Upsetless AGAIN! I'm tired of blindly deciding!
Based on one news outlet, reception, and performance at the Oscars, I decided with Mister Roberts. Was it the right choice? Who's to say.
Marty boasts the record for the shortest Oscar winner, but still manages to pack its 90 minutes with romance that's not cheesy or boring. It also had a relatively low budget and box office for a winner.
I love Marty. It's so simple, yet so endearing and sweet. After seeing Ernest Borgnine beat the shit out of a guy in From Here to Eternity, it was great to see him play such a soft role. He's just a happy, normal guy looking for love! And he does a wonderful job finding it!
Mister Roberts was the second highest-grossing film of 1955 behind the seemingly unknown Cinerama Holiday. It also had a much larger and recognizable cast, including William Powell (of The Thin Man) in his final acting performance. We'll see Jack Lemmon again soon in one of my favorite Best Picture winners.
I think I had higher hopes for this one. I genuinely enjoyed the humor throughout, which felt timeless and out of place for the 1950s, but the film seemed to lack a strong story. Also coming off of last year's The Caine Mutiny, I'm probably just tired of Navy films.
At the 28th Academy Awards, Marty walked away with 4 of the Big 5, missing out on a Best Actress nom and win. Marty is also one of only 3 Best Picture winners to also win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Mister Roberts took home one Oscar and one additional major award from the Writers Guild.
Both were recognized as Top 10 films of 1955, with Marty also winning Best Film from the NBR. Neither placed in either list of the AFI Top 100.
One new insight as we move into the latter half of the decade is the Director/Editing/Screenplay nom category. These three nominations were seen by all 5 of the films in the 1950s so far, with all 5 also winning for screenplay. Marty missed out on an editing nom, while Mister Roberts received zero of the three nominations.
Take the rest of the insights with a grain of salt, as I chose this film for the Upset. We will eventually see Best Picture Winners earning less at the box office than their peers, but I don't think we're quite there yet.
Unofficial Review: Marty is great. We're ramping up to a span of epics, so having a short, light comedy is really refreshing.

The Fabelmans (2022, Steven Spielberg)
17/03/2024
The Fabelmans is a 2022 American film directed by Steven Spielberg.
The film is a semi-autobiographical story loosely based on Spielberg's adolescence and early years as a director. The plot is told through the original story of the fictional Sammy Fabelman, a young aspiring filmmaker who explores how the power of film can help him see the truth about his dysfunctional family and those around him. It stars Gabriel LaBelle in the role of Sammy, alongside Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen and Judd Hirsch in supporting roles. The film is dedicated to the memories of Spielberg's real-life parents, Leah Adler and Arnold Spielberg, who died in 2017 and 2020, respectively.
Spielberg had conceived the project as early as 1999, with his sister Anne writing a screenplay titled I'll Be Home. Spielberg revisited the project in 2019 with screenwriter and frequent collaborator Kushner while they were making West Side Story, and the script was completed in late 2020.
It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2022, where it won the People's Choice Award. Distributed by Universal Pictures, the film opened theatrically in the United States on November 11, 2022, and then expanded to wide release on November 23, grossing $45.6 million against a $40 million budget, a disappointing result for a film directed and produced by Spielberg. It received largely positive reviews from critics and was named one of the ten best films of 2022 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute. The Fabelmans earned numerous awards and nominations, including seven nominations at the 95th Academy Awards, including seven nominations at the 95th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Williams) and Best Supporting Actor (Hirsch). It also earned 11 nominations at the 28th Critics' Choice Awards, winning Best Young Performer (LaBelle), and five nominations at the 80th Golden Globe Awards, winning Best Motion Picture - Drama and Best Director.

