Black Women in the Animating World
In a previous blog, Black Women Animate, founded by Taylor Shaw, was discussed and upon revisiting the field of animation, this blog will be taking shorter previews of various Black women in the animating world. By no means an autobiography of these individuals, this blog will act as a means of bringing to light multiple talented animators and artists, bringing attention to their work and ventures in animation, but condensed into short snippets.

Pilar Newton is the CEO and founder of PilarToons, LLC, a production company that specializes in animation, illustration, and design based in Brooklyn, New York. Newton graduated with a degree from Rhode Island School of Design and has worked on a number of projects, from Cartoon Network’s Courage the Cowardly Dog to MTV’s Daria, and is currently pursuing a master’s degree at the School of Visual Arts. Her company has worked with companies such as Homer Learning, Sirius Thinking, Nickelodeon, Ted-Ed, Search Films, Story Corp, as well as others.

Mia Lee is a Chicago-based artist who has had work featured on Adult Swim and whose portfolio includes designs for Nike, Kith, and Timberland. She has met with multiple executives in animation and production making sure to meet with those who want to hear from young people of color. She is a newcomer to the animating world but is already making waves through her artistry and networking talent, landing her jobs and even allowing herself to pursue successful passion projects picked up by famous networks.

Monique Henry-Hudson was born and raised in Queens, New York, and has used her community as inspiration for her work. After being asked to create the “Black in Animation” panel for Blerd City Con in Brooklyn in 2018, she became the founder of DiverseToons, an organization that highlights women of color in multi-media. DiverseToons works at emphasizing the importance of diversity in the animation industry and provides a platform for Black artists and people of color to share their passions and career experiences while also giving resources to their communities. DiverseToons has also partnered with Women in Animation’s Student Branch in 2018, connected even more women and non-binary people of color in animation.

Sonya Carey has cemented herself in technical animation and is considered the only Black woman to do so. Her past credits include Disney’s The Princess and the Frog,” “The Proud Family,” and “Winnie the Pooh,” and she is positioned as the leader of her team as Head of Studio Operations at Portfolio Entertainment in Toronto. After high school, she moved to Los Angeles then got married when she finished college. After getting married, couldn’t work for a year and during that year, she got a computer and did desktop animations for fun, unknowingly catapulting her career in the industry. These desktop animations resulted in her taking classes at UCLA and ultimately getting a job at MetroLight Studios working on “Ren and Stimpy,” the beginning of her famous career. She then ran the digital side of the company Toon Boom for ten years then moved onto 3D animation for ToonBox before going back to 2D at Portfolio Entertainment. She also ran her own studio for some time called Make a Scene.

Carole Holliday works as a storyboard artist, director, and is the founder of Crowded Metro Films. She attended the California Institute of the Arts and graduated with a BFA in animation, pursuing storyboarding with her degree. She has worked on films “Oliver and Company” (1988) and “The Little Mermaid” (1989) as an animation assistant before starting her career in storyboarding with “A Goofy Movie” (1995) while also being a story artist for “The Pince of Egypt” (1998) and “Tarzan” (1999). She has also worked as a character design supervisor and moved up to directing an animated short for DisneyToon Studio’s “Mickey’s Twice Upon a Christmas.” More recently, she has done storyboard revisions on Disney’s “Sofia the First,” and has been working on storybooks. She even has her own profile on the official Walt Disney website for all of the work she has done with them.

Lisette Titre-Montgomery is a video game artist and designer who graduated with a degree in computer animation from Miami International University of Art and Design in 2000. She was inspired to study computer animation after watching “Toy Story” (1995) and decided to go to school for it. Her first animation job was working as a character model for the game Freekstyle which helped her land a job as a senior character and special effects artist at EA Games in around 2005. She then worked on games like Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2007 and helped developed The Simpsons Game, The Godfather II, and Dante’s Inferno. She ultimately left EA Games in 2011 and went on to become the lead artist at Blackbone Entertainment where she worked on Zombie Apocalypse: Never Die Alone and Midway Arcade Origins. Titre-Montgomery later returned to EA Games in 2013 to work on games like Dance Central 3 and The Sims 4. She then started working as the manager of the art and computer animation department for the company Ubisoft in around 2015. Titre-Montgomery was also invited to the White House LGBTQ Tech and Innovation Briefing in 2016 and the following year became the art manager at Double Fine Productions, working on Psychonauts 2. Lisette Titre-Montgomery is also a member of Blacks in Gaming which is a nonprofit networking and collaboration group for African Americans in the gaming industry.
Although this blog does not go as in-depth into these trendsetters, game-changers, or trail-blazers in the animation community as it should, it acts as a small list of Black women animators that has made big waves in the industry as a whole. Their work in the field has allowed countless young women of color to believe that they can achieve their dreams in animation and allow them to have role models to look up to as inspiration. There may not be nearly as many Black female animators but the number is slowly growing and they are leaving their print on animation as a whole and that should be paid attention to.

