Per questo le Nazioni Unite hanno deciso di dichiarare il 2025 Anno internazionale della scienza e delle tecnologie quantistiche; l'obiettivo è "sensibilizzare l'opinione pubblica sull'importanza e l'impatto della scienza e delle applicazioni quantistiche su tutti gli aspetti della vita". Riferendosi ai "risultati interessanti e inaspettati" ottenuti nel 2024 sulla correzione degli errori nel calcolo quantistico, Montangero ha osservato che "stiamo vedendo la vetta. Nel 2025 scopriremo se siamo davvero arrivati in cima".

Il computer quantistico realizzato dalla IBM L'ultimo tassello per vincere lo scetticismo di alcuni sulla possibilità di costruire computer quantistici è proprio la correzione degli errori: "dimostrare di essere in grado di fare questo significherebbe che sulla strada verso i computer quantistici resterebbero problemi ingegneristici complessi, ma non più problemi di fondo". In questa nuova corsa l'Italia sta facendo grandi passi, sebbene non abbia ancora recuperato il ritardo accumulato in passato. "Con il Pnrr abbiamo avuto investimenti che hanno potuto metterci sulla buona strada" e che "permettono di portarci avanti con la costruzione di prototipi", ha osservato l'esperto riferendosi al computer quantistico a superconduttori realizzato dal gruppo dell'Università Federico II di Napoli e finanziato nell'ambito dello Spoke 10 di Icsc. Strategie diverse sono seguite nel mondo da colossi come Google. "L'obiettivo non è fare concorrenza alle grandi aziende, ma mettere l'Italia in grado di partecipare alle attività europee relative alla costruzione di computer quantistici" e ai chip quantistici, ha rilevato Montangero. Inaugurato alla Federico II il centro di computazione quantistica superconduttiva. Il progetto, finanziato nell'ambito dello Spoke 10 "Quantum Computing" di ICSC - Centro Nazionale di Ricerca in High Performance Computing, rappresenta un potenziamento e ampliamento dell'originario laboratorio di tecnologie quantistiche dell'Ateneo federiciano. L'inaugurazione si è tenuta nel corso di una ‘due giorni' presso il Dipartimento di Fisica "Ettore Pancini" dell'Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, nel Campus Universitario di Monte Sant'Angelo.