Dame Margaret Natalie Smith, CH, DBE 28th of December, 1934 — 27th of September, 2024
She received numerous accolades, including two Academy Awards, five BAFTA Awards, four Emmy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards and a Tony Award, as well as nominations for six Laurence Olivier Awards. She was one of the few performers to earn the Triple Crown of Acting.
“ Do not be stilled by anger or grief. Burn them both and use that fuel to keep moving. Look up at the clouds and tip your head way back so the roofs of the houses disappear. Keep moving. ” — Dame Maggie Smith in her memoir; You Could Make This Place Beautiful (2023)
"My wife and I were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dame Maggie Smith. As the curtain comes down on a national treasure, we join all those around the world in remembering with the fondest admiration and affection her many great performances and her warmth and wit that shone through both on and off the stage." — King Charles III
"The end of an era of the sheer definition of what it means to be an actor. You created characters that clung to us, moved us, entertained us ...... made us look within. You defied the expectations of age.... crossed generations. You were greatness personified Dame Maggie Smith. 'A lady always knows when it's time to leave' [...] Godspeed ♥️" — Viola Davis
"She was a fierce intellect, a gloriously sharp tongue, could intimidate and charm in the same instant and was, as everyone will tell you, extremely funny... The word legend is overused but if it applies to anyone in our industry then it applies to her." — co-star in Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe
"Maggie Smith was a truly great actress, and we were more than fortunate to be part of the last act in her stellar career. She was a joy to write for, subtle, many-layered, intelligent, funny and heart-breaking. Working with her has been the greatest privilege of my career, and I will never forget her." — Downton Abbey creator, Julian Fellowes
"Maggie Smith was a great woman and a brilliant actress. I still can’t believe I was lucky enough to work with the “one-of-a-kind”. My heartfelt condolences go out to the family … RIP." — co-star in Sister Act & Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit, Whoopi Goldberg
"When I was younger I had no idea of Maggie’s legend – the woman I was fortunate enough to share space with. It is only as I’ve become an adult that I’ve come to appreciate that I shared the screen with a true definition of greatness." — co-star in the Harry Potter film series, Emma Watson
"Heartbroken to hear about Maggie. She was so special, always hilarious and always kind. I feel incredibly lucky to have shared a set with her and particularly lucky to have shared a dance." — co-star in the Harry Potter film series, Rupert Grint
"Anyone who ever shared a scene with Maggie will attest to her sharp eye, sharp wit and formidable talent," on-screen son in Downton Abbey, Hugh Bonneville
"I had the unforgettable experience of working with her; sharing a two-shot was like being paired with a lion. She could eat anyone alive, and often did. But funny, and great company. And suffered no fools. We will never see another. God speed, Ms. Smith!" — co-star in Suddenly, Last Summer, Rob Lowe

“A chance for her to bid a final farewell to Hollywood.. what was she feeling at this moment? Relief that she was no longer part of this bonfire of the vanities? She still looked the part, but was already somehow different.” 22 March 1956. 👎🏻 the last few months in bl land have been the dryest in years lmao it's been a while since I've really been captured by anything. I dropped a few shows this month, some of which are well received by the public but I just can't get into them. The ones that recently ended were not satisfactory either and the only ones I'm enjoying out of the currently airing roster are not bls lol. The anticipation for THK is what keeps me going but even with that we have no guarantee for quality lol. I'm just really craving something good because this year has been pretty sad lol. recommendations are welcome.

AMC Lincoln Square (1998 Broadway). Introduction by Academy Award-nominated, Emmy-winning director Julie Cohen.]
Summary of the film:
"Every Body is a revelatory investigation of the lives of intersex people. The film tells the stories of three individuals who have moved from childhoods marked by shame, secrecy, and non-consensual surgeries to thriving adulthoods after each decided to set aside medical advice to keep their bodies a secret and instead came out as their authentic selves. Actor and screenwriter River Gallo (they/them), political consultant Alicia Roth Weigel (she/they), and Ph.D. student Sean Saifa Wall (he/him) are now leaders in a fast-growing global movement advocating for greater understanding of the intersex community and an end to unnecessary surgeries. Woven into the story is a stranger-than-fiction case of medical abuse, featuring exclusive footage from the NBC News archives, which helps explain the modern-day treatment of intersex people."
I just got back from watching an early screening of this film and it was beautiful, powerful, and meaningful in ways I did not expect! Met so many intersex people in my city and it was just really really, incredible.
Really recommend watching this film for any intersex people. This is the link to rsvp to the free screenings.
The film will also be available in theaters on June 30th.
So, so excited about this!

