In hindsight, it probably would've been better if Sokka had realised he was in love with Zuko at literally any time before this. Or preferably, never fallen for his best friend in the first place.

Sokka regularly has great ideas, and he knows that intentionally falling behind on Fire Prince Zuko's ship to "throw him off Aang's trail" is not one of them.

He goes with it anyway, and finds himself to not be the trickster he thought he was. Instead, he’s immersed deeper into the daily routines aboard the vessel. While the pursuit of Aang and Katara continues, Sokka struggles to maintain his grip on his metaphorical shield and sword against the Fire Nation soldiers around him, as each day finds him more included.

Worst, is the Fire Prince himself, who easily bested him in his village, and who makes it clear immediately that he will hunt down the Avatar whether Sokka is aboard or not.

But the longer Zuko hosts him, the more Sokka stumbles, and stumbles against *him*, and the more he finds his closest convictions challenged.

“Nephew,” Iroh says gently.

“Go on,” he says. His face is twisted up with some emotion none of them can name. He looks almost eager for it.

“Afraid not,” the man says, “Zuko is my nephew and unfortunately, he’s not here right now.”

“Shit.” Sokka squirms a little. “Any idea when he may be back? I need his badge so I can—“ Go beat up Aang for being annoying and perfect at everything and making champion at thirteen goddamn years old while Sokka’s doing this whole thing late— “Better myself and reach true enlightenment. Uh. Sir.”

The man says nothing about Sokka’s age, just hmmms in consideration and rustles his bag.

“Call me Iroh,” the man says. “My nephew is like a spring wind, vivacious and—“

Flighty.]

The Pokémon AU that nobody asked for.

Keep Moving Forward to Stay Alive by Haicrescendo | Rated T | 3k

[“Watch the tail, child.”

Zuko watches the tail and cradles the baby Charmander carefully and close. It sleeps soundly like most infant pokémon and doesn’t stir even when he has to shift its position.

He knows at that very instant that he would rather die than see it harmed, and the potent spike of feeling burns his throat and the space behind his eyes.

Azula holds her Bagon with reluctance, uncomfortably, like she’d rather drop it to the floor.

Zuko never wants to put Charmander down.]

Or,

Zuko’s life has never been easy and somehow, it always manages to get harder.

The Deepest Water Haicrescendo | Rated G | 4k

[“You’re great,” Sokka says to Iroh, “But I’m going to murder your nephew. He’s dead to me.”

Despite Sokka’s forewarning that he would be coming and Zuko’s eventual confirmation via text that he would be there, Vulca’s gym leader is very decidedly not where he is supposed to be.

“You’re welcome to try,” Iroh replies, trying way too hard to sound serious and radiating amusement instead. “If you’d like, you’re welcome to battle me in Zuko’s stead.” He has that authority, Sokka knows, because Zuko’s told him so even though Vulca’s gym regent isn’t well advertised. Nevertheless, he shakes his head.

“No. It doesn’t count as a rematch if it’s you. Besides, I need to go find him and pound some manners into his damn head.”

“Again, you are very welcome to try.”]

Or,

Sokka gets blown off, helps rescue a pokémon, and maybe rescues Zuko a little bit too.

Have The Courage To Be Bold by Haicrescendo | Rated G | 5k

[Zuko wants to cry. He drops his face to the floor and sniffles into the wood and a few tears slip out of him anyway.

“Yes, you’re very fierce, little one,” Piandao tells Druk, very gently, with his hands up. “I will not hurt him.”

Zuko stifles a quiet little sob into the floor.

“Come, now. Off the floor, boy. Up, up.” Large hands grip Zuko by his upper arms and peel him up off of the floor, lifting him bodily and setting him back into his generic blue bed with its generic blue comforter. “Who did that to your face?”]

Or,

Zuko finds rescue from an unexpected source, is definitely not accidentally kidnapped on purpose, and beats up his fellow kids.

