and they were supposed to fix it last night until Harley happened, so Peter was sure it would get fixed tonight.Â
âSound good, kid. Just head into the lab when you get here, Iâll have some lunch waiting for you.â
âSee you then, Mr. Stark!âÂ
Peter did a small flip off of his bed, excitement making him restless. Heâd been so upset and worried that he was being replaced by Harley, but clearly, he wasnât! Mr. Stark obviously still wanted him around. He popped his head out of his bedroom door, shouting out âAunt May! Iâm going over to the Tower in a couple of hours!â Â
Aunt May turned from her place on the couch, looking up at Peter with a raised eyebrow. âItâs Saturday,â she said as if that was an explanation for her confusion. And, in her defense, it was. Peter was only ever at the Tower on Saturdays if he woke up there in the first place, he rarely went there if he had slept at home. Â
âYa, but with our lab night getting canceled last night Mr. Stark wanted to do it today, so Iâll probably be there all day, or at least until I go out on patrol,â Peter shrugged, trying to play it off as no big deal. But Aunt May looked at him with an all-knowing look and Peter was sure she knew more than she was letting on. âWell, as long as you get your homework finished it's fine,â was all she said. Â
Peter nodded, quickly going back to his desk and getting to work. There wasnât much to do and he was sure he could finish most of it, at least, before he had to get to Mr. Starkâs.Â
 ..Â
Peter may have overestimated his ability to get his work done in time by just a bit. He had been planning on taking the subway to the Tower but found himself in need of swinging, and even when he swung all the way there he was fifteen minutes late. Not the worst, but he felt like it was different today. Different because now Mr. Stark had another âkidâ he could work with.Â
He changed quickly in an alley outside the Tower and entered through the backdoor as usual. There was a happy skip to Peter's step as he got into Mr. Starkâs personal elevator, with his bag slung on one shoulder. Despite the fact that this messed up his schedule, Peter was just glad he was actually going to spend some time with Mr. Stark. His only hope was that Harley wouldn't be there.Â
âGood afternoon Mr. Parker,â F.R.I.D.A.Y spoke, âWould you like me to bring you up to Bossâ lab?â Â
âYes please, F.R.I.â
The elevator was small and fast, and despite the fact that Mr. Starkâs lab was on the 90-something-th floor it only took a matter of seconds for Peter to arrive. He walked through the halls with ease, his muscle memory bringing him straight to the lab. There was a slight tingle from his Spidey Sense, but Peter paid it no mind. It was probably because he had been so upset when he was in the Tower last night. Plus, his Spidey Sense was just like⌠anxiety, but for superheroes. He put his hand against the sensor and the doors opened for him. Â
âHey Mr. Starââ he froze. Â
There was a lanky, tall body sitting at his spot. At his desk.Â
âHey,â the other boy mumbled, not lifting his head from where he was staring at something on theâ no, on Peterâs âdesk. âThe old manâs gonna be back in a few, he said he had something to do.â
âHeâs not that old,â Peter mumbled, feeling the sudden need to stick up for his mentor. He knew or at least had a feeling that Harley was just teasing Mr. Stark. It seemed like it was their dynamic, but still. âF.R.I. could you let Mr. Stark know that Iâm here, please?âÂ
âRight away, Mr. Parker,â she replied.Â
âYouâre uh,â Peter shifted uncomfortably, âYouâre at my desk.â There was a bit to his tone, one that he hadnât done on purpose, but he didnât correct himself.Â
âWhat? Are you gonna go cry about it to mommy?â Harley finally lifted his head from whatever was so important on the desk, but only to roll his eyes, âI donât see your name written on it anywhere.âÂ
Thatâs because it doesnât need to be, Peter wanted to say, because only he and Mr. Stark went into this lab.Â
But instead, he just shrugged, âItâs where I work,â was all he could say. The anger was starting to boil in his stomach again, and Peter could feel the tinge of⌠something. Jealousy? But that wasnât like Peter. He never got jealous. Uncle Ben taught him better than that.Â
And yet, he couldnât think of another word for the emotion he was feeling towards Harley. Harley was replacing him. He took Peterâs âMr. Stark Timeâ away from him, he disrupted Peterâs carefully planned out schedule, he took Peterâs nickname, took his spot in the lab, and took his room. Mr. Stark was replacing Peter with Harley, so ya. He was jealous. Sue him.Â
