When James is asked to protect Evans through a fake marriage, he and Sirius fight about the decision.

“Do you have to be so bloody noble all the time,” Sirius groans as he paces the door room. 

James had just told him that Evans had asked for his protection – well, not directly.  McGonagall had explained that Evans despite being Head Girl was getting targeted by the purebloods in the school and there was only way to save her – pretend she’s joining the Potter family.  With a fake betrothal agreement, any attack on her would be an attack on the Potters and with James’ parents’ recent death that would be a big deal. 

It would break a sacred pureblood law. 

“It’s not for real, Si.”

“It’ll have to pretend to be for real,” Sirius states.  “You’re going to have to draw up papers and make an announcement if you want this to be taken seriously.”

James sighs, “I know, but –”

“But what?”

“But I feel like I have to do this.  I have to because it’s my fault.”

“How is any of this your fault?”

“Because I pursued her, and Snape took that as an attack of some sort and – and everyone knows that she’s the most vocal muggleborn in school.  No one likes her due to her defense of him for so long, and I – I am one of the few that can protect her.”

“It’s her own fault that she’s in this predicament.  Not you.  She chose him over everyone else and now that he’s chosen the other side, she’s left all alone by her own design.”

James frowns.  “I know, but I –”

“Are ridiculously noble,” Sirius states.  “Do you realize what this is going to do?  If you’re caught lying to protect her…”

“I know, which is why I asked her that if I do this and we go through with it, if she just pretends to be my wife, maybe even be a surrogate for us, and you and I can still be together.  It would be strange, admittedly, but once the war ends, she’ll be free to divorce me, and you and I could get married.”

“And in the meantime, we’ll just … be mates?”

“Just for the world,” James states, looking uncertain.  “It’s not that different than what we were planning to do anyway.”

“Except now you are marrying someone else, and everyone is going to think I’m just your mate,” Sirius states.  “She’s your beard and I have to live with that.”

“It won’t be forever.”

“It could be.  We don’t know that the war will ever end.”

James looks down, “I don’t have to do it, but…”

“You’re a bloody noble arse,” Sirius states, still sour.  “Fine, we can do this, but I am setting ground rules.  I do not want her to actually fall in love with you and steal you away.”

James laughs.  “That would never happen, but … okay.  We can talk it all out later.”

“Works for me.”

“Good.”
