So it’s been several days since I’ve watched 20th Century Girl (Netflix) and I still can’t stop thinking about it, because it was just beautifully crafted in every way.

(Trying not to go too much into spoiler-territory, because if you haven’t seen the movie, you should!!)

At first you prepare yourself for a cute little love story and the narrative seems quite straight-forward with its premise and everything. Like, you can expect that Na Bo-ra will create a connection to the two guys that will go beyond just collecting information for Kim Yeon-du and I personally could also anticipate the little plot twist in the middle of the movie (but just because it’s predictable doesn’t mean that it’s bad, just that the movie follows its narrative and ideas in a way that makes sense), but

But.

When I started I didn’t expect it to be so good. First and foremost, this is such a beautiful movie. They use smart camera work, lighting, perspective, just kinda everything to create the most beautiful scenes that are always tied to that kinda bittersweet nostalgia. Absolutely stunning and very immersive. Like usually I prefer watching series because the episodes aren’t that long (most of the time at least) and I have the attention span of a goldfish, but here I couldn’t look away for a single second.

Also: the characters. I didn’t expect to connect to them in the way I did. Na Bo-ra alone is such a good and likable protagonist and I kinda expected the other characters to fall a bit flat in comparison (because she is just that good as a protagonist), but all of the main characters are fleshed out very nicely. What I personally loved was that it was not just about Na Bo-ra’s relationship with the guys, but also very much about her friendship with Kim Yeon-du. Always love to see it. But still, the love story was also … absolutely beautiful and bittersweet and I was not prepared for it.

But yeah, 11/10, very good movie, but also I might not ever get over it :’)