âGod, are you such a goody-two-shoes that you have to come into work on the weekend? Canât you just like, go home? Tony has me here right now, so he doesnât need any more help,â Harley gives a glare before going back to whatever he was working on.Â
Peter bristled, opening his mouth to retort back. But he didnât know what to say. That he and Mr. Stark were close? Obviously not close enough for Mr. Stark to remember when they were meeting, or be there on time, or mention that there would be some other kid interrupting their time together.Â
And speaking of the devil, right at that moment Mr. Stark walked in. There was a tense silence in the air, and Mr. Stark looked back and forth between the two teens. Just like Aunt May, Peter had a feeling that Mr. Stark knew more than he was letting onto. But then, the man just sighed, took off his iconic sunglasses, and shoved his hands in his pockets.Â
âYou two catching up with each other?âÂ
âUh, ya, I guess,â Peter shrugged, hovering awkwardly over his desk. He had things in it, important things. Spider-Man things. Things he didnât want some stranger looking through. He shot Mr. Stark a look, trying to convey exactly that with just his face. He furrowed his eyebrows, sharply pointing his head to the desk, and luckily, Mr. Stark nodded.Â
âHey, uh, kid,â And fuck. There was that name again. This time Peter knew it wasnât directed at him, Mr. Stark was looking directly at Harley, âThatâs Peteâs desk, and heâs kind of got a system, so why donât you move to the end of it, gives you both room to work there, ok? Weâll get another desk set up soon.âÂ
Harley raised his head, huffing slightly, but he moved over wordlessly. Or, almost wordlessly. If Peter didnât have super hearing he wouldnât have heard it, and Mr. Stark definitely didnât hear it. âNeurotic much, eh?â Harley mumbled under his breath.Â
Peter tensed. Harley was treating him no better than how Flash did, and it was causing him to be on edge. His Spidey Sense wouldnât stop tingling. It wasnât telling him that there was an immediate danger, but it was like it knew that Harley didnât like him.Â
Nonetheless, Peter sat down at his spot, making sure to sit at the opposite end of the long table, just so that Harley wouldnât be able to see what he was working on. He guessed that he and Mr. Stark would have to wait to repair the coms in his suit. They couldnât exactly pull it up in front of Harley. Because of Secret Identities and all that. But that was ok. Peter could work on updating his web formula.Â
Heâd had a few ideas on how to improve it. One, heâd really like to make a set of quick-dissolving webs, because 2 hours was sometimes a bit much. He also wanted to see if he could develop his webs to be able to cover injuries. Right now he was able to do it on himself, but he knew that it had chemicals in it that would be unsafe for broken skin. The only reason he used it on himself was because of his healing factor; it wouldnât be able to do any lasting damage. But it could probably cause light chemical burns on regular people.Â
He brought out some scraps on paper, as well as a sheet that had his original web formula on it, and got to work. It was silent for the most part, Peter usually preferred to work in silence, only chatting with Mr. Stark on and off. But today Peter didnât say a word. Even Harley was quiet for the first little while. But then, he kept speaking up, asking Mr. Stark to come over and look over his work, or making little quips. Peter kept his head down, feeling more like a stranger in the lab than he ever had before. It was hard, he didnât always know what the other two were talking about, and the one time he had tried to join the conversation he had just gotten a small glare from Harley.Â
So, Peter just sighed and kept his head down and focused on his work. He was making good progress on the equations so heâd be able to test it out soon. He worked on his webbing so often that it was practically second nature at this point. Slowly the hours ticked by, and Peter found himself ready to test it out. The first one to test out was the quick dissolving webs because Peter felt like it was most important. He was really starting to get complaints from the police who kept finding criminals webbed up to the wall. Apparently, it was hard to get out of. Who knew.Â
âMr. Stark, do you think you could come and check this out for a second?â Peter asked, ignoring the fact that the man was with Harley. Surely he could spare a couple of minutes.Â
âJust a minute Pete,â the man hummed, scratching his beard as he peered down at Harleyâs work.Â