Together with Blacklist and a crew of otherworldly talents from around the world, we created the teaser, launch film, and global Nike in-store installations. We built an A-list team for the project that included one of our award-winning HIGH5ER studios, Frame, to co-direct. What was totally unique about the project for us was the global collaboration. Blacklist is in NY, Tendril in Toronto, Frame in Denmark, Nike in Portland, and there was a slew of freelance gurus dotted all over the world. In total we had Canada, US, Brazil, Germany, Slovenia, Denmark and the UK all on this project. This made it an explosion of deadly talents. We all worked together hooked up by a massive 2TB Dropbox account.
Besides the amazing team who we had the pleasure of collaborating with, shout-outs to Google Hangouts, Sheets, Slack, Dropbox, continental airline travel, coffee, and beer for helping make this other-worldly experience a pain-free collaboration.

Axis is an animation and VFX Studio with a plethora of prestigious awards under their belt including Bafta and Emmy awards. They have collaborated with many big studios such as HBO, Netflix, Universal and Microsoft Studios. Situated within the UK in cities including Glasgow, London and Bristol. Also boasting an international team of directors, designers, artists and animators working in conjunction across its studios.
I found the body of work Axis has to be extremely diverse. Truly a jack of all trade studio specialising in Film, Television, Games and Theme Parks.

When I began researching UK based animation studios, I wanted to find a studio that specialised in 2D, the animation technique I am most comfortable with at this current stage in my career. Following this was my discovery of Kong Studio. Kong is a London based animation and illustration studio, made up with a talented team of directors, animators, scriptwriters and illustrators.
Although starting in 2D, Kong now also works in a variety of styles, mediums and techniques all with the goal of delivering crafted illustration and animation across various branded content, entertainment and prints. Kong has the goal to immerse themselves in the details and to bring the stories they create to life. They consider themselves not just artists, but also storytellers. Some of their clientele include Intel, Disney, BBC Ideas and IMAX.

For the past 16+ years Boulder Media has been involved in producing some of the most well-known award-winning animated shows. Shows that I myself have grown up watching. Established in 2000 and setting up shop in Dublin, Boulder media have gone on to become one of Irelands largest animation studios. Working alongside companies such as Cartoon Network, BBC and Disney UK to create such shows like Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends. The Amazing World of Gumball and currently in production Danger Mouse.

Brown Bag studios has a diverse body of work in 2D, 3D and VFX. They were founded in Dublin, Ireland in 1994 and went on to grow into studios located around the world in places such as Dublin, Toronto, Manchester and LA.
Their creative vision is a focus on producing the highest quality, cross platform animation with strong stories and engaging characters.  Brown Bag studios have a body of work I recognise solely because of having nieces and nephews. I’ve chosen to talk about this studio due to that fact. The smiles that this studio has brought my nieces and nephews growing up, and finding out the people who have created those simple moments of joy for them was based in my backyard really surprised me and seeded my interest. The studios have had their hand in creating some of the most much-loved TV shows viewed by millions of children worldwide. Including the likes of Bing, Doc McStuffins, Peter Rabbit and the Octonauts. Brown Bag studios love animation so much they’ve even trademarked the phrase “We Love Animation™.”

Ritaban Das is a character designer, storyboard artist and illustrator working in the animation industry for the last decade. Q. How do you differentiate your approach between the roles of character designer, storyboard artist and illustrator?
Ritaban Das: At the end of the day it’s all interconnected; it all comes down to ‘story’. When I design a character, I start by thinking about what kind of personality the character has and their role in the story. I think about what I’m trying to communicate through the illustration. This helps me to figure out poses and expressions. As I’m drawing, I’m thinking about shapes, proportions and appeal. I also think about the composition of the illustration. When I make storyboards, I’m telling a story in motion by acting out the characters in them.

