MONSTER VS MONSTER (part 3, 1974) It's a Thing thing. You wouldn't understand. MORE: http://bit.ly/MonsterVsMonster-Part3 --- Artists: Gil Kane & John Romita Sr From: Marvel Two-in-One 1 Featuring: Thing vs Man-Thing --- Once upon a time, the Thing was once of Marvel's most popular characters. When you go back and read his earlier appearances, he comes across as self-pitying bellend. In MONSTER VS MONSTER, he's actually more like a villain than a hero, ultimately destroying a man's business for selling a magazine with Man-Thing on the cover. Lucky for us, Ben moved with the times and started to how more strength of character during John Byrne's tenure on the FF series.

NEW THIS WEEK 05.26.09
If you're a regular reader of this blog--and who isn't?--you may have noticed a few readers persistently comment that I "don't even listen to the albums" and "just look at the covers" before writing my reviews!
You'd be correct if you were to assume that I find such comments deeply offensive!
So to set the record straight--and I'll only mention this once, then never bring it up again--such statements are patently untrue!
I only sometimes look at the covers!
Marilyn Manson: The High End Of Low (Interscope) One of the compelling and profound artists of all time--a master at self-expression with his finger on the pulse of all that really matters in this world, a guy whose impact on post-millennial culture has yet to accurately calibrated--would probably see this album in a record store and laugh! "Wow," he'd say, "is Marilyn Manson still around?" Later he'd joke with his friends that there was a song on the record called "Arma-godd**m-motherf***in-geddon" and they'd all chortle in disbelief! Then maybe they'd see a movie!
Grizzly Bear: Veckatamist (Warp) Certainly at critical mass at this point--with tours with Radiohead and Feist and a performance with the L.A. Philharmonic behind them--Grizzly Bear have emerged with an excellent new album that will sell more copies than many expect and perhaps set them on their way to superstardom! Not least because according to Wikipedia the album was "released on May 26th to widespread critical acclaim" and today is May 26th! Like, how does it know? It may be worth mentioning that the album was named after an island in Massachusetts! And that 3 out of 4 humans with attention deficit disorder will look at this album cover and think it's a new Beck album! Yep! Marketing's getting cooler!
Mandy Moore: Amanda Leigh (Storefront) Rather than devote the next three sentences to a review claiming that singer Amanda Leigh is liable to face stern legal action for titling her new album Mandy Moore--I mean, like, that would be pointless!--I'd like to mention that this new album is surprisingly good, extremely tuneful, and clearly pop-inspired, perhaps due to the contribution of producer Mike Viola of the Candy Butchers! Or maybe Mandy has simply come into her own! Check it out and you'll see--good stuff! Wonder if Marilyn Manson's a fan?
Julian Marley: Awake (Tuff Gong) A pretty dandy record from Julian Marley--son of Bob, brother of Stephen and Damian--this is his third and very likely not his last! As the title and album cover indicate, Julian was apparently out wandering on the beach and inexplicably fell asleep for quite some time! So imagine his chagrin when he opens his eyes and sees all that beautiful beachfront property now obliterated by the skyscrapers on the album cover! The poor guy! With guest appearances by brother Stephen on "A Little Too Late" and brother Damian on "Violence In The Streets," Awake is all you've ever expected from a Julian Marley album and more! Buy it today!
Electrik Red: How To Be A Lady, Volume 1 (Def Jam) People are already asking whether Electrik Red is "the new Danity Kane"--at least they are on the internet, where nothing more interesting ever happens--and I’m here to tell you: 1) The production by The Dream and Tricky Stewart is pretty appealing, especially on first single "Drink In My Cup", 2) These four women not only sing but can look attractive on command!, 3) Back in the old days when I was a sadistic record store clerk I'd make any guy looking for this album tell me the actual name of the album for kicks and 4) I am categorically behind any singing quartet featuring someone named Binkie! Combined, these four points make this record better than almost everything!
Dave Brubeck Quartet: Time Out: Legacy Edition; Miles Davis: Sketches Of Spain: Legacy Edition; Charles Mingus: Mingus Ah Um: Legacy Edition (all Columbia/Legacy) It's hard to believe that these three album--jazz classics all--have been out now for 50 years, but that appears to be the case! So wear the bottom of your trousers rolled! And if you don't have any of them, I'd suggest you purchase each and enjoy them all for the remainder of your life. The Brubeck album contains his best-known tunes--including "Blue Rondo al La Turk" and “Take Five"--the Davis album is the trumpeter's legendary collaboration with arranger Gil Evans, and the Mingus album, any way you look at it, is absolutely classic. Buy 'em all, put 'em on a shelf, buy a beret and watch things change!
