Indigenous and Ecological Design

Today I have invested my time to learn about indigenous and ecological design. Even though when picking the topic in class I didn't feel like the two are necessarily connected, once I started reading about them I realised that they are strongly interconnected, building upon each other.

In ecological design practices we rely on indigenous design, going back in time, understanding our environment and ways of nature. Furthermore, learning how 'we' used to do it, connecting with the environment and ourselves, giving the ode to the ancestors, or ancestors of other cultures, respecting their heritage and listening in on what they have to say.

Week 6

This week I got to keep doing more of the worldbuilding/flavor assets. That means that in addition to doing artwork, I also got to do some writing!

We needed a gossip magazine to talk about Beverly and Alfred’s marriage, so I made a parody of a specific 1950s tabloid for the game. The headline on the top is a reference to our original game prototype, which I also wrote.

I did some research and found out that in the 1940s, a lot of wedding photos were taken in the back seats of cars. I’m not entirely sure why, but I thought it was a cute detail to include.

We also wanted to have a magazine of Beverly showing her back when she was a model-- a little bit younger, just to show a side of her that we won’t see in the game. 

While I had a lot of fun on this assignment, I don’t think I’ll be able to do something like this again. It was a lot of work, and my tablet broke, which left me really pressured for time. I’m taking a much lighter workload next week.

Context

Mr. John Knightley arrives at Hartfield for a stay of two days; the children will stay “some weeks.” Mr. Weston is unexpectedly summoned to town and must leave.

We know that this occurs the day before the dinner party, as John is staying “forty-eight hours,” including “one full day”; thus he arrives the evening of the day before and leaves the afternoon of the day after the party.

Readings and Interpretations

No Business Like No Business

The reason for Mr. Weston’s summons to London is unclear; unlike Mr. John Knightley, who last year had to “be in town again on the 28th” of December (vol. 1, ch. 9; p. 52) due to his work (most likely as a barrister), Mr. Weston has “realized an easy competence” (vol. 1, ch. 1; p. 9) and retired from his work in trade to lead a “gentlemanly, leisurely” life (Drum, p. 102; see also Hume, p. 55).1 The matter may be personal, or it may be a legal or financial one to do with his estate or his fortune—though Randalls as a “little estate adjoining Highbury” (vol. 1, ch. 1; p. 8) is unlikely to be an agricultural producer as Donwell is.2

David Monaghan points out Emma’s socially responsible reaction to the news: “although she personally laments the loss of Mr Weston, Emma’s main reaction is one of relief that the party is again of a size to suit Mr Woodhouse” (p. 130).

Footnotes

Alice Drum writes that “[o]n his visits to Hartfield […] [Mr. John Knightley] is generally on a tight schedule and required to return to London on specified dates, which suggests the imperatives of the barrister, who must appear in court” (p. 102). This position is “more highly respected” than that of a solicitor (ibid.).

John Knightley, in an indignant reaction to Mr. Weston’s walking to Hartfield on the evening of the 14th that is almost wholly projection of his own routine and desires, considers that Mr. Weston has been gone on “a day of business in London” (vol. 2, ch. 17 [35]; p. 197). This would contradict the idea that Mr. Weston’s life is entirely one of leisure.
