this is going to sound so condescending and I don't know if there's a way around it but if you want adult characters you may have to branch out into media that's for adults and I know it can be difficult to get out of your comfort zone and not denying there's still an age bias especially for women but it's really worth it if you're looking for older characters and (presumably) more mature narratives to seek out media that's not designed to be best digested by 13-15 year olds because it's probably going to mostly involve 13-15 yr olds

when you watch lando's old footage back with his different teammates you can see his chemistry is so different with each and every one of him. you can see the observant and maybe nervous first year f1 racer that he was around carlos. the fire-meets-fire vibe that they brought, all the overflowing energy of being early 20somethings.

then you get the daniel era where it's honey and butter. both of them warm and charming and lando still learning from the other. but also lando also coming into his own as a racer and realising that he's not an imposter - he's on the level, if not better at that point, than the person who raced for red bull and has 8 GPs under his belt. even if that same racer seems a shadow of his former self at mclaren.

then you get the 2022 merry go round, and oscar. might as well be night and day when they first meet.

oscar, who keeps to himself, puts his head down and works. oscar, watchful and careful after the silly business with alpine. who probably knows he's coming into a buzzy environment with big personalities and huge expectations too - because who is this kid who had the audacity to basically flip off alpine? and via social media of all things (how very modern for an old-fashioned sport). how is this kid gonna make his mark on such a storied team, where the last win is almost now as old as him? what is he going to do with all that potential, right?

we love the machine, because we love watching the potential of a bright young thing fighting their way out of its jaws. lando was in there too, not so long ago, and the poison from that bite might still seep.

nobody knows what to expect. but lando gets to be the elder in the duo for the first time. lando's also going through a process in 2022-23 where he also seems to be entering a new phase of his life and realising some stuff about himself as a person too and what his priorities are. we'll never truly know what that process is (nor should we), but i think on this side of 2024 you can already see how he's handling himself out of it.

and we saw it maybe, in a bit of a smirk at oscar's first day for the car launch and oscar being late. a bit of wonder at oscar, who when suited up seems physically larger than what he remembers.

but then! oscar puts in the work. good chatter surrounds newbie and his working style, and oscar demonstrates maturity. he shows what a contender he is. that he's got his own approach, and he's ready, and – once the car comes – he starts backing that up with good results.

lando is competitive as hell on his own terms. but seeing a twenty one year old from the Reserve bench come in under er, fraught circumstances, then smashing out result after result from Suzuka onwards - surely that puts some fire under your ass in a big way. and! lando is someone who, i think despite his bad luck and lack of a win yet, is incredibly driven and has it in him to be a proper WDC contender. he has that quality. if his teammate is pushing him he's just going to push himself harder.

which culminates, interestingly, in soundbites we're getting recently. like the peter crouch interview, where lando says he's stopped DJ-ing because he's prioritising racing. not an easy decision to make i'm sure, and maybe one that would've happened without oscar's presence at mclaren anyway– but just one signal of where his headspace is probably at now and into '24. lando is also much more reserved about the soundbites he's giving lately (like "i'm not making any race or win predictions anymore and i'm taking things as they are because predictions haven't come true for me in the past, there's too much expectation on myself" etc etc.).

you might even describe it as... maturity.

and guess who has been described as incredibly composed and mature by the mclaren team?

It's a small thing but I really appreciate how Ghosts (US) handles the teenage prom queen ghost hitting on the finance bro 20something ghost. She hits on him, he immediately shuts it down. There are a lot of arguments about how she was already a ghost before he got there and how they were born in the same year and stuff, and he just keeps shutting down the "but I'm not really a teenager, I'm not really too young for you" with "yup, you are, cut it out"

He's literally the guy who's not wearing pants and tells everyone it's because he had just had sex. He's very sleaze-coded* and even HE doesn't go for it.

I feel like in a lot of media, there's casual normalizing of pedophilia, and this is exactly the opposite.

*(although if you actually watch the show you find that there's a lot more depth to him than that and he had actually just given his pants and underwear to someone who needed them more)

it’s insanely cool that we are scaring the news into rewording how the media discusses gaza and Israel. I just learned about the uss liberty incident from a 17 year old on tiktok, who included sources in their video.