So Peter waited, and waited, and waited. In reality, he probably only waited about 15 minutes, but it felt like ages as he watched his mentor interact with Harley. Finally, Peter stood up and grabbed a couple of vials and chemicals from the shelf, sighed a bit as he did. And no, he was not pouting at all, and if F.R.I.D.A.Y said anything different he was going to reboot her.Â
Eventually, Mr. Stark comes over, just as Peter is setting everything down at his desk. He gives Peter a look that distinctly says âreally?â and Peter just shrugs. It wasnât like Harley paid him enough attention to really get that he was working on Spider-Man stuff.Â
âLooks good, Pete, go ahead and move to testing it out,â the man ruffles his head and Peter shoots him a grateful smile.Â
There were so many emotions going on in Peterâs head, and he really didnât know what to think, but he was happy to get some attention from Mr. Stark. Maybe he really was just jealous of Harley. He wasnât used to sharing Mr. Starkâs attention, and it was a lot to get used to. And yet, even with that knowledge, Peter couldnât make the burning anger go away.Â
And, Peter couldnât say he felt good about his current emotions, but when Harleyâs head shot up when Mr. Stark praised him he couldnât help but feel a little smug.Â
He was here in the lab for a reason, after all. Mr. Stark would never work with an idiot weekly.Â
Well, debatable, because Peter knew he was kind of an idiot sometimes, but that was more street smarts. He knew that when it came to science he was nowhere near being an idiot.Â
Just as the silence was coming over the three of them again, Mr. Starkâs phone rang.Â
âRhodey? Ya, no Iâm free, what's up?â Mr. Stark called out, probably louder than he needed to, âWait one sec.âÂ
âHey, you two, Iâm just going to head to the common room for a second, youâre good here by yourselves?â He gave them both a suspicious glare, but both boys nodded, âOk good, donât die, have fun, all that jazz. Iâll be back in a minute.âÂ
And then he left.Â
And Peter knew what the man was doing. He was never the most subtle person in the room. Or in the world, probably. But that was what made him Tony Stark, and it was one of the qualities Peter admired in Mr. Stark. He was always confident and sure about his decisions. Even if that decision was forcing two teenagers to spend some time together, despite the fact that they clearly didnât like each other. Plus, it helped that he had super hearing, so he could hear Mr. Stark say, âRhodey, I just donât know what to do with themâ as he walked away from the lab.Â
âGod,â Harley bemoaned, getting up to walk closer to Peter, âYouâre such a pest, you know that? Like you literally work here every week, but I can't even get a full day to hang out with Tony? Youâve always got to pop up in one way or another, fucking annoying.âÂ
Peter forced his lips together, trying to hold in an outburst that was surely going to happen, and just shrugged. âItâs my work, I like it,â he said through clenched teeth, âAnd youâre the one who showed up during our workday, thatâs not my fault.â Â
âCanât you just like, leave him alone for fucks sake. Heâs probably annoyed too. Like, just go home,â Harley sighed, and Peterâs Spidey Sense immediately perked up. Something was wrong.Â
He looked up at Harley just as he was pouring a vial of chemicals into his web mixture, peering at the other boy to see what was causing his Spidey Sense to go off. But the brunette was just standing there with his arms crossed, andâ was that? Was that a pout? Weird.Â
But Peter didnât get to think about it anymore, because before he knew it his body was moving without him thinking about it. He could feel the heat against his back as he grabbed Harleyâs arm and shoved him down, blocking the other boy with his own body. There was a loud BOOM, and the room shook slightly, and for a moment Peter was sure it was going to collapsâÂ
No, he thought, donât think about that right now.Â
And it was over just as fast as it had happened. He felt some minor burns on his back and arms, but nothing feels too amiss, other than the adrenaline that was currently pumping through his body. So Peter took a chance, and stood up, quickly looking around the room and down at Harley, who was now sitting on the floor. The other boy looked fine, though there were hints of a mild burn on his right arm. But the lab, on the other hand⌠well it was a mess.Â
The web formula had clearly exploded, and there were sticky webs all over the room. The vial he had been mixing it in was broken, and there was a small fire over the table, which Dum-E quickly came to extinguish.Â
Peter just looked around with wide eyes, his hands shaking from the adrenaline, as Harley looked up at him with equally wide, and concerned eyes.
