“No, no, no, no, no! This is all wrong. Who approved this?” On the floor today, was a very upset head elf. The jingles in every step were starting to get on everyone’s nerves because he would not stop pacing.

“Talk to the head elf of the design department, boss.”

With three weeks left till the big day, Santa’s workshop was over run. There were so many things that needed to go right in order for the night to go smoothly. And it just seemed that everything was going horribly. Bears were not as fuzzy, dolls were missing shoes, and to top it off, the signature music box for this year was decorated in shades of green rather than purple.

“Well, I am off to go speak with that elf.” Bernard was feeling the stress of every elf in the building, and then some. Mumbling and muttering to himself, the elf was starting to feel the weight of the entire North Pole on his shoulders. He would not be getting adequate rest until after Santa takes off in his sleigh on the 25th. The head elf stomped his way to the office of the lead design elf. It was not until he barged in that he remembered just who had recently taken up the position last Christmas.

“Oh, hi Bernard.” She looked up from her paperwork to see the dark haired elf stop dead in his tracks. His lips were pulled taught in an awkward smile, and his hands fiddled with themselves.

“Hi.” Bernard squeaked, cursing himself for letting his emotions get the better of him. But there was just something about her. Maybe it was the fact that her ears blushed with that perfect rosy shade. Or that the sparkles on her cheeks seemed to be a beacon of light no matter how dim her environment. It could be that her hair cascaded down her back in a beautiful waterfall that was kept out of her face with the most adorable ribbon that Bernard had ever seen. He was vaguely aware of the fact that she was talking to him, or at least trying to.

“Something I can do for you?” She turned fully away from her paperwork to give him her full attention. The male elf tried to speak several times, but just ended up looking like a fish out of water with his mouth gaping open then closed. He went to leave the room, but stopped his hand on the knob and turned around again. Taking a deep breath, Bernard found his voice.

“The music boxes.” That was all he could get out, before his air got trapped in his lungs as he saw the sparkles on her cheeks.

��What about them?” It was clear that she was not as affected as he was being the vicinity of the other. Or maybe she was just better at functioning, while his IQ was automatically slashed in half.

“They’re green instead of purple. Who approved that?” Bernard tried to sound stern but it only came out breathy the longer he was there.

“Oh, Santa did. I thought we might get more of them out the workshop if we did green rather than purple. And we did. We’ve gotten so many asks for them by the children.” Her hands were clasped in front of her as she leaned on the desk.

“Why wasn’t I told?” Again, he tried to sound and look stern with his hands on his hips.

“We sent the notification to you. It may have gotten lost in all that paperwork that you also have. I mean, I have a lot being head of a department. Can’t imagine what it’s like being the head elf of everyone.” She teased, laughing lightly at the thought. Bernard thought that his legs were going to give out when he heard that sound but he remained strong.

“What about the teddy bears? They’re not super fuzzy right now.” He countered, hoping to find something to make his trip in here justified. Bernard would never admit that just seeing her was worth the effort.

“We’re waiting on that new extra soft, hypoallergenic fur that is being made. Once they do, which it should be done today, those bears will be nice and fuzzy.” Propping her chin on her hand, Bernard was trying not to kid himself in believing she was looking at him the same way he looked at her. But as he opened his mouth to counter her, she beat him to it. “Yes, they will be done in time for Christmas.”

“What about the dolls not having shoes?” Once more, he tried to be the head elf, but he was weak to whatever magic she had casted upon him.

“Now that I will definitely have to come down on to the floor to check out. That’s an odd thing to be missing.” Feeling satisfied that the trip was not wasted in a professional sense, Bernard spared one more look at the elf in front of him. With an awkward wave, and shy smile, he turned to leave.

“Bernard!” She called, making the elf turn around faster than he would ever care to admit.

“You know, I could use a mid day cocoa. Maybe a certain someone would like to accompany me on my walk around the workshop? Just to make sure everything is going smoothly while I check in with the elves.” Tidying up her desk a little bit, she slipped from her chair and made her way to the door where Bernard waited.

“Well, um…” he started , looking down at her, ”would you like to join me for a cocoa and a walk?” Bernard asked shyly, holding his arm out. His body relaxed when she happily wrapped her arm around his.

“I’d love to.” And with that, the two elves with tons of responsibilities walked arm in arm with a cocoa each in hand. No decided to call attention to it; they were just happy Bernard finally got the courage to ask her.