Stratovarius: Polaris (Eagle) Aw, who am I kidding? Every once in a while, just like you, I enjoy playing highly polished technically proficient Finnish metal! And when it comes to highly polished technically proficient Finnish metal, you can't get much better than Stratovarius! Longtime fans of the band already know that their guitarist Timo Tolkki departed last year; his replacement, Matias Kupianen, has ample chops, as they say, and an equally novel name! For fun I like to play this for people in my car and ask them what year they think it was recorded! When they try to guess, I simply look them in the eye and say nothing! It's, like, really fun!
Gary Lewis & The Playboys: The Complete Liberty Singles (Collectors' Choice) Anyone who lived through the '60s heard Gary Lewis & The Playboys cranking out hit after hit on the radio for years, and as the liner notes to this superb 2-CD collection point out, those hits often raced the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys to the top of the charts. Why does that seem so hard to believe now? Maybe because they've effectively been written out of rock history by rock critic goons who deemed them uncool in retrospect! Darn those goons! But if you want to hear a fantastic collection of top-notch songs played by some of the best musicians in the business--not the actual Playboys, but the completely fabulous session men on every track--you've got to pick this up! Among the hits: "This Diamond Ring," "Count Me In," Save Your Heart For Me," "Everybody Loves A Clown" and many, many more. Forty-five tracks in all, including "Doin' The Flake," and a welcome look back at Rock's Secret History! Taste the magnificence!
Procol Harum: In Concert With The Danish National Concert Orchestra & Choir DVD (Eagle) Speaking of time travel, you may enjoy this live performance set from England's Procol Harum, which captures the band in 2006--when they are effectively longtime singer Gary Brooker plus backing band--as well as the "bonus" footage of an earlier version of the band performing six tracks on Danish TV in 1974. It's a fine array of songs--extending back to "A Whiter Shade Of Pale," of course--and Brooker is in fine voice during both segments. Once had lunch with him and his songwriting pal Keith Reid in the '80s and--not to tell tales out of school--find this performance of "Sympathy For The Hard Of Hearing" especially appropriate! Could you repeat that, please?
Black Moth Super Rainbow: Eating Us (Graveface) Produced by David Fridmann, who produces nearly every band who's any good, the Black Moth Super Rainbow's new album is fabulously psychedelic and something you should buy at your earliest opportunity! Incidentally, I happened to look at this one's cover!

Woke up to our little part of the world covered in ice. Man I hate freezing rain. Hope I don't fall and break a hip walking to work later.
Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #17 - Robert Venditti (writer) Ethan Van Sciver (art) Jason Wright (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters). Ganthet and Sayd attempt to resurrect something using Kyle's white ring and Saint Walker's blue ring. It felt very much like a religious experience. That's why I was surprised by the low key outcome.
Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #5 - Gerry Conway (writer) Nathan Stockman (art) Jesus Aburtov (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). I liked the new artist but he made the kids look a few years younger than the last artist. This version of Sandman with the Yogi Berra language fowl-ups was a hoot.
Action Comics #976 - Dan Jurgens (writer) Doug Mahnke (pencils) Jaime Mendoza, Christian Alamy & Trevor Scott (inks) Wil Quintana (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). Doug draws a pretty creepy Mxyzptlk too. There's mention of a malevolent super powerful entity this issue but we'll have to wait to see what that is. I'm glad that we wind up with just the one version of Lois, Clark and Jonathan after all was said and done.
Iron Fist #1 - Ed Brisson (writer) Mike Perkins (art) Andy Troy (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). Jeez, ripping off Bruce Lee much? From the "Game of Death" costume redesign to the "Enter the Dragon" tournament this new book was so full of kung-fu clichés that I rolled my eyes several times. If the Netflix TV series is as bad as this I don't think I'll watch it. I've been a fan of Iron Fist since his first appearance in Marvel Premiere #15 back in 1974. I can still see the panel drawn by Gil Kane where the wolves attack Daniel's mother and she sacrifices herself to save her son. This started promising enough with Danny looking for his lost power but then things deteriorated. I liked the lighter Danny Rand in the Power Man and Iron Fist series. This guy is depressing. If you've never seen a Bruce Lee movie and like dark brooding heroes beating up bad guys then knock yourself out.
Wonder Woman #19 - Greg Rucka (writer) Liam Sharp (art) Laura Martin (colours) Jodi Wynne (letters). In part 3 of "The Truth" the institutionalised Diana finally comes to her senses and learns the truth. The last panel will shock you.
Elektra #2 - Matt Owens (writer) Juann Cabal (art) Antonio Fabela (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Here's another Marvel character whose personality has changed. Elektra used to be the strong silent type, now she could be a girl's BFF. This turns out to be a straightforward surviving Arcade's Murderworld plot but with the super villain Screwball added to spice things up. Elektra versus Screwball might be fun to see.