[“Let me remind you that I haven’t seen you in person in like, a month, Researcher Pakku gave me the week to hang out with you, and instead of giving your favorite sister your undivided attention, you’re texting some weirdo who sends you...memes?”

“They’re really good memes, though!” Sokka protests, and shows her. Katara is not impressed.

“...Sokka, it’s a picture of a dude and a Butterfree going ‘is this a Pidgey?’. I think you need better taste in memes. And maybe friends.”]

[Piandao rarely feels anger with this kind of intensity and the cold waves rocking through him are startling to the point that all he can do is mumble his address, throat tight, and hang up. He’s numb with fury as he heads straight to the house and barely manages to not slam the door open.

It startles Zuko anyway, perched on the sofa with Druk and Foxglove bundled up on either side of him.

“Are you...okay?” He asks after a moment of silence, because all Piandao finds that all he can do is stare at him. “Master Piandao?”

“I cannot believe you,” he finally manages to force out, “Two years. Two years here with me, and you let Iroh think you were dead.”]

[“Dude, it’s like seven am.”

“Uh huh.”

Zuko looks like he doesn’t quite understand why Sokka has a problem with this. He’s way too awake, and Sokka is not awake enough.

Sokka scrubs at his eyes.

“You know it doesn’t open til eleven?”

“Yeah, to the public. Sorry for thinking you’d want to skip out on the line that’s gonna snake through the whole city. Have fun with that—“ Zuko scowls and turns around to leave, and unthinkingly, Sokka nabs the back of his hoodie and tugs.

“No, please do not do that.”]

In which everyone’s a little nerdier than anticipated, Sokka is a public embarrassment, and Zuko gets honest.

You Found Me (made me into something new) by Haicrescendo | Rated G | 3k

[It’s born in a cage, in a lab that’s all stark white and generic blandness.

It’s alone, no mother or siblings present, just a face swimming in front of its shaky, infant vision. The face is considering and then ecstatic, and it feels a jerk of happiness, the first feeling it ever has.

It’s hungry but also tired, and wants to know about the world.]

[Zuko leans back hard against the bed frame and sighs heavily and tips his head back to look at Sokka.

“Have you ever jumped off a cliff with a bungee before? Or, like, a waterfall?”

“What? No,” Sokka snorts. “Why, have you?”

Zuko’s quiet and considering, and he doesn’t look away.

“It’s scary,” he says, “But when you’re falling, you never want to stop. The fall feels like it takes forever, and you could do it and be happy for the rest of your life. And then you hit water, or the end of your tether. And it hurts, it always hurts, but the fall feels so good that you keep doing it, over and over again.”

“Are you falling right now?” Sokka asks.

“No,” Zuko murmurs. “Fall’s over. I hit the water.”]

Zuko implodes and Sokka wants pancakes.

[Zuko has a traveling companion.

A people one and not a pokémon one, he tells Uncle one night when they’re on video chat.

His name is Jet, he’s a year older, and Zuko found him. Well, kind of. It was kind of like they found each other, because Jet was taking a nap in a bush, and Zuko tripped over him and fell on his head. Jet had yelled and hollered about it, and Zuko had yelled and hollered back until both of them were out of breath, and now they’re apparently traveling together because Jet won't go away.

Zuko knows three important things about Jet.]

[It’s barely seven in the morning when there’s a pounding on the door to Vulca’s gym.

Zuko waits a few minutes to see if Uncle gets it (he doesn’t), and eventually drags himself out of bed. It’s early enough that the junior trainers aren’t here and the gym is deserted. Zuko hopes that they go away.

They don’t, and the knocking continues.

Zuko slides open the door.

“Hi there,” Jet tells him with a grin.

Zuko slides the door shut without a word.]

[“Let it be known, nephew, that I think this idea is terrible.”

“Noted.”

“Let it be known, Sparky, that I’m normally very supportive of your bad ideas and I also think that this one is terrible on an entirely new level for you.”

“Noted,” Zuko says between gritted teeth. “If you didn’t want to help, you didn’t have to.”