As it finally charged, she made a small sigh and smiled as she looked at you, softly saying, “You’re always too thoughtful Y/N, there’ll be one day where life will give it all back to you.”

You nuzzled into her chest, “As long as I can make others happy, that’s all I need to make myself happy,” you said drowsily as you rested on her chest. She kissed your forehead as you dozed off, cradling you to sleep.

The next day, Jenna got up so early and unattached herself from your grasp, making you make a small noise as you subconsciously looked for her embrace.

The bed creaked as you made a small murmur, looking up at Jenna barely awake.

You yawned, really sleepy, “Where are you going??” You said sadly, a little tired pout forming.

Soon enough from her scent on the stuffy, you were asleep, snuggling it.

Her footsteps crunched against the leaves as she listened to her music, getting a new idea as a proud smile sneaked on her lips.

She entered the electronic store, buying you the latest white phone that she had as well. She also went to the head gear section and bought you Sony headphones, a white one that would look so pretty on you. Her fingers signed the signature as she payed with her card, buying you guys two matching phone cases with two black cats on them.

Two hours later she came home, opening your bedroom door as she walked in.

“Y/N, sunshine, I’m here,” she whispered as you made a small murmur again, opening your eyes.

A small grin appears on her face as she shows you the new phone and headphones as you stare.

You were so tired you stared at it in disbelief and confusion.

Hi! This advent I really want to honour my faith rather than just celebrating christmas in a secular sense. I found your post about advent and the liturgical new year inspiring, and I was wondering if you could point me towards some ideas or resources for advent practices or ways to go about worship specifically for this period - everywhere I've looked just talks about lighting candles, which I'm not able to do in my current housing. Do you have any suggestions?

Happy Advent, beloved! Candles are great (including fake ones or felt/crafted ones)—or you could recreate a similar weekly/daily thing, like hanging another star in the window. But that's not your only option. Here are some thoughts! (I also said some similar things last year you might find interesting.)

One of the most meaningful things about my Advents growing up was the fact that it was visibly not-quite-Christmas. We put up our tree maybe a few days before but we didn't decorate it until Christmas Eve. We didn't listen to Christmas music till Christmas—we listened to Advent music. We put our nativity set in the window, but gradually—we would set up Mary and Joseph traveling to it, and I remember waiting to unpack the baby Jesus until Christmas Eve. (The wise men were on the bookshelf until Epiphany.) I've put a painting of the Annunciation on my altar, but Christmas stuff will wait. 

It's very important to me to make each season distinct materially. The things around me, the music I listen to, the books I read, the prayers I say, change tangibly—in Advent and Lent especially. My emotions come and go, what I'm thinking about is different every day, but it's Advent because I am doing Advent—and not yet doing Christmas, no matter what the music in the grocery store or the parties I'm invited to tell me. (I don't refuse to find joy in them, I'm just conscious about the fact that I'm in a different season. It's not as big a deal to me as the Lent/Easter divide, though, which I will defend with every part of me.)

I love liturgical colors for this reason, too—my church isn't very extravagant and mostly looks the same throughout the year, but the altar cloth is a different color. I know exactly what season it is just from that. (Our Advent is blue to honor Mary, but most people's is purple like Lent with maybe a pink Gaudete Sunday.) My home altar also changes color, so I have that visual in my room as well.

So do it on purpose, candles or no. Maybe wait on a few Christmas-y things, like ornaments or music (don't worry, Christmas has twelve days and then you can keep doing it all through the Epiphany season if you want). Make it Advent, whenever you start! 

Historically, Advent traditions have been very similar (or identical) to Lenten ones. The Orthodox church calls Advent the Nativity Fast. It's been a penitent preparation. Things we may associate with Lent, like going without things or structured prayer, can find a home in Advent as well.

Secular celebrations and consumerism have affected Advent as well as Christmas, with countless calendars and just in general by filling our lives with Christmas themes that might make us forget Advent has its own themes. (To be clear, I support anyone celebrating Christmas—once a religion evangelizes/colonizes/rules, it has no right to accuse people of appropriating its holidays. I am simply talking about how the cultural practice differs.) Advent has themes of peace and love and hope, but it's got more specific themes than that, scarier stuff than that. It's about Christ's coming in the Incarnation, but it's also about Christ coming all around us every day, and Christ's promised future coming.