Detective Comics # 953 - James Tynion IV (writer) Christian Duce & Fernando Blanco (art) Alex Sinclair with Allen Passalaqua (colours) Sal Cipriano (letters). If you think Lady Shiva is the main big bad of this story then part 3 of "League of Shadows" will make you think again. Even though Shiva isn't the main villain, I like her a lot more than who shows up on the last page.
Star Wars Darth Maul #2 - Cullen Bunn (writer) Luke Ross (art) Nolan Woodard (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Here's what I don't get; what the heck are the bad guys going to do with that item being auctioned off? I'll find out eventually I hope.
Spider-Gwen #18 - Jason Latour (writer) Robbi Rodriguez (art) Rico Renzi (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). Will they or won't they? I've been following this little love story to see if Miles and Gwen get together in the end and I'm happy to report that this conclusion to "Sitting in a Tree" was very satisfying. Seeing Peter Porker, the Amazing Spider-Ham was a bonus.
Unworthy Thor #5 - Jason Aaron (writer) Olivier Coipel, Kim Jacinto & Pascal Alixe (art) Mat Lopes & Jay David Ramos (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). What an amazing final issue to this mini. We finally find out what Nick Fury whispered to Thor to make him unworthy of wielding Mjolnir and we get teased by a new Thor. I hope we don't have long to wait to find out who War Thor is. I've loved this hero since the Lee/Kirby days. Walt Simonson rejuvenated the character in the eighties and Jason Aaron has made him his own now, and I am loving Thor even more.
Hulk #4 - Mariko Tamaki (writer) Nico Leon (art) Matt Milla (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). She-Hulk fans who are looking for her to smash stuff may be disappointed by this book so far but I am loving it. My favourite thing about this character is Jen's civilian identity as a lawyer. Here we have Jen desperately trying to save a client but there's only so much she can do legally. Those other fans may enjoy the next issue because it looks like Jen's alter ego will have to help.
Invincible Iron Man #5 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Stefano Caselli (art) Marte Gracia (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). This was a very pleasant team-up with Pepper Potts/ Rescue, with the good guys winning the day. I would love to see Riri join The Champions.

Friday 17th March sees the introduction of the final member of Netflix ambitious Defender’s series. Like always, I am super excited and have written some key information to give fans a little info on the newest Netflix character before you watch the show.
The Comics/Background
Iron Fist came from Marvel Comics during a pop culture trend in the early to mid-1970s that focused on martial arts heroes.
He channels the power of the Iron Fist, which allows him to summon and focus his chi energy (also called natural energy or life-force energy) to enhance his natural abilities to extraordinary levels. His strength, speed, stamina, durability, agility, reflexes and senses can all be greatly intensified.
He is able to concentrate his own chi and the superhuman energy into his hand, manifesting as a supernatural glow around his hand and fist. So concentrated, this “iron fist” can strike with superhuman force and impact, while his hand becomes impervious to pain and injury. He can focus his chi inward to heal himself or outward to heal others from injury, as well as to give himself psychic senses and to telepathically fuse his consciousness with another person. He is also a skilled acrobat, gymnast, and a master of all of K’un Lun’s martial arts, as well as various fighting styles from Earth.
Iron Fist debuted in a story written by Roy Thomas and penciled by Gil Kane in the title Marvel Premiere #15-25 (May 1974 – October 1975), he was then worked on by some of Marve’ls best including Len Wein, , Tony Isabella, and Chris Claremont, Arvell Jones, and, in some of his earliest professional work, John Byrne. Matt Faction also took on Iron Fist several years ago to great success.
Iron Fist was a success and immediately spun off into the solo series, which ran 15 issues before facing cancellation.
To rescue the character from this fate, Marvel paired Iron Fist with another exploitation character who was no longer popular enough to sustain his own series, Luke Cage. The two characters were partnered in a three-part story in Cage’s series Power Man #48-50. The title of the series changed to Power Man and Iron Fist with issue #50 in early 1978. It would go on to become a popular and the two would remain a team for decades to follow.
With that brief over view, let us delve into the characters back story. Entrepreneur Wendell Rand discovered the mystical city of K’un-L’un when he was 13. During his time there, Wendell saved the life of the city’s ruler, Lord Tuan, and was adopted as Tuan’s son. When Wendell eventually left K’un L’un and made his fortune in the United States, he married socialite Heather Duncan and they had a son Daniel.