Q. What have been the greatest lessons you’ve learnt professionally and personally in your ten years of experience?
Ritaban Das: Draw what you like and the rest will fall into place. Only you know what motivates you.
Q. How did you find your calling to be an artist and, thereafter, how did you nurture your skills to hone your craft?
Ritaban Das: I’ve been drawing for as long as I remember and I’m always very passionate about it. To be very honest, I sucked at studies and my parents knew that very well. I remember spending most of my time with a box of chalk and slate gifted to me by my father. Like every other child, I also loved to sketch my favourite cartoons. I usually sketched these animated characters on the back pages of all my notebooks and also my classmates’ notebooks. It made me known amongst my seniors for my sketches.
That’s the only thing I was good at which I followed blindly. Honing my craft came from lots of practice. I draw almost every day. I also follow and study other artists’ work. Reading or watching their interviews, where they describe their work processes and the likes, helped me a lot to grow as an artist over the years. I try to open my eyes and ears to absorb everything.

Q. Could you take us through your process of how you envision a character and then execute it practically?
Ritaban Das: Being a Character Designer, most of my work is very much character-driven, blended with humour and very graphical too. I always try to convey some sort of story through every character or Illustration I make. I like to play with various shapes and silhouettes and usually keep things simple.
The character design process is, in a way, a combination of different things. I ask myself ‘Who am I drawing? What is his/her personality?’ I sometimes look at influential artists’ work to get some ideas or even start from a drawing I like and translate it into my style. Then, trying to forget those influences, I often start from scratch with a basic shape such as the face as it determines the rest of the character for me, then the body (this can be a circle, oval or even a pear shape – it all depends on the personality of the character I want to draw).

Q. Could you please elaborate on your current pursuit of higher studies and how you came to choose Canada for it?
Ritaban: I completed my studies at Humber College in 3D modelling & VFX and Graphic Design and got a job in an animation studio called House of Cool as a Story artist. I’m working on a very exciting project which will probably start airing next year.
I’ve always been well aware of the Canadian animation industry from the beginning and the kind of projects they do. I worked on a bunch of Canadian animation projects back in India.
We used to do a lot of outsourcing for studios here like Big Jump and Brown Bag Films. Canada’s animation industry always attracted me in terms of work culture, the kind of content they nurture, and the quality they produce, so I want to be a part of it.

Ritaban: Animation is important because it enables us to tell stories and communicate emotions and ideas in a unique, easy-to-perceive way that both children and adults can understand. Animation has helped connect people throughout the world in a way that sometimes writing and live-action films cannot.
Today, anyone can pick up a drawing tablet and show their ideas to the world. Drawn figures can be funny, sad or serious. It can have a playful, less intimidating feel to it to make the viewer feel more comfortable. Often, it has simply served as a way to make a heart-warming story that makes you think.
Through live-action movies, people can form biases based on the appearance and real-life personality of an actor playing a character. But as an animated character, the character feels like their own being.

Ritaban: Every project is challenging in different ways. The challenging ones are the projects where clients don’t have a clear understanding of their audience and outcome, goals or don’t have an investment or hierarchy for arriving at a consensus on feedback. The most challenging projects always boil down to size and scope and managing a team to produce the animation. Also, animating subject matter that I’m not interested in is challenging. But at the end of the day, we all survive because we all just love what we do.

Q. Could you take us through your process of creating a storyboard and highlight its most important aspects?
Ritaban: Whether you’re working on a commercial TV spot, web video, or film, storyboards are an effective way to quickly tell a story. A storyboard is a sequence of drawings that represent the shots planned for video production. It covers all of the major shots, angles and action of your film. The very first step is to read your script and visualise it as an audience would. As I go from scene to scene, I analyse the screenplay and decide how I want each scene to look.
A script breakdown tells you what storyboards you need to create. Then I start doing the rough thumbnails with all the necessary camera angles in Photoshop and chalk out the entire scene I’m planning to do. The important thing is to give anyone who looks at the storyboard a sense of space — where are the objects in relation to the space they’re standing in.
Once I finish locking the scene on thumbnail level, I pitch it to my art director or creative director and take their feedback. After passing the thumbnail phase, I start making the rough staging in Storyboard Pro and work on the required actions and move forward with the scene for the final animation. I might have to rework scenes over and over, combining different elements of the iterations until I finally have what the team is looking for.

Ritaban Das : Whether I work in any studio or as a freelancer, I always listen to what clients need. Listening to your client will help you understand and retain the information you’re already receiving, even if it isn’t a formal meeting. You need to ask questions to identify needs and paraphrase what they say. It helps with clarification and to enhance your understanding of their needs.
Also, I bring new ideas to the table. I don’t hesitate to propose something other than what the client had in mind. You may have a better service in mind and, if nothing else, this again shows you’re listening and attempting to understand your client’s needs. Understanding client needs is one of the biggest challenges of any business but also one of the most important and rewarding tasks.