âFuckââ Peter began to sigh, but he didn't get to finish the sentiment before the doors to the lab were swung open. Â
âWhat the hell happened in here?â Mr. Stark burst through the lab, sounding just as out of breath as Peter felt. His eyes held a fire in them, but he looked equally angry, concerned, and disheveled.
And Peter doesnât remember a time heâs been this afraid to face Mr. Stark. Probably not since the Ferry incident. But he fucked up this time. He hadnât been paying attention when he was grabbing chemicals, nor pouring them, and he caused an explosion. He was just happy it was minor.Â
âIâm sorry, Mr. Stark, I got distracted,â Peter mumbled his head down as he refused to face his mentor.Â
âDistracted?â the man shouted, and Peter was almost certain that he was angry enough to breathe fire, âYou know you canât get distracted in the lab, and especially not when youâre handling chemicals Peter! You know better than that!â
âI know, I jusââÂ
âNo, Pete. The adult is talking now, listen,â Mr. Stark put up a hand, and for the first time, Peter looked at the manâs face. He looked angry but also concerned. âIf you were tired or hungry or something you should have let me know, I wouldnât have made you come in today, but you cannot, be distracted. What if there had been a bigger explosion Peter? What if people got hurt? Were you not thinking at all?âÂ
âIâm sorry,â Peterâs voice quivered.Â
And at that, Mr. Stark paused, took a breath, and ran a hand through his hair. He looked calmer, and Peter was sure he was going to walk over and tell Peter that he was sorry for yelling. But insteadâÂ
âHarley,â Mr. Stark spoke, and Peterâs shoulders deflated, âGo up to MedBay. I want to talk with Peter alone for a second.âÂ
And for once, the brunette left the pair without saying anything. Apparently, the trick to get Harley to be quiet was to cause a minor explosion. Who knew.Â
Mr. Stark waited a few moments before turning back to Peter. It was clear he was still mad, but Peter didnât think he was going to yell anymore. Â
âPeter, what were you doing? How could you get so distracted that you poured the wrong chemical? What if you had gotten hurt?âÂ
âI heal fast, Mr. Stark,â And, ok ya. Maybe that wasnât the best thing to say to the man who was clearly concerned about him. But it was true! The burns would be gone by tomorrow.Â
Mr. Stark just sighed and ran a hand down his face. He took a few deep breaths, and Peter instantly recognized it as a tactic for the man to hold in his anger.Â
âFine then,â it clearly didnât work well enough, as Mr. Stark snapped at Peter with such venom that the boy took a visible step back, âWhat if Harley got hurt? He doesnât have any superpowers, Pete, he canât heal like you can. Sure, you canât get hurt, but he could have gotten really hurt. If it was worse, he could have died, Peter.âÂ
And at that, Peterâs eyes welled up with tears. Mr. Stark was clearly concerned about Harley, and clearly mad at Peter. Did he not see that it was the other boy who put Peter so on edge, so tense, and that was why Peter made the mistake?Â
âIâm⌠Mr. Stark, I didnât meanââÂ
âI know. But Peter, this canât happen. Youâre going to have to go home for the day, and weâll see about next Friday. I havenât decided if you get lab privileges or not.â
Tears began to fall, but Mr. Stark either didnât notice or didnât care. He was quick to turn on his heels and walk towards MedBay, where Harley was. Because of course. Peter was beginning to feel like a fool. It was obvious that Mr. Stark and Harley were close, and were âconnectedâ as Harley had said earlier. And Peter? Well Mr. Stark only spoke to Peter in the first place because of Spider-Man, not because of Peter Parker. Sure, Mr. Stark clearly cared for him, and wanted him around, but not in the same way as Harley. Peter was never invited to stay at the Tower for more than a night, not like Harley, and Mr. Stark was clearly more concerned about Harleyâs safety than Peterâs.Â
(Thatâs not quite right though, is it? Somewhere deep down Peter knew he was just getting worked up, and he was just overly anxious and jealous. He knew Mr. Stark cared for him just as much as always, and he knew that Mr. Stark liked both Peter and Spider-Man. But right now? Right now Peter was too upset to think rationally. Later, he might look back on it and realize that it was a mixture of being jealous, angry, and probably the pain that came with the burns.)Â
