Tagged by @islandbetweenrivers, here are 9 books I'm looking forward to in 2025:
No words how excited I am by this. New book. Favorite series. Finishing a trilogy. Lets Gooooooooooo I've got it preordered I can't WAIT.
Okay I'm going to do the rest as text because this post would get REAL big otherwise. That's by far and away the standout in terms of excitement though.
Tomb of Dragons by Katherine Addison - to reiterate the above. So. Excited.
Metal from Heaven by August Clarke: My current library book, not yet started. Recommended by someone whose taste matches my own, I don't know much about it, curious to learn more.
He Who Drowned the World by Shelly Parker-Chan: Loved the first book, haven't gotten around to the sequel. I'd like to fix that in 2025
The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst: Another rec. "Cozy" is wildly hit or miss for me. Many of my favorite books could be considered cozy, but reading things specifically in the Cozy genre often turns me off. I approach this one with trepidation, but have heard good things.
Learning ACT- Now we get into the terrible truth - I am not always a fun nerd. Sometimes I am just a Job Nerd. I am a therapist in real life, and ACT is a therapy style I'm trying to learn more about.
How Minds Change by David McRaney - More Therapy Books, but this one isn't written FOR therapists, and it seems important in general.
How to Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis - Partly for me, partly for work, mostly a reread, but it's been too long and there's good wisdom in here.
The Maid and the Crocodile by Jordon Ifueko - I really enjoyed the other two books in this author's world - I own this one in hardback, just need to remember to grab the physical book and read it!
Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice - I've heard amazing things about this post-apocolyptic Anishinaabe story, that it's focused on the importance of community building, and I hope that's true, because it's the sort of post-apocolypse story I want most.
Tagging @bright-thorn, @chamerionwrites, @tobermoriansass, @bookhobbit, @cakesandfail, @destinationtoast because I'm curious about your picks, and if anyone else who sees this and wants to share, I'd love to know yours as well!

the further i get in my wok reread the more apparent it is to me that kaladin's depression is so central to who he is that you cant think of him as a protagonist w/o considering it. and yeah the premise of the radiant magic system means that people who are actively trying to heal from various traumas are gravitated towards pursuing oaths that help them do so but it's really good that all of kaladin's childhood flashbacks are like yeah no the depression was clinical. it was always there. all that terrible shit also happened and he is getting better but no matter how many ideals he swears he's still gonna have to deal with it. meg thee stallion said it best 😔 bad bitches have bad days too.
#its been so many years since i started reading these and that was one of the biggest draws of kaladin as a main character#like it was what set stormlight apart ESPECIALLY in the 2010-2 edgy fantasy boom that plagued us for years#im rereading very slowly for me i think ill just take this evening and knock the rest of the book out so i can move on to my best friend wo#stormlight reread 2024

Only Dull People Are Brilliant At Breakfast by Oscar Wilde
I read this collection of quotes a couple of years ago, and ever since I have wanted a physical copy of this book. I decided it was finally time to get one and have a reread. I love Wilde and this collection of quotes feels a lot like a trip into his brain, it got me really motivated to finally pick up The Ballad Of Reading Gaol.
#if you dig into my blog you will also find my first review of this book#this post is mostly here to record that I reread this book this year#2024 book#bookblr#booklr#books#book review#book rec#reading#oscar wilde#mine#the---hermit#i thought i posted this weeks ago but apparently i had forgot oops