So what drew you (heh) to animation?
In high school, I was really into art and comics - and then I took a class on filmmaking, and I really loved it. Once I realized that animation was like the marriage of drawing and filmmaking, I was hooked. I went to Sheridan for fine arts for 2 years, then to Seneca for their 2D animation program.
What inspired “One Hell of a Party”?
In 1st year, I got sick with the flu, and one night really couldn’t sleep with a fever. So I was just laying awake, being really nice to myself and thinking about how I would never manage to come up with a whole story - I always think in shots, or scenes, but hadn’t ever thought of a real narrative. And then I just decided to do it, right then, fever brain and all. I thought about what I like, and I like demons. I thought about what you do with demons: you summon them. And I just kept like that, and by the end of the night, I had all of the story beats figured out. Then I held onto the idea super tight for 2 years, until 3rd year came around, when I pitched it to my class. And it was one of the ones we decided to make!
How did you decide you wanted to be a board artist?
I knew I wanted to board really early on. I mean, comics and films are my two favorite things! So I focused on it as much as I could in school, and there was some compromise involved. At one point, I just straight up didn’t do my assignment for board class, and brought my professor the boards that I was doing for an internship application. I was like “Well, I have this!” and he was just like, “Ah! This is great”. I got lucky.
That’s badass! Sounds like you had cool teachers?
Oh yeah - my boarding professors played a really important role. One of my most memorable moments was at the end of 1st year, actually. I had the BEST storyboard professor - super passionate about boarding, really cool, and loves teaching. I brought some stuff to him that I was working on, and was talking about how I knew that I wasn’t ready to apply to some position yet - and he just goes, “Oh I don’t think that’s true”. I was just like, “Whhaaa?”. He said that in a couple years, he thought I could be boarding professionally. It was the first time that anyone had said, “You can do this” to me - it was a moment that kept me going through school, and that I still carry with me. Oddly, it was my boarding professors who encouraged me to go for it - my teachers in other subjects said it was too hard.
Oof! Speaks to the power of discouragement… what else can you recommend to budding boarders?
Definitely keeping up with the best people who are working professionally, because it gives you a sense of the caliber of work that’s required.. Know what a professional board looks like (and they can look really diverse!) and research how board artists got where they are. Also, asking a lot of questions - your professors want to help you, and mentors are really important!  And lastly: don’t give up! It is really hard, really time consuming, and really competitive - but you know that going in. The fact is, it’ll never happen for you if you quit - and if you don’t quit, others will, while you keep improving - and then there will be better odds that it does happen for you then that it doesn’t!
Tactical! Enough work stuff, let’s talk parties. Does the short accurately depict Seneca’s scene?
Ha, I wouldn’t really know! I didn’t go to a single party the entire time we were working on “One Hell of a Party”! Sweet irony. The film definitely represents parties I’ve gone to - when I’ve done that sorta thing. Drinking just kinda makes me sleepy.
Saw you’re a D&D fan though! Any go-to character you play?
I’m usually a ranger, but lately I’ve been a DM, so I’m making up characters! I just created this awakened undead skeleton named Rook, who’s a very cheerful, pretty innocent sweetheart, for a skeleton. He gained sentience and came to hate the necromancer who brought him back to life to be a slave, so he ran away, learned magic, and then got revenge on his old master. Now he’s joining the story - my players just met him - but I can’t wait to play as him in another game!
Has DMing helped you with your storytelling skills?
Oh yeah - it’s helped me take a step back and approach humor in a new way, too! Like I listen to Critical Role and Adventure Zone, these D&D podcasts, and they’ve really influenced my comedy sense. Like laughing along with these guys, I wound up asking myself ‘Why do I find this stuff funny, and other stuff not?’. I’d never thought of comedy as something that you learn, but it really is! I’m honing my own sense of humor, getting a handle on it.
What are some elements, comedic or other, that you would bring to your own cartoon series?
I’m really interested in character acting - I love when characters have distinct ways of moving. I think there’s so much you can tell about a character through how they move. One of my favorite shows that does it so well is actually “Baman Piderman” - their characters feel more alive because of the attention put into their mannerisms.
“Baman Piderman” is a modern masterpiece. Any other favorite shows?
Oh geez, that’s a tough one. There are a lot. “Gravity Falls” - Alex Hirsch is a huge inspiration for me. “Fullmetal Alchemist” - both, though I like “Brotherhood” just a bit more. “The Misadventures of Flapjack”, “Rick and Morty”, “Steven Universe”, “Mob Psycho 100”, “Transformers Prime” - the 3d TV series - I like the “Transformers” franchise except for the movies.
What about favorite artists or writers or sundry creative humans?
Ahh! Okay, there’s so many. Ok: so Alex Hirsch for sure. James Roberts, a writer for IDW Transformers comics. Matthew Mercer inspired me to start DMing, and I’ve learned a ton about story from him. Dana Terrace, an incredible board artist / is amazing at everything. And Jenn Strickland, another awesome board artist and animator! Christine Liu and Lauren Sassen are two more amazing board artists. There’s Alan Ituriel (created “Villainous”) and Jhonen Vasquez who created “Invader Zim,” the first cartoon I was ever obsessed with. JN Wiedle is an awesome cartoonist and comics artist, and Bahi JD and Yutaka Nakamura are some of my favorite animators. I’m also super influenced by “Akira” and Studio Ghibli’s films!
Last query! Whatcha workin’ on?
Well aside from my work-work, I’ve got quite a bit going on! I’m developing two web comic ideas, and I’m doing the art for a comic called “The Goosefighter,” written by Marilyn-Ann Campbell, for Toronto Comics Anthology Vol. 5. It’s about a student who has a stand-off with a goose - so it’s about looking evil right in the face. Up my alley!