Toph rolls grey, unseeing eyes and flips him the bird.

“If you think I wasn’t gonna come help the second you told me about this shitshow, you’re out of your mind. You’ll die without me.”]

[Zuko slams the magazine down on the table. He’s livid, red-faced and gritting his teeth so hard that his jaw’s going to hurt later. He slams it down so hard, in fact, that it rattles Uncle’s tea setting.

“What did the local news do to warrant such a massacre?” Uncle asks mildly, hands instinctively wrapping around a full teacup. “A good ginseng could never.”]

With Torchwood and UNIT gone, Rose tries to find the Doctor however she can--which leads her to MI6. At the same time, strange aliens are attacking spies around the world, which is exactly the sort of thing that would draw the Doctor in.

hey! 2024 smacked me upside the head, and I ended up stumbling into this community & writing, frankly, an obscene amount of fanfiction. it's been wild and thrilling and oddly healing, and I'm grateful for all of it (and all of you). who knew writing filth could be so wholesome?

Shane "Dio" Morrissey/Tim Rockford @perotovar is the most gracious figure alive for letting me play with their dolls. I read the first two parts and something in my brain was electrocuted. These two mean so much to me and as the first mlm fic I've written in literal years, it was such a pleasure to expand on Erin's characters and their dynamic.

Joel Miller/f!reader this is probably the number one thing i loved and hated about 2024. Joel is such a complex character with such nuanced behavior, he's very overwhelming for me to write and really get that "Joel tone". Furthermore, bc I write Pedro's specific Joel, I really try to replicate the accent he uses, which is not as Southern as Game!Joel. In any case, I'm really proud of this AU that hopefully manages to feel the same and all together different. I know I can get in my head about these things, so I really appreciate your patience!

Pero Tovar/f!reader there's just something special about this fic for me. i often have these big lofty ideas for multichapter fics that stretch to 90K+ but who has time for that?? this fic was an encapsulation of what i want to write more of: throwing the reader into the middle of the story, with enough history and an established relationship that the stakes feel important and real - but it's literally just a oneshot. (and of course this fic inspired me to outline a ten chapter fic, but sometimes i can control myself.)

AO3 Wrapped 2024

I didn't publish many fics this year, but here's my 2024 AO3 wrapped! Stats were taken on December 27th. Template is by @/spicedrobot and can be downloaded here.

I sorted by kudos to determine the most popular fic. Sorting by hits resulted in it being A Demon's Justice, but I was already planning to list that as my favorite one. The stats are a bit skewed with that fic anyway, as two of the three chapters were published last year.

I only started writing fanfics in august of this year, and the reception has absolutely blown me away! I never would've thought in a million years that my silly little sonadow fics would get this much attention, and I cannot thank everyone enough for the kindness and support : ) 1.3k kudos is just absolutely insane and I appreciate each and every single one of them so much

I also drew some fun stuff this year! I really need to work on my Sonic style, but I made my first fursona this year and embraced being a furry! I don't draw a ton anymore, but it's always fun to draw smth cool every once in a while

This year, giving in and finally writing silly little gay fanfic and not worrying about being cringe, has been one of the most rewarding experiences ever. My younger self, the little gay kid who grew up on a farm in the countryside surrounded by homophobia, would be so happy to see all the cool people I've met and awesome things I've done : )

AO3 Wrapped 2024

As a notorious fanfiction fanatic, once I learned of the wondrous AO3 Wrapped earlier this year, I just knew I would have to run my stats! It's taken me a few extra days since December 31, but here they are!

I'll be putting the cool basic graphics first! For people who are curious about more detailed tag breakdowns (more relationships, genres, fun niche tropes, etc) of what I read, look under the cut!

