Identity
Definitions
The fact of being who or what a person or thing is
A close similarity or affinity
Rem Koolhaas: National Identity In Architecture
As said on ‘Psychology today’, a person’s “identity encompasses the memories, experiences, relationships and values that create one’s sense of self”. As much as this quote is in reference to a person’s identity it can also be related to architecture. For example, the style of buildings and placement in certain countries and cities can be seen as part of that locations identity as sometimes architects use a places’ history as inspiration for new buildings. Identity plays a large role in everyday life, from personal identity to a companies identity to a nations.
Utilities One explains the link between architecture and personal identity: “Physical spaces and places play a significant role in shaping our well-being and personal identity.” This quote really shows the importance of our surroundings and how it affects our identities. A colourful surrounding could make some very colourful and happy but it could also make others almost ‘rebel’ and dislike colour.
Even though identity is usually recognised within people it is also applicable to buildings, objects and places. Everything has different memories and characteristics which identify them.
Quotes:
“Identity encompasses the memories, experiences, relationships and values that create one’s sense of self” – Psychology Today “Physical spaces and places play a significant role in shaping our well-being and personal identity” – Psychology Today “It should be people-specific and should also represent the way of life of such people” – Chukwuali “Architecture As Identity” – Abel

During my research on identity I came to the realisation that even structures have their own identity and that they also help to create the identity of a place. For example, New York wouldn’t be the same without all its skylines which use their height to show off the powerful and wealthy identity of New York.
Chris Abel is a writer and educator who focuses on architectural practices, based in Malta. He has visited and taught in many big universities across the world. He is the author of a book called ‘Architecture and Identity’ which consists of a variety of his key essays that look into cultural and technological changes that are reshaping modern architecture. ‘Architecture and Identity’ is separated into three separate parts: Science and technology, Critical Theory, and Regionalism and Globalization. Within the section on Regionalism and Globalization he has a sub-section called “Architecture as Identity”. Within this chapter Chris looks at how architecture is used to show a places’ identity.
I strongly agree with, “Architecture as Identity” as a quote itself. This is because it shows that our architecture will and has always been used as a way to show a society or communities identity and what they find important and what they believe in, which they have done for centuries through the use of temples, churches and houses, etc.
I believe that as much as our personal identities are important, the identity of our architecture and what it tells others is and has always been equally as important. It shows off power, beliefs, religions and how our society works with each other.
Throughout my research I found that identity is such a broad subject that it is fairly tricky to pin point it to one specific topic. I tried to focus on identity within architecture as best I could to avoid going completely off-topic.

Unit 7: Music in Nature And Nature in Music
“Rythm is the center of humanity, one who knows rhythm knows the world” - King Clave
youtube
I saw this quote a bit ago and it reminded me a lot of this week's prompt. To be completely honest, I don’t think I can remember a time in my life when music and nature didn't go hand in hand. For as long as I can remember, summer walks have been associated with whistling, campfires with country music, and playing in the snow with what some would call repetitive Christmas carols.
Music can be found anywhere in nature. While humans use music to help process feelings, create ambiance, or instill feelings of joy, other species such as birds and whales use music as a form of communication. To further elaborate, whales use their songs to help locate others as well as different food sources (NOAA, 2013). In addition to this, birds utilize their songs to both attract mates and defend territory (Wada, 2010).
Now to flip the question, nature plays a big role in music. In this week's course notes, when reading about the relationship between Indigenous Peoples and the environment. I was reminded of a song titled Northern Lights by Jerry Cans. In his song, Cans highlights the beauty that exists beyond our screens by paying tribute to the northern lights; an environmental process that carries much importance for this community. For Indigenous Peoples, music is a tool used to help translate ecological and ancestral knowledge (The Conversation, 2021). Through this, an appreciation for their land and what it provides is acknowledged which in turn results in a deeper connection with the space. Music has the power to move which is important in many contexts but especially within that of interpretation. As interpreters, it is our job to teach in a way that allows the audience to feel connected with a space and its history. Considering this, using music to translate such environmental knowledge can be useful in evoking emotions and in turn contribute to greater understanding (Beck et al., 2018).
youtube
Now, as I read the last part of the prompt I would be lying if I told you it took me any time to find what song I was gonna talk about. Picture this with me: it’s about 10 pm on a midsummer night. Those closest to me are all sitting by the campfire in my back yard shuffling through music when all of a sudden American Pie by Don Mclean comes on. Within seconds everyone's faces light up and we begin to sing and laugh as the almost 9-minute song continues to play. The stars, the fresh air, the sounds coming from different life forms in the backfield… it's all perfect. While the song of choice could be seen as questionable - it in itself is a portal to both a natural landscape and one of my fondest memories.