Peter walked to the elevator, his head hanging in shame, as tears spilled out of his eyes. It was just a stupid mistake, but Mr. Stark was so mad at him, and only cared about Harley being ok. He sniffed, rubbing his eyes as F.R.I took him down to the lobby. âTake care, Mr. Parker,â and Peter swore he could hear a hint of concern in the AIâs voice. He shot a small smile up to the ceiling but said nothing more before leaving. Â
He took a deep breath once outside, trying to get in as much fresh air as he could in New York City. He walked as quickly as he could, his mind already made up about what he was going to do. He had planned to patrol after lab night anyway, and sure he was a couple of hours early and hadnât had dinner yet, but it was fine. Heâd stop by a hot dog truck or something during the patrol.Â
So Peter ran into an alleyway, hopping as he kicked off his shoes and changed out of his civilian clothes. Going on patrol would be a good way to use his built-up adrenaline, anyway. He could use any lasting anger and jitteriness to help people. So once he was in his suit, and his bag was webbed up high on a while, Peter got to swinging.Â
It was still rather early in the night, only about 5 or 6 PM, but it was the end of November so it was already dark, but even so, he wasnât expecting much. There was a young teen that was trying to rob a small grocer early into the patrol, but all it took was Spider-Man showing his face, giving a wave and a short âHey kid, Iâll buy that for you,â for the kid to back off. Peter didnât really have money to be wasting, but he figured the young kid needed it. Plus, it was just a sandwich that was a couple of dollars, it wouldnât kill Peter to lose that amount of money.Â
Peter swung around for another hour, and nothing much happened. He stopped a group of bullies and walked the poor kid home, but other than that Peter just swung and kept an eye out. It was when Peter was sitting on the edge of a roof, peering down onto the streets and keeping a careful eye out for any trouble that he heard it;Â
âHey! Fuck off!â and even though Peter had only known the guy for just over a day, he already knew his voice like the back of his hand. Â
It was hard to forget the voice of the guy who was replacing you. Â
(But he wasnât, and Peter knew that. Or would know that, once he calmed down.)Â Â
And for a brief second, a second that Peter was not proud of, he hesitated. It wasnât like he didnât like Harley, sure, he wasnât the guyâs biggest fan, but he didnât deserve to be attacked. But, shit. Really? Really? The guy that's been at Peterâs throat all day, the guy that Peter was mad at, is getting attacked and now Peter has to go save him. Because of course, he does.
So Peter swings down, climbing down the wall straight above Harley. There was a guy with mangly blonde hair and a hand that was roughly holding Harley against a wall. When Peter looked closer he could see a gun in the guyâs other hand, which was being pushed right into Harleyâs stomach. Â
âListen, I literally, donât have anything, man,â Harley said, and Peter could tell he was trying to stay brave, trying to put on a show, but he could hear the shake in his voice. And wow, Harley reminded Peter of Mr. Stark.Â
âLook at your fucking shoes, your jacket, I know money when I see one,â the man sneered, shoving his gun further into Harleyâs stomach, âSo pay uââÂ
âHey man! Stealing isnât nice!â Peter chose that moment to jump down, giving the man a kick to the shoulder to get him to back off Harley. Â
âFuck off bug boy,â the man spat, trying to take a step closer to Harley again, but Peter stood directly between the two.Â
âI feel like purposefully calling me by the wrong name is just rude, I mean come on! I have a spider on my chest,â Peter rolled his eyes, throwing his hands up in the air for good measure, âBut if that's how it's gonna be Iâm gonna call you Mr. dumbface, cause really your face is annoying me right now,â Â
There was silence.Â
âOk, so Iâm a little out of it today, but a little laugh wouldâve been nice,â he turned back to Harley, who was staring at him with a slightly gaped mouth.Â