Graphic Breakdown:

Slide 1: Pretty sure I audibly gasped and maybe yelled when I saw that word count for the first time! Yep, I sure do read a lot of fic, lmao. Ironically, I didn't actually read Delicious in Wilds in 2024—I was briefly checking something in it. But since the AO3 Wrapped code uses everything that appears in your history, here it is! My actual longest fic read in 2024 was Rage Against the Calamity by BCWill (@bugcatcherwill), which is currently ongoing at 626,657 words.

Slide 2: To quote my friend @louwhose: "wow I am so surprised that Dee, great reader of all things loz, got those fandoms and that character", lmfao. The order is also not surprising given which LoZ game duology has the most fics written for them!

Slide 3: Zelink...zelink...then—WAH! Hehe, sorry to jumpscare you with a Parks & Recreation ship. I had a...phase...after rewatching much of the show this summer. And for anyone curious, the AO3 Wrapped code decides your top authors not by how many words you've read by one author, but by how many fics you've read by one author. As a result, all of my top authors write lots of oneshots: Mistress_Lrigtar (@mistresslrigtar), Fyreflare (@wouldyoustilllovemeifiwasawyrm, and ZeldaElmo (@zeldaelmo) are pillars for zelink, spitecentral (@marinsawakening) wrote a lot of gen oneshots this year, and nocturne-of-forest (@nocturne-of-forest) is the current mvp for midlink oneshots.

Slide 4: This slide—with one very notable exception—was not too surprising to me! Fluff, angst, and hurt/comfort are genres and therefore get tagged for lots of different premises. Now Selectively Mute Link, on the other hand, was not something I expected to appear in my top 4 AO3 tags, and did in fact make me cackle upon reading it. I was somewhat surprised to see that my top rating was GA, as I would have expected T, but I'm certainly content with it, lol.

Detailed Breakdown!

The coding behind this basic graphic is wonderful and concise. However, I wanted to learn much more about my reading habits than just this brief takeaway could show me. Fortunately, as long as you (or a friend of yours, in my case, since I know zilch about coding) know how to run specific commands, almost every detail you want to know about your reading stats is findable.

My top characters definitely reinforce the fact that BotW/TotK were my top games within the LoZ structure! Everyone but Midna appears in one or both of those games. However, Link and Zelda (who appear in many games and AUs) have an almost ridiculous lead on everyone else, and the characters who only appear in BotW/TotK all share very similar numbers (between 101 and 130). As a result, I'd surmise that several hundred of the fics contributing to Link and Zelda's numbers come from other LoZ games or AUs that aren't game-specific, and several hundred are BotW/TotK fics (or BotW/TotK-specific AUs) that focus specifically or solely on zelink.

More big differences here! Zelink is clearly my OTP, and you can tell that I click on a big proportion of everything written for them (1880 zelink fics were posted or updated in 2024), and that they are the most popular ship in the LoZ archive. Midlink is a substantial jump down, but since I also read a very high proportion of all posted midlink fics (113 fics posted in 2024), this is largely due to the paucity of the ship within the archive. Same and worse for Midna/Zelda, which being f/f (on AO3, a notably m/m site, and in the primarily f/m LoZ fandom) has unsurprisingly low numbers.

Fun fact: Link/Tetra is my 14th place ship at 16 fics, which means that if you count all possible incarnations of Zelda, my grand total of romantic zelink and zelink-adjacent works is 883!

Now onto Tags. I knew immediately that I would want to split tags into more categories, since AO3's system of "Additional Tags" containing everything from genres to warnings to author musings means that everything under the sun is lumped indiscriminately. As a result, any fun niche tag (enemies to lovers, for example) gets buried under the mass of Fluff and Angst that almost every AO3 user would have populating their top stats (especially if they read as widely as I do). As a result, I have split my top 50 tags (minus tags like "zelink", "Other Additional Tags to Be Added, and spoiler tags), into three kinds: Genre, Setting, and Fun!