Merit in Integrity: The Interconnectivity of Past and Present
For this week's blog post, I initially had trouble interpreting this quote as it seemed quite daunting, however as I reread it, I was able to understand the overall message. The beginning of the quote stated “There is no peculiar merit in ancient things, but there is merit in integrity” which struck a chord, and I found it to be quite profound. In my eyes, this statement is referring to the relationship that we have with the past. Recognizing and appreciating ‘ancient things’ or history is not just based on nostalgia but is necessary to move forward as a collective society. This quote specifically addresses the idea of interconnectivity between the past and present, paying close attention to the inherent value of maintaining one's integrity. One great example that helped me to unpack this is the concept of family recipes. For example, your grandma may have a famous recipe book that has been in the family for generations. The age of these recipes is not what makes them important or special; rather it's the memories, stories, and joy behind each recipe. This cookbook has now become a symbol of intergenerational connectedness as it preserves both the authenticity and integrity of previous generations. When recalling important aspects of our history, many people place importance on how old something is, as if its merit relies solely on this, often like a painting or piece of art. Many aspects of history need to be passed on to the future, not just age but traditions, values, and memories.
This quote got me thinking about the rich history throughout various cultures, and how these stories are passed along. In my other classes, I have recently learned more about Aboriginal People and I feel as though this quote can be directly related to their culture and values. Aboriginal People place a lot of value on history and oral tradition, connecting past and present memory (Augustine, 2009). The idea that there is no peculiar merit in ancient things but there is with integrity aligns directly with the core of the Aboriginal culture. Their various cultural practices and Dreamtime stories, which outline the story of events of how the universe and everyone in it came to be, provide a holistic view of the world, which coincides directly with the quote from Hyams.
This painting by artist Dale Stonechild recalls his experiences of the stories told to him by his grandmother and other elders (Stonechild, 2014).
Unpacking the end portion of this quote, I liked the train analogy and believe it can be interpreted better through the lens of the Aboriginal Peoples. For them, their heritage and traditions are not finite but rather continuous, much like a train moving along its tracks and through stations. If people perceived their past as concluded, as the quote states, it would eliminate the significance of their cultural train, preventing the ongoing journey of knowledge and appreciation of the world. Each station the train stops at represents a memory or moment in time that contributes to the overall journey and integrity of the train or in terms of real life, one’s cultural identity.
This quote outlines the importance of the intrinsic merit of integrity over the age of history, representing the interconnectedness of the past and present. I believe this quote is especially significant in the Aboriginal culture, recognizing the ongoing cultural journey that allows for the preservation of integrity which defines who they are and what they believe.

Today’s Reflection:
Today’s memorial is not about some historical event, although it did happen, but more about how we relate to Jesus. For Jesus said that whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, sister, and mother.[1] This is good news because as members of his family through our baptism and confirmation “[this] translates into a commitment to do the will of the Father.”[2] Therefore, we are blessed with the example of our Blessed Mother, who shows us how we ought to live out our lives. For when Mary gave her fiat – that is her yes – without hesitation, even despite her many sorrows, she continued to do the work of the Father by being the mother of Jesus, and our mother as well. And as such, she is there to assist us with her Son, for she is uniquely connected to him and his mission of redemption.

