It's stink and rot day at preschool and Yuri and the gang brought stinky things for this occasion. Hina brought the stinkiest item. Its expired surstromming with moldy and stinky cheese🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢. It was soooooo stinky and smelly the kids passed out even Yuri can't take the smell. Hina won and got a prize. Ataru's so proud 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺. This is inspired by the rot episode from the magic school bus.

So, just what is “Sítio do Picapau Amarelo”?

Well, if I’m gonna start this blog off on the right foot, then I might as well answer this question. I’m mostly gonna focus on the cartoon, since that’s the one I actually give a rat’s keister about.

Sítio do Picapau Amarelo is a cartoon made by Rodrigo Castilho, 2DLab and Mixer Films for Rede Globo, based off the books by Monteiro Lobato. It premiered in 2012, and (I think) ended in 2017 (that’s what Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit, has told me).

It’s about this funky farm where crazy things happen, like an ear of corn that likes books, or a one-legged elf boy that gets around by spinning Crash Bandicoot-style, where you can go anywhere or anywhen if you have a handful of magic sand, where a crocodile witch can have a full head of hair.

The show stars Pedrinho, Narizinho and Emília, 2 kids and a talking doll that go on many wacky adventures, anywhere from the mundane (like making a kite) to the fantastical (like joining a gang of ghost pirates).

As it turns out, the show isn’t just based on the books, it was also essentially a reboot of the 2001 live-action series, which I would watch, except it’s not subbed anywhere so I don’t know how much I would get out of it and also it has this thing in it

Apparently, the cartoon takes more from the show than the books, which is good become from the research I’ve done, the books are fucked. They’ve got shit like cannibalism, minotaur birthing, poaching and painfully outdated stereotypes. Legit, there’s one book where Emília accidentally shrinks the human race, and there’s accounts of people being eaten by animals or being suffocated by their own clothing. So, again, no thank you, I’ll just stick to the funny drawings.

There was also a weird Master System game based on the books, released by Sega and Tectoy in 1997 (that’s right, the same year as Diddy Kong Racing and Crash Bandicoot 2), maybe I’ll review that sometime.

The cartoon ran for 3 seasons on both Globo and Cartoon Network in Brazil, where it’s gathered its fair share of notoriety. Sadly, it’s relatively obscure elsewhere, America in particular. Sure, you can have the odd thread over on /co/ once in a while, but it usually won’t last long. I was lucky to have one last year where I got this gem:

That’s honestly part of the reason I’ve started this blog. I love this show, and I want nothing more than to talk about it and share my love for it with you all. Hey, if a bunch of people can freak out over gay space rocks and pasta-loving skeletons, then I can indulge in a cartoon about a talking rag doll being cute and also an idiot.

So, join me on this magical journey as I talk the talk, squawk the squawk and meme the meme all about this fascinating little show. I think I’ll start off with some liveblogs of the show (I’ve only just recently seen most of Season 1, Seasons 2 and 3 are still sort of new to me).

P.S. As this point in the post, I should make it clear that I don’t speak a lick of Portuguese (I can barely speak Spanish, a very similar language), so I’ve had to watch this show subbed. How, you may ask? Well, a kind fellow who goes by the name of “Boneco” subbed the entire series and put them all in a Mega folder. You can find his Blogspot and the MEGA here (be warned, the first two seasons are .mkv files, so you’ll need a special player to use them, I recommend Elmedia Player as it plays all kinds of weird video files, and it’s FREE).

There’s something about this Cartoon Network SDPA promo I love. The fact that they made new animation just for this. I feel like Cartoon Network liked SDPA more than Rede Globo, to the point where Season 3 aired exclusively on CN because apparently Rede Globo decided to drop children’s programming in 2015 (again, that’s what Wikipedia tells me, so I could be totally wrong). I wonder who did that animation; it can’t be 2DLab (who did the show) because Aunt Nastácia is completley static here.