Being an FFN transplant to AO3 at heart, I decided Genre tags were those similar to FFN's genre tagging system. I decided to keep in specific genres, like "Tooth-Rotting Fluff" or "Light Angst", to show the deviations within wider genres, and the kinds of angst or fluff that I'm most likely to read. When all tags are lumped together, the overall lumpable categories are Fluff: 618, Angst: 609, Hurt/Comfort: 359, Romance: 226, Smut: 99, Humor: 91. With that math done, I interestingly am almost balanced when it comes to fluff and angst! Personally I'm quite pleased to see Character Study as #5 on the list when you lump the overalls—I do love a good character study, and they never get as much attention as shipfic, so I'm happy to have contributed!

Setting tags refer to when or where a fic takes place. Of course, most fics, especially oneshots, that fall within a certain game will not include tags about that, and not every fic set Pre-Calamity or Post-Canon will tag such. Not all Alternate Universes will tag the plain Alternate Universe tag, and may skip straight to "Sci-Fi AU" or such. However, I think this is still pretty interesting! Most of what I read revolves around canon, and I'm basically just as likely to read things that are explicitly canon-compliant as are specifically canon-divergent. Yet, unsurprisingly to anyone that knows me, AUs form a strong contingency of settings! Modern AU being so high makes me laugh, but if you combine all 3 AU tags that appear on this list, I have 182 AU works--meaning that around 10% of everything I read this year was some flavor of AU!

Despite most romance works in both fanfiction and published media being about getting together (which is reflected here), my number of Established Relationship fics is also quite high. Which honestly makes sense, because I love a good established relationship where characters have to face an issue together. When it comes to the Big Three of romance tropes—Friends to Lovers, Enemies to Lovers, and Idiots in Love—I think these fell right where they belong. Friends to Lovers is my preference of these, Enemies to Lovers is common among BotW fics, and Idiots in Love is my special little guy.

Four of these tags (a total of 340 tags!) are about how Link communicates, and that's not even including the tag I myself tend to use for a non-talking Link (Nonverbal Link)! I love the diversity in how he communicates and how we as writers convey that fact, lol.

Apparently, I've read more Oral Sex fics (68) than Smut fics (66). I love what that says about how people tag.

I literally have only 4 more fics in my biggest smut-related category (68, Oral Sex) than I do for Grief/Mourning (64). Guess I'm nearly as sad as I am horny??

Zelda needs more hugs than Link, despite appearing less often in fics. I wonder if it's because of BotW, and many Pre-Calamity fics would be more likely to hug Zelda than Link?

There are more POV: Zelda tags than POV: Link tags, even though Link is in 300 more fics than Zelda overall. I have a feeling that's because Link is seen as the default, so people are less likely to tag for his POV specifically.

Nightmares and Trauma having the same value is hilarious to me. Did it just so happen that all fics with Nightmares also tagged for Trauma and they are the exact same fics? Were some fics with Nightmares lacking Trauma, but the math ended up matching regardless?

Trans Link ended up on there!

Worldbuilding ended up on there! Hell yes!

Bonus Info

I forgot to save this data and I've already read too many fics in 2025 to run it again, but my Rating stats for 2024 went General Audiences (711) -> Teen (in the 600s) -> Explicit (~275) -> Mature (~158) -> Not Rated (<50)!

In conclusion...I read a LOT this year! I already knew that, but it's one thing to know it, and one thing to see your data all written out. And now that I have this information, I'll be able to compare 2024 to 2025 when December rolls around once again!

This was a great year for writing for me with a wordcount of over 300k in the end. That's like three whole books and that's insane! Also I really found my way into this so lovely community of freaks and you welcomed me here so sweet. Found my fellow insane people and that's great! But I also made massive improvements in drawing this year. Thinking of how I started digitally drawing in late November of 2023 and thought "Ahhhhhh this will never work", well... I don't like to say it but practicing works. Shocking, I know.

And what are my favorites this year?

Dealings with Daedra: I finished Part 1 and started Part 2 this year - my first fantasy fic, yay! I'm feral for my whole gang of OC's in there and hope you peeps are too! I don't think that 2025 will be the year where I wrap up this entire thing, because Part 2 grows and grows and grows... Will there be a Part 3? Maybe.