Four Approaches of Formal Analysis and a painting of Salvador Dali
When criticising an artwork there are four approaches of formal analysis and they are description focuses on what you see by describing the art elements and principles of design that an artwork has, analysis focus on how the art elements and principles of design work together in this artwork, interpretation focuses on what is the meaning or mood of the artwork and judgment focuses on the evaluation of success of the artwork.
I am going to talk more by criticising an artwork using the four approaches I have just mentioned of formal analysis the artwork that I chose is called Swans Reflecting Elephants made by Salvador Dali. This painting was made in 1937 it a Surrealism style created on canvas and painted with oil paint. In this artwork you can see different coloured values that are blend of browns, blues, white and black, shades of darker colour, tint of lighter colour and a bit of highlights in the middle of the artwork. Is also has forms of biometric that is made nature and irregular, form to create a shade of illusion with light in the howl painting. The lines that this painting has are diagonal, curved and line quality of thickness even thinness on the trees, horizontal line is on the back of the trees. On the trees you can also see a bit of shape that has organic effect and the positive and negative space. On the rocks it has a bit of texture and a smooth texture on the animals, pond, trees and the clouds. It also has space of overlapping, sizes are different, lose detail, placement of closer to the horizon line appear farther away and the colour as lose brightness when is farther away. The balances that this painting has are colour, value and texture. This painting is also has the golden ratio and a rhythm of flowing that shows an organic feeling. The artwork has a unity of similarity also variety of different versions of art elements. My analysis about this painting it has a lot of art elements and a bit of design principles but it has a great balance of colours, values and textures so with these effects it made the artwork to have a rhythm, unity, proportion and variety that made the painting more interesting, effective and eye catching. The interpretation of the painting that shows the swans and elephants they have a symbolic meaning like the swans symbolize self-love, loyalty, grace, trust, love, beauty, purity and light. Elephant symbolize wisdom, vitality good luck, memory, power, prosperity, long life and strength. That is why Salvador Dali wants to show that he loves art and his passing the wisdom. My judgment of this painting is that when looking at the painting in a distance the swans and the elephants are hard to notice because it has too much detail on the background so my eyes mostly were focusing on the background not on the swans and elephants that has a symbolic meaning, so at first I thought it was a landscape only with no animals. In my own opinion I think that this painting could have been better if the artist had used lighter colours so the swans and the reflection of the elephant are viewed more with brighter colours so the people’s eyes will focus on the swans and the elephants.

¡Bienvenidos lectores!
Hannah

Whassup Again by Budweiser (2020)
During the 2020 Super Bowl Commercial, Budweiser tried to recreate their old Whassup commercial from 1999. Instead of using humans saying the word "Whassup" in the phone, they replaced them with talking machines such as a Roomba, a voice assistant, washing machine and even a toothbrush. The narrator then says that today is a smart world, and we should not be stupid on how we get around when we drink. In this context, the Super Bowl is a big annual event where many Americans are spectating their favorite Football teams usually drinking and eating at the same time.
The intended audience of the commercial are the watchers and fans of the Super Bowl, and consumers of Budweiser beer itself. The intention of the league is to provide nostalgia to the old-time fans of the game, and the beer. Recent demographics have shown that the show is watched by ages ranging from 18-65+ (Statista, 2023). The message is also to remind us that the world's technology is massively changing. Therefore, we all should utilize these technologies even when we are drinking alcoholic beverages in general.
Consumption of beer, although, commonly negatively viewed by many, have both harmful and beneficial effects for its audience. It can increase health problems such as heart diseases, high blood pressure, and most especially liver disease (CDC, n.d). We are also not allowed to consume alcohol while driving as it effects are cognitive abilities and may harm other people such as passengers, pedestrians, other drivers, and you as well.
The advertisement used a mix of video and audio manipulation as such robots screaming and talking to each other consciously is not possible (yet) in this world. Nonetheless, the main message of the advertisement itself is to remind the Super Bowl watchers and drinkers to consume alcoholic beverages responsibly, by utilizing nostalgia as well.