Wendell later organizes an expedition to again seek out K’un L’un, taking his wife, his shady and jealous business partner Harold Meachum and nine-year-old Daniel. During the journey up the mountain, Meachum betrays Wendell resulting him to plummet to his death and then tries to blackmail Heather but she refuses his advances.
Later, wolves set upon Heather and Daniel. Heather throws herself on the wolves to save Daniel and is killed. Archers from K’un L’un save the grieving boy to see Yü-Ti, the hooded ruler of K’un L’un. When Daniel expresses his desire for vengeance, Yü-Ti apprentices him to Lei Kung, the Thunderer, who teaches him the martial arts.
Daniel Rand proves to be the most gifted of Lei Kung’s students. Rand conditions his fists by plunging them into buckets of sand, gravel, and rock to toughen them. At 19, Daniel is given the chance to attain the power of the Iron Fist by fighting and defeating the dragon Shou-Lao, the Undying who guards the molten heart that had been torn from its body. Guessing that the heart provides life energy to Shou-Lao through the dragon-shaped scar on its chest. Daniel covers the scar with his own body and hangs on until Shou-Lao collapses and dies, in the process burning a dragon tattoo into his own chest. Having killed Shou-Lao, he enters its cave and plunges his fists into a brazier containing the creature’s molten heart, emerging with the power of the Iron Fist. It is later revealed that Daniel is part of a long lineage of Iron Fists.
When K’un L’un reappears on Earth after 10 years, Daniel leaves to find his father’s killer. He also swells the ranks of New York heroes. Most famously teaming up with Luke Cage, his best and oldest friend. He has also been an Avenger and stood in as Daredevil when the need required, Matt Murdoch also being a close friend.
His villains were usually the same as those Luke Cage faced, Shades Alvarez and John Bushmaster. Sabretooth was also an opponent several times in his superhero career. The major villains specific to Iron Fist were Meachum, Steel Serpent and Master Khan.
Steel Serpent is an exiled son of K’un L’un, who covets the Power of the Iron Fist. MasterKahn is a wicked sorcerer of K’un L’un who also wishes to destroy the power of the Iron Fist in order to take over the world.
Iron Fist was very one dimensional in his early days, which can also be said about Luke Cage. Yet these past 12 years or so both characters have really come into their own. Danny becoming a darker character in the modern world of comics. Teaming him with Cage all them years ago was a stroke of genius. It made me take notice because I love Luke Cage. It also kept both him and Luke relevant until they were worked on in the early 2000’s. It provided an odd couple of sorts as one was a mystical martial arts billionaire and the other was a jive talking, unbreakable ex con from the hood.
Danny’s money and company played the role of Tony Stark and Stark Industries would when Iron Man wasn’t around. His company does everything and foots the bill when needed. This also created some great drama for Luke and Danny and touched upon themes of class and wealth.
The Show
The series looks very much like it will focus on the origin, and will incorporate the Meachum family. It doesn’t look like Harold Meachum played by David Wernham will be responsible for their deaths…but you never know. It looks more as if he is just in charge of the company and has dealing tied up with Madame Gao.
Madame Gao first appeared on Daredevil and her heroine symbol shows the sign of the Steel Serpent. Once again I am not sure if they are going to follow the comics and have that be an actual person or be a criminal organization. One thing is for sure though, Rand Corp. under Meachum is corrupt. I am still not clear on who the enemies he is fighting are. They seem to be of martial arts backgrounds.
We also meet a key player in the form of Coleen Wing who, in the comics, is best friend with Misty Knight from Luke Cage. She appears to be the love interest of Danny in the show. In the comics Misty is Danny’s long time lover. Claire Temple also appears and as we know she is currently dating Luke Cage…..we are almost there….
From what I have seen in the trailers there is talk of destiny and stopping the evil and Danny taking his true place. We are also shown lots of martial arts and a mixture of eastern and western culture. Very much like the other three Netflix shows. Danny Rand is part way through his story and we will be treated to flashbacks to fill in the pieces. I also do not think he knows Luke Cage yet.
If I am being honest it looks very much like a 2000’s marital arts action film from the trailers. I thought they might go down a more mystical approach, especially with K’un L’un and bring it into the Netflix shows. Especially since we have seen the hand and have had the seeds of magic and necromancy teased in Daredevil. Again though this is speculation there is 13 episodes so a lot can happen.
I am looking forward to this show, Iron Fist is a god character and if done right could be a breath of fresh air. The martial arts and mystical aspects if played up can add a new dimension to the Netflix shows and ease viewers into some of the events sure to take place in Daredevil series 3.
The Final Defender: Who is Iron Fist? Friday 17th March sees the introduction of the final member of Netflix ambitious Defender's series. Like always, I am super excited and have written some key information to give fans a little info on the newest Netflix character before you watch the show.