A Tale of Hunt: Ancano and Faralda? ANCANO AND FARALDA!!! Started out as a 3am headcanon and now we're here with the dirt that has evolved out of this. Sometimes I pity Ancano for what I'm doing to him and will go on doing in 2025 and then I think "Nah, he deserves his own cum in his mouth. And other men's cum. And sore knees." Stupid little pebble man.

A Taste of Death: My outlet for being a nasty bitch and delving into horror with my favorite necromancer. My knowledge and special interest about disturbing media has a use, woohoo! This one I will wrap up in 2025, I mean, I need to before Nevri and Morotar find a special someone in the course of Dealings with Daedra 2 👀

2024 Writing Wrap Up

I joined HRPF in mid-summer and haven't really looked back. I tentatively put a toe in the water with my first fic in July and then launched an entire universe (accidentally) a few weeks later. I have a lot of plans for more works and universes and making these ding dongs use their words for 2025, so thanks again for liking my words so far. Here's to a calendar turn and symbolic fresh starts.

2024 Fanfic wrapped

2024 wrapped! I know we still have a few days till the new year, but I'm not planning on posting anything else before then. So some stats! I just wanted to say how nice it's been getting into this fandom - I haven't been in fandom since I was about 14/15, and it was HP!

Totals;

I started writing in March, and simply never stopped.

My most popular fic by far in terms of kudos was My King Come Undone, with 1707 kudos and 362 bookmarks. The RadioApple smut fic that started my whole radioapple journey.

The series that started it all, A Friendship in Parts, which had the first chapter posted March 7th, is sitting comfortable in my top five fics by hits!

I haven't written this much in years. The only creative writing I've indulged in prior to March was occasional competitions on forums, or backstory for my DND characters. To have had *this many* people say how they love my writing or even it's changed their life is so, so humbling. As is being told I've helped people discover they were on the ace spectrum, because I discovered that through reading/writing fic as well!

I've met some fantastic people through this fandom, admired lots of writing and art, been admired in turn, and gotten to hone my own skills to the point I started taking commissions. Getting paid to do something I love, which I never thought possible

What does the new year hold? Well, I want to wrap up Stolen Moments and Signals Lost and Found. I'm already signed up for some more projects and gift exchanges, and plan on applying to zines when they pop up. Exploring more pairings, like HuskerDust, StaticSnake, even Chaggie!

So I'm so grateful to have gotten pulled into this fandom, and though I started as very much a fanfic newbie, I've learned of so many tropes and trends that happened in the years I've been away from fic! And I have lots more to learn! Happy new year everyone!

(And though it's not relevant to my stats, I am too excited not to share - I got engaged 3 days ago. So this year has been a good one for sure!)

He offered mercy on more than one occasion, letting you escape chase, going after someone else if he saw them, or even dropping you if he happened to walk by hatch “accidentally” if only in the hope that you might notice him.

He tsked silently as he shook his head. “I reckon ya need a punishment for bein’ a naughty little rascal, but I’m willin’ to offer ya a choice.” The Hillbilly holstered his hammer setting the chainsaw down. His body blocking your only means of escape. You looked up at him silently a tiny look of worry and something else written on your face. “Well, I can hook ya, easy enough basements not too far.” Hillbilly chuckled darkly walking closer, his arms caging you against the creaky dirty cot as he leaned forward. His twisted face inches from your own, “That’d make Her ‘appy an’ all that, but if yer feelin’ like makin’ me ‘appy. Well I could put those pretty thighs ta good use. He’d like to hope you wanted the same things as him to just have something soft to hold in this realm of roughness. Of course, that could just be his TV dreams talking. It didn’t matter much the delusion was enough for him. He watched as the fog curled in finally stripping the map of its features, reclaiming the pieces to use later, and for the first time The Hillbilly left the Trial to his own realm without a single kill, but a smile on his face.