Spend some time with Isaiah, spend some time with meditations on Mary (I just read some of Catherine of Siena's words which are here as a reading for March 25.). From the poem I posted, you can tell I spent some time with Joel last year. Here's the Revised Common Lectionary daily readings for these seasons—you could start a habit or do it for a season or explore some passages every once in a while. You can find the Book of Common Prayer's traditional Advent prayers here (The Collects >> choose Traditional or Contemporary language >> Seasons of the Year). The ancient "O Antiphons" accompany the Magnificat starting Dec. 17 (here's a booklet with commentary & Latin chant). Forward Movement has several podcasts, if you want to pray daily while commuting or taking a walk or right before bed.

There are a million Advent devotionals out there—you can find one from an author you like, or search your/a denomination + "advent devotional" or "advent prayers" and you'll probably find something. For some social justice oriented ones, I've found Red Letter Christianity's Reflections from Bethlehem (by Palestinian authors), Justice Unbound's Boundless: An Anti-Colonial Advent Devotional, and the UCC's Abolition Advent Calendar. Cole Arthur Riley (Black Liturgies) is doing an Advent series on her Patreon. Jan Richardson posts art and poetic blessings throughout the year.

I'll tell you a secret—most devotionals are meant to be read every day, but no one will know if you don't do that. You can start them at any time and read as much as you like whenever you like. Don't not start one because you don't think you'll be regular about it. 

And of course, you don't need a book to say "Advent" on the front for it to be an Advent book—or music or anything else. I'm about to start God Hunger: Discovering the Mystic in All of Us (John J. Kirvan) which I picked up at a book sale but it's on the Internet Archive! I'm drawn to poetry and Marian hymns in this season, and things that talk about the end of the world and prophecy. Whatever Advent is to you, surround yourself with it—and anything you're just starting to think about, you can explore.

The beautiful news is? The years spiral on, and Advent returns. Every year we're confronted with it, and every year I never do exactly what I wanted. But I've found some stuff to bring with me, some books to reread, things I know further my practice and things that don't. And when the spiral returns to this distinctive place of waiting for something already in our hearts, of hoping for something we don't understand, of inviting in someone who has already snuck in like a thief in the night, we can try again.

So happy Advent, and may yours be visibly, tangibly, purposefully Advent. May you be the impractical kind of hopeful and the holy kind of scared. Christmas is a miracle slowly being tended (rather than Easter's miracle erupting from the ground)—not that there's no blood, no surprise, but that for nine months Life itself grew quietly. So keep watch. Make your life a womb, make your Advent a narrowing toward the humanity God enters. Tend the darkness and bring in some light—a candle is just a way to do that, but there's so much light in the world. Here's to finding it.

The second Bob stepped into his government housing, he was immediately taken aback. Not only had his wife apparently put up all the Christmas decorations without him; she was also baking like there was no tomorrow.

Sneaking his way into the kitchen, he was certain that she did not hear him walking through the front door. She had Christmas music playing through a speaker on the counter as she rolled and cut some sugar cookies. However, there were plenty of other sugar cookies, and different types of cookies even, already on their cooling racks. Even some pies were sitting out on the counter. How she found the time for all of this today, Bob would not understand.

Coming up on his wife, Floyd reached out and grabbed her by the waist, pulling her close. Letting out a startled scream, she was quick to attempt to throw an elbow back behind her, only to stop when she heard her husband laughing. With a gasp, she turned in his hold and pulled him close.

“Oh, Bobby! You’re home. When did you get home? I thought you weren’t suppose to be home till Friday.” Her face was pressed into his neck where she could take a deep breath of his aftershave and cologne.

“We got released early. I wanted to surprise you, and it looks like you surprised me.” Looking around, Robert took in the sheer amount of sweets on their counters.

“Um, about this… I was gonna donate some to the shelter,” sheepishly she muttered.

“I don’t mind, sweetheart. I’m just a little surprised at the volume. How long have you been baking?” Shifting his gaze to his wife, he smiled when he saw the embarrassed flush overtaking her face.

“Since nine this morning…”

Chuckling, Bob pulled his wife closer still and pressed a kiss to her head. “Well, let’s pick what we wanna keep, and what we’re donating.”

As the night drew near, the Floyds had found themselves snuggled up on the couch. An apple pie had been split between them after a simple dinner, leaving the couple stuffed in the living room. “It’s A Wonderful Life” played on the screen in front of them. But both people were just happy to be sitting next to one another.

For the first time since Bob had been deployed, they both slept peacefully in their bed. Thankfully, the entire Dagger team had been granted leave for the next few days which was a welcomed reprieve. Waking up with his wife in his arms, Robert smiled at her peaceful expression. Her face smoothed out in sleep and reminded him of when they were young and newly in love. It reminded him of their wedding night when they got to sleep next to one another as husband and wife for the first time. It filled him with glee to see her sleeping next to him.