Why I Learned Storyboarding from Mike Kunkel
Animation Mentor: Tell us a bit about yourself!
Amanda: I got into the industry because I loved Looney Tunes. I thought I wanted to be an animator actually, but once I got my first job in 3D layout, I fell in love with it. When I’m not doing visual storytelling at work, I’m usually watching movies at home or practicing my verbal storytelling through D&D. When I want to switch up my creative outlets, I sew and when I start spending too much time hermitting in my apartment, my dog pulls me out of the house.
AM: Where do you currently work and what do you do?
Amanda: I’m a 3D layout and previs artist working in Toronto at Guru Animation Studio.
AM: What’s the most challenging project you’ve ever worked on at work and why?Amanda: We worked on a preschool show called Justin Time when I first started there and it was challenging because it was a hybrid 2D/3D show so you had to be really careful with the camera moves so you didn’t skew anything on screen.AM: What made you decide to take Storyboarding Fundamentals?Amanda: I’ve always loved storytelling and with my work in layout I’ve come to know visual storytelling rather well. Learning storyboarding seemed like a natural branch off from that kind of work so I was curious to try my hand in not only a completely 2D drawing experience but also getting to experience what it’s like to work without any visual guide for shots like I have in layout
.AM: What did you learn from the workshop?Amanda: The biggest thing I learned was how much one drawing can expression. If you plan it well and have strong posing, you can give the audience all kinds of information about what’s going on, even if it’s adding something to the background. The next biggest thing I learned is that actions require more frames of drawing than I expected, but it’s worth the effort in order to be clear. Also thumbnails are really worth the time. Quick drawings let you keep the flow of an idea going. Once the idea is out of your head you can go over it and switch things around and edit where you need to.AM: What was it like learning from Mike Kunkel?Amanda: One of my favourite things about Mike was how friendly and down to earth he was. It wasn’t intimidating at all to engage with him nor did it feel abrasive getting critiques from him.
AM: What’s the main thing you learned that you’ll use at work and/or in the future?
Amanda: My current job doesn’t have any drawing aspect to it, but I think I can better understand what a board artist is thinking now when I get their work on a production. It was also a good reminder that there are many ways to tell the same story so feedback can be really eye opening.
AM: What advice would you give students thinking of taking Storyboarding Fundamentals?
Amanda: I think this workshop is great for people who don’t have a lot of knowledge on what storyboarding is like or how many different careers could come from it, but don’t expect to be able to pick up everything you need to get employed as a board artist from this. This is a great course for dipping your toe in the water and seeing if you want to jump in. Also, I talk a lot about what I learned about drawing in this workshop because that was a big part of why I took the course, but Mike’s focus was on teaching us to be clear. It isn’t necessary to have great drawing skills in order to learn from this workshop. He also goes over shot types and some basic film language as well as setting up gags.
AM: What are your storyboarding goals for the future?
Amanda: Right now I just want to try my hand at being a storyboard revisionist, but I did enjoy our assignment on beat boards so I would be curious to explore that too. If I don’t end up getting into storyboarding professionally, I think this experience will help me with my own hobbies, like making short comics.
AM: What kinds of stories would you like to see more of in promotional animation?
Amanda: I’m a big fan of adventure stories and exploring, so more Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider kinds of stories would be awesome to see.
