とても静かな作品だけど力強い。ヨークシャーの荒涼とした風景は、主人公が抱える孤独や憤りと相まって、観る者に寒々しい感覚を与える。そうした印象も、季節労働者の登場によって、印象が徐々に変化する。冒頭の牛の出産と羊の出産の対比はおもしろい。

タイトルにもなっている「ゴッズ・オウン・カントリー」は、イギリスのヨークシャー地方を指す言葉であり、この地が持つ厳しさと美しさの両面を映画は捉えている。映画を通じて、厳しい冬を越えた後の温かな春の開放感を味わうことができる。美しい作品。

アダルトチルドレン、機能不全家族で育った人にとってはとても嫌な気分になると思う映画。親との関係は特に問題のない私としては、母親の気持ちも少し理解できるというか。無償の愛って、受け取る側からはそうだけど、与える側にとっては振り絞っている可能性もあるわけで。個人的には、親だから子にすべてをあげて当然、みたいな風潮には懐疑的。やはりレスポンスや向こうからもベネフィットが欲しいと思うのは、想像に難しくない。とはいっても、ボーの母親は異常だけど。