Auntie C’s Favorite Fic Reads of 2024
I did not have a fandom this year, per se, and, as such, my reads were all over the place. Here are a few gems I discovered in 2024 that I am delighted to share with you:
1. You Inspired… by Lessandra. A Few Good Men. Jack Ross/Daniel Kaffee.
Did you ever want to see Kevin Bacon’s character and Tom Cruise’s character from A Few Good Men uncover their passionate love for one another? Listen, I see your blank stares, but trust me when I say this series will come for you like a mugger in a dark alley.
2. All My Secrets Away by susiecarter. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Julian Bashir/Elim Garak
2024 was the year Bashir/Garak went canon, but I, my dears, have been in this trench since the last 1900s. susiecarter takes a darker twist on Tain’s deathbed confession, and, from it, sprouts a new dynamic to an old friendship.
3. Bloom by Mia_Ugly. The Terror. Francis Crozier/James Fitzjames.
As soon as the first snow falls, thus begins my annual rewatch the Terror, and my annual trolling of the ao3 tag. This year, I discovered this beautiful story that combines fuck-or-die, magical realism, pining, and the unbearable eroticism of scurvy.
4. We Better Make a Start by thefourthvine. Stranger Things. Steve Harrington/Eddie Munson.
Lads, is it gay to make out with a dude at a gay club? Steve doesn’t think so. Because he still likes boobies. This Steve has such a smooth brain, god bless him. We need more single-brained-celled Harrington, and this fic is doing the lord’s work.
5. it’s hard for thee to kick against the pricks by arbitrarily. Fallout 2024. Lucy MacLean/The Ghoul
The Fallout tv show may have been the closest I came to obsessively fixating on a new fandom in 2024. Alas, I did not get sucked down (ha) completely. Perhaps because the fandom, as a whole, didn’t seem to be on the same monster fucker, enemies-to-fucking vibe I craved. But, damn, did this glorious baby ticked alllllll my boxes.
6. does your conscience bother you? (tell the truth) by GoldStarGrl. Justified. Boyd Crowder/Raylan Givens
I had zero (0) feelings about Walton Goggins until I saw him as the Ghoul in Fallout and then, boy howdy, was the thirst awakened. This led me down a rabbit hole that included Vice Principals, Righteous Gemstones, and, ultimately, Justified aka Put Tim Olyphant in a Big Hat Part II. While the show is… fine, this fic soars. Take the plot of Sweet Home Alabama, put it in a blender with redneck soulmates, and enjoy!
#happy new year#fic recs#my favorite fics of 2024#do not include long term favorites that I reread for the 5th time#I was all over the place this year#you’re welcome?

Books: 2024
70+ books in 2004. With the exception of the graphic novels, manga, and the large format non-fiction, I listened to almost all of these books in audiobook form on Libby.
Some of the single manga/comic covers here stand for the series (ie. I read all of The Apothecary Diaries manga published so far, but I only listed book #1).

Forever living with the fact that I hate that they whitewashed Fiyero again, but I love the Fiyero from the movie
There are literally productions casting POC actors for the role, but Jonathan played the role so well.
It's…yk
EXACTLY! with broadway i do give a little more leeway when it comes to casting (obviously roles that are written to be played by characters of color should only be played by people of color but other than that i do think musical casting should be based above all else on talent). the musical Wicked is very very different from Gregory Mcguire's book series and they took fiyero's character a different route to tell a different story. That doesn't excuse the musical's white-washing, but I understand why they did it.
NOW, in regards to the movie, I am very disappointed that they didn't cast an indigenous actor to play fiyero, and i don't really think jonathan bailey gave a "good enough" performance to excuse that. for one, i think he looked too old to play the role (that's not me being mean, that's just my opinion on the casting in general. i think a lot of the actors they hired were too old to be playing college aged students). he did a great job, but them casting a younger, indeginous actor would have added more to the themes they pulled from the books. you have to be so intentional with casting when it comes to movies because it's a form of communication. film and television allows the audience to infer things about a character based off of how they present themself and what they look like physically in ways that stage productions can't. casting is an artform in a way: you have to find the guy that can play the character AND believably emulate them.
i appreciated the movie leaning into the books more than the musical was able to, but i wish they continued that theme with fiyero and even the other students. one of the biggest points of tension from what i remember was between the animal students and the human students as the animals started to have their rights taken away but that's a whole other conversation.
#im gonna reread the books again because i've seen a lot of bad faith takes about them but i havent read them in soooo long#and i dont want to say something inaccurate or pull from my 12 year old memory to dispute a take i disagree with#anon#💌#fran talks#wicked#wicked 2024#i have a lot of thoughts on casting#like. i dont think anyone can blind-cast a movie#regardless of what you want or intend people infer things from peoples race gender and body-type due to stereotyping#so all forms of casting really are intentionally thought through. even one's that are quote unquote blind

i think very often about that telegraph article from 2011 asking various writers if they prefer wuthering heights or jane eyre, and blake morrison said:
Asking which you prefer out of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre is similar to the questions, “Are you John Lennon or Paul McCartney?” and “Are you cat or dog?” The more exciting people are John Lennon, cat and Wuthering Heights. But I am Paul McCartney, dog and Jane Eyre.
#text post#charlotte bronte#emily bronte#wuthering heights#jane eyre#i think about it bc i am also mccartney dog and jane eyre#also sorry if you click on that article it is behind a paywall. it wasn't at least a few years ago when i read it#but everything gets worse#anyway lennon/cat/wuthering heights ppl have a way of scoffing at mocking us mccartney/dog/jane eyre ppl and we have had it. had it i say!#fwiw i love both lead beatles and all three bronte sisters and well... cats dont come close to being as precious as dogs to me#but i like them somewhat#jane eyre is just my favorite thing. god. i should reread it in 2024#i almost said in 2023. bruh. i still think i'm in 2022 tbh#some days i think it's still the 2010s#anyway morrison was onto smth when it comes to matching vibes of this-or-that questions