I just think it’s important to remember that there is hope, for humanity as a whole. we are not inherently evil, we are born to love

i have SO MUCH to say.

okay lets start off with their different instagram useage. lance hardly ever posts (averaging like 1 post a month) but nando on the other hand... (like 4 posts a week) so with this difference we get fernando mentioning and talking about and posting and praising lance and its so sweet because hes not doing it for lance to see hes doing it because he MEANS it.

then the fact that theyre so touchy for literally no reason and this isnt even new in 2017 (i believe) fernando was touching all up on lance after he got a podium and now that theyre teammates theres always some kind of contact going on (nando grabbing lances neck, arm, hands, hugging, etc.)

and yk i cant NOT mention the "happy you are not in alpine?" video because HELLO. the way lance walks over and grabs him straight away with a "yes, man" then when nando realizes its lance his whole face lights up. UGH. then when they hugged they were so close, lances lips practically against fernandos skin as he spoke like god get a rooommmmm... AND NANDOS HAND ON LANCES FACE? like he full on cupped lances cheek and the eye contact and smiles?? u dont do all this with a teammate u dont want to fuck.

then when nando won "overtake of the month" and told the woman interviewing him that he didnt vote for himself but for "this guy" (lance) like in what world are you VOTING for your TEAMMATE who in most cases is your biggest competition??

and back to their hugs, any time they hug its never a half assed side hug its always both arms tightly around eachother smiling talking chests pressed together like U DONT HUG JUST ANYONE THAT CLOSELY??

then when lance got p5 and nando got p3 (dont remember what race) and while celebrating with the team nando put a hand on his face again and one on his waist?? and people say they have a "father son dynamic" 😣

i posted abt this a while ago but them walking together is like my favourite thing ever because theyre so close and aware of eachother its like theyre two teenagers with a crush 😭 then ofc that video of nando waiting for lance because he was walking slow like ugh theyre so sweet

then we know lance obvi doesnt enjoy media much and usually has a poker face or is showing the person talking to him that he isnt enjoying the conversation but as soon as he sees fernando or he gets involved he has the biggest toothy grin on his face like i know your cheeks hurt after geeking over this man so much

and we're all aware that nando is practically known for being evil and mean and having big rivalries with his teammates (besides carlo they're my babies) but thats never been a problem with lance theyve genuinely always been just love and had this sweet bond and dynamic since before nando and lance even thought of joining aston and its beautiful

also i adore how they basically refuse to fight eachother or risk their relationship its so sweet and its a very unique thing to see because this is a sport and thats the whole point. from lance saying he wasnt going to fight because it was fernando and nando giving lance his brake information because he knew it would help it really shows just how mature they are and how in the end they value their relationship and their teams performance as a whole so they put that above fighting eachother.

it’s always funny seeing people complaining about mainstream media that has like 20something actors playing teenagers and saying that it breaks the immersion for them or something and then hopping on tumblr and seeing all my friends ramble about how much they love their 37 year old highschooler blorbos

I feel like we’re in this strange era where a lot of people like to shit on queer teen dramas and kids shows like heartstopper, xo kitty and the owl house for being cringe. Personally I love all those shows because I’m a 2000s kid who had to cling to tiny crumbs of representation as a teen and would’ve killed for the representation we’re getting in these shows. it’s kind of bittersweet watching them because I can’t help but wonder how much they would’ve helped me get over the internalised homophobia I struggled with for so many years.

I feel kind of old whenever I say stuff like this but I feel like a lot of the people who complain about these shows might be too young to remember the times when queer rep was ridiculously rare and if present, perpetuated awful stereotypes and was generally offensive. I’m nothing like Kitty, but I found her crush on Yuri so relatable, and I really appreciated that she got to have problems (like yuri being taken) that didn’t relate to internalised biphobia/homophobia. I think it’s so refreshing and healing to see characters discover their identities and have innocent little crushes and messy teen romances without coming out being a main plot point. yes, it can be cringe but queer kids should get to do cringey stuff just like straight kids do.

It still blows my mind that arcane, a show whose main couple is wlw is mainstream now. I honestly never thought I’d see representation like that in such a popular and high budget show. As someone who lives in a country where queer media is heavily censored, I just think some people don’t realise how lucky they are to have grown up in a time period where queer representation is so ubiquitous. Let this 20something bi girl watch her cringey queer kids shows in peace :’)

honestly i think some of the posts abt american teens and 20somethings moving to red note are kind of missing the point bc like the ppl who are going to red note are not like tumblr users raised in progressive communist circles and in fact have never had their preconceptions of china that theyve learned from media and culture questioned outside of maybe watching a chinese romantic drama show or whatever. like seeing posts that are like "we've been telling you guys about the misinformation spread about china the whole time" no you havent bc these ppl have never and will never see yr blogs or even see tumblr posts off of tiktok and instagram, the ppl impacted by this change are the ones who use tiktok to keep up w friends and celebrities and like to be entertained by hauls not faux progressives who sometimes accidentally learn things while bickering back and forth about politics they barely understand on a slowly dying microblogging website thats only real use in any sort of organizing seems to be the ability to spread fundraisers and even that is limited considering this site isnt exactly popular with the rich and powerful.