âYou⌠youâre⌠Really?â was all Harley stuttered. And, ok, ya. Maybe Peter should have seen it coming that he wasnât the only one who could recognize voices.Â
âListen weâll talk about it later, ok, lemme just web this guââÂ
âIâm not going back to jail!â the guy yelled, suddenly a lot more defensive than he had been before. And Peter didnât like that. A guy with a gun? Easy-peasy, just had to disarm him. Usually, they didnât even want to use their weapon. But an angry, defensive guy with a gun? Well, that was significantly more difficult to deal with.Â
Peter had a split second of warning when his Spidey Sense went off. It wasnât enough, he knew it wasnât. But his instinct kicked in and he grabbed Harleyâs arm, shoving him to the ground just like he had done earlier today.Â
And really, Peter needed to stop with constant, daily, accidents. This was getting a bit much.Â
There were three shots, the first two went into Peter's stomach, and the second in his right shoulder. He grunted but didnât fall. He gave the guy a good punch in the face, knocking him down to the ground.Â
âThatâŚâ Peter grunted, kicking the gun away, âThat was rude.â Â
He quickly webbed the guy up, sparing no amount of webs to ensure that he would stay on the ground for a while. He stumbled back, placing a hand over his stomach as he tried to assess the damage. He didnât think the bullets hit anything important, but he also couldnât tell if they were still in him or not. What he did know is that he was bleeding fast.Â
A hand landed on Peterâs shoulder, and his first instinct was to attack. His Spidey Senses were going haywire, everything felt like a threat. He went to spin and web up whoever was grabbing him, but he was beginning to feel dizzy and practically tripped over his own two feet. And fuck, he felt like shit.Â
âHey! Hey! Itâs me, itâs me. Itâs Harley,â the brunette said, leading Peter to sit on the ground, away from the mugger.Â
âYouâre⌠Youâre bleeding, like a lot. What⌠What do we do?â and this was the first time Peter ever heard Harley sound unsure of himself.Â
Peterâs first instinct was to ask Karen to call Mr. Stark, so he did exactly that. But his mind was starting to get foggy, and it felt like there were cotton balls in his mouth. Every word was a struggle, and every breath hurt, and fuck he just wants to be at the Tower so Mr. Stark and Dr. Cho can patch him up again. Â
âKaaareeenn,â Peter mumbled, each syllable feeling like another stab to his stomach, âKaren⌠Kareeeen,â He kept calling out for her, but the AI is strangely quiet.Â
Thereâs a reason she doesn't answer though, and Peter knows it⌠but he canât remember. His brain is too foggy, and he doesnât really know where he is anymore, or who he wants. He just knows he needs Karen to answer him. So he kept mumbling her name. Â
âOh my god, I think I broke Tonyâs genius child,â Harley mumbled, and yes! Yes! Thatâs who Peter needs right now!Â
âMiâssâr⌠Miâssâr Sârk,â he stuttered out, nodding at Harley, who just stares at him with wide and confused eyes. Peter just continues, âMiiiisâerrrrr Sâarrrrk. Call. Call, Miâssâr Sârk. Karen, Kaareen, call Missssâr Sârk.âÂ
And he can hear Harley mumbling above him, something about âbreaking a superheroâ, and how âTony is going to kill himâ, but he doesnât really care, but wow, his stomach hurts. And his shoulder hurts. And how much blood has he lost? A lot, probably. Somewhere, deep down, Peter knew that he only got this foggy, this out of it, when there was internal bleeding. Which, ya, he didnât like that he knew that, but what could he do? His brain wasnât working fast enough right now though to be able to relay that information to Harley.Â
âOk.. Ok⌠Get him to Tony, he can help. Ya, ya. Thatâs a good idea. Phone⌠Phone⌠ok. Ok, thatâs fine, no phone. Weâll just walk back, totally fine. Just gonna walk back to Stark Towers with a bleeding ⌠Spider⌠guy,â Harley kept mumbling and it was starting to get on Peterâs nerves. Why wasnât Karen answering him?Â
(Because... his mind supplied unhelpfully, you were supposed to fix the coms with Mr. Stark but you never did.)Â Â
And suddenly he was being lifted up or at least helped up. âCâmon, Câmon. I need your help here, you gotta walk with me, weâre not that far from the Tower, just walk with me,â Harley kept speaking, and when Peter whined (no he didnât, heâll deny that if you ever ask him about it), Harley made sure to speak quieter.Â