But the training that the military had instilled in him was not lost on days of leave. Bright and early, at five o’clock in the morning, he was in the kitchen brewing a pot of coffee. Opening the fridge, he grabbed his cream, the oat milk and cold brew for his wife and set out to make something for breakfast. Scrubbing the sleep from his face after moving his glasses briefly, there was a ping on his phone called his attention. The Dagger group chat that they had was going off, it seemed. And for good reason.

Groaning, Robert face palmed as he read the texts coming in. He ended up being so involved in the texting that he failed to realize that there was another human in the room. That was until, he felt her wrap her arms around his body, and rested her head on his shoulder.

“Morning, Bobby,” she murmured into his back, voice still thick with sleep.

“G’morning.” Bob pressed a kiss to her hand as he brought it up from his chest.

“Whatcha got there?” Disengaging her hold, Mrs. Floyd began to make herself and her husband their coffees. Robert just exhaled through his nose as he read another message that dinged on his phone.

“The Daggers. We um… I totally forgot about this otherwise I would have mentioned it in our phone call last time and I understand if you don’t want t-”

“Robert,” she cut him off, placing a hand on his chest to feel his racing heart. “What is it? Just tell me.”

Scratching the back of his head, Bob rocked slightly on the balls of his feet. “The gang wanted to get together and do a Christmas potluck tomorrow since we were granted leave.”

“Okay. What’s the big deal that you’re making it?” She teased her husband, handing him his coffee.

“Well, if you come, it’ll be the first time that you have ever met them. Plus, I know it’s a bit last minute for making something to bring.” Taking a sip from his mug, Bob felt a fierce blush come over his face as he spoke. With her own cup in hand, she came to rest upon his chest, looking straight up at Robert.

“I’m fine meeting your workmates, Bobby. I haven’t even met Phoenix yet. I’ll just whip something simple up for tomorrow. If you want me to come?”

Smiling down at the gorgeous woman in his arms, he pulled her in closer and dropped a kiss to her forehead. “Of course I want you to come. If you’re good with it, we can do it.”

Sharing another kiss between them, the couple happily went about making their breakfast together. With Bob being on leave, he did not have to do much of anything that he did not want to do. He simply enjoyed letting his wife make some plans, like going to deliver all those treats to the homeless shelter downtown. It was a small thing for them, but they enjoyed seeing how the inhabitants lit up at the prospect of a cookie.

From that point on, it was a bit of a lazy day. Lounging around the house, watching movies, and running through ideas of what to make. She bounced around making different cakes, cookies, and other bite-sized treats. It would have to be something that most everyone should like, but without knowing who these people were, she had no clue what to make. And, it would need to be something that she could make relatively fast.

Eventually, she landed on spiced iced orange cookies. At the very least, she knew that Bob would eat them if no one else did. She use could not keep his hands off of them when she made them around Christmas. Which also meant that she had to double the recipe so that he could have his own batch to keep at home.

The following morning, she was up, just as bright and early as her husband, to begin working on the cookies. She had to send him out for more oranges at one point, but she would never tell him that was just to ensure that he did not eat the cookie dough while she ran to the bathroom. For the better part of the day, she had stayed cooped up in the kitchen, slaving over these cookies that she hoped everyone would like.

“Hey, honey,” came Bob’s voice from the threshold of the kitchen. “Do you wanna start getting ready? We gotta leave in about three hours.”

Looking around, she let out a sigh as she noticed that it was one o’clock in the afternoon now. Nodding, her hands wiped themselves on her apron before checking the cookies on the rack once more. She pressed a kiss to Bob’s cheek as she took her apron off, before leveling him with a look. “I know how many cookies there are in the to go container; thirty-six. You have your own to eat if you wanna have some before hand.”

Following her pointed finger to the cooling rack of additional cookies, Robert nodded happily. With a final glance towards her husband, she made her way to the bedroom and began to get ready. Her hair was curled, her makeup looked spectacular, and her dress was free from wrinkles. Touching up her red lipstick, she slipped on her heels before heading back out into the main part of the house where she found her husband snacking away on his own stash of cookies.

“Happy,” she asked, leaning against the threshold. Bob, with his cheeks stuffed like a little chipmunk, nodded eagerly.