Maggie Smith, Oscar-winning star of stage and screen, dies aged 89 💔
Dame Maggie Smith, the masterful, scene-stealing actor who won an Oscar for the 1969 film “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” and gained new fans in the 21st century as the dowager Countess of Grantham in “ Downton Abbey” and Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films, died early Friday in a London hospital.
Margaret Natalie Smith was born in Ilford, on the eastern edge of London, on 28th December 1934. Her father was assigned in 1939 to wartime duty in Oxford, where her theatre studies at the Oxford Playhouse School led to a busy apprenticeship.
One of Smith’s most iconic early roles was as Desdemona in Shakespeare's Othello. Laurence Olivier spotted her talent, invited her to be part of his original National Theatre company and cast her as his co-star in a 1965 film adaptation of “Othello.”
Laurence Olivier offered Smith the part opposite his Othello
Smith was frequently rated the preeminent British female performer of a generation with two Oscars, a clutch of Academy Award nominations and a shelf full of acting trophies.
The role that brought Smith international fame came in 1969 when she played the determined non-conformist teacher in the title role of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
The role of Jean Brodie, alongside future husband Robert Stephens, won her an Oscar
The film was adapted from the 1961 novel by Muriel Spark, set in 1930s Edinburgh, and the character was based on the author's inspirational teacher.
"Jean Brodie," in which she played a dangerously charismatic Edinburgh schoolteacher, brought her the Academy Award for best actress, and the British Academy Film Award (BAFTA) as well.
Maggie Smith won critical acclaim for her role as Betsey Trotwood in a BBC adaptation of David Copperfield at the turn of the century. The part also brought her Bafta and Emmy nominations.
She appeared with a young Daniel Radcliffe in David Copperfield.
She starred alongside a young Daniel Radcliffe, who she would later act with again in the Harry Potter films.
In 2001, she took on the role of Professor Minerva McGonagall in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
Dame Magie Smith is known to millions as Professor Minerva McGonagall from Harry Potter. Dame Maggie was reportedly the only actor JK Rowling specifically asked to star in the films.
In 2007, while working on Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince, Dame Maggie was diagnosed with breast cancer but continued filming. She was given the all-clear after two years of treatment.
From 2010, she was the acid-tongued Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, in the hit TV period drama “ Downton Abbey,” a role that won her legions of fans, three Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe and a host of other awards nominations.
Downton Abbey - Violet Crawley - The period ITV drama ran from 2001 to 2015, followed by two films
One of Smith's most famous later roles was as a homeless woman in The Lady In The Van, as Miss Shepherd, a redoubtable woman who lived for years in her vehicle on Bennett’s London driveway.
Smith first played Miss Shepherd on stage in 1999 and earned an Olivier nomination for Best Actress
Smith added a supporting actress Oscar for “California Suite” in 1978, Golden Globes for “California Suite” and “A Room with a View,” and BAFTAs for lead actress in “A Private Function” in 1984, “A Room with a View” in 1986, and “The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne” in 1988.
She also received Academy Award nominations as a supporting actress in “Othello,” “Travels with My Aunt,” “Room with a View” and “Gosford Park,” and a BAFTA award for supporting actress in “Tea with Mussolini.” On stage, she won a Tony in 1990 for “Lettice and Lovage.”
She was one of a select group of actors to win the treble of big US awards, with two Oscars, four Emmys and a Tony - as well as seven Baftas and an honorary Olivier Award in the UK 🇬🇧
Maggie Smith was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire 🏅 the equivalent of a knight, in 1990.
She will never be forgotten & her characters will continue on, for future generations to love 💫 🎭
RIP Maggie Smith 1934-2024 🥀 🖤