Peter doesnât remember a lot about the whole trip, but he does remember tripping and falling a couple of times, and Harley telling people to move out of their way. âJust, just a few more steps, weâre almost there and then Tonyâll fix you up, heâll fix you up, donât worry,â at this point, Harley was talking more for himself than he was for Peter. Peter was barely listening.Â
Peter doesnât remember being taken up to the MedBay, nor does he remember Mr. Stark walking in with Dr. Cho, and he definitely doesnât remember the surgery that was performed to get the bullets out of his stomach. Apparently, the one in the shoulder was a clean shot. He was informed of everything a few hours after he woke up.Â
But when Peter first woke up he looked around the room, ignoring the familiar itch of an IV in his arm. Mr. Stark was asleep in a chair in the corner. For the most part he looked calm, collected, even somehow bored in his sleep, but Peter could practically feel the tension seeping off him. Then, there was Harley, who was sitting right next to Peterâs bed, and wide awake.Â
âUh⌠hi,â was all Harley said.Â
âF.R.I, can you turn down the lights please?â was all Peter had the energy to say at first. It was too bright. It was always too bright in the MedBay. Immediately, the lights turned down by 50%, and Peter mumbled out a thanks.Â
âAre you ok?â he turned to Harley, looking over the boy to see if there were any injuries. The only one he could see is the mild burn from earlier that day.Â
âAm Iâ am I ok? Dude, you got shot three times while wearing a red and blue spandex suit! What the fuck,â Harley looked shocked, maybe even a little angry, âGod, I hate New York. Youâre all so weird here, what the fuck is even happening?âÂ
âI dunno, this feels like a normal Saturday night to me,â Peter shrugged, trying to make light of the situation. He didnât like that the other boy was concerned over him.Â
âNormal? God, I hate it here,â Harley ran a hand through his hair, huffing out a laugh. There was a beat of silence before Peter broke out into a choked laugh too. Soon, the two boys were hardly able to contain themselves, Harley was doubled over laughing, and Peter was leaning back. Neither of them really knew what they were laughing about, but they both couldnât get over the sheer ridiculousness of the situation.Â
âItâs actually early Sunday morning, now,â Peterâs laughter got caught off, and he snapped his neck to look at the man in the corner.Â
Now that Mr. Starkâs eyes were open and aware he could see that they were a little red and a little swollen. But Peter was more focused on the whole âSundayâ thing.Â
âAunt May!â he bolted up from bed, ready to get dressed right that minute.Â
âHas already been contacted,â Mr. Stark sighed, âReally, who do you take me for?âÂ
Peter didnât answer, he just shrugged and continued to look at his sheets. He was still feeling shitty about the explosion, and he didnât know how to face the man. At least, though, his mind had cleared up from his previous anger and jealousy. Obviously, Mr. Stark cared about Peter and wanted him around, the tear marks on his face proved it.Â
âListen, both of you...â Mr. Stark trailed off, and both boys kept their eyes on the man, waiting for him to speak. âIâm sorry I blew up at both of you today,â and at that Peter sent Harley a look, who just shrugged and mouthed âIâll tell you laterâ, âI shouldnât have yelled, but honestly? Youâre both annoying little shits, and you worried me.â
âPeterâs the worse one,â Harley muttered.Â
âSays the guy who got mugged on his second night in New York,â Peter shot a teasing look.Â
âHey! Tony told me to go for a walk! What was I supposed to do?âÂ
âBring your phone for one,â Mr. Stark chimed in.Â
Both boys looked at him sharply, âWeâre not talking to you.âÂ
There was a beat of silence before the two teens broke out into laughter again, and Mr. Stark just sighed.Â
âI canât believe Iâve spent two days trying to get you two to like each other, and all it took was a mugging, getting shot 3 times, and getting both of you to save each other,â he rolled his eyes, âIâll write that down for next time.âÂ
âTo be fair, you maybe should have warned both of us that you were going to try to force a new friendship,â Peter mentioned.Â