“Okay, well,” she went to finish up her business in the kitchen, “we need to be going soon, right? Let me get these finished up so we can leave.”

After a few moments, the Floyds were ready to go. Bob wore his new button down shirt that he had been waiting to wear. All the way down to Rooster’s townhouse, he was nervously drumming his fingers against the steering wheel. Reaching her hand across to lay on his leg, she tried to calm her husband as much as she could.

But the nerves seemed to kick up when they parked in the lot nearby. Bob led her to the home that he had known once or twice before on shaking legs. However, when he went to knock on the door, he was stopped.

“We’ll be okay, Bobby.” Her words washed over him in a reassuring wave. Nodding, he cleared his throat, and stopped his bouncing long enough to knock steadily.

The door in front of the couple opened to a beautifully done up Phoenix, who just stood there for a moment. Her eyes wide, and mouth open.

“Uh… Bob?” Phoenix could not manage to say anything more than that. The glass of wine in her hand was starting to slip before the other woman swiped the glass before it could drop.

“Nix, um… this is my wife. Baby, this is my front-seater, Phoenix.”

Still numb with shock, Phoenix held out her hand, smiling when she received a shake from the new person.

“Well, I know I am glad to finally meet the elusive Mrs. Floyd. Come on, meet the gang. Are those cookies?” And with that, his wife was taken inside, leaving Bob to trail after them. But before they could get to where everyone was gathered in the living room, Phoenix gave her back.

“You may wanna do the honors.” Now with his wife back in his reach, Robert hesitantly walked into the room where his teammates awaited. Hearing Phoenix walk back, the team looked up to find exactly what had stunned her at the door.

“Everyone,” he started, “this is my wife.”

Silence. That was all anyone could do. Complete and utter silence. She started shifting on her feet as she felt everyone’s stares. But she had no idea on whether or not this was a good thing.

“Well I’ll be damned,” some tall blonde man finally spoke after a while. His beer was set on the coffee table in front of him, walking over to the couple in favor of drinking.

“I’m Jake, or Hangman. Pleasure to meet you Mrs. Floyd.” The man in question held out his hand for her to shake, leaving her pleasantly surprised and the rest of the people shocked. Noticing this, he looked around, specifically lingering on the husband.

“What?”

“Nothing, just…” Bob tried to find the way to say what he wanted to say nicely. “You’re being not how I thought you would.”

Giggling, she allowed her husband to take her around the room to introduce her to everyone. With each new person she met, she found herself, and Robert, growing more and more comfortable with the whole ordeal. Rooster had shown them where to set their box of cookies on the kitchen counter, before declaring that dinner was ready. So many dishes from everyone were put out buffet style, which allowed them to take whatever it was that they liked.

Back in the living room, there was a full interrogation happening of Robert. His front-seater, his best friend in the entire world felt a little betrayed, but understood why he kept his wife under wraps. However, Hangman and Fanboy were less eager to give it up. They kept slinging questions left and right at the couple; everything ranging from how they met to when they got married, and everything in between.

The only reprieve they got was Bradley suddenly walking back into the room, mouth chewing and a determined look in his eyes.

“Who made these?” He demanded, bringing the room to a screeching halt.

“Whatcha talking about man?” Payback retired behind a swig of his beer.

“These iced, orange spicy-ish cookies. Who brought these,” Bradley asked yet again.

With a nervous glance, Mrs. Floyd raised her hand towards the air. “I did. Is there something wrong with them?”

“You did this?” Rooster was now starting to freak her out with that crazed look in his eyes. And Bob was getting ready to defend his wife. “I’m in love with these. If I could marry them I would. I will pay you to make more.”

A shocked look came across her face, as it did her husband’s. Chuckles forced themselves from their throats as they beheld the man.

“Oh, um,” she began, “I’m glad you like them. Uh, sure. I can make more.”

That sparked a fever into the rest of the group who immediately stood up to try the cookies, leaving the couple sitting on the couch. Obscene sounds were being produced paired with innocent comments.

“These are so good!”

“I can die happy.”

“Is this what love tastes like?”

“What took you so long to introduce her to us, Bob?” Jake asked, stuffing another cookie into his mouth.

“Have you guys met yourselves?” His ridiculous tone was not lost on them. However it was tempered with his wife bringing him another Sprite Zero, and a few of the cookies that were left.

“Careful, we might just have a new favorite Floyd,” came a tease from Phoenix, smirking over the rim of her glass.

“I might be able to give up that title.” Robert smiled, looking at his wife.