âDonât be too hard on him, Old man is old enough that heâs probably got dementia or some shit,â Harley chipped in.Â
âHe does forget things a lot, one time he forgot to wear pants to a meeting,âÂ
âThat was one time!âÂ
âYa, ok Mr. Stark.âÂ
âMy God, between the two of you, Iâve created a monster,â Mr. Stark sighed as Harley cackled, âGo ahead. Laugh all you want. Iâll be in the kitchen, eating normal human food that a certain Mr. Parker wonât get until the literal holes in his stomach are healed. And Harley? I just don't want to feed you, so suffer.âÂ
And with that, the man left. Both teens laughed briefly, rolling their eyes at their mentor.Â
âListen, Iâm sorry I was hard on you earlier,â Harley finally spoke up, âI was just excited to spend time with Tony. I havenât seen him in, jeez, like four years? And it was a bit of a shock to find out I had to share him.âÂ
Peter shook his head, âNo, Iâm sorry too. I wasnât very welcoming to you, and I definitely didnât make any effort.â
There was a silence, an awkward one that Peter wanted to fill.Â
âI uh, well. I donât really have a lot of men in my life, not a lot of father figures I guess. I had my Uncle Ben, but he died⌠a while ago. And well, Mr. Stark stepped up a few months ago, and I guess I kinda latched on a bit too much. I was jealous when you came,â he shrugged, whispering the last part.Â
Because, God, it was so hard to admit to someone that you were jealous of them. But it had to be done, especially if Harley was staying at the Tower for a couple weeks.Â
âJealous of me?â Harley sounded shocked.Â
âYa, I mean. He like, didnât even text me to cancel our lab night, and he gave you my room, and you were with us for our lab day, and we didnât even do our movie night. I thought you were replacing me, which is stupid, I know now,Â
âDude. Tonyâs known I was coming here two weeks ahead of time and literally forgot to set me up a room. I showed up at the front door and he was still shocked. He didnât forget to text you, he forgot I was coming,â
âOh.âÂ
âYa, oh. And, well, Iâm only here because of family stuff,â Harley paused, and Peter could see that he was debating whether or not he should continue.Â
âMy sister got sick. Cancer, they said, so she and my mom had to go to the hospital while she gets treatment. And my mom, well, she didnât want me home alone, and she knew she couldnât really take care of me and my sick sister. So Tony said I could stay here for a few weeks until they were back home. So I wasnât here to replace you, Iâm just a charity case,â and Peterâs heart practically broke at the way Harleyâs shoulders sagged. He knew that feeling.Â
Mr. Stark wasnât the best at letting people know his true intentions, and it was easy to feel like you were a burden to the man. Peter should know, he was President of feeling that way.Â
âHarley, listen. Iâve only known Mr. Stark for like, a few months now. Less than a year,â he started, âBut I know for a fact that he doesnât let just anyone stay in the Tower. He only lets people he really, really, cares about in here. And his lab! Plus I see how he talks with you! Youâve got him wrapped around your finger,â
âSays you,âÂ
âWell then the two of us together? We can get anything we want,â and that made Harley laughed.Â
They settled into another silence, this one much less awkward. The only sounds were of their breathing and of the machines beeping.Â
âSo, uh, Spider, eh?â Harley raised an eyebrow, âAre you some sort of bug superhero?âÂ
âIâm Spider-Man,â Peter answered incredulously, âHavenât you heard of me?â
âUh, no?âÂ
âThe Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man?â Harley shook his head, âCrap, Iâve gotta start working outside of New York, I guess.âÂ
âSo are you a mutant?â
âWhat?â Peter laughed, âNah, until about a year ago I was totally normal, less than even. Asthmatic, and I needed glasses, and honestly a strong gust of wind couldâve knocked me over.âÂ
âWhat changed?â
âRadioactive spider,â Peter shrugged as if it answered everything.Â
Harley barked out a laugh, âWhat?âÂ
âIt bit me, now Iâm like, part spider I guess.âÂ
âShit⌠Thatâs wild,â
âYa,âÂ
And with that, both boys were silent again, this time both of their breathing began getting shallower and shallower, and before they knew it they were passed out. The last thing Peter heard was Mr. Stark walking by the room again,Â
âMonsters, the two of them.âÂ
